Neonates born to mothers with an active gonorrhoea infection can develop serious sight threatening eye infections. The causative agent, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is passed to the neonate during birth, and infects the eyes of the neonate. The condition, ophthalmia neonatorum, develops 0-14 days after birth and initially presents as a painful inflammation of the eye with yellowish purulent discharge from one or both eyes. One preventative action used by some countries is the use of an ophthalmic prophylaxis which is usually an ophthalmic ointment which contains an antibiotic. This its self can caus

HIV-infected individuals are at increased risk of age-related non-AIDS morbidity and mortality compared with HIV-uninfected persons. It is speculated that HIV-infected individuals may not only be aging chronologically, but also undergoing accelerated biological aging. This is supported by clinical reports of conditions classically associated with the normal aging process appearing at an earlier age in HIV-infected persons compared to age-matched controls. Chronological age is an imprecise measure of biological aging due to inter-individual differences in rates of aging and therefore ‘biomarker

The purpose of the study was to assess the level of knowledge about glaucoma among the patients who attend the CBN staff eye clinic in Abuja. An exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on adult CBN staff members and their eligible dependants. Data on demographics and knowledge of glaucoma were collected using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. One hundred and forty five respondents (100% return) participated in the study. Purposive sampling was done to recruit respondents. Of the total respondents’, 74.5% (n=108) claimed they had heard about glaucoma but only 14.5%

The utilization of in vitro tests with a tiered testing strategy for detection of mild ocular irritants can reduce the use of animals for testing, provide mechanistic data on toxic effects, and reduce the uncertainty associated with dose selection for clinical trials. The first section of this thesis describes how in vitro methods can be used to improve the prediction of the toxicity of chemicals and ophthalmic products. The proper utilization of in vitro methods can accurately predict toxic threshold levels and reduce animal use in product development. Sections two, three and four describe t

An important function of vision is to provide us with sensory information to efficiently perform tasks - especially occupational-type tasks. In the research laboratory and the clinic we often measure and quantify various aspects of the visual sense such as visual acuity, stereoacuity, contrast sensitivity, amplitude of accommodation, etc. These and many other measures of visual performance each has an effect upon the performance of occupational-type tasks.

Abstract A multi-functional self-examination ophthalmic device for remote eye examinations has been studied in this paper. The device integrates two standard ophthalmic examinations: slit-lamp and visual acuity. Testing of the device has been performed in a preliminary clinical study. The results show good and comparable images to those of conventional instruments routinely used in ophthalmic clinics. The device can be used in a myriad of remote settings including home monitoring.
