Full textDeflection of rays is described by mirage effect where density gradient is due to an acoustical waves. A pulsed piezoelectric tube generates a resonant acoustical wave. A flow under pressure goes through the cavity to avoid thermal convection and to increase acoustical amplitude. A first analyse set flow parameters to obtain stability. Theoretical study gives the behavior of mecano-acoustic system. This study leads to an analytic formulation for the rays curvature. Experimental tests, with He-NE-e and CO2 laser beam validate it and show properties of the system. By example, for a pulsed laser beam, it’s equivalent to a tuning lens with a voltage control. Because the active gaz is air the principle can be adapted for a lot of optical wavelengths

Full textThe generalized Lorenz-Mie (GLMT) is developed to describe the interaction between an arbitrary shaped beam and a homogeneous spheroid. Analytical expressions of the amplitudes of the scattering fields, absorption and extinction crosssections, and the radiation pressure are obtained. The numerical results are also presented. To overcome the drawback of the GLMT in numerical calculation for a large spheroid, the classical geometrical optics is extended to the case of Gaussian beam scattering by a spheroid. In experimental aspect, an optical system on the basis of the spectral light extinction method is developed and used for wet steam measurement in EDF. The influences of the scattering by the particles in the edge measurement zone and of the multiple scattering on the extinction spectrum are analyzed by using the Monte Carlo method

Full textLaser scanning microscopy is limited in lateral resolution by the diffraction of light. Superresolution methods have been developed since the 90s to overcome this limitation. However, superresolution is generally achieved at the cost of a greater complexity (high power lasers, very long acquisition times, specic uorophores) and limitations on the observable samples. In some cases, such as Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) and Switching Laser Modes (SLAM), a more modest improvement in resolution is obtained with a reduced complexity and fewer limitations. We propose here methods which improve the resolution while minimizing the experimental constraints and keeping most of the advantages of classical microscopy. First, we show that we can improve by twenty percent the resolution of confocal microscopy by using Bessel-Gauss beams, and by having the right pinhole size (1 Airy Unit), compared to conventional Gaussian beam based confocal microscopy. The advantages of this strategy include simplicity of installation and use, linear polarization compatibility, possibility to combine it with other resolution enhancement and superresolution strategies. We demonstrate the resolution enhancement capabilities of Bessel-Gauss beams both theoretically and experimentally on nano-spheres and biological tissue samples with a resolution of 0.39. We achieved these resolutions without any residual artifacts coming from the Bessel-Gauss beam side lobes. We also show that the resolution enhancement of Bessel-Gauss beams leads to a better statistical colocalization analysis with fewer false positive results than when using Gaussian beams. We have also used Bessel-Gauss beams of different orders to further improve the resolution by combining them in SLAM microscopy achieving a resolution of 0.17 (90 nm with a wavelength of 532 nm). In a second step, we propose a method to improve the resolution of confocal microscopy by combining different laser modes and deconvolution. Two images of the same eld are acquired with the confocal microscope using different laser modes and are used as inputs to a deconvolution algorithm. The two laser modes have different Point Spread Functions and thus provide complementary information leading to an image with enhanced resolution compared to using a single confocal image as input to the same deconvolution algorithm. By changing the laser modes to Bessel-Gauss beams, we were able to improve the effciency of the deconvolution algorithm and to obtain images with a residual Point Spread Function having a width smaller than 100 nm. The proposed method requires only a few add-ons to the classic confocal or two photon microscopes. Finally, we propose a three dimensional tomography reconstruction method using Bessel-Gauss beams as projection tools in two-photon microscopy. While focussing Bessel-Gauss beams at an angle in two photon microscopy, we can obtain a series of projections that can be used for tomography reconstruction. The aim is to test the practicality of the methods allowing to reconstruct a volume while using fewer images than plane by plane acquisitions as in classic two-photon microscopy.

Full textThe number of integrated circuit (IC) type "Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuits" (MMIC) increased with the number of systems operating at higher frequencies. For a better design, it is important to possess probing tools for the characterization of the IC. In this Ph. D. Thesis, we concentrate on the probing of MMIC made of Gallium Arsenide. A laser beam is focused onto the IC under test. The beam enters the substrate and it will be reflected from the backside of the IC. The reflected laser beam is modulated by the electro-optic effect. By measuring this modulation, we can determine the wanted microwave signal. This work describes the development of prototype and the obtained results. The setup of the tool is simple because of the use of optical fiber and inexpensive. We analyze the theoretical (dependency of the optical axes on the microwave field) and technical (variation of the polarization and intensity of the laser and the beam divergence) problems of this probing technique
Chille, Vanessa. "Quantum optics with structured light." Thesis, Paris 6, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA066358/document.
Full textThis thesis aims at learning more about nonclassical structured light. Quantum optics and structured light are two topics that are subject to countless scientific examinations. However, they are very rarely combined and the quantum properties of structured light are not as thoroughly studied as they deserve. By structured light, we mean any light fields with complex transverse distributions of intensity, phase or polarization. We want to link the topics of quantum optics and structured light in this thesis. For this purpose, we experimentally generate particular nonclassical structured light fields. In particular, we construct an experimental setup that enables us, in principle, to produce arbitrary amplitude squeezed vector beams, i.e. light beams with a complex transverse structure of the state of polarization. Furthermore, we analyze spatial properties of light beams, and their quantum noise theoretically. We specifically perform theoretical examinations of the quantum noise in the width of a light beam. To show the feasibility of an experimental verification of our theoretical results, we conduct simulations for the measurement of spatial parameters of a beam's cross-section by a multipixel detector

