Khachikyan, Elena, and Oleg Pokhalenkov. "THE CONCEPT OF «ENEMY» IN THE NOVEL BY LION FEUCHTWANGER «THE OPPERMAN FAMILY»." Ivanovo state university bulletin. Series «The Humanities», no. 3 (October 1, 2020): 34–38. http://dx.doi.org/10.46726/h.2020.3.5.

Abstract:
In this article, on the example of the novel «the Opperman Family» by Lion Feuchtwanger, a possible analysis of the poetic world of a prose work is proposed by highlighting the frame structure of the concept «enemy». Referring to the categories of cognitive linguistics makes it possible not only to identify the features of the poetics of Feuchtwanger's novel, but also to understand the coming atmosphere of terror in Germany, the quintessence of which is the concept of «enemy» (it should be noted that the writer witnessed the birth of totalitarian ideology and therefore in the novel «the Opperman Family» he gave a complete picture of the Nazi regime). The paper will consider the main meanings of the concept: a «simple witness of the regime» and an «ideological enemy». The realization of the meaning of the concept «ideological enemy» occurs at the motive, figurative and associative levels of the text of the writer's novel. The study focuses not on the image of the head of the family, Gustav Opperman, who was outlawed by anti-Semitic politics, but on his son, young Bertold Opperman, and his encounter with anti — Semitic attitudes in the gymnasium where he studied. The misunderstanding and subsequent bullying that the young man experienced from Bernd Vogelsang (teacher of the Humanities) led to a tragic end

Abstract:
Opperman’s poetry is firmly rooted in reality. This theme is explored in the first part of the paper, showing that while the poet is committed to visual and historical facts together with data of experience, he is, as a poet constantly attempting in various ways to discover universal values in a visual reality which may be of transient importance. After drawing a distinction between the particular French school of symbolism (Simbolisme) of the last quarter of the 19th century and the more general idea of symbolism (simboliek) where objects and facts are invested with symbolic meaning, the second part of the paper is devoted to the various methods and techniques employed by the poet to “release the angel from the rock”, whereas the third part of the paper concentrates on various poems illustrating these methods while tracing the symbolic process.

Abstract:
Opperman does not only use his personal and cultural experiences to distil them Into poetry, but also uses news reports appearing in the daily press and which reflect everyday life around him. These news reports are used by Opperman as an intertextual framework on which to weave his own worl< of art. In this article the author traces how Opperman reworks journalistic prose through allusion, transposition and editing to become poetry It is also indicated that an intergame takes place between the news report and the socio-cultural topicality The perspective of the poem is shaped in the construction of the conflict situation touched upon by the press report, but which in the poem is woven in perspectivistically in both the composition of the poem and the figurative conception both of which then grow towards a culminating conclusion. In "Klara Majola" from Engel uit die klip, for example, the whole of the events builds up towards an identification with Klara Majola, so that her deed in the final two lines rises above the perspective with great dynamic force.

Abstract:
Aspects of the genetic process in the poetry of D.J. Opperman based on an analysis of different versions of the poem 'Gedagtes by ’n sarkofaag' (Thoughts on a sarcophagus) A study of the genesis of a literary text reveals the systematic changes effected by the author during the creative process, and an understanding of these creative tendencies foregrounds structural principles of the final text. In studying a larger corpus of the author’s work, scrutiny of text development affords the means to gain insight into stylistic, semantic and thematic characteristics of the author’s oeuvre. This article focuses on the genesis of D.J. Opperman’s poem “Gedagtes by ’n sarkofaag” within the theoretical framework of Dutch edition theory as represented by Dorleijn (1984), Mathijsen (1997) and De Bruijn (2000) in particular. The different phases of development in the genesis of “Gedagtes by ’n sarkofaag” are identified and represented in a synoptic apparatus. In the analysis of the textual development particular attention is paid to the creation of a symbolic level.

