Chroust, L. "Quality selection in young oak stands." Journal of Forest Science 53, No. 5 (January 7, 2008): 210–21. http://dx.doi.org/10.17221/2174-jfs.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper deals with an experiment that was established at Opočno Experimental Station of the Forest and Game Management Research Institute (CR) in an oak small pole stage in 1952 to test whether Schaedelin’’s (1942) tending method worked out for beech stands is suitable for oak stands. Development and growth of the oak stand without tending are analysed, and the influence of repeated positive selection and of definitive selection of target trees on the oak stand is described. The result of the 50-year experiment is that Schaedelin’s tending method is suitable also for oak stands. However, it is rational only if the choice of candidates from the small pole stage is focused on vital straight trees.

Abstract:
Mechanized windrowing in the top region of the Orlické hory Mts. has disturbed hundreds of hectares of immission clearcuts during eighties. The soil surface on the Velká Deštná Mountain was disturbed in 1987. One year later the Forest Research Station at Opočno established on this place the long-term research plot. Degree and extent of soil surface disturbance were recorded. Besides other experiments, the experimental Norway spruce plantation was established on three strips: control strip, strip treated by fertilizers or limestone (1991), and strip ameliorated byAlnus viridisplantation (1992). The effect of site degradation by mechanized windrowing has been indicated by young spruce growth for a long time period. The assessment of 17 years old spruce growth on the control strip shows significantly greater height increment on negligibly disturbed sites comparing to that on remarkably and very remarkably disturbed sites. Amelioration of spruce trees brings perspective outcomes on the strip biologically amended byAlnus viridis. High atmospheric depositions especially of nitrogen compounds, fungal disease by Ascocalyx abietina, climatic fluctuations, and high values of groundlevel ozone have brought new problems into spruce plantation performance since 1999. Nevertheless, it has been more substantially reduced by green alder.

Abstract:
In 1986 (1987) research plots were established in a forest stands on the south-western slope of Šerlich Mt., Orlické hory Mts. (Kristina Colloredo-Mansfeld – Forest Administration Opočno), at the altitude of 950 to 970 m, to study deposition, chemistry of precipitation and soil water and development of soil chemistry. The plots were established on a clear-cut area, in a young stand and a mature stand of spruce, in a mature beech stand, and in an advanced growth of spruce and European mountain ash. The content of solutes in creek water was studied at the same time. Since 1993 the concentration of substances in precipitation water intercepted in the summit part of Šerlich Mt. has been measured. Research on water chemistry in the stands terminated in 1997. Soil analyses were done in 1986 (1987), 1993 and 1999. The load of acid air pollutants in these forest ecosystems was high in the eighties. After 1991 the deposition of H+, S/SO42–, N/NO3– + NH4+, Mn, Zn, Al decreased. Similarly, an increase in pH was observed in soil water, and the concentrations of SO42–, and N, Al compounds decreased. But in 1993 the concentrations of SO42– and Al increased again under the spruce stand for several months. The concentrations of NO3–, Mn, Zn and Al in the stream water also gradually decreased in the nineties. On the contrary, the average values of S-ions increased compared to those of 1987 to 1991. Strongly acid soil reaction developed in deeper layers until 1993. In the second half of the nineties the pH/H2O value somewhat increased again, however the reserve of K, Mg, Ca available cations in the mineral soil constantly decreased. The saturation of sorption complex by basic cations in the lower layer of rhizosphere did not reach even 10% in 1999. The forest ecosystems of Šerlich Mt. were also loaded by a high fall-out of Pb, and increased fall-out of Cu. The lack of balance of N-compound transformations and consumption in the soil and increased leaching of N in the form of nitrates contribute to soil acidification on the investigated plots.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In Europe, short city breaks are popular. Tourism is characterized by shorter and more frequent trips, spaced throughout the year, lower spending per tourist and making use of low cost airlines. We witnessed a democratization of the use of air transport, traveling who cannot afford this activity in the past and increasing travel the frequency of those who have travelled. This change in travel habits affect the travel industry and hospitality. Oporto is currently one of Europe’s tourist destinations with the highest growth, which is due mainly to increased demand from tourists for city breaks. Recognition is generally as shown in the Lonely Planet magazine that indicated Oporto as the fourth best European destination in 2012. The city of Oporto was considered the best European destination of 2017 by the site “European Best Destinations”. Oporto Airport is located only 11 km from the city center. It is the second airport in the country in passenger traffic, only surpassed by Lisbon. Low-cost airlines reduce the annual seasonality of tourist demand in the region. More tourists directly and indirectly stimulate activity, particularly by generating spillovers and other positive externalities. The internet has exploded with a plethora of online sites that directly sell travel and tourism services and products to consumers. ‘Millennials’ are a large market segment who apparently have special characteristics such as the desire for authentic cultural experiences and who use technology intensively. The objective of this work is to answer a set of questions related with young people of the Oporto region in their travels. Do they travel more often? How do they behave as tourists? Do they take advantage of a low cost carriers hub? Do they also travel in off-peak periods? The data collection method for the study was the questionnaire inquiry. The inquiry contained 22 questions, the majority of them of multiple choice. 140 valid surveys were randomly collected. The presence of a low cost carrier hub has as a consequence that young people from Oporto are traveling and using the plane. The Internet is the favourite method for organizing the trip. The type of tourism preferred are sun and sea and cultural tourism. Increased seasonality in people traveling with friends than in the case of family travel. Positive correlations for airplane and heritage. Positive correlation for airplane and travel in the winter.

