High-technology Entrepreneurship has been a key driver of innovation and economic growth in the US. Aided by factors such as the success in IT and IT-enabled services industries and a booming economy, India has seen a sharp increase in activity in technology entrepreneurship. This thesis explored the opportunities and issues in building and growing technology startups in India. Money, market, manpower, and mentors were identified as the broad areas in which startups face challenges. The specific issues within these areas were analyzed from entrepreneurs' and investors' perspectives and potential solutions were recommended. While many of the issues faced by startups in India turned out to be similar to those faced by startups in the US, a few issues were found to be unique to India. The sources for data included in-depth interviews with participants in the Indian entrepreneurial ecosystem as well as existing research on entrepreneurship in US and India.

There is growing interest among schools, other public agencies, and secular non-profit organizations to involve young people in current community planning efforts. Missing from discourse, however are the roles churches and other faith-based institutions can play in involving youth. Across the nation, churches and church-affiliated community organizations provide adults opportunities to revitalize their communities. In this thesis, two types of challenges that hinder these organizations from providing similar opportunities to urban youth will be examined. One such challenge focuses on internal obstacles within faith-based organizations that dissuade new models of participation. The second challenge focuses on several relational obstacles that contribute to a disconnection between leadership of faith-based organizations and contemporary urban youth culture. In spite of these challenges, this thesis suggest that some churches and church-affiliated community organizations serving low-income communities are well positioned to include urban youth bring in their community planning efforts. This thesis will explore the merits of that claim. The goals of this thesis are (1) to identify the various institutional and relational challenges that impede collaborations between faith-based institutions and urban youth in community development; and (2) to draw the attention of youth serving- and other church-affiliated community organizations to innovative and progressive approaches for youth participation.

This case study explores the first and only electronic reverse auction (e-RA) conducted by the United States Air Force (USAF) in Kuwait and addresses both theoretical gaps in e-RA knowledge and practitioner gaps within the Department of Defense (DoD). Qualitative research based on a single case study explored 1) cultural implications of conducting an e-RA in the Middle East and 2) procedures DoD contracting officers could follow to use e-RAs for stateside and contingency procurementsà ¢ and expected savings from doing so. Findings suggest that Middle Eastern sellers with a cultural disposition to avoid risky technology-based acquisition participated in the USAF auction because they trusted the USAF more than buyers in the local market. Sellers also felt increased satisfaction with the e-RA even when they did not win because the process increased fairness, transparency and reduced the negative effects of "wasta" and the general Arab business climate of distrust, unfairness, and favoritism. Secondly, a detailed spend analysis of FY07à ¢ -08 USAF spend data, extrapolated across DoD, suggests the DoD is leaving billions of dollars on the table by not using e-RAs. Drawing on the results, implications for theory and practice are explicated. Finally, study limitations are disclosed, and opportunities for future research are identified.

Naumann, Eckart. "The South African textile industry : opportunities and constraints with particular reference to environmental issues and eco-labelling." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/5723.
Full textThe aim of this thesis is to analyse and highlight the key issues facing the South African textile industry as it attempts to re-align itself, from an industry that operated in a highly protected manufacturing and policy environment, to an industry confronted with globalisation, increased competition, improved foreign market access and important environmental issues. Critical challenges facing the South African textile industry, and that in many other developing and developed countries, include the increased need for international competitiveness, the integration of environmental issues with trade aspects, and the potential impact that non-tariff trade barriers may have on the textile production pipeline. Trade patterns and value chains in the 21 st century will not necessarily resemble those of the past century. Tariff barriers are increasingly giving way to technical or non-tariff barriers, and there is a growing emphasis on environmentally preferable production methods, especially in the developed world. This has important consequences for developing countries like South Africa, and presents specific challenges and opportunities.

Full textThe last two decades have been marked by the rise of emerging economies and the emergence of start-ups and Hi-Tech SMEs with high international growth. This trend has spawned a new area of research, international entrepreneurship in emerging economies. The purpose of this qualitative research is to study the factors that influence the process of identifying international opportunities in technological SMEs from an emerging economy, Tunisia. To this end, we are studying the process of internationalization of seven Tunisian technological SMEs in the information and communications technology sector. The results of the intra- and inter-case analysis identify entrepreneurial personality traits, international entrepreneurial capabilities and relational networks as the three main categories of factors that influence the identification of international opportunities. Our research results in the formulation and discussion of eight proposals that make it possible to schematize an explanatory model of the internationalization of technological SMEs emerging from emerging economies

Full textAfter more than a decade of comprehensive research work in the area of electronic government (e-government), no attempt has yet been made to undertake a systematic literature review on the costs, opportunities, benefits and risks that influence the implementation of e-government. This is particularly significant given the various related challenges that governments have faced over the years when implementing e-government initiatives. Hence, the aim of this paper is to undertake a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature addressing these issues using a systematic review of 132 studies identified from the Scopus online database and Google Scholar together with a manual review of relevant papers from journals dedicated to electronic government research such as Electronic Government, an International Journal (EGIJ), International Journal of Electronic Government Research (IJEGR) and Transforming Government: People, Process, and Policy (TGPPP). The overall review indicated that although a large number of papers discuss costs, opportunities, benefits and risks, treatment of these issues have tended to be superficial. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical studies which can statistically evaluate the performance of these constructs in relation to the various e-government systems. Therefore, this research would help governments to better analyse the impact of costs, opportunities, benefits and risks on the success of e-government systems and its pre-adoption from an implementation perspective.