Abstract:
In this article the author examines a key convention of the love lyric, namely the 'realisation' of the beloved through poetic articulation, by which the illusion of a ‘unity of the spirit’ between the lovers is created. In this regard the Afrikaans love lyric in general, and the love poems of Opperman in particular, generate a secondary convention in terms of which the Genesis myth is transformed to a paradigm for the quest for spiritual unity as directly related to a "... collective yearning for a vanished time of happiness ..." (Turner, 1978:24), that is an idyllic pastoral existence before the advent of Afrikaner urbanization in the thirties and forties. In this regard the poet Totius’s Trekkerswee forms the ideological base for a perception of the city as a ‘grysland’ (literally 'grey country') in direct opposition to a perception of the farm as a 'paradise' in the sense that it represents a "vanished time of happiness" (Turner, 1978:24). Taking this paradigm as a point of departure, the author deconstructs a well-known Opperman poem, revealing its underlying ideological base, and presenting an interpretation which differs radically from the traditional.

Abstract:
The Constitutional Court in National Credit Regulator v Opperman confirmed the Cape High Court's decision in Opperman v Boonzaaier to declare section 89(5)(c) of the National Credit Act unconstitutional. Therefore, the forfeiture to the state of an unregistered creditor provider's right to claim restitution of monies advanced in terms of an unlawful (and void) credit agreement, was held to amount to an arbitrary deprivation of property in contravention of section 25(1) of the Constitution – the property clause. The provision in effect prohibited courts from deviating from the common law's strict par delictum rule in as far as the effects of unlawful contracts are concerned, the result being that creditors could not retrieve any of the amounts extended to the debtor, despite there being no turpitude or bad faith present. The purpose of this provision was to discourage the concluding of unlawful credit agreements – for instance, agreements concluded by unregistered credit providers – so as to protect consumers against unscrupulous behaviour. Although the broad purposes of the Act are undeniably valid, the Court held that there was no "sufficient reason" for the effects that the Act had in this case, since the credit provider in question was not guilty of the behaviour that the Act tried to combat. In other words, the effects of the Act were over-broad and not proportionate to its stated purposes. This case note comprehensively analyses these decisions in view of interpreting the "confused and confusing" wording of section 89(5)(c), with a specific focus on the application of the section 25(1) non-arbitrariness test. Reference is also made to the earlier judgments in the matter of Cherangani Trade and Investment 107 (Edms) Bpk v Mason. The Opperman decisions illustrate well how the non-arbitrariness test should be conducted in consitutional property cases generally but particularly also in the credit context. Of significance is the fact that the Court for the first time recognised that personal rights sounding in money (an enrichment claim in this instance) should qualify as "property" for constitutional property law purposes. In certain circumstances, therefore, credit regulation may involve deprivation of property such as must satisfy the requirements of the property clause. It is contended that recognising the role of section 25 in the credit context is a positive development that can be explored further. The constitutional provision also calls for lawmakers to draft legislation in such a way that regulatory mechanisms are rational and sufficiently proportionate to its stated goals.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to operationalise loyalty as a segmentation tool utilising both psychological and behavioural measures (as suggested by Backman, 1988), while recognising the vast differences between the types of loyalty possible by acknowledging the differences between first time visitors and actual ‘loyal’ visitors (as suggested by Opperman, 2000). Secondary purposes of the study included the identification of differences between the segments derived. The proposed framework identified an easy to utilise, and effective segmentation tool. It was also revealed that the proposed framework can be very useful for segmenting cruise passengers into distinct homogeneous groups. Specific managerial implications are discussed.

Abstract:
In an archival document playwright N.P. van Wyk Louw recognizes the influence of the American philosopher Josiah Royce (I855-I916) on his choral drama, Die dieper reg. Louw specifically attends to the explanation of Royce's concept of loyalty to loyalty - a concept which was initially used in The Philosophy of Loyalty (1908). Royce's concept has a direct bearing on the legal and ethical stance implied in the drama. The concept may also be related to the article "Die ewige trek", which Louw published in 1938. Literary critics such as Opperman, Van Rensburg and Olivier have directed their attention to the legal and ethical stance in Die dieper reg. However, until now, no attention has been paid to the influence Royce had on Die dieper reg. This article traces part of the influence Royce exerted on the work.

