Abstract:
Public opinion and religious opinion are located within plural societies, connected to social networks. The experience of the phenomenon of public opinion by the believers interacts with the experience of religious opinions. What are the mediations employed by the sensus fidelium to explain the contradictions between public and religious opinion? This article discusses the proximity between public and religious opinions through the categories of publicity, contradiction, utility and truth. In networked societies, the faithful exercise the right to express their opinions and religious convictions. The phenomenon of the sensus fidelium immediately evidences the experience of faith of the believers as subjective convictions and religious opinions. Afterwards, these opinions are mediated by the collegiate spheres of the Church, expressing the coherence of the belief, that is, its truth. The proximity between public and religious opinions points to more complex scenarios for the Church and the believers.

Abstract:
This research aims to investigate teacher-proposed classroom activities involving argumentative genres and analyze the extent up to which the preparation of those activities contribute to the writing of opinion articles of 9th-graders of a public school run by São Paulo state. Based on the National Curriculum Parameters and on the Curriculum of the State of São Paulo, language was embraced as the study object of the discipline Portuguese, along with the conceptions of discourse genres by Bakhtin (2003), Marcuschi (2008), and Rojo (2000). Regarding the organization of the pedagogical work, a didactic sequence based on Schneuwly and Dolzs (2004) guidelines was planned aiming at the writing of an opinion article. The external Evaluations of Learning in Process in the first and in the second semesters were taken respectively as initial and final production. The activities in the didactic-pedagogical materials were selected when in keeping with the reflections on the characteristics of the genre opinion article proposed by Rodrigues (2000), Brakling (2000), among others. As to the teaching strategies of written production, the research resorted to the works of Antunes (2003) and Geraldi (1991), making evident the planning and preparation stages of the written production. The analysis of the productions, from an enunciative and interactional perspective of language, sought to reveal the linguistic-discursive strategies used by students in the construction of argumentation. In order to better understand the use of those strategies, Aristotles Rhetoric was resorted to, as well as the New Rhetoric, by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (1996). The results of the research suggest that there is a direct relation between the theoretical choices for the organization of the pedagogical work and the improvement observed in student writing. The teaching of argumentative genres proved relevant, as student-authors were able to take a critical stand towards the topics of the written assignments. Improvements were observed regarding text organization and productivity an effect of the reading and topic-related activities; on the other hand, the weak points of the specific activities for genre construction, alongside the problems related to the suggested plans, point to the reorientation of the work with opinion articles.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with matters related to the teaching of opinion articles in the 9th grade of Elementary Schools. It aims at recognizing and rendering explicit the way in which students are oriented with regard to the learning of this genre and the results that can be obtained from students articles. In order to achieve such a goal, the Official Portuguese Curriculum, which is followed by the schools run by the State Government of São Paulo, was analyzed, and the activities proposed in the Caderno do Aluno (Students Booklet) that intend to enable students to write opinion articles were described and analyzed. The structure and strategic uses of Portuguese in texts written by students were also examined. The theoretical basis for the research was Bakhtins (2011[1959-61]) definition of text and discourse genre, which conceives of language as a set of socio-interactional practices carried out by historical subjects and sees genres as elements that are fundamental to human communication. Kochs (2012; 2013; 2014) works were also used in order to account for the teaching of oral production. With regard to argumentation, concepts and procedures that are necessary for the production of argumentative texts, the research resorted to the theoretical assumptions of the New Rhetoric, developed by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005[1958]), as well as to studies by Amossy (2011), Aquino (1997) and Koch (2011), which deal with argumentative strategies and criteria for the analysis of argumentative texts. The results obtained suggest that there is a gap between what is prescribed by the Portuguese Curriculum and the activities aiming at the learning of opinion articles that are proposed to students. It was observed that the Learning Situations which were analyzed do not contribute to the meaningful learning of the genre, since the practices do not allow students to experience argumentative writing as a meaningful social practice. As far as the analysis of texts written by students is concerned, it is noticeable that although pupils are able to take stands in relation to the controversial issues they are put in contact with, they have difficulty both in structuring their texts and in employing linguistic and discursive factors that contribute to the construction of textual coherence.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to analyze the opinion upon articles produced by senior elementary school students from a state school in São Paulo, Brazil. It focuses on a point of view regarding the theme \"The Impeachment of Dilma Rousseff \" in which the dialogic relations were established by different voices found in speeches shown in the printed and digital media, between April and May 2016. The central theoretical framework is based on the concepts set by M. Bakhtin and the Circle such as the sphere of circulation\", \"utterance\", \"quoted speech\" as well as on the ideological perspective of Brian Street literacy studies. The opinion article as discourse gender is prescribed in the Brazilian National Curricular Parametres (PCNs) as an argumentative text to be taught in the practices of reading and writing production. This research displayed a didactic dialogic proposal to four 9th grade groups which was divided in three different moments: the reading of the compilation, researches and discussion on the texts; text production (version 1); revision and text production (version 2). Considering the conception of writing as a process of responsive understanding 39 articles were selected based on two criteria: i) the quoted speech: paraphrase, the use of quotation marks and copy; ii) the expressive formulation in the titles. The analysis of the apprehension of the speeches on the collection considered the active engendering of the subjects in the production of meanings and the different readers of the article: classmates and the teacher. In the set of the opinion articles regarding the theme Dilma Rousseffs impeachment, four types of argument were identified: i) paraphrase; ii) the use of quotes in the mark of the others speech, iii) copy of excerpts from the compilation; iv) valuation positioning in the titles. The result of students production showed a diversity of positions in favour or against the polarized political situation between pros and cons about Dilmas impeachment. The argumentative resources recovered the tense and conflicting debates have taken place on the streets and in the Brazilian National Congress. And they showed different understandings of the same information, signaling that the writing project is not detached from the socio-historical contexts of literacy practices of students, but reflect and refract the source texts. Understanding each text as a response to the others speech is the dialogic activity proposed: a work on the political speech in the Portuguese class.

