Abstract:
The Troodos ophiolite is a type example of ophiolite and has been studied for more than 50 years. Albeit numerous findings have been derived from previous investigations, some questions about the details of its formation processes are still outstanding. One of them concerns the origin of the pyroxenites in the mantle and the lower crustal section, and this is the main theme of this thesis. Integrated field, petrographical and geochemical work was conducted in this study. On the basis of distribution, the pyroxenites can be divided into two categories, crustal pyroxenites and mantle pyroxenite

Abstract:
Troodos Ophiolite is a remnant of Tethyan oceanic crust of Cretaceous age with well-preserved but complex extensional tectonics along its northern flank. Recent geological studies have provided improved models for the formation and extension environment of Troodos and its associated mineralisation. A geophysical program of seismic refraction, electromagnetic (MT-TEM) and potential field exploration has evaluated and developed aspects of these models. Analysis of aeromagnetic, satellite, and regional geophysical datasets suggests that the Solea and younger Larnaca ridge structures are comprised

Abstract:
Seafloor spreading at mid-ocean ridges is accommodated by a combination of magmatic accretion and tectonic stretching of the lithosphere. Recent investigations of mid-ocean ridges show evidence for large-offset normal faults or detachments that accommodate a significant portion of the plate separation. Once thought of as rarities along the global spreading system, detachment faults are now considered to play an integral role in seafloor spreading at slow- and ultra-slow-spreading ridges. Estimates of the proportion and extent of tectonic spreading however vary widely; some authors suggest as m

Gossans, the brightly coloured oxidation products of sulphide mineralised rocks, have acted as an exploration target for base and precious metals and sulphur for thousands of years. They are easily identified from remote sensing and field-based reconnaissance, and once found may be drilled to determine the character of mineralisation below. The number of targets drilled could potentially be reduced if gossans overlying significant mineralisation can be discriminated from their field relations, mineralogy and geochemistry. Many processes involved in the accretion of lower oceanic crust remain enigmatic. To investigate some of these processes, the principal focus of this study is drill core 'CY-4', an unbroken 2.2km long section through sheeted dykes and mafic and ultramafic cumulates of the Troodos ophiolite lower crust, Cyprus. The generally accepted hypothesis states CY-4 intersected an axial magma chamber that was intruded by an off-axis pluton, based on a 'stepped' increase in clinopyroxene titanium content at 1331 m depth. Abstract:
The massive Fe- and Cu-sulphide mineralisation is the most valuable economic resource in the Troodos and has been explored and exploited mainly through exploratory drilling around ancient slags, gossans and old workings. The exhaustion of these superficial guides has meant a shift to locating orebodies at depth. Direct detection of orebodies by traditional geophysical methods has been difficult. Structures parallel and perpendicular to the spreading axes in the region are thought to control the localisation of the sulphide deposits. Practical and financial constraints associated with traditional field-based mapping are often responsible for the production of coarse-scale geological maps that lack detail and have inaccurately defined lithological contacts.