Abstract:
In this article an attempt is made to establish a framework within which one can define or describe Symbolism as a literary phenomenon. As is the case with most literary movements one cannot reach a final definition or conclusion on Symbolism because it has many manifestations in different countries with different literary artists - so many men, so many minds. It is, however, possible to identify some common trends in the works of many symbolist poets and prose-writers. These trends are outlined in this article. The following also serves as an introduction to a special issue of Literator on Symbolism and its occurrence in the literary works of D.J. Opperman, Totius, N.P. van Wyk Louw and other Afrikaans literary artists. This special issue forms part of a comprehensive investigation into the incidence of Symbolism in the Afrikaans literary tradition undertaken by the Departement Afrikaans-Nederlands of the PU for CHE under the supervision of prof. D.H. Steenberg and with financial assistance of the Human Sciences Research Council.

Abstract:
Evaluations of the poetry of C.M. van den Heever This article traces the assessments of the value of the poetic work by the Afrikaans author C.M. van den Heever since the second quarter of the twentieth century. Appreciation of him as poet mainly revolves around his role as transitional figure in the important renewal of Afrikaans poetry in the 1930s, as can be seen from two rather divergent critiques by D.J. Opperman (completed in 1946 and 1952, respectively). An outstanding contribution by Van den Heever in this regard is the introduction of elements of Dutch poetry from around the turn of the nineteenth century to the Afrikaans literary world. A critic such as T.T. Cloete, in an article dating from 1957, convincingly argues that aspects of Van den Heever’s poetic style and technique, which other critics had sometimes judged harshly, are largely functional in co-communicating the specific (passively transcendental) attitude towards life and reality conveyed in Van den Heever’s work. Local and international shifts in the dominant literary approaches, however, have caused singularly confessional poetry – such as the bulk of Van den Heever’s poetic output – to be increasingly marginalised since the mid- 1930s. In this respect he shares the fate of Dutch poet A. Roland Holst, whose poetry was influential in shaping the characteristics of Van den Heever’s.

Eur J Endocrinol 1994;130:402–9. ISSN 0804–4643 Mole-rats (Family Bathyergidae) have no obvious source of calciol. They live in an environment devoid of sunlight and consume a herbivorous diet. Calciol status, metabolism and expression were examined in six species of Bathyergids. Serum levels of calcidiol in all species were < 5μg/l and those of calcitriol were low (18.0 ± 11.0 (sd) ng/l, N = 57) when compared to other rodents. Within 72 h of injecting animals with tritium-labelled calciol, most of the labelled prohormone had been metabolized to more polar metabolites. Three times more tritium-labelled calcitriol (19.3 ± 2.9%) was present than (24R)-hydroxycalcidiol (6.2 ± 10%). The natural absence of detectable circulating concentrations of calcidiol and the threefold greater amount of calcitriol to (24R)-hydroxycalcidiol produced indicate that calciol naturally is in short supply. Calciol-dependent calbindins were absent in the duodenum. Calbindin-D28k was present in the Purkinje cells of the cerebellum and in some collecting ducts and proximal and distal convoluted tubules of the kidney. Calbindin-D9k also was present but was localized uniquely in the juxtaglomerular cells of the five southern African species. These data confirm that Bathyergid mole-rats naturally have an impoverished calciol status. Despite the presence of calbindins in renal tissues, the functional importance of this hormone in calbindin synthesis and other normal mole-rat physiology is not known. Abstract:
The essay argues that the atomic bombing of Hiroshima cannot be told without taking into account and recognising the diverse entanglements of matter that were (and still are) involved in this historic event. In order to analyse the multiple meanings connected to the bombing, the essay draws on Serenella Iovino and Serpil Opperman’s theory of “material ecocriticism”, which deals with the way in which various material forms interact with the human or social dimension, constantly producing configurations of meanings and discourses. Consequently, the essay points out that memory of Hiroshima is a prime example for the interplay of material-discursive relations, which do not allow for the coherent storytelling of this past event, but for an ever-changing fragmentation and (re)negotiation of meaning. This latter aspect is extensively dealt with in the analysis of John Hersey’s 1946 newspaper article “Hiroshima” and Alain Resnais’s 1959 film “Hiroshima Mon Amour”, based on a screenplay by Marguerite Duras. The analysis examines to what extent these diverse medial representations constitute “historical matter” themselves, which help(ed) to shape the cultural memory of the nuclear attack, and how they manage, through documentary/narrative/filmic measures, to reflect on the material entanglements of the bombing of Hiroshima. History and memory are thereby not only seen as merely cognitive undertakings, but as dynamic material processes that entail various ethical implications.