Based on that foundations, this dissertation presents activities organized in a pedagogical sequence (PS) in which its purpose is developing abilities by using productive and efficient anaphoric reference mechanisms in Middle school students. In order to achieve that, the objectives are: a) propose activities that are related to referencing, more specific anaphoric reference; b) reflect on to what extent the acquisition of anaphoric reference mechanisms by the students, especially related to the anaphoric reference, favor the writing development; c) suggest activities concerning text production in order to achieve efficient manners of anaphoric reference mechanisms responsible for maintenance and for progression of referencing in the text. As to theoretical support, fundamentally, to reference, in a sociocognitive interactional perspective, according to Mondada and Dubois (2005), Cavalcante (2011), Cavalcante, Brito and Custódio Filho (2014), and, as to pedagogial sequence, to Dolz, Noverraz e Schneuwly (2004). Conceived to apply to 9th grade students in public school in Fortaleza, the PS proposed aims at raising awareness about the maintenance mechanisms and theme progression, specifically in a argumentative text, the opinion article. It is believed that the PS give a more conscious and productive use of anaphoric reference mechanisms and the perception that the referents are established between the interlocutors in a shared perspective because it is in the interaction process that the ideas are constructed and reconstructed.

The theory is based on the assumptions of Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG), developed by Hengeveld and Mackenzie (2008), that basic unit of analysis is the Discourse Act. For the definition and description of the discourse functions of the encapsulated apposition, we take as support the researches of Quirk et al (1985), Meyer (1992), Nogueira (1999, 2012), Decat (2010) e Hannay; Keizer (2005). Methodologically, the research presents a description course that starts from the formal characteristics, frequency analysis with the use of the SPSS program for a design of the prototypical behavior of this structure and, finally, presents a qualitative analysis of the discourse functions of the structures in question based on a corpus composed by 108 occurrences from articles of opinion published in Folha de São Paulo between 2006 to 2010. In the analysis, we chose to describe the encapsulated apposition as the relative headless or non - nucleated such as proposed by FDG and to determine the attributive feature of this structure. The most frequent structure is composed of demonstrative pronouns + restrictive adjective clause, encapsulating State – of - assairs. The discourse functions assumed by these structures were defined based on the na ture of the information they add to the textual flow. Thus, we define the following basic functions: Evaluation, Explanation, Developing, Evidencing / Confirming , Conclusion.
Assim, definimos as seguintes funções básicas: Avaliação, Explicação, Desdobramento, Constatação/Ratificação, Conclusão.

