High-technology Entrepreneurship has been a key driver of innovation and economic growth in the US. Aided by factors such as the success in IT and IT-enabled services industries and a booming economy, India has seen a sharp increase in activity in technology entrepreneurship. This thesis explored the opportunities and issues in building and growing technology startups in India. Money, market, manpower, and mentors were identified as the broad areas in which startups face challenges. The specific issues within these areas were analyzed from entrepreneurs' and investors' perspectives and potential solutions were recommended. While many of the issues faced by startups in India turned out to be similar to those faced by startups in the US, a few issues were found to be unique to India. The sources for data included in-depth interviews with participants in the Indian entrepreneurial ecosystem as well as existing research on entrepreneurship in US and India.

Abstract:
This study was based on the present writer's perception that inequality in education is a result of people's negative traditional cultural attitudes to girls and women and that, to provide equal opportunities for both girls and boys, there is a need for changes in the primary and secondary school curricula that will alter peoples' attitudes. The thesis of this dissertation is that equal opportunities policies are often based on developed countries' models, recommended for implementation in developing countries' education systems by funding and research bodies. These policies do not take into account the perceptions of the key players in the implementation process and how their perceptions might influence the success or failure of intended measures to provide equal opportunities in education for boys and girls. It is hypothesised that in Uganda, the government has chosen affirmative action policies to reduce gender inequality in education but, from the perceptions of the key players, they have had unexpected consequences which reinforce past patterns of advantage and disadvantage for the targeted group. The advantages and disadvantages are grounded in the contradictory and paradoxical outcomes of internationally and nationally recommended educational policies. This is because policies deal with only one aspect of educational inequality, which is perceived in terms of girls' non-participation in education (access, enrolment and retention). They ignore the attitudinal problem, which is an outcome of the socio-economic, socio-cultural, and school related factors which not only further disadvantage girls but boys as well, thus creating more inequalities. The study focuses upon a cross-section of those who inform and implement policies in the Ministry of Education, those who implement policies at the district and school level and those whom policies target in the classroom. The data, which is selectively quoted in the study, was derived from standardised open-ended elite and group interviews. Key players' perceptions, which impact on the provision of equal opportunities in education, are discussed in relation to international and national policies in education. Particular attention is paid in the study to understanding key players' perceptions of the meaning of equal opportunities in education. This was considered as central to the successful implementation of equal opportunities measures in a way that will not disadvantage any group. It soon became clear from the perceptions on equal opportunities held by key policy makers and implementers in the Ministry of Education and at the district levels, that the problem was not changing attitudes, but increasing access, enrolment and retention for girls within the system of education. At the school level, the problem involved increasing: enrolment; retention; academic competition between boys and girls; participation of girls in school leadership; interaction; and strategies to reduce discrimination practices between boys and girls by their teachers. These perceptions were reflected in individual schools. Implications for theory and practice of equal opportunities in education are drawn from findings from the study.

There is growing interest among schools, other public agencies, and secular non-profit organizations to involve young people in current community planning efforts. Missing from discourse, however are the roles churches and other faith-based institutions can play in involving youth. Across the nation, churches and church-affiliated community organizations provide adults opportunities to revitalize their communities. In this thesis, two types of challenges that hinder these organizations from providing similar opportunities to urban youth will be examined. One such challenge focuses on internal obstacles within faith-based organizations that dissuade new models of participation. The second challenge focuses on several relational obstacles that contribute to a disconnection between leadership of faith-based organizations and contemporary urban youth culture. In spite of these challenges, this thesis suggest that some churches and church-affiliated community organizations serving low-income communities are well positioned to include urban youth bring in their community planning efforts. This thesis will explore the merits of that claim. The goals of this thesis are (1) to identify the various institutional and relational challenges that impede collaborations between faith-based institutions and urban youth in community development; and (2) to draw the attention of youth serving- and other church-affiliated community organizations to innovative and progressive approaches for youth participation.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe purpose of this thesis is to examine the integration of the Somali immigrants in Sweden and to explore the factors that impede or help in the process. The study in particular aims at looking at how culture, identity and migration form immigrants’ integration experiences. It will further explore the communication barriers with, mainly; the government institutions from the perspective of Somalis and how removing these barriers could help improve the situation. The thesis also discusses the theories of transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, immigration, and integration in relation to communication for development and social behaviour change.Qualitative research methods have been selected to explore the experiences of the Somali immigrants integrate into the wider Swedish community through the use of semi-structured interviews. The Somali immigrants have good networks among themselves in Sweden, and with home country, however they do not manage to establish a good networking with the Swedish society. The outcome of this study implies that most immigrants feel that there are communication barriers in the way to a better integration. Through the use of qualitative research in semi-structured interviews with selected Somali immigrants from various backgrounds, the study shows that there are many issues that might help the community to integrate into Sweden and proposes some recommendations on how the situation could be improved.