Abstract:
Abstract Next generation RF sensor modules for multifunction active electronically steered antenna (AESA) systems will need a combination of different operating modes, such as radar, electronic warfare (EW) functionalities and communications/datalinks within the same antenna frontend. They typically operate in C-Band, X-Band and Ku-Band and imply a bandwidth requirement of more than 10 GHz. For the realisation of modern active electronically steered antennas, the transmit/receive (T/R) modules have to match strict geometry demands. A major challenge for these future multifunction RF sensor modules is dictated by the half-wavelength antenna grid spacing, that limits the physical channel width to < 12 mm or even less, depending on the highest frequency of operation with accordant beam pointing requirements. A promising solution to overcome these geometry demands is the reduction of the total monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) chip area, achieved by integrating individual RF functionalities, which are commonly achieved through individual integrated circuits (ICs), into new multifunctional (MFC) MMICs. Various concepts, some of them already implemented, towards next generation RF sensor modules will be discussed and explained in this work.

Full text
Abstract:
The prose work by Italo Calvino, Invisible cities is of special interest in the study of D.J. Opperman’s Komas uil 'n bamboesstok.Calvino’s novel also has a character, the fictionalised Marco Polo, who plays such an important role in Komas uil 'n bamboesstok. When the traces of Italo Calvino’s work are sought in Komas, the coherence between poems in the volume emerges more clearly. The importance of Calvino’s “novel” as intertext does not primarily reside in the clarifying reciprocity which it has with single poems or pairs of poems. It is the central intertcxt in the volume, seeing that it is of determining importance for its structure. Opperman’s poetic technique in this volume reiterates the structure of Invisible cities: multiplicity which in the end can be reduced to unity.

Addis, Victoria. "Forming Ecomasculinities through Deep Ecology in Gravity's Rainbow." Trumpeter 36, no. 1 (March 19, 2021): 42–62. http://dx.doi.org/10.7202/1075878ar.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines the concept of ecomasculinity--how masculinities and ecologies interact--through the lens of deep ecology, arguing (following Serpil Oppermann) that Pynchon's postmodernist boundary collapsing informs deep-ecological interconnections for male characters previously embroiled in negative cycles of patriarchal dominance. Ecomasculinity is an important emerging concept within ecocriticism, and recognising links between the positive iterations of masculinity and ecology that the ecomasculine seeks to express and the philosophy of deep ecology furthers the conversation about the utility of deep ecology to contemporary society.

Abstract:
Interpretation is powerfully influenced by the reader's ideological orientation. This is illustrated by means of a re-interpretation of DJ. Opperman's poem "Na ’n besoek aan die dieretuin", in which the typological intertext of the ‘oorredingslied' (song of persuasion), activated by the motto of the poem, is taken into account. The alternative reading of the poem generated in this way is validated by integrating key textual elements at present not taken into account by leading critics, notably Grove.

Abstract:
As Serpil Oppermann has stated “the Anthropocene has come to signify a discourse embedded in the global scale vision of the sedimentary traces of the anthropos” (“The Scale of the Anthropocene” 2). In the following article we wish to revisit the practice of leaving traces through thinking with wastes as traces human beings leave behind and lands of waste that co-compose today’s naturecultures (Haraway, Companion Species). Situating our research in the context of Polish ecocriticism, we would like to think-with an art project by Diana Lelonek entitled Center for the Living Things, in which the artist gathers and exhibits waste that “have become the natural environment for many living organisms” (Lelonek). Following the ambivalent and chaotic traces of wastes, we offer a concept of stig(e)merging to rethink the “unruly edges” (Tsing 141-54) of capitalist wastelands. We fathom stig(e)merging as a feminist methodology that relies on reacting to changes and alterations in the milieu, as well as the actions and needs of others, and on participating in the common work of reshaping the un/wasted world together with them.