Working with literacy practices in a ninth grade class and build a literacy event, in which the opinion article discursive genre was produced by students, shows that the elementary school student knows how to argue and defend his thesis and it show that ability to write argumentative texts must not only be addressed and developed in high school. We work with the concept of literacy based on Street (2014), Soares (2014), Magalhães (2012) Kleiman (1995; 2007; 2008). When we talk about the argument types present in argumentative texts and about argumentation, we rely on Fiorin (2015) Cavalcante (2016) and Gonzaga (2016). It is known that there are difficulties among the elementary school students in building argumentative texts, because this genre requires thesis construction, supported and legitimized by arguments and counterarguments, plus a coherent conclusion. Teachers seek to form the students for meaningful writing, thus the production of the opinion piece is an important vehicle of argumentation, refutation and point of view defense. With the theme School Literacy Practices, we aim, in this work, to bridge the gap between literacy and production of the opinion article discursive genre as a learning tool that teachers of elementary school can use and transmit didactically. We use a qualitative approach (FLICK, 2009) in this study, which was attended by 18 students from the ninth grade of a public school, who worked with the structure of the discursive genre opinion article. After preparation, the students wrote their own opinion pieces in Standard Portuguese language, on the theme "Teenager pregnancy: causes and consequences". The analysis categories of texts produced by students were: a) differentiation of the theme from the thesis; b) development of the thesis; c) argument types. Before the intervention, only 10 students had differentiated the theme from the thesis; after the intervention, 17 had differentiated and developed the thesis. There was the use of various types of argument to defense the central idea of the producers of the texts in the first and last text production. This work contributes to the debate about school literacy through practices of literacy (Street, 2012), since the ultimate goal of the Portuguese language teaching is to enlarge the ability to use reading and writing as social practices.

As a result and based on the fact that the oral modality is acquired before the written modality, it is not surprising that several features of the oral text end up permeating the written text, marking it with oral nuances. The author shares his opinion that the concept of creativity belongs to the fundamental concepts of philosophy, psychology, literature, art, pedagogy. Creativity is one of the important concepts of the theory of journalism. The author does not agree with the extended definition of creativity. He believes that journalistic activity becomes creativity when it is free and associated with the creation and establishment of new national and universal values, with the highest intensity of intellectual and moral strength of the journalist, when journalism is a manifestation of civic position, when this activity combines professional skills and perfect literary form. The author also believes that literary skill and the skill of a journalist are not identical concepts, because literary skill is a component of journalistic skill.

Adegoke, Damilola, Natasha Chilambo, Adeoti Dipeolu, Ibrahim Machina, Ade Obafemi-Olopade, and Dolapo Yusuf. Public discourses and Engagement on Governance of Covid-19 in Ekiti State, Nigeria. African Leadership Center, King's College London, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.47697/lab.202101.

Full text
Abstract:
Numerous studies have emerged so far on Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) across different disciplines. There is virtually no facet of human experience and relationships that have not been studied. In Nigeria, these studies include knowledge and attitude, risk perception, public perception of Covid-19 management, e-learning, palliatives, precautionary behaviours etc.,, Studies have also been carried out on public framing of Covid-19 discourses in Nigeria; these have explored both offline and online messaging and issues from the perspectives of citizens towards government’s policy responses such as palliative distributions, social distancing and lockdown. The investigators of these thematic concerns deployed different methodological tools in their studies. These tools include policy evaluations, content analysis, sentiment analysis, discourse analysis, survey questionnaires, focus group discussions, in depth-interviews as well as machine learning., These studies nearly always focus on the national government policy response, with little or no focus on the constituent states. In many of the studies, the researchers work with newspaper articles for analysis of public opinions while others use social media generated contents such as tweets) as sources for analysis of sentiments and opinions. Although there are others who rely on the use of survey questionnaires and other tools outlined above; the limitations of these approaches necessitated the research plan adopted by this study. Most of the social media users in Nigeria are domiciled in cities and their demography comprises the middle class (socio-economic) who are more likely to be literate with access to internet technologies. Hence, the opinions of a majority of the population who are most likely rural dwellers with limited access to internet technologies are very often excluded. This is not in any way to disparage social media content analysis findings; because the opinions expressed by opinion leaders usually represent the larger subset of opinions prevalent in the society. Analysing public perception using questionnaires is also fraught with its challenges, as well as reliance on newspaper articles. A lot of the newspapers and news media organisations in Nigeria are politically hinged; some of them have active politicians and their associates as their proprietors. Getting unbiased opinions from these sources might be difficult. The news articles are also most likely to reflect and amplify official positions through press releases and interviews which usually privilege elite actors. These gaps motivated this collaboration between Ekiti State Government and the African Leadership Centre at King’s College London to embark on research that will primarily assess public perceptions of government leadership response to Covid-19 in Ekiti State. The timeframe of the study covers the first phase of the pandemic in Ekiti State (March/April to August 2020).