Abstract:
This study seeks to identify the factors that influence young women to take up a career in the construction trades in Northern Ireland and to gain a better understanding of the perceptions that lead them to decide on a career in construction. The study focuses on the views, perceptions, understandings and experiences of young people and utilises a mixed methods approach, consisting of a large scale quantitative study of 14-16 year olds along with follow up qualitative interviews with young women and other key stakeholders in the construction industry. Within the context of this study, Roberts' notion of opportunity structures is used, and extended with Bourdieu's concepts of 'habitus' and 'field', as a way of exploring how young women have come to internalise taken-for-granted ways of thinking about occupations that reflect their wider experiences and relationships at home, school and in the world of work. The study found that the young women's attitudes and perspectives were influenced by the family and their peers. The study also identifies entrenched attitudes, where girls are discouraged, prevented and inhibited from accessing opportunities to explore particular career choices by careers officers and teachers. The study highlights how women on construction sites might be undermined but also highlights that young women are confident in their own abilities. This study is one of the first to consider a range of construction craft career choices for women to contemplate. The implications of this study include the need for schools and colleges to provide equality of opportunity for girls to participate in careers talks and vocational sampling programmes. It is suggested that sector bodies must also seek to promote and support women in construction apprenticeship programmes and that construction sector employers must implement improved monitoring and support mechanisms for female workers.

This case study explores the first and only electronic reverse auction (e-RA) conducted by the United States Air Force (USAF) in Kuwait and addresses both theoretical gaps in e-RA knowledge and practitioner gaps within the Department of Defense (DoD). Qualitative research based on a single case study explored 1) cultural implications of conducting an e-RA in the Middle East and 2) procedures DoD contracting officers could follow to use e-RAs for stateside and contingency procurementsà ¢ and expected savings from doing so. Findings suggest that Middle Eastern sellers with a cultural disposition to avoid risky technology-based acquisition participated in the USAF auction because they trusted the USAF more than buyers in the local market. Sellers also felt increased satisfaction with the e-RA even when they did not win because the process increased fairness, transparency and reduced the negative effects of "wasta" and the general Arab business climate of distrust, unfairness, and favoritism. Secondly, a detailed spend analysis of FY07à ¢ -08 USAF spend data, extrapolated across DoD, suggests the DoD is leaving billions of dollars on the table by not using e-RAs. Drawing on the results, implications for theory and practice are explicated. Finally, study limitations are disclosed, and opportunities for future research are identified.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse and highlight the key issues facing the South African textile industry as it attempts to re-align itself, from an industry that operated in a highly protected manufacturing and policy environment, to an industry confronted with globalisation, increased competition, improved foreign market access and important environmental issues. Critical challenges facing the South African textile industry, and that in many other developing and developed countries, include the increased need for international competitiveness, the integration of environmental issues with trade aspects, and the potential impact that non-tariff trade barriers may have on the textile production pipeline. Trade patterns and value chains in the 21 st century will not necessarily resemble those of the past century. Tariff barriers are increasingly giving way to technical or non-tariff barriers, and there is a growing emphasis on environmentally preferable production methods, especially in the developed world. This has important consequences for developing countries like South Africa, and presents specific challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the enduring nature of child labour on Ivory Coast’s cocoa farms. The thesis shows that the role of the state in promoting instead of inhibiting child labour practices in the Ivory Coast favours the thriving of challenging factors to any prospect of a total abolition. This thesis focuses on the influences of traditions customary practices underpinning the child labour practice. The thesis shows the adverse role of Multinational Corporations operating in Ivory Coast’s cocoa industry. This thesis shows that despite Ivory Coast being a signatory to the ILO Convention on the Worst Forms of Child Labour 1999 (No. 182), the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1999) as well as other regional and sub-regional legal instruments, the appropriate legal and policy response to child labour has yet to be provided. The thesis, therefore, offers the pedagogic approach as the shifting factor.

