Abstract:
Mining is one of the oldest activities of humanity, as the extraction of stones, ceramics and metals proved to be essential to develop tools and weapons and to drive forward human civilisation. Possibly the oldest mine – the “Lion Cave” – dates back to 41 000 BC. Located in Swaziland, its pre-historic operators mined haematite to make red-pigment ochre. The mine was likely in operation until 23 000 BC and at least 1200 tons of soft haematite had been removed in this timespan. As time progressed, mining diversified and production methods improved. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans mined different minerals, such as malachite, copper and gold. Philipp II, the father of Alexander the Great, is believed of having conquered gold mines in Thrace, which provided him with 1000 talents (26 tons) of gold per year. Needless to say that Alexander’s conquests would have not been possible without these extensive mining operations. Over the ages, mining activities continued to intensify. Today, a tier-one open-pit copper mine like Chuquicamata in Chuquicamata, Chile, with a depth of 900 m, provides for a production of 443,000 tons of copper and 20,000 tons of molybdenum p.a. Naturally such levels of production come with a price tag. Thousands of workers, numerous heavy machines and investments that go into the millions and billions are required to set up a mine and to maintain its operation. At the same time large amounts of waste – the so-called tailings – are generated, often posing a significant environmental risk. The fact that ore yields have dramatically decreased over time has worsened the situation; today, the extraction of 1 ton of metal ore requires vast amounts of energy and can easily generate hundreds of tons of waste.iv Were it not for a significant technological progress in the extraction, transport and processing of the ores, today’s mining operations could not be sustained. Despite all these technological advances, the mining industry is at a decision point. The conventional trend of the last hundred years of counteracting shrinking ore yields by making the mining machinery faster and bigger is at its limits. Today’s ore haulers weigh as much as 600 tons and require a net engine power of 2722 kW v to sustain operation. At the same time waste heaps have grown larger and larger – operations are clearly at their physical limits. Time is running out for enhancements and improvements, if mining is to continue, a drastic paradigm shift seems to be the only solution. This paradigm shift will require humanity to mine more efficiently and intelligently, by aiming to extract only these rocks that contain the ore and doing so in a manner, which results in the smallest possible ecological footprint. This is where OffWorld’s Swarm Robotic Mining Architecture comes into play. The overarching purpose of OffWorld is to enable the human settlement of space by developing a new generation of small, smart, learning industrial robots. This robotic workforce has numerous things to do: build landing pads, excavate underground habitats, extract water ice and materials, make drinkable water, breathable air and rocket propellant, manufacture basic structures and solar cells, produce electricity, etc. OffWorld’s overall vision is to operate thousands of robots that can mine, manufacture and build on the Moon, the as-teroids and Mars. These robots need to be small and robust, extremely adaptable, modular and reconfigurable, autonomous and fast learning – they are lightyears ahead of the 2 million industrial robots that currently work in factories and warehouses. Space is a tough place. The environment is harsh, resources are limited and the room for errors is close to zero. If a robot can succeed in space than it can surely excel in the terrestrial industry as well. This and the fact that OffWorld builds a swarm approach that relies on a small form factor, intelligence and surgical precision, has the potential to reduce the total cost of operations, can shorten the life of mine or industrial operation and can be easily scaled up and down in size. With all these benefits in mind, OffWorld is looking into a reduction in the total cost of operations of at least an order of magnitude within any industrial sector. This paper will introduce the design philosophy behind OffWorld’s robotic work-force and will present the masterplan for developing space-bound systems by first maturing them in large scale deployments in terrestrial industries.

Abstract:
In modern day communication systems, there is a constant demand for increase in transmission rates. This is however limited by the bandwidth limitation of the channel. Inter symbol interference (ISI) imposes a great threat to increasing data rates by degrading the signal quality. Equalizers are used at the receiver to compensate for the losses in the channel and thereby greatly mitigate ISI. Further, an adaptive equalizer is desired which can be used over a channel whose response is unknown or is time-varying. A low power equalizing solution in a moderately attenuated channel is an analog peaking filter which boosts the signal high frequency components. Such conventional continuous time linear equalizers (CTLE) provide a single degree of controllability over the high frequency boost. A more complex CTLE has been designed which has two degrees of freedom by controlling the high frequency boost as well as the range of frequencies over which the boost is applied. This extra degree of controllability over the equalizer response is desired to better adapt to the varying channel response and result in an equalized signal with a wider eye opening. A robust adaptation technique is necessary to tune the equalizer characteristics. Some of the commonly used techniques for adaptation of CTLEs are based on energy comparison criterion in the frequency domain. But the adaptation achieved using these techniques might not be optimal especially for an equalizer with two degrees of controllability. In such cases an eye opening monitor (EOM) could be used which evaluates the actual signal quality in time domain. The EOM gives an estimate on the signal quality by measuring the eye opening of the equalized signal in horizontal and vertical domain. In this thesis work a CTLE with two degrees of freedom with an EOM based adaptation system has been implemented.

