Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the methodology of material and technical support of railway transport. According to the types of activities, the nature of the material and technical resources used, technologies, means and management systems, Russian railways belong to the category of high-tech industries that must have high quality and technical level, reliability and technological efficiency in operation. For this reason, the logistics system itself, both in structure and in the algorithm of the functions performed as a whole, needs a serious improvement in the quality of its work. The economic situation in Russia requires a revision of the principles and mechanisms of management based on the corporate model of supply chain management, focused on logistics knowledge. In the difficult economic conditions of the current decade, it is necessary to improve the quality of the supply organization of enterprises and structural divisions of railway transport, directly related to the implementation of the process approach, the advantage of which is a more detailed regulation of management actions and their mutual coordination. In order to increase the efficiency of its activities and develop the management system, Russian Railways is developing a lean production system aimed at further expanding the implementation of the principles of customer orientation, ideology and corporate culture.
 At the present time, the solution of many issues is impossible without a cybernetic approach to the formulation of problems of material and technical support and logistics analysis of information technologies, to the implementation of the developed algorithms and models of development strategies and concepts for improving the business processes of the production system. The management strategy, or the general plan for the implementation of activities for the management of material resources, is based on a fundamental assessment of the alignment and correlation of forces and factors operating in the economic and political field, taking into account the impact on the specific form of the management strategy.
 The materials will be useful to the heads and specialists of the directorates of the MTO, CDZs and can be used in the scientific research of bachelors, masters and postgraduates interested in the economics of railway transport and supply logistics.

The monograph discusses the application of telematics in dispatch control systems in urban passenger transport. The role of telematics as a technological basis in automating the solution of control tasks, accounting and analysis of the volume and quality of transport work in modern dispatch control systems on urban passenger transport is shown. Analytical models have been developed to estimate the capacity of a high-speed bus transportation system on a dedicated line. Mathematical models and algorithms for predicting passenger vehicle interior filling at critical stages of urban passenger transport routes are presented. The issues of application of the concept of the phase space of states introduced by the authors to assess the quality of the passenger transportation process on the route of urban passenger transport are described. The developed classification of service levels and their application in order to inform passengers at stopping points about the degree of filling of the passenger compartment of the arriving vehicle is described. The material is based on the results of theoretical research and practical work on the creation and implementation of automated control systems for urban passenger transport in Russian cities. The material of M.H. Duque Sarango's dissertation submitted for the degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences in the specialty 05.22.10 "Operation of motor transport" was used.

