Full textBackground: Today’s advanced surgery demands the theatre nurse to be highly skilled and competent. The theatre nurse is working in a constant developing environment. Her specific knowledge of perioperative care makes the theatre nurse a key-player in the operating team. The newly graduated theatre nurse lacks deeper competence in both working experience and professional skills that could help her meet the highly set standards in surgery. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine which challenges newly graduated theatre nurses experience and which coping strategies they use. Method: Six newly graduated theatre nurses working in an operating setting, with six to twelve months of working experience, were interviewed. The narrative data was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results: Being a newly graduated theatre nurse with lack of previous working experience created mixed feelings about the profession and the role. The experiences were characterized a satisfaction in learning and developing skills but at the same time experiencing feelings of being overcome by work burden. The challenges they encountered were entering the role of an operation theatre nurse, allowing one self to gain competence and accepting the situation of being a novice. Adjusting to the situation by adopting different strategies became a way of coping with the experienced challenges. Conclusion: Gaining access to the role of becoming a competent theatre nurse can be supported by acknowledging the challenges experienced by newly graduated theatre nurses and by mentoring their progress to prevent negative feelings such as insecurity and stress.

Full textThe surgical safety checklist was developed by the World health organization (WHO) to reduce the risk of surgical complications and death. The communication in the operating room needs to be improved between all categories of the staff so that the safety measures will be consistently and correctly performed. The target with hospital care is to promote a high patient safety to minimize the share of care related injuries. In the spite of WHO´s checklist has shown positive result there are indications that compliance decreases and it is also met with resistance from the hospital staff. The purpose of this study would like to illustrate the theater nurses experience about the application of WHO´s checklist. Four theater nurses where interviewed and the result was analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The process of the analysis resulted in three categories: safety of the care process, development and compliance. The result showed how the application of WHO´s checklist promotes safety for the patient in the close contact and in the theatre nurse independent occupation. The need of development to meet the changing surgical field was another aspect. The importance of compliance where described by the theatre nurse to achieve the best outcome of WHO´s checklist for safe surgery. A consistent implementation of WHO´s surgical safety checklist lead to increased patient safety.

Full textIntroduction: Nursing is the main area for the operating room (OR) nurse. The OR nurse will prevent injuries and complications that can occur during surgery. One such complication can be compartment syndrome. Compartment syndrome is a rare complication but can lead to serious injuries. It is therefore important that the OR nurse take this in consideration in their work. Aim: This essay aims to highlight the OR nurse's experiences of working with the prevention of compartment syndrome in the perioperative nursing. Method: A qualitative approach was applied and the data were collected through interviews. Collected data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The essay enrolled 11 OR nurses, ten women and one man, who worked in four different surgical wards at two different hospitals. Result: After a qualitative content analysis of the data were conducted two categories emerged, Preventive work and To act on uncertain foundations. The first category described how the OR nurse undertook an individual risk assessment, was accurate in positioning and performed a change in position and massage of the patient’s leg to prevent compartment syndrome. The second category, To act on uncertain foundations, described an uncertainty in the perioperative care regarding compartment syndrome. It highlighted an uncertainty around the topic, nursing interventions were questioned and a lack of scientific evidence emerged. Conclusion: There were a lack of guidelines and recommendations regarding care about compartment syndrome. There was also a lack of implementing new knowledge in nursing to provide an evidence-based practice.

Full textBackground:During the past years, there have been investments to make the elective healthcare more effective (Fast-track). The hospital stay after a knee replacement (TKA) is today just a few days. Studies indicate that there is a concern among patients to be discharged too early. There are also studies that shows that the theatre nurse through perioperative care can lay the foundation for an effective rehabilitation of the patient after surgery. This study focuses on the patients experience of a TKA surgery and throughout the care process based on the short hospital stay.Purpose:The purpose with this study was to describe the patient`s experience of undergoing a TKA surgery and the short hospitalization.Method:An interview study was made with ten patients who have undergone a TKA-operation from a strategic selection. The patient`s pain was evaluated with VAS scale. The interviews were recorded, transcribedverbatim and analysed using qualitative content analysis.Outcome:Six subcategories which in turn created three categories emerged; information, treatment and symptom relief. All the patients were very satisfied with the experience of the care process. The treatment and information given from the medical staff was part of what made the patient satisfied. VAS estimation showed that patients scored high pain. Conclusion:The patient ́s experience of undergoing a TKA surgery and the short hospitalization was seen as positive. Despite the positive result further research from a larger number of patients to get a more generalizable result of the patient ́s experiences from TKA and the short hospitalization is advocated. Theatre nurses ́ participation in theperioperative healthcare can advantageously be discussed at the current hospital.

Full textNational Board of Health and Welfare describes an upcoming shortage of perioperative nurses in Sweden, and statistics show that the number of nurses applying to specialized training in the perioperative field is declining. In the literature, the perioperative nursing profession is described as non-visible to people in general, and that may be a reason for the lack of interest in choosing the profession. The purpose of this pilot study is to describe nursesʹ perceptions of the perioperative nursing profession. The study was conducted using qualitative inductive approach as an interview with open entry question. Data was analyzed by manifest content analysis. The results revealed three categories; Invisible and low valued, Member of the team and Practical work. The result is consistent with prior research conducted. A larger study is of value to obtain a deeper understanding of differences in perceptions. Knowledge of these perceptions may facilitate the recruitment of perioperative nurses. Specialized competence at the surgical departments increases the chances for patients to receive a safe perioperative care.