Eames, Eric M. "Monarch Cheers, Integration Whimpers, and a Loyalty Conflict: Kansas City Call's Coverage of the Black Yankees, 1937-1955." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2008. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1929.

Full text
Abstract:
Already regarded as one of the top teams in Negro League baseball, the Kansas City Monarchs became known as a powerhouse unit in the 1930s and 40s. They rolled into towns with lights, amazing athletes, and competitive play. They won championship after championship during these years as Kansas City baseball fans strongly supported them. As they became an integral part of the city, the Monarchs' success, open-seating policy, and jazzy home openers fostered a large following of mixed-race fans. The local black newspaper, the Kansas City Call, held them up on a pedestal, while sportswriters for the mainstream Kansas City Star/Times downplayed the Monarchs' accomplishments and influence in the community. This thesis focuses on the relationship the Call had with the best team in black baseball through the context of its treatment of games, players, league officials, and team owners, as well as other patterns and tactics. Analysis of the Star/Times coverage is also considered to show variances in coverage between one city's race-divided newspapers. Negro League baseball and the African American newspapers that covered the teams grew out of and illustrated the segregation laws and prejudices feelings that existed in the United States during most of the twentieth century. Over time, especially when the sports world moved into the post-integration period, the Call's bolstering of the Monarchs deteriorated as the paper's promotion of democracy steered its sportswriters away from a baseball organization that symbolized segregation. The different types of coverage by the Call throughout the twenty-year study can be described as all-out promotion, balance, and abandonment. In the 1950s nostalgia and conflict existed, as the Call's sportswriters became torn on how to cover a team that was once the pride of the black community, but now represented inequality. In an attempt to remedy this torment, the Call tried to convince black baseball officials to remove the “Negro League” stigma by signing players of all races in order to mirror the more democratic Major Leagues. The white press, meanwhile, ignored the bigger issues of black baseball as one Negro League team after another died in the 1950s. The Star/Times peripheral coverage of the Monarchs provides context to the social issues and discriminatory practices at play in Missouri. As this thesis outlines the coverage of the Monarchs through the Black and White newspapers of Kansas City, previous research is substantiated and challenged to provide a fuller account of Jim Crow's effects.

Abstract:
Paper [I] tests the success rate of trades and the returns of the Opening Range Breakout (ORB) strategy. A trader that trades on the ORB strategy seeks to identify large intraday price movements and trades only when the price moves beyond some predetermined threshold. We present an ORB strategy based on normally distributed returns to identify such days and find that our ORB trading strategy result in significantly higher returns than zero as well as an increased success rate in relation to a fair game. The characteristics of such an approach over conventional statistical tests is that it involves the joint distribution of low, high, open and close over a given time horizon. Paper [II] measures the returns of a popular day trading strategy, the Opening Range Breakout strategy (ORB), across volatility states. We calculate the average daily returns of the ORB strategy for each volatility state of the underlying asset when applied on long time series of crude oil and S&P 500 futures contracts. We find an average difference in returns between the highest and the lowest volatility state of around 200 basis points per day for crude oil, and of around 150 basis points per day for the S&P 500. This finding suggests that the success in day trading can depend to a large extent on the volatility of the underlying asset. Paper [III] performs empirical analysis on short-term and long-term Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA) strategies regarding their exposures to unanticipated risk shocks. Previous research documents that CTA strategies offer diversification opportunities during equity market crisis situations when evaluated as a group, but do not separate between short-term and long-term CTA strategies. When separating between short-term and long-term CTA strategies, this paper finds that only short-term CTA strategies provide a significant, and consistent, exposure to unanticipated risk shocks while long-term CTA strategies do not. For the purpose of diversifying a portfolio during equity market crisis situations, this result suggests that an investor should allocate to short-term CTA strategies rather than to long-term CTA strategies.