Abstract:
Presented reasearch aimed to develop and analyse the suitability of the CART models for prediction of the extent and probability of occurrence of damage to outer soil layers caused by timber harvesting performed under varied conditions. Having employed these models, the author identified certain methods of logging works and conditions, under which they should be performed to minimise the risk of damaging forest soils. The analyses presented in this work covered the condition of soils upon completion of logging works, which was investigated in 48 stands located in central and south-eastern Poland. In the stands selected for these studies a few felling treatments were carried out, including early thinning, late thinning and final felling. Logging works were performed with use of the most popular technologies in Poland. Trees were cut down with chainsaws and timber was extracted by means of various skidding methods: with horses, semi-suspended skidding with the use of cable yarding systems, farm tractors equipped with cable winches or tractors of a skidder type, and forwarding employing farm tractors with trailers loaded mechanically by cranes or manually. The analyses also included mechanised forest operation with the use of a harvester and a forwarder. The information about the extent of damage to soil, in a form of wheel-ruts and furrows, gathered in the course of soil condition inventory served for construction of regression tree models using the CART method (Classification and Regression Trees), based on which the area, depth and the volume of soil damage under analysis, wheel-ruts and furrows, were determined, and the total degree of all soil disturbances was assessed. The CART classification trees were used for modelling the probability of occurrence of wheel-ruts and furrows, or any other type of soil damage. Qualitative independent variables assumed by the author for developing the models included several characteristics describing the conditions under which the logging works were performed, mensuration data of the stands and the treatments conducted there. These characteristics covered in particular: the season of the year when logging works were performed, the system of timber harvesting employed, the manner of timber skidding, the means engaged in the process of timber harvesting and skidding, habitat type, crown closure, and cutting category. Moreover, the author took into consideration an impact of the quantitative independent variables on the extent and probability of occurrence of soil disturbance. These variables included the following: the measuring row number specifying a distance between the particular soil damage and communication tracks, the age of a stand, the soil moisture content, the intensity of a particular cutting treatment expressed by units of harvested timber volume per one hectare of the stand, and the mean angle of terrain inclination. The CART models developed in these studies not only allowed the author to identify the conditions, under which the soil damage of a given degree is most likely to emerge, or determine the probability of its occurrence, but also, thanks to a graphical presentation of the nature and strength of relationships between the variables employed in the model construction, they facilitated a recognition of rules and relationships between these variables and the area, depth, volume and probability of occurrence of forest soil damage of a particular type. Moreover, the CART trees served for developing the so-called decision-making rules, which are especially useful in organising logging works. These rules allow the organisers of timber harvest to plan the management-related actions and operations with the use of available technical means and under conditions enabling their execution in such manner as to minimise the harm to forest soils. Furthermore, employing the CART trees for modelling soil disturbance made it possible to evaluate particular independent variables in terms of their impact on the values of dependent variables describing the recorded disturbance to outer soil layers. Thanks to this the author was able to identify, amongst the variables used in modelling the properties of soil damage, these particular ones that had the greatest impact on values of these properties, and determine the strength of this impact. Detailed results depended on the form of soil disturbance and the particular characteristics subject to analysis, however the variables with the strongest influence on the extent and probability of occurrence of soil damage, under the conditions encountered in the investigated stands, enclosed the following: the season of the year when logging works were performed, the volume-based cutting intensity of the felling treatments conducted, technical means used for completion of logging works, the soil moisture content during timber harvest, the manner of timber skidding, dragged, semi-suspended or forwarding, and finally a distance between the soil damage and transportation ducts. The CART models proved to be very useful in designing timber harvesting technologies that could minimise the risk of forest soil damage in terms of both, the extent of factual disturbance and the probability of its occurrence. Another valuable advantage of this kind of modelling is an opportunity to evaluate an impact of particular variables on the extent and probability of occurrence of damage to outer soil layers. This allows the investigator to identify, amongst all of the variables describing timber harvesting processes, those crucial ones, from which any optimisation process should start, in order to minimise the negative impact of forest management practices on soil condition.

The aim of the e-book is to present the theoretical, cognitive and practical aspects of the essence and complexity of operational management in a production company. The presented modern production methods together with the challenges and problems of contemporary enterprises should better help to understand the issues of sustainable development, with particular emphasis on waste. The book consists of six chapters devoted to relevant and topic issues relating to the core business of an industrial enterprise. Chapter 1 The nature of the industrial enterprise is an introduction to further considerations and deals with the essence of the basic aspects of the company. Both popular and less known definitions of an enterprise, its features, functions and principles of operation are presented. An important part of the chapter is the presentation and formulation of strategic, tactical and operational goals. Moreover, the division of enterprises is presented with the use of various criteria and the features of the industrial market, which make it distinct. Chapter 2 The operational management evolution and its role in the industrial enterprise discusses the evolution and concept of production and operational management. The management levels were also presented, indicating their most important functions. An integral part of the chapter is the essence of the production system, viewed through the prism of the five elements. Chapter 3 Functions and role in operations management presents the issues concerning the organization of production processes, production capacity and inventory management. This part also presents considerations on cooperation and collaboration between enterprises in the process of creating value. Chapter 4 Traditional methods used in operational activities focuses on methods such as benchmarking, outsourcing, core competences, JIT, MPR I and MRP II, as well as TQM and kaizen. Human factors is the study of how interactions between organizations, tasks, and the individual worker impact human behaviour and affect systems performance. The importance of human factors in anaesthesia and critical care has been increasingly recognized, leading to its inclusion in the European-wide standards for patient safety in anaesthesiology within the Helsinki Declaration for Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology. ‘Person’ factors include permanent characteristics such as an individual’s personality and temporary influences such as physical condition, stress, morale, and workload. ‘Task’ factors include task complexity, preparation and checking, timing, equipment, and working environment. ‘Organization’ factors include communication, leadership, staffing levels, and organizational (safety) culture. While some of these features rely on the technical domain of anaesthetic/critical care practice, most are in the domain of ‘non-technical’ skills. This chapter reviews a number of these influences in detail and describes how non-technical aspects of practice can be encouraged and promoted. Simulation has been used as an educational tool in healthcare for some years, often with anaesthetists closely involved in establishing and running simulation centres and programmes. However, recent changes in medical education, coupled with public demands for increased patient safety, have brought simulation to the fore. This chapter reviews the classification of simulation systems and outlines the use of scenario-based and in situ simulation, before examining the evidence for its effectiveness. The authors emphasize that simulation provides a means for achieving an educational aim rather than being a technological end in its own right.

