Theoretical studies of nonlinear optical effects in nematic liquid crystals including degenerate four-wave mixing are presented. The optically induced Freedericksz transition which is essential for these effects is also described. Experimental investigations are performed using a homeotropically aligned MBBA thin film. Good agreement is obtained between the theoretical predictions and the experiments. Some potential applications of phase conjugation obtained by the backward degenerate four wave-mixing process in the field of adaptive optics and image processing are demonstrated.<br>Ph. D.

The optical properties of the chromium doped spinel type semiconductor $\alpha$-$\rm ZnAl\sb2S\sb4$ have been examined over the temperature range 2-540K. From extrinsic absorption and photoluminescence spectra the transitions between the ground state $\rm\sp4A\sb{2g}$ and the excited levels $\rm\sp2E\sb{g}\ (R\sb1$ and R$\rm\sb2),\ \sp2T\sb{2g},\ \sp4T\sb{2g}$ and $\rm\sp4T\sb{1g}$ of the Cr$\sp{3+}$ ions were observed. Abstract:
Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals (PDLCs) are attracting considerable attention for new optical displays. This thesis describes the synthesis of PDLC materials, fabrication of cells and study of their optical and dielectric behaviour. This work includes two areas of research. Predominantly it is an investigation of the properties of PDLCs prepared using Polymerisation Phase Separation (PIPS) by UV irradiation of mutually soluble liquid crystal (LC) and pre-polymer materials, developed for use in PDLC systems. A limited study of liquid crystal gels completes the thesis. We demonstrate that the