This thesis aims to study work position designated for contract employees in Taiwan which is increasingly adopted as non-traditional employment by enterprises given the currently labor market. The research draws conclusions on the motives regarding employment status made by contract employees, and put forth implications on employment opening for companies in their recruitment efforts. 600 samples of job positions on websites were obtained for the study. The results show that (1) position location is strongly correlated to the choice of opening(contracted or full-time); as the position is toward the south of Taiwan the opening is more likely set as contracted position. (2) Status requirement is another significant factor; contracted opening is preferred when status goes from ‘no preference’, ‘currently working’ to ‘currently working/recent graduates/currently in night-time study’. (3) Work experience is the third significant factor; contracted opening is preferred when work experience requirements become more stringent, from ‘no preference” to having certain restrictions. (4) Finally, language requirement also significantly affect the setting of position; contracted opening is preferred when the language skills possessed moves from ‘no preference’ to Taiwanese, Hakka and on to English and Japanese. (5) Interestingly, when employer is a typical profit-making enterprise, full time employees are more preferable. Charles Handy mentioned in Elephants and Fleas the concept of a “shamrock organization” and future organizations would comprise core teams, contractors and flexible labor. Human resources management amongst these three areas is the key for an enterprise to retain flexibility and competitiveness.

Nowadays, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is one of the important research topics in automotive research field, which applies many state-of-art machine learning technologies. However, there is no satisfied safety solution for motorcycles in urban area with complex traffic flow. A cyclist is at the risk of fetal accidents every time on the road. Every year many motorcycle cyclists meet fetal collision by suddenly opened car door of cars parked in roadside. Thus there is an urgent need for motorcycle anti-collision system. This paper developed an intelligent safety system for motorcycles for anti-collision prediction by using machine learning and deep learning technologies. The proposed system creates a novel vision-based intelligent framework which can extract image features based on multiple methods such as deep learning networks with Faster Region Convolutional Neural N etworks (Faster R-CNN) model under Tensorflow environment. This intelligent vision-based detection system then can capture sampling frames from real-time video stream which is recorded by a camera. The detection segment of this system can identify target object and extract its image features. Then a multi-layer segment based on Faster R-CNN deep leaning model provides classification functions for real-time decision making. This decision then becomes an important factor to trigger emergency alarm and protection control. By this way, this system can then provide real-time detection of suddenly car-door opening and launch warning alarm and protection control. To develop this system, thousands of frames of car-door opening or closed car door were taken. And these frames are for training and testing in the machine learning. From the results, up to 99% of the events of suddenly car-door opening can be successfully detected by our system. It concludes that our system can provide good real-time anti-collision function for motorcycles, and significantly reduce cyclists’ risk of fetal collision by sudden car-door opening.

Recent years, as citizens in Taiwan struggle to raise their standard of living, traffic grows with the increasing number of population and vehicles and, it make quality control of pavement maintenance of highway turn to difficult to be commanded. Generally, for the reason of keeping traffic passing smoothly, the overlay works of pavement maintenance were pressed to perform through midnight to next morning, and that way makes the asphalt concrete can not get a sufficient time lag to gain an anticipated strength. Because of insufficient time lag before opening to driving vehicle, the overlaid asphalt concrete has not yet gained an anticipated strength to prevent plastic deformation from wheel loads for pavement subjected to heavy traffic. Therefore, it is important to study the optimum time lag for vehicle admittance during the overlay works performed. In this study, the specimens used for wheel trace tests were made in the condition of optimum asphalt content which derived from marshal’s mix design. And then these specimens were tested at a series of temperature conditions (80oC, 70oC, 60oC, 50oC, 40oC) to simulate the after-final-rolling field condition of temperature descending and the corresponding rut failure of an overlaid asphalt concrete course which subjected to wheels loading of trucks. And the intent of sufficient time lag for a newly overlaid asphalt concrete course is to determine an adequate temperature with respect to a time lag of temperature descending which admitting traffic passing without plastic deformation. The results of this study indicate that the mechanism of rut failure of asphalt concrete is dominated by higher viscosity of asphalt at the temperature of 50oC. While at the temperature higher than 60oC, the mechanism of rut failure of asphalt concrete turn to the aggregate interlock control gradually. According to the results of this study, for a newly overlaid course, the descending temperature adequate for opening to driving vehicle is 50oC and, the optimum time lag with respect to temperature-time descending curve is 108~126 min for winter, 126~144 min for spring, 162~180 min for summer and 144~162 min for autumn.

