Marvin, Laurence W. The Damietta Crusade, 1217-1221. Oxford University PressOxford, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/9780198916208.001.0001.

Abstract:
Abstract The Damietta Crusade offers the first book-length monograph of the Fifth Crusade in almost forty years, and only the second in over a century. It emphasizes what made this campaign unique, from its planning, choice of target, its “brown-water” or amphibious nature, course, and result. It argues that the crusade’s planners worked from an achievable grand strategy: Jerusalem’s restoration to Latin Christian hands. Operationally the crusaders invaded Egypt, designed as a stratagem to threaten the economic hub of Cairo to force Jerusalem’s return. Once in Egypt, the crusaders had to deal first with the city of Damietta, which is where the main military campaign took place. Written for non-specialists, The Damietta Crusade offers a narrative and analysis grounded in the primary and relevant secondary sources. It presents a multi-sided perspective by describing and analyzing the Egyptians and other groups in the eastern Mediterranean who played a role in mounting a successful defense against Latin Christian forces. It contends that the crusade failed not because it derived from an unachievable or flawed grand strategy, but because of shifting operational goals, leadership issues, the social dynamics within the army, the arrival and departure of participants, and the effective defense led by Egypt’s sultan, al-Kamil. One of the surprises of this story is that the crusade ended with the men of the respective armies on relatively good terms with one another, suggesting it was never a “clash of civilizations.”

Abstract:
Dr Georg Winter developed a systematic model for integrating environmental considerations into all aspects of company operations of his family-owned business starting in the late 1960s. This concept grew to be the world’s first Integrated System of Environmental Management. In this book Peter Hundley shows how Dr Winter, driven by a deeper need to preserve the natural environment, embarked on a crusade to convince other business owners and managers, policy makers and governments of the need for environmental management – and was successful. Today virtually every major company and many small and medium-sized enterprises have adopted his concepts. Winter played a major role in the foundation of the International Network of Environmental Management.

Abstract:
During the last twenty-five years, we have witnessed a sea of change in the crusade against cartels. There are many reasons to believe that the environment is far less hospitable to firms forming and operating a cartel. Nevertheless, there is still the question for which we have yet to get an answer: Are there fewer cartels? Has the expansion of laws prohibiting collusion and the intensification of enforcement actually reduced the presence of cartels in the global economy? The purpose of this chapter is to put forth some concerns emanating from the lack of an answer, suggest some policies while we wait for an answer, and encourage competition authorities to work with academic scholars to find an answer.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the history of tobacco use in Major League Baseball (MLB). It begins with the story of Bill Tuttle, who chewed tobacco anywhere from ten to twelve hours a day for more than forty years and eventually developed oral cancer. A seemingly endless series of operations left Tuttle badly disfigured. In the spring of 1996, Tuttle, now head of the National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP), spearheaded a crusade to warn Major Leaguers about the dangers of smokeless tobacco. This chapter examines baseball's historical connection to the tobacco industry, first by tracing the beginnings of marketing tobacco through baseball. It then discusses the debate that arose in the late 1950s and early 1960s over athletic endorsements of tobacco products due to evidence linking smoking with carcinogenic effects. It also considers how the tobacco industry latched onto the notion, supported by dubious medical evidence, that smokeless tobacco was a safe alternative to cigarettes. Finally, it reflects on how the fight over tobacco products in baseball played out at the end of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Why did Britain invade Iraq in March 2003? Debate around Iraq focuses often on illegality, lies, incompetence, or the personal psychology of Tony Blair. ‘Operation Telic’ is often presented as a war of bad faith, waged by elites who had unspeakable secret motives. Beyond fixations with ‘dodgy dossiers’, the flaws of individual leaders, or intelligence failure, Iraq was a real ideological crusade, made by people who were true believers. Deploying primary documents and retrospective testimonies of participants, Blunder reconstructs the assumptions underlying decisions, the policy ‘world’ that participants inhabited 2001–2003, and the way decisions were made. Contrary to much of the existing literature, this book puts ideas in the centre of the story. As the book argues, Britain’s war in Iraq was caused by bad ideas that were dogmatically and widely held. Three ideas in particular formed the war’s intellectual foundations: the notion of the undeterrable, fanatical rogue state; the vision that the West’s path to security is to break and remake states; and the conceit that by paying the ‘blood price’, Britain could secure influence in Washington DC. These issues matter, because although the Iraq War happened years ago, it is still with us. As well as its severe consequences for regional and international security, the ideas that powered the war persist in Western security debate. If all wars are fought twice, first on the battlefield and the second time in memory, this book enters the battle over what Iraq means now, and what we should learn.