Brazilian agriculture reinvented itself by targeting a science-based approach. Embrapa, the research arm of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, is recognized as key in this process. A set of characteristics—public corporation model; scale of operation at national level; spatial decentralization; specialized research units; strong focus in human capital; a vision of an agriculture based on science and technology—explains Embrapa’s strength and achievements. Looking ahead, agricultural production needs to increase at least at the same pace of demand. Otherwise, prices will increase, and the poor will suffer the greatest impact. One of the greatest barriers to ensure modern technology will be more broadly and effectively adopted is market imperfection, which alters relative prices and the returns to investment in technologies. Reducing market imperfections is a necessary condition for expanding production in a more inclusive way, and to increase the effectiveness of policies targeting technology adoption by farmers.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is common clinical condition for which life-sustaining therapies fortunately exist. On a global basis, more than 2 million patients now receive chronic haemodialysis (HD) for treatment of ESRD. For the vast majority of these patients, treatment is provided in a dialysis unit on a thrice-weekly basis, although there is growing interest in alternative therapies which vary with respect to location or frequency. Based on the number of patients requiring chronic HD now and in the foreseeable future, it is imperative that nephrologists understand the basic principles underlying this treatment. The factors affecting the delivery of therapy in HD can substantially be divided into two groups: (a) factors affecting the performance of the dialytic technique, which are primarily related to the characteristics of the parameters involved in the dialytic technique; and (b) factors affecting the clinical results of a given technique, which are primarily related to the interaction between the water and solute removal capacity of the technique and the kinetics of water and solutes within the human body. In this group, factors including staff compliance with the orders, patient compliance with prescribed time, and the patient’s physical condition are also important.The focus of this chapter is the technical aspects of chronic HD prescription and delivery. After a brief review of the major components of the HD system (machine and extracorporeal circuit), the principles underlying solute and water removal are reviewed. The concept of clearance is then assessed, with particular emphasis on the determinants of small solute clearance with respect both to the dialyser and the patient.

Oceanography is a multidisciplinary science that deals with the physical, chemical, geological e biological aspects of the marine environment. As most of the sciences, oceanographic research relies heavily on sampling procedures, which can be rather simple, as obtaining a water sample at sea surface, or very complex, as bringing an uncontaminated sediment sample from hadal regions (up to 11,000 m deep) to the surface. Despite the sampling operation complexity, it is of primary importance the use of the adequate instrumentation, as well the expertise of the instrument operator. Ideally, the operator should have a good knowledge of the technical characteristics of the instruments themselves, as well as the correct procedures for their operation. In addition, he should be well acquainted to the ship equipment employed in the deployment, operation and retrieval of those instruments, including cables, winches and cranes. Only if these aspects are taken in account a reliable and safe operation can be attained. In this way, this guide was conceived as a basic reference for researchers in their on-board operations, although certainly being useful for a wide range of outdoor activities. It was based on the authors years of experience in field work onboard research and fishing vessels. It includes notions on nautical cables, onboard load handling equipment and hardware, basic ropework, basic net weaving and repairing and a nautical glossary.

Abstract:
Circumcision is a commonly performed operation. Regional analgesia is provided either by penile block or caudal block. Each approach to anesthetizing the penis has attendant risk and benefits. The provider has several decision points to observe when choosing which, if either, technique to apply. The basic anatomic factors (including the identification and significance of sacral dimples), technical steps, risks, and considerations of each are discussed. Overall, each block offers benefit to the patient, and choosing between them can be based on need for ambulation postoperatively, operator experience, and availability of appropriate equipment. When available, ultrasound can enhance the efficacy of penile nerve blocks.