In the past few years, the quality control of highway pavement maintenance becomes more difficult with increasing traffic and vehicle loading. Usually, the overlay works of pavement maintenance were pressed to perform through midnight to next morning, and often releases 1~2 hr after for maintaining the effect of highway service. Because of the insufficient time lag, the overlay asphalt concrete has not yet gained an anticipated strength to resist the wheel loads. Meanwhile, plastic deformation occurs, and causes the pavement’s long-term failure. In the research, asphalt concrete with different asphalt is used under 40℃ and 60℃ for Wheel-tracking Test and to estimate the ability of different kind of asphalt concrete to resist permanent deformation. In the aspect of choosing the timing to admit traffic passing, with ACI-20 asphalt and the high stiffness asphalt, which now commonly used, to perform Marshal’s Mix Design to get the optimum of asphalt, and use the optimum to make AC specimen and run the indirect tension test, the Dynamic Elastic Modulus test and the Wheel-tracking Test, to determine the type of rutting and it’s magnitude under different temperature (30、40、50、60、70 and 80℃), subsequently analyzing the result and determine the most appropriate temperature of admitting passing; Moreover, this research simulates the average temperatures of the annual four seasons and performs the experiment of temperature descending indoors after the after-final-rolling of the asphalt concrete, and actually performs the experiment of temperature descending in situation. Analysis is done and the results are interpreted to determine the most appropriate opening time to traffic. The results of this study can be concluded as follows: 1. Asphalt concrete with high stiffness asphalt can provided a better performance of rut resistance under high temperature. 2. In these series simulation tests, the mechanism of development of the rut was controlled by the viscosity of the asphalt under the condition of temperature recommended for opening to traffic, and was turned to controlled by the interlock effect with the temperature increased. 3. According to the results of this study, for a newly overlaid course, the descending temperature adequate for opening to driving vehicle is 50℃ for ACI-20 asphalt, and 60℃ for high stiffness asphalt. 4. By analyzing the soften point of the asphalt, the descending temperature adequate for opening to driving is near the soften point, and that means the higher the soften point is, the higher the descending temperature we gets. 5. The decreasing rates of the temperature inside the different depths were nearly the same, but the temperature gradient would become more evidently with the depth increasing.

Kujala, Will. "Origins and openings: modernity, time, and finitude in Hobbes' political science." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/7518.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the politics of foundations in modern political thought through a reading and immanent critique of Hobbes’s Leviathan. I argue that his thought exemplifies a specifically modern problem of foundations insofar as he must establish political and scientific foundations on the basis of precisely the impossibility of foundation. Hobbes’s account of political founding and the establishment of scientific foundations is first and foremost a response to a condition of finitude in which foundations are no longer given or available but nevertheless demanded. While it appears that Hobbes describes the finitude of ‘Man’ and natural bodies and derives his political theory from these, in fact for Hobbes these no longer provide given foundations for political thought, but must themselves be posited in acts of political and epistemological projection. Hobbes’s politics of foundations therefore demands that we fabricate political and scientific foundations for ourselves and act as if they are not incalculable postulations but calculable necessities. I call this the problem of projection, in which political knowledge is possible only because we make it and posit it ourselves. Through a reading of the role of the metaphor of making in Hobbes’s account of political origins and sovereignty, I argue that this reading of Hobbes’s politics of origins as the institution of foundations in the face of the impossibility of foundation exposes finitude as a groundlessness to which there is no necessary political response. It does not necessarily demand the production of foundations through the institution of sovereignty. Hobbes’s Leviathan therefore provides a site in which we might begin to ask more precise empirical and theoretical questions about the transformative possibilities in the modern politics of foundations.