Abstract:
The article explores the key vocabulary of 2020 in the network space of Ukraine. Texts of journalistic, official-business style, analytical publications of well-known journalists on current topics are analyzed. Extralinguistic factors of new word formation, their adaptation to the sphere of special and socio-political vocabulary of the Ukrainian language are determined. Examples show modern impressions in the media, their stylistic use and impact on public opinion in a pandemic. New meanings of foreign expressions, media terminology, peculiarities of translation of neologisms from English into Ukrainian have been clarified. According to the materials of the online media, a «dictionary of the coronavirus era» is provided. The journalistic text functions in the media on the basis of logical judgments, credible arguments, impressive language. Its purpose is to show the socio-political problem, to sharpen its significance for society and to propose solutions through convincing considerations. Most researchers emphasize the influential role of journalistic style, which through the media shapes public opinion on issues of politics, economics, education, health care, war, the future of the country. To cover such a wide range of topics, socio-political vocabulary is used first of all – neutral and emotionally-evaluative, rhetorical questions and imperatives, special terminology, foreign words. There is an ongoing discussion in online publications about the use of the new foreign token «lockdown» instead of the word «quarantine», which has long been learned in the Ukrainian language. Research on this topic has shown that at the initial stage of the pandemic, the word «lockdown» prevailed in the colloquial language of politicians, media personalities and part of society did not quite understand its meaning. Lockdown, in its current interpretation, is a restrictive measure to protect people from a dangerous virus that has spread to many countries; isolation of the population («stay in place») in case of risk of spreading Covid-19. In English, US citizens are told what a lockdown is: «A lockdown is a restriction policy for people or communities to stay where they are, usually due to specific risks to themselves or to others if they can move and interact freely. The term «stay-at-home» or «shelter-in-place» is often used for lockdowns that affect an area, rather than specific locations». Content analysis of online texts leads to the conclusion that in 2020 a special vocabulary was actively functioning, with the appropriate definitions, which the media described as a «dictionary of coronavirus vocabulary». Media broadcasting is the deepest and pulsating source of creative texts with new meanings, phrases, expressiveness. The influential power of the word finds its unconditional embodiment in the media. Journalists, bloggers, experts, politicians, analyzing current events, produce concepts of a new reality. The world is changing and the language of the media is responding to these changes. It manifests itself most vividly and emotionally in the network sphere, in various genres and styles.

Khomenko, Tetiana. TIME AND SPACE OF HISTORICAL PARALLELS OF EUGEN SVERSTIUK’S JOURNALISM. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11095.

Full text
Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the investigation of time-space measurements of journalistic works of Eugen Sverstiuk, a well-known Ukrainian journalist. In particular, the time-space continuum of his works is being discussed, which is characterized as comprehensive, continuous, filled with archetypical images which metaphorize the text, but at the same time structure it, and are beaded on the axis of time and documentarily located in the space. The logics of images initiated in the text is exaggerated by constant dwelling of the author in the time-space dimensions of the epoque, of which he was a contemporary, as well as precise knowledge of World and Ukrainian history and culture. Historical parallelism of journalism of E. Sverstiuk possesses double potential. On the one hand, the author provides arguments for confirmation of his own opinion, and on the other, he shows us historical collisions in the new aspect, which helps consider the past, better understand the present, and think of the future. Pages of his works is space for author’s considerations, which logics impresses by free transgression of the author in the time, and his ability to grasp the most essential, although sometimes precedent, sometimes sudden and forgotten, or even unknown historical facts in order to force them to resonate in the new historical realities, first of all to indicate the importance of national and the need for assigning to it more significance. Using retrospectives, E. Sverstiuk encourages us to return to the national sources and to seek in ourselves the reflections of nationality in order to return historical truth to our audience. This is what, according to E. Sverstiuk, was believed to be one of the most necessary conditions of existence to the independent state. Time-space continuum of E. Sverstiuk’s journalism is reproduction of comprehensive history as continuous process of the development of humanity, and of formation of comprehensive, total, and so to say epic reading and understanding of these processes via accentuation of reader’s attention on key events, phenomena, and facts.