Full textThe aim of this paper is to describe the process of building a multi-level intervention called the Enriched Opportunities Programme, the objective of which is to provide a sustainable activity-based model for people with dementia living in long-term care. It is hypothesised that five key elements need to work together to bring about a sustainable activity-based model of care. These elements are specialist expertise-the staff role of Locksmith was developed as part of this programme; individualised assessment and case work; an activity and occupation programme; staff training; and management and leadership. These elements working together are known as the Enriched Opportunities Programme. This paper reports on the processes undertaken to develop Enriched Opportunities from its inception to the present, and focuses on lessons learnt from the literature, an expert working group and action research in four UK study sites. A blueprint for evaluation in other long-term care facilities is described.

In the recent year seasoned equity issues are popular in Taiwan and how to measure the operating result and growth opportunity of firms is the problem of financial report analysis. First this study investigates the effect of seasoned equity issues on stock prices. Then this study examines the relation between the effect of seasoned equity issues and growth opportunities of firms. And this study further examines the effect of bull/bear markets. Using listed firms'' data between 1989 and 1998, this paper examines the "offering for cash " events by testing the abnormal returns calculated from market model. Cross-sectional regressions are then performed to test this study''s hypothesis. The conclusion is as follows: 1. The stock price effect of seasoned equity offerings possess positive information contents on ex-dividend date, but it posses no information content on "SEC approval date". 2. On "SEC approval date" there is significant positive relation between short term abnormal return and ratio of liability, operating income, increment of fixed assets. On ex-dividend date only growth rate of equity has found the significant relation. The growth rate of operating income has been found positive relationship with the long-term announcement effects. 3. In the short time, only growth rates of equities and EPS have been found different effects in bull/bear markets on ex-dividend date. In the long time the ratio of liabilities, EPS and growth rate of operating income have been found the effects.

The capital expansions make the firms to acquire or reserve capital. Theoretically, managers should attempt to gather shareholder’s wealth by making relevant investment decisions, but immoderate capital expansions result in outstanding shares rise and damage stockholders’ equity. The research is to investigate the relationship among pre-issue capital expansions, growth opportunities, IPO underpricing, and post-issue operating performance. We adopt t-test and multiple regression to analyze the Taiwan stock market’s initial public offerings for the period form 1999 through 2001. The empirical results are shown as follows: First, the ratio of stock dividend from retained earnings is positively associated with the post-issue growth opportunities. Second, the ratio of stock dividend from paid in capital is negatively associated with underpricing. Third, whether an issuer adopts stock dividend from retained earnings or from paid in capital to going public or not does not affect operating performance decline. Fourth, there is significant negative relationship between the ratio of seasoned equity offering(SEO)and post-issue long run operating performance. Fifth, the ratio of stock dividend from retained earnings is positively associated with post-issue long run operating performance. Sixth, there is partly significant negative relation between the ratio of stock dividend from paid in capital and post-issue long run operating performance.
Deborne, Elise. "La mixité d'usages verticale depuis une perspective habitante : étude de cinq produits immobiliers résidentiel et commercial montréalais récents." Thèse, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/19063.
Full textMixed use has become a key planning principle, promoted as essential for urban quality, vibrancy, and sustainability. However, in practice, mixed use remains mostly a tool for the intensification – notably on a vertical dimension – of inner-city districts with tight housing market and land scarcity. Still, in that context, it encounters cultural barriers. It is therefore appropriate to examine the opportunities and issues – from the perspective of occupiers – in vertically mixed residential and commercial development (functions usually considered as complementary and compatible, and frequently combined at the building scale), and the conditions in which such experiences arise. To address this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten residents and six retailers of five new vertically mixed residential and commercial properties located in Montreal. Benefits in terms of proximity to retail stores and services, economic vitality, quality of the built environment, vibrancy, perceived security and community life have been highlighted. Land-use conflicts (direct), conflicts of scale, conflict of interest (indirect), and space and use constraints have been discerned from the cross-case analysis. The study illustrates a dialectic relation between building-complex and local scales; the difficult task of implementing a mix limited to compatible functions; and the challenge of integrating various uses to capitalize on synergies and prevent conflict and constraints. In this last respect, the study considers the opportunity presented, in Quebec, by the by-law on conditional use. It also points out the significance afterwards of the property management in the harmonious integration of various uses.

This study analyzes the development history and background of Taihsi Ocean Park and summarizes the reasons of this unoccupied space to explore the opportunity of space’s utilization and the overall vitalization of Taihsi Township. This study firstly defines the unoccupied space and the review the literature of re-use programs. Subsequently, it discusses the connotation of communitarianism and community planning and reorganization and elaborates the development and initial planning of Taihsi Ocean Park. In this study, we employ the in-depth interview method to interview ten distinguished community leaders, who are related to the construction process of Taihsi Ocean Park. The result shows that the cause of unoccupied public space can be divided into four aspects: political factors, public construction management, public construction planning deficiency and improvement, policy implementation and cost-benefit analysis. This study also explores the vitalization opportunity of unoccupied space by promoting the diversified activation options for the future development of tourism in Taihsi Township, especially through the proposal of Taihsi Barbie Doll Museum initiated by international designer Mr. Lin Guoji to increase the potential of success of the vitalization. This article suggests that the diversified sightseeing venues should operate in the form of nonprofit fund management with high quality manpower, rich event content, operational design, and combined marketing strategies to free space to promote Taihsi Township’s local industrial upgrading and tourism development.