With the development of science and technology, advances in hardware equipment and services, improvement of network speed that internet can provide more and varied services. People increasingly expect to complete all things in the network which must go out to perform in the past. But connected through the Internet, people can not contact face to face. How can we confirm the user's identity has been an important issue. More and more attacks arise in the network, which will theft account information. Old method likes fixed password that gradually can not prevent new attacks. The new authentication mechanisms need to be raised, and how to strike a balance between safety and convenience is important . Based on security, the use of OTP (one-time password) on the authentication mechanism for authentication was been used in this paper. Each password can only be used in once time ,that can greatly reduce the risk caused by password theft. In the transmission, we use AES encryption technology to protect, reduce the chances of suffering from cracked. In the respect of convenience ,we added OpenID that reducing the steps of repeated login. The way of password input used sliding replace the previous keyboard key-in to login with the smart phone or tablet allows authentication more convenient.

The negative pressure isolation ward in hospitals aims to reduce the spread of infectious diseases and to control pathogen infection. Generally, health care systems use “interlock design” as a protection between negative pressure isolation wards, front wards and common corridors. This prevents doors connecting two wards and corridors open simultaneously, which may lead to diffusion of pollutants. However, infectious pollutants leak to front wards under the protection of “interlock design”. Therefore this study designed an “air curtain” between the negative pressure isolation ward and the front ward, in order to control the diffusion of infectious pollutants. Furthermore, this report studied the pollutant diffusion under different opening time of the air curtain and under several pressure differences between wards. This study found that regardless 4 Pa or 8 Pa pressure differential, with the setting of opening the air curtain before opening the door, had the best efficiency of pollutant diffusion control. This phenomenon illustrates that the use of "air curtain isolation" has to be operated with proper opening time, in order achieve the optimal pollutant diffusion control. In Case 4 and Case 8 (opening the air curtain before opening the door) the pollutant diffusion control efficiency were leveled by 20.83% ~ 25.45% and 15.91% ~ 29.63%, respectively. Moreover comparing Case 4 and Case 8, Case 8 had a higher control efficiency by 5.26% ~ 8.89% than Case 4.

Abstract:

A sudden dam failure is usually simulated by the rapid removal of a gate in laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The gate-opening time is often determined according to the Lauber and Hager instantaneous collapse criterion (referred to as Lauber-Hager criterion) established for a rectangular open channel with a dry bed. However, this criterion is not suitable for non-rectangular channels or initial wet-bed conditions. In this study, the effect of the gate-opening time on the wave evolution is investigated by using the large eddy simulation (LES) model. The instantaneous dam break, namely the dam break without a gate, is simulated for comparison. A gate-opening criterion for generating dam-break flow in non-rectangular wet bed channel is proposed in this study, which can be used as an extension of the Lauber-Hager criterion and provides a more comprehensive and reasonable estimate of the gate opening time.

The purpose of this study, based on Chinese calendaring and Opening time, is to explicate the profitable distinction among accounting firms. First of all, according to the research, it appears that the owners of accounting firms mostly started business without calendaring to specify in felicitous lunar year as the opening time; furthermore, most started business on ominous month. Secondly, those which started their business in felicitous lunar year profited well; however, those which started business on felicitous lunar month profited no better than those at random did. Thirdly, tiny accounting firms which started business in felicitous lunar year profited well; on the contrary, those on felicitous lunar month profited badly. The last, sole firms which started in felicitous lunar year profited well; however, those which started business on felicitous lunar month profited badly to the contrary. The results of this research probably could provide significant reference for those who manage accounting firms to decide the proper opening time.

In recent years, there are many traffic accidents caused by the driver or passengers open the vehicle door without paying attention to the rear of the vehicles. In order to prevent this kind of traffic accidents, this paper proposed a warning system to monitor the rear road condition through a camera mounted on the side view mirror, and use image processing techniques and deep learning to detect vehicles that are getting close from behind and set the warning area for daytime and nighttime scene. When one of the method does not detect the vehicles, we use another detect result to determine if there has dangerous to open the vehicle door. When both methods detect the vehicles, this paper determined whether the detected vehicles is the same vehicle. We use the detected result of deep learning to determine if there has dangerous to open the vehicle door. When neither image processing techniques nor deep learning are detect the vehicle, Kalman filtering is used to predict the position of the vehicle using vehicle history information. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed vehicle detection achieve 88.9% accuracy in daytime scene, and the accuracy of vehicle detection in nighttime scene is 90.4%. The FPS of proposed method is more than 20 FPS.