Abstract:
The local press is hardly ever used for dialectological studies. Press texts from the Kielce monthly “Przemiany”; 1970–1989 can be a valuable source of language material for both the study of the language system of the Opoczno dialect and the dialect lexicon. They are represented by 26 chats from the Opoczno area and Opoczno proverbs. For the purpose of this article, I have extracted dialect vocabulary – 61 words from chats – and compared them with dictionary materials from other sources of Polish dialect lexicography: a collection of K. Dejna’s folk vocabulary, Słownik gwar małopolskich (Glossary of Little Poland dialects), Słownik gwary opoczyńskiej (Glossary of Opoczno dialects), the alphabetical index of words from the dictionary Słownik polskich gwar (Dictionary of Polish dialects). The research results show differences in the resources of this lexicon in the sources listed. They confirm the usefullness of press materials for lexicographic research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper sets out to establish a methodology for measuring the colour of Port wines that complies with both the EU Regulation and the Office Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV) guidelines using the simplest possible approach. Fifty six Port wines of various types have been utilized, namely Brancos, Aloirados, Tintos and Retintos. In order to determine the influence of the spec tral interval on the results, the colour coordinates have been calculated using spectral measure ments every 1, 5 and 10 nm. The colour differences between them were lower than 0.5 CIELAB units and, therefore the use of a spectral interval of 10 nm is sufficient, as the CIE recommends. Absorbance spectra were recorded with 2, 5 and 10 nm pathlength cells to test the validity of Beer's law for Port Wines. In general, they comply quite well with that law, but some precision problems arise in the measurements, in relation to the pathlength of the cell. We conclude that the best measurements are obtained with 2 mm pathlength cells for Tintos and Retintos Port wines, and with 10 mm pathlength cells for Aloirados and Brancos Port wines.

Abstract:

Abstract:
SUMMARYPortugal, a medium- to low-level endemic country (21·6 cases/100 000 population in 2012), has one of the highest European Union tuberculosis (TB) incidences. Although incidence is declining progressively, the country's heterogeneity in both regional endemics and their evolution suggests the importance of a better understanding of subnational epidemiology to customize TB control efforts. We aimed to update knowledge on municipality-years pulmonary TB incidence clustering, identify areas with different time trends, and show the potential of combining complementary clustering methods in control of infectious diseases. We used national surveillance municipality-level data (mainland Portugal, 2000–2010). Space–time clustering and spatial variation in temporal trends methods were applied. Space–time critical clusters identified (P < 0·001) were still the Lisbon and Oporto regions. The global incidence declined at a 5·81% mean annual percentage change, with high space–time heterogeneity and distinct time trend clusters (P < 0·001). Municipalities with incidences declining more rapidly belonged to critical areas. In particular, the Oporto trend cluster had a consistent −8·98% mean annual percentage change. Large space–time heterogeneities were identified, with critical incidences in the greater Lisbon and Oporto regions, but declining more rapidly in these regions. Oporto showed a consistent, steeper decrease and could represent a good example of local control strategy. Combining results from these approaches gives promise for prospects for infectious disease control and the design of more effective, focused interventions.

Abstract:
The subject matter of the article is the way in which the rural population of two regions, namely Kielce and Opoczno, sees their language. Field studies were conducted in 2018, involving mainly the oldest residents of the village of Lasocin, Kielce County (1993–1997 and later) and 40 villages in Opoczno County in 2018. The responses, recorded using a voice recorder, show that they treat dialect as a variety of language of a limited geographical range: mainly local (borders of one village, several neighbouring villages); regional (e.g. Silesia, Kaszuby, Kielce, Opoczno, Podhale, Kurpie and others), characteristic of the oldest generation. The dialect is also, in their opinion, a vital indicator of local identity, an essential element of community ties (cf. mówić po nasemu). The dialect in the consciousness of the speakers is distinguished by certain linguistic features from the phonetic subsystem, e.g. a narrowed vowel articulation a→o, e→i, y, articulation broadening i, y→e, e.g. piełka, bieł, beła, labialisation of the initial o, denasalisation of nasal vowels ą→o, ę→e, and lexis, e.g. kaj, źmioki, zaściegacka, podwyrze, plindze, nizinier.