Abstract:

Abstract:

After more than a decade of comprehensive research work in the area of electronic government (e-government), no attempt has yet been made to undertake a systematic literature review on the costs, opportunities, benefits and risks that influence the implementation of e-government. This is particularly significant given the various related challenges that governments have faced over the years when implementing e-government initiatives. Hence, the aim of this paper is to undertake a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature addressing these issues using a systematic review of 132 studies identified from the Scopus online database and Google Scholar together with a manual review of relevant papers from journals dedicated to electronic government research such as Electronic Government, an International Journal (EGIJ), International Journal of Electronic Government Research (IJEGR) and Transforming Government: People, Process, and Policy (TGPPP). The overall review indicated that although a large number of papers discuss costs, opportunities, benefits and risks, treatment of these issues have tended to be superficial. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical studies which can statistically evaluate the performance of these constructs in relation to the various e-government systems. Therefore, this research would help governments to better analyse the impact of costs, opportunities, benefits and risks on the success of e-government systems and its pre-adoption from an implementation perspective.

The aim of this paper is to describe the process of building a multi-level intervention called the Enriched Opportunities Programme, the objective of which is to provide a sustainable activity-based model for people with dementia living in long-term care. It is hypothesised that five key elements need to work together to bring about a sustainable activity-based model of care. These elements are specialist expertise-the staff role of Locksmith was developed as part of this programme; individualised assessment and case work; an activity and occupation programme; staff training; and management and leadership. These elements working together are known as the Enriched Opportunities Programme. This paper reports on the processes undertaken to develop Enriched Opportunities from its inception to the present, and focuses on lessons learnt from the literature, an expert working group and action research in four UK study sites. A blueprint for evaluation in other long-term care facilities is described.

Full text
Abstract:
People living in extra care housing have a variety of mental health needs. Whilst many people opt for extra care housing as a means of enhancing quality of life, it is recognised that around 30% will experience significant mental health problems notably dementia and depression. This often leads to them having to move out of extra care housing or becoming isolated within their apartment. The Enriched Opportunities Programme (EOP) was developed by ExtraCare Charitable Trust and Professor Brooker and her research team as a means of ensuring that people experiencing mental health problems can continue to enjoy a good quality of life. EOP brings together what is known as best practice in a structured, systematic and proactive way. Key facets of the programs include a specialist staff role ¿the EOP Locksmith¿; staff training; individualized case work; liaison with health and social care teams; activity & occupation; and leadership. This report summarises a recently completed 2 year cluster randomised controlled trial. 5 extra care housing schemes were randomly assigned to receive the EOP for an 18 month period. A further 5 housing schemes were randomly assigned to receive a placebo intervention consisting of employing an extra member of staff called a Project Support Worker Coach (PSWC) for the same time period. We followed the lives of the 268 most vulnerable residents living in all these extra care housing schemes and villages. We compared the results for people receiving the EOP intervention with the PSWC intervention and analysed the differences. The process of implementing EOP and the impact on people¿s lives has been very positive. The main advantages in the EOP schemes were that residents were Half as likely to have to move out into a care home ¿ Far less likely to spend time in hospital as an in-patient ¿ More likely to have a GP visit ¿ More likely to see a community physiotherapist, occupational therapist and a chiropodist More likely to have their mental health problems diagnosed In addition residents in the EOP schemes and villages ¿ Rated their Quality of Life more positively ¿ Reported decreased symptoms of depression over time ¿ Reported greater feelings of social support and inclusion There were also a number of advantages enjoyed by participants in both the EOP and the PSWC interventions. Residents in both interventions reported ¿ Greater opportunity to be active ¿ Greater use of community facilities ¿ More fun ¿ Greater variety of things to do. This report will be of interest to all those involved in the provision of extra care housing and to those implementing the National Dementia Strategy.