Today we are witnessing the rapid development of technologies that help journalists become better, and the creators of media content to work more quickly and ensure the completeness of the information. With the help of Internet communication, new ways of disseminating information have appeared in journalism. Journalists more often create their blogs on various platforms. Blogosphere video content has become very popular among the Ukrainian audience on YouTube because today the video format is the most effective in terms of communication. The YouTube social network partially replaces television, and the variety of thematic content is ably adapted to a wide audience. The paper analyzes Ukrainian blogs managed by journalists, where they publish different content formats. Therefore, the presentation of various examples of video blogs in our work helps to understand the specifics of Ukrainian blogging at its current stage of development. After all, videos of popular people such as Michael Shchur, Yanina Sokolova, Ostap Drozdov demonstrate the peculiarities of Ukrainian popular video content. For the research, we chose those blogs that are currently relevant to Ukrainian YouTube and have their specifics and uniqueness. The main objective of a blogger is to react quickly to the flow of information because the rating of the channel being monetized depends on it. With the help of statistical data, we can conclude that the Ukrainian audience is interested in a wide range of different information. Viewers now value the independent opinion of bloggers and more often listen to it. Every important event is covered by bloggers promptly. And the format in which it is presented depends on the individual style of the author and the concept of his channel. Levantovych, Oksana. COVID 19 MEDIA COVERAGE: AN ANALYSIS OF HEORHII POCHEPTSOV’S VIEW. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11061.

Full text
Abstract:
The article analyses the peculiarities of the coverage of the covid pandemic in the Ukrainian media, the emphasis placed by the media in news, and how the online mode of modern life and social distancing affects the growth of media influence. Special attention is paid to the view of the famous publicist Heorhii Pocheptsov, who does not exclude the possibility that the coronavirus was invented intentionally to control millions of people around the world. Permanently, the world faces numerous challenges of different scales: economic, military, socio-political, environmental, epidemiological ones. In 2020, the largest and the most unexpected event, undoubtedly, was the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which spread from the small Chinese province of Wuhan to the whole world and already took more than one million people’s lives in less than a year. Thus, the media, that in the post-information society actually have an unprecedented impact on people, form a person’s perception of such challenges. As a result, our understanding of the pandemic is directly related to the information we consume from the media. In fact, from the very start of quarantine, the media space began to be captured by analytical materials in which experts from various fields tried to predict what the world would be like after the end of coronavirus. These experts were of two types: some claimed that irreversible changes would deepen the permanent economic and socio-political crisis, and by claiming that they intensified panic, while others argued that any crisis is a chance to restart and grow. The experts put different emphases covering the covid pandemic in the media, but it is important to pay attention to the analysis of the famous publicist, propaganda researcher – Heorhii Pocheptsov, who sees the coronavirus as a tool to influence millions of people. The pandemic will end sooner or later, but no matter whether the virus was artificially invented or not, the processes that have already been launched around the world cannot stop as if nothing had happened. But Heorhii Pocheptsov’s opinion about the possible artificial nature of the virus should make us more vigilant while consuming information from TVs or from the online media, as it is possible that this information might be a part of a great game that we were not warned about.

Abstract:
This fortnightly Covid-19 (C19), Conflict, and Governance Evidence Summary aims to signpost the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and other UK government departments to the latest evidence and opinions on C19, to inform and support their responses. Based on the feedback given in a recent survey, and analysis by the Xcept project, this summary is now focussing more on C19 policy responses. This summary features resources on: how youth empowerment programmes have reduced violence against girls during C19 (in Bolivia); why we need to embrace incertitude in disease preparedness responses; and how Latin American countries have been addressing widening gender inequality during C19. It also includes papers on other important themes: the role of female leadership during C19; and understanding policy responses in Africa to C19 The summary uses two main sections – (1) literature: – this includes policy papers, academic articles, and long-form articles that go deeper than the typical blog; and (2) blogs & news articles. It is the result of one day of work, and is thus indicative but not comprehensive of all issues or publications.