Since 1969, the United Kingdom always has always had one submarine armed with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles underwater, undetected, in constant communication, ready at a set notice to fire at targets anywhere in the world. This is part of its Trident Programme, which includes the development, procurement, and operation of the current generation of British nuclear weapons, as well as the means to deliver them. Operated by the Royal Navy and based at Clyde Naval Base on Scotland’s west coast, it is the most expensive and most powerful capability of the British military forces. In 2016, the United Kingdom had to decide on whether to go ahead and build the next generation of nuclear submarines that will allow the UK to remain in the nuclear business well into the second half of this century. The book presents the political, cultural, technical, and strategic aspects of Trident to provide a thoughtful overview of the UK’s complex relationship with nuclear weapons. The authors, both scholars and practitioners, bring together diverse perspectives on the issue, discussing the importance of UK nuclear history as well as the political, legal, and diplomatic aspects of UK nuclear weapons—internationally and domestically. Also addressed are the new technical, military, and strategic challenges to the UK nuclear thinking and strategy.

The British welfare state is traditionally understood to be comprised of five main services: health, housing, social security, education and the ‘personal social services’, such as social care and child protection. This book offers an original take on the role of the state in relation to these services, along with three other areas where institutional services have been developed: employment services, equalities and public services, such as roads, parks, libraries and rescue services. Dismissing false and misleading narratives, the book profiles the real problems that need to be addressed and offers inspiration for a better path forward. The book begins with an introduction of the welfare state. Delivering welfare is treated as fulfilling a moral obligation to protect people, and across the world, systems of health and social security are typically delivered by a combination of state, voluntary, and mutualist arrangements. The book then looks into social security, which primarily covers pensions, provision for disability, meeting housing costs, and low-income earners. It then reviews the operation of the National Health Service which has fronted continual criticisms, and preventative healthcare had not been one of the NHS's major focuses. Medical care had been heavily individualised, thus, the concept of public health is not based on arguments by conventional medical care and individualisation. The book moves onto looking at social care, education, child protection, housing, employment services, equalities and human rights, and public services. Finally, the book focuses on the condition of the welfare state. It concludes that the welfare state has a major impact on disadvantages and securing the conditions of civilisation, wellbeing, and security, while the welfare state provisions protect people's rights.

The chapters include the following topics: selection of pneumatic actuators, control valves, design of pneumatic systems, design of control units, use of sensors, programming of simple and complex programmable logic controllers (PLCs), programming of robots, and safety ensuring in the operation of machines. The information contained in this book includes general and specific knowledge related to the construction, functioning and configuration of the components addressed for production automation. The knowledge is intended to assist the student’s preparation for practical exercises. Each chapter includes information on how to complete a laboratory exercise. The manual includes suggested tasks to be completed during the class. The instructions for completing the exercise indicate sample tools that the student can use to solve the task. The use of the indicated tool is not obligatory and can be replaced by another one chosen by the teacher. The topics of the handbook were selected based on the analysis of the expected competences of technical graduates, which are useful in their professional work

Abstract Scanning millions of faces each year, facial recognition technology (FRT) has become one of today’s fastest-growing and most controversial AI-driven surveillance technologies. Based on rare ethnographic access to police FRT deployments, this book examines the role and impact of this technology on operational practices, surveillance capabilities, and human rights protections. Drawing on the sociology of policing, science and technology studies, and human rights scholarship, the book demonstrates how this surveillance technology both shapes and is shaped by the complex operational environments into which it is deployed, in the process dramatically reshaping police–citizen street encounters. This unique analysis offers several empirically informed contributions that position FRT as a socio-technical system capable of changing the fundamental nature of policing. The affordances of FRT invite specific forms of surveillance expansion that override the intelligence case justifying an operation. Analysis of human–FRT interaction reveals a complex digital nuancing of suspicion, ultimately undermining the role of ‘human-in-the-loop’ safeguards and challenging the foundational legal principles governing state surveillance practices. The book also reveals the highly selective scientific and legal discourses used to legitimize AI-driven surveillance expansion. Here, oft-repeated claims of efficacy, racial impartiality, and public safety are found wanting when subjected to detailed scrutiny. The book draws additionally on the latest human rights theory and practice to specify a due diligence framework specifically tailored to the police FRT uses and, separately, advances the concept of ‘compound human rights harm’ to meaningfully capture the true impact of surveillance, and its multifaceted, complex, and dynamic effects.