Abstract:
The thematic area of the research is the populist narrative in Italy and the analysis of the phenomenon through the perception of equality of opportunities, the trust on institutions and the attitudes towards immigrants. In Italy with the growing of national populism there have been witnessed some intolerant attitudes towards immigrants. The differences between majority group and minority group and a discriminating narrative have been observed among the population. We therefore wanted to research the influences and the connections among these constructs. Based on literature review, we found that the relation between equality of opportunities and attitudes towards immigrants has not been deeply studied. The data used in the study are part of the database of European Social Survey (ESS) Round 9. The study includes the analysis of the responses given by two thousand, seven hundred forty-five Italian people to the constructs that constituted the objects of the research. The results showed positive and significant correlations among equality of opportunities beliefs, attitudes towards immigrants and trust in institutions. A simple mediation model was tested and revealed an indirect effect of equality of opportunities beliefs and attitudes towards immigrants through trust in institutions. The implications of the results for the improvements of intergroup contact are discussed.

In the recent year seasoned equity issues are popular in Taiwan and how to measure the operating result and growth opportunity of firms is the problem of financial report analysis. First this study investigates the effect of seasoned equity issues on stock prices. Then this study examines the relation between the effect of seasoned equity issues and growth opportunities of firms. And this study further examines the effect of bull/bear markets. Using listed firms'' data between 1989 and 1998, this paper examines the "offering for cash " events by testing the abnormal returns calculated from market model. Cross-sectional regressions are then performed to test this study''s hypothesis. The conclusion is as follows: 1. The stock price effect of seasoned equity offerings possess positive information contents on ex-dividend date, but it posses no information content on "SEC approval date". 2. On "SEC approval date" there is significant positive relation between short term abnormal return and ratio of liability, operating income, increment of fixed assets. On ex-dividend date only growth rate of equity has found the significant relation. The growth rate of operating income has been found positive relationship with the long-term announcement effects. 3. In the short time, only growth rates of equities and EPS have been found different effects in bull/bear markets on ex-dividend date. In the long time the ratio of liabilities, EPS and growth rate of operating income have been found the effects.

The capital expansions make the firms to acquire or reserve capital. Theoretically, managers should attempt to gather shareholder’s wealth by making relevant investment decisions, but immoderate capital expansions result in outstanding shares rise and damage stockholders’ equity. The research is to investigate the relationship among pre-issue capital expansions, growth opportunities, IPO underpricing, and post-issue operating performance. We adopt t-test and multiple regression to analyze the Taiwan stock market’s initial public offerings for the period form 1999 through 2001. The empirical results are shown as follows: First, the ratio of stock dividend from retained earnings is positively associated with the post-issue growth opportunities. Second, the ratio of stock dividend from paid in capital is negatively associated with underpricing. Third, whether an issuer adopts stock dividend from retained earnings or from paid in capital to going public or not does not affect operating performance decline. Fourth, there is significant negative relationship between the ratio of seasoned equity offering(SEO)and post-issue long run operating performance. Fifth, the ratio of stock dividend from retained earnings is positively associated with post-issue long run operating performance. Sixth, there is partly significant negative relation between the ratio of stock dividend from paid in capital and post-issue long run operating performance.

Abstract:
Mixed use has become a key planning principle, promoted as essential for urban quality, vibrancy, and sustainability. However, in practice, mixed use remains mostly a tool for the intensification – notably on a vertical dimension – of inner-city districts with tight housing market and land scarcity. Still, in that context, it encounters cultural barriers. It is therefore appropriate to examine the opportunities and issues – from the perspective of occupiers – in vertically mixed residential and commercial development (functions usually considered as complementary and compatible, and frequently combined at the building scale), and the conditions in which such experiences arise. To address this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten residents and six retailers of five new vertically mixed residential and commercial properties located in Montreal. Benefits in terms of proximity to retail stores and services, economic vitality, quality of the built environment, vibrancy, perceived security and community life have been highlighted. Land-use conflicts (direct), conflicts of scale, conflict of interest (indirect), and space and use constraints have been discerned from the cross-case analysis. The study illustrates a dialectic relation between building-complex and local scales; the difficult task of implementing a mix limited to compatible functions; and the challenge of integrating various uses to capitalize on synergies and prevent conflict and constraints. In this last respect, the study considers the opportunity presented, in Quebec, by the by-law on conditional use. It also points out the significance afterwards of the property management in the harmonious integration of various uses.
