ABSTRACT‘Meta-operas’, that is, operas portraying the world of opera and its protagonists (such as impresarios, music directors, librettists and virtuosi), became increasingly common during the eighteenth century. Most of the scholarly literature on meta-opera, however, concentrates on the operas' poetic texts, their librettos. Scholars have dealt with these operas about operas almost as though they were spoken dramas, without taking into account the many ways in which metatheatrical practices and conventions are made more complex by the presence of music. What do meta-operatic scores look like

A general assumption persists among musicologists and dance historians that dance in seventeenth-century operas was a French phenomenon, with Italians only occasionally staging a final ballo. In large part the assumption is the result of lack of information concerning dance in seventeenth-century opera, due, particularly in comparison with other periods, to limited source material and limited research. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that when Italian operas included balli at the end of one or more acts, dance indications in the librettos tended to be brief, and the dance music appear

Alfred, Dvořåk's first opera, has long hovered at the edge of our awareness of the composer. If there are signs of a growing realization that opera was to Dvořåk quite as important as other areas of his output, the detail needed to flesh out the picture of ‘Dvořåk the opera composer’ is to a large extent lacking. In the case of the composer's first six operas the inaccessibility of material has meant that an assessment of his early work in the area is still very much the province of specialist scholars. Each of these sections is divided into subsections. The libretto is aphoristic in nature and dictates the form of each of these subsections. The division into two parts also serves as a means to evoke a sense of hopelessness of emotions in the first and a transforming disposition that culminates in a jubilant song in the second.

The first scene is the exposition, scenes two through four are the development, and the fifth scene the recapitulation. Also at this level can be seen the overall arch shape of the formal structure. Abstract:
AbstractSimple light isotope metabolic labeling (bSLIM) is an innovative method to accurately quantify differences in protein abundance at the proteome level in standard bottom-up experiments. The quantification process requires computation of the ratio of intensity of several isotopologs in the isotopic cluster of every identified peptide. Thus, appropriate bioinformatic workflows are required to extract the signals from the instrument files and calculate the required ratio to infer peptide/protein abundance. In a previous study (Sénécaut et al., J Proteome Res 20:1476–1487, 2021), we developed original open-source workflows based on OpenMS nodes implemented in a KNIME working environment. Here, we extend the use of the bSLIM labeling strategy in quantitative proteomics by presenting an alternative procedure to extract isotopolog intensities and process them by taking advantage of new functionalities integrated into the Minora node of Proteome Discoverer 2.4 software. We also present a graphical strategy to evaluate the statistical robustness of protein quantification scores and calculate the associated false discovery rates (FDR). We validated these approaches in a case study in which we compared the differences between the proteomes of two closely related yeast strains.

Opera composers adapting The Merchant of Venice have given Shylock a distinctive sound using musical techniques that mark him as a classic outsider. Drawing on the scores of ten of these operas this essay highlights five compositional strategies for characterizing Shylock. Separately, these strategies highlight subtle shifts in the portrayal of Jews across different eras and localities. Together, they point to a deeper portrayal of Jews as figures who live on the margins of European tonality. Shylock in these operas projects an ambiguous social status and lack of alignment with the more consonant world of the other characters.

Abstract Theories of narrative devote much attention to temporal structures, distinguishing between the “time of the thing told” and the “time of the telling.” Chapter 2 investigates the temporal elements of order, duration, and frequency in Handel’s operas, investigating especially the relationship between “clock-time” (the time that passes in the opera house during performance), and “story-time” (the time span represented as passing in the story-world of an opera), illustrating how radically time-structures in opera diverge from those familiar to us in spoken drama. In the process, the chapter shows that the standard description of temporal “jerks and pauses” between recitative and aria is often inaccurate, considering certain instances in which at least some time can clearly be shown to have elapsed during an aria, and others in which the passing of clock- and story-time seems to be nearly equivalent, analyzing both Handel’s scores and modern productions of his operas.

In addition to popular and art songs, for there would always be songs even at a slower rate, and in addition to pieces for children and the first of an increasing number of serious instrumental compositions, he also experimented with short operas and film scores. Roughly within the span of the decade, he would write five operas (if Kittiwake Island is included in the category), four of them with Arnold Sundgaard and one with William Engvick. Industrial systems that form the basis of our daily lives, such as railroads, medicine, and aviation, function as socio-technical systems with complex and large-scale characteristics. As a methodology for the safe operation of such systems, measures to enhance "resilience potential," the ability to flexibly respond to changes in circumstances, such as unexpected behavior or unknown events, are attracting attention. Through an experimental approach, this study aims to clarify what strategies and cognitive factors cause differences in performance among operators and how these differences relate

As deep learning advances, there is an ever-growing demand for models capable of synthesizing information from multi-modal resources to address the complex tasks raised from real-life applications. Recently, many large multi-modal datasets have been collected, on which researchers actively explore different methods of fusing multi-modal information. However, little attention has been paid to quantifying the contribution of different modalities within the proposed models. In this paper, we propose the SHapley vAlue-based PErceptual (SHAPE) scores that measure the marginal contribution of indivi

Abstract:
This paper takes advantage of a quasi-natural experiment in Peru by which the privatized telecommunications company was required by government to randomly install and operate public pay phones in small rural towns throughout the national territory. Using a specially designed household survey for a representative sample of rural towns, it is possible to link access to telephone services with household income. It was found that, regardless of the income measurement, most characteristics of public telephone usage are positively linked with income. Remarkably, the benefits occur at both non-farm a