Stoddard, Rhonda Louise. "Development of real-time mechanistic tools for the elucidation of catalytic reaction mechanisms." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/5560.

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanism of a conjugate addition of an alcohol to an alkynic acid ester using a phosphine catalyst was investigated using pressurized sample infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (PSI-ESI-MS) and proton and phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Since ESI-MS only detects charged species, and only the phosphonium intermediates and by-products were visible by ESI-MS, 1H NMR was used to track the disappearance of the starting alkyne and the appearance of the conjugate addition product over time. 31P NMR was used to quantify the ESI-MS results. By-product formation was shown to out-compete product formation upon fast addition of alkyne, but with dropwise addition of alkyne, product was shown to dominate. A detailed numerical model was developed using PowerSim software to test mechanistic hypotheses. The experimental results were shown to be consistent with the mechanism proposed by Inanaga, and the cycle was elaborated to account for by-product formation. Piers’catalyst, a ruthenium complex with a phosphonium-functionalized carbene ligand, is a fast-initiating living catalyst for a number of olefin metathesis reactions, including ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and cross metathesis (CM). Catalyst speciation was monitored in real-time for the ROMP of norbornene and the CM of 1-hexene using PSI-ESI-MS. The expected mass distribution of charged polymer-catalyst species were not observed, but merely catalyst and decomposition species were visible by ESI-MS. NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used to determine quantitatively the presence of polymer and the polydispersity index, respectively. The results suggest that while Piers’ catalyst is indeed fast-initiating, the propagation rate greatly outstrips the initiation rate. In a foray into the area of chemical education, a well-known pH-induced colour change exhibited by the anthocyanins in red cabbage was developed into a simple – and ingestible – classroom demonstration.

Global warming effects are having more and more impacts on the environment in recent years. Thus, the areas of ice melting in the Arctic Ocean are getting larger dramatically. As the ice-free season becomes longer, the navigable period along Arctic shipping routes becomes longer. This situation makes it possible to be profitable when operating Arctic shipping routes. This research investigates the advantages and disadvantages with different navigable season length. We use Shanghai-Hamburg route as an example for the analyses. The navigation distance is shortened by 20% if Northern Sea Route (NSR) is used instead of traditional Suez Channel Route. More trips (12%) can be arranged for the same period of time and less oil (save 24%~26%) is consumed for each round-way trip by using NSR. The size effect on transportation cost per TEU is also very important. Larger container ships should be used when deeper shipping routes are available in Arctic region.

Taiwan has started to adopt International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) since 2013. As the opening undistributed earnings of an entity may increase or decrease on account of the first-time adoption of the IFRS, the management may consider to increase or decrease dividend distribution for the transitional year (2012). This study is to examine the effect of increase or decrease of undistributed earnings, and appropriation of special reserve such as unrealized revaluation increments or cumulative translation adjustment on the dividend policy for the year of 2012. This study employs Taiwanese non-financial listed companies from 2010-2012 as the sample. The increase or decrease of undistributed earnings is measured by the difference between IFRS undistributed earnings and ROC GAAP undistributed earnings. The multivariate regression analysis is applied for this empirical study. The evidence shows that the increase or decrease of undistributed earnings due to the first-time adoption of IFRS of Taiwanese listed companies did not significantly change the dividend distribution during the transitional period, and the appropriation of special reserve by unrealized revaluation increments or cumulative translation adjustment even decreased the dividend distribution during the transitional period.

In this paper, we examine monthly tourist arrivals from Japan between January 2000 and October 2014. Our aim is to find whether a crowding-out effect occurred on tourist arrivals from Japan after the opening policy for Chinese tourists and if this made Japanese tourists take a trip to Taiwan’s neighboring countries, such as Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore. We used a SARIMA model to forecast tourist arrivals from Japan. The results show that in the first three years after the opening policy, the number of Japanese tourists in Taiwan decreased, but Korea had more tourists from Japan. As for Hong Kong and Singapore, there was no big change in the number of Japanese tourists. In addtion to discussing the crowding-out effects, we also pay attention to environmental carrying capacity. Lastly, this study provides relevant advice and hopes to reduce the negative impacts of tourism development and maintain the economic benefits of tourism.