Full textNew applications of optical switching require very high performance devices, i.e. a low switching times combined with very low crosstalk between two arms and a switching current of the order of a few tens of milliamps. This combination is extremely delicate to obtain, but the problem becomes more complicated with the addition of fiber to fiber losses used for integration, which is of the order of one decibel. The work described in this thesis concerns the above mentioned problem. It follows the different work in IEMN in this area. Here we first developed a multiple quantum well waveguide structure to increase mechanisms of index variation. Then, we optimized switches with very low crosstalk and also Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Then these devices were manufactured in a clean room and characterized. The results of this study were not as per our expectations due to excessive losses in optical waveguides. In parallel, we have designed, fabricated and characterized other types of diluted waveguides with a very thin core. We finally obtained coupling losses of 1.6 dB/face without anti-reflective coating, which would give 0.1 dB with such a coating. This very interesting result should be related to the fact that the refractive index variation obtained on these guides is very important, showing an effect of free carriers much higher than in conventional semiconductor guides. All these aspects make our waveguide an excellent candidate for high performance optical switches

Full textThis thesis is related to the field of nano-optomechanics and the use of nanomechanical resonators as ultrasensitive force sensor to study their interaction with light. A silicon carbide nanowire is positioned in a tightly focused laser beam. This enables, by measuring the transmitted intensity fluctuations, to observe with great dynamics and with a sensitivity close to the standard quantum limit the Brownian motion of the nanoresonator. The huge force sensitivity of the nanowires, due to their ultra low mass, permits to study the measurement backaction, which is induced by the force exerted on the nanowire by the focused laser beam. The exploitation of the slight degeneracy observed between the two transverse mechanical polarizations enables to realize a vectorial bidimensional cartography of the optical force field, with a probe of sub-wavelength diameter. This measurement highlights the non-conservative feature of the light-matter interaction, a symbolic signature being the existence of vorticity in the measured force field. The latter shows strong spatial variations, which modify deeply the nanowire dynamics. This measurement backaction is responsible of a strong coupling between the two mechanical polarizations of the nanowire fundamental mode. The bidimensional feature of the coupling and the force field non-conservative topology lead to a bifurcation and to a dynamical instability of the nanowire. This new optomechanical instability is observed with instantaneous optical forces, which follows instantaneously the intensity variations seen by the nanowire. In presence of absorption, a more general case of a force field partially delayed by the thermal time constants is studied, leading to a cooling, specific and tunable with the position, of the two mechanical polarizations. Then, the light-matter interaction between a laser and the nanowire and the great variety of optomechanical properties accessible with this approach are developed. These developments demonstrate the ability to observe and control optically nanomechanical resonators with a huge sensitivity, close to the attonewton, for ultrasensitive measurements of vectorial force fields

Full textThe increasing miniaturization of Microsystems in general or the emerging field of terahertz waves bring out the need of conceiving and realizing structures able to manipulate interference of beams of small diameter compared to the wavelength (a few tens of wavelengths only). Thanks to a phenomenological analysis resulting from the combination of diffractive optics, integrated optics and photonic crystal concepts, this work presents the different phenomena that are involved during the interaction between a confined beam and a 1D high index contrast, high aspect ratio periodical structures (1D photonic crystals typically). It results from this a set of simple scaling rules, which permit to achieve the structure design of devices like a focused beam narrow band reflector. The realization of a demonstrator in the terahertz range is presented

Full textIn this thesis, a complete study of the reflection of focused beams from a build- solid interface is presented. The incident beam is defined by a Gaussian velocity distribution along a plane emitter. The reflected beam is described through its pressure field in a region which is not restricted to the interface. By means of short wave asymptotic analysis, nonspecular phenomena is exhibited at any angle of incidence. In particular, for an incidence near the Rayleigh angle, the following non-specular phenomena have been observed : a distorsion of a part of the caustic beam, a lateral and axial displacements of the focal point, an asymmetric repartition of the acoustic pressure around the axis of the reflected beam, and a curve of the acoustic axis. All these phenomena have been validated by means of a cartography of the reflected beam. By comparing the non-specular phenomena of the reflection of a focused and a parallel beam, the cause of the non-specular reflection is revealed

Full textThe increasing complexity and decreasing sizes of today’s integrated optics devices raises the need for a characterization technique that gives a real insight of the intrinsic behavior of those devices. This work aims to demonstrate the extreme valuableness of scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) for the characterization of integrated optics devices working in the range of telecommunication wavelength [1. 2-1. 6 µm]. A brief overview of the electromagnetism theoretical background needed for a good understanding of near-field optical studies is given and the basic concepts of near-field scanning optical microscopy are described. Our work then focuses on the description of our technical implementation of a near-field optical experiment specifically applied to the study of photonic devices in the telecommunication wavelength range. Near-field optical studies of multimode interference (MMI) based devices, made by ion exchange on glass substrate and designed for astronomical telescope recombination, are then performed. The resulting electromagnetic field maps are deeply analyzed and compared to Beam Propagation Method (BPM) type simulation. We then show that SNOM allows us to accurately determine the physical parameters influencing the devices behavior (index contrast, mode excitation, geometrical parameters…). We also present as perspectives to this work some primal measurements on very low size photonic devices revealing resolution better than l/10 and identifying Bloch waves inside a photonic crystal based waveguide

Full textFree Space Optical communications (FSO) are range limited due to atmospheric turbulence. Adaptive optics can mitigate turbulence effects by adding a phase modulation on the emitted laser beam. However, both phase and amplitude modulation are needed to perform long range FSO. Previous numerical studies have shown that iterative phase conjugation is an efficient modulation technique for lasercom systems. This PhD thesis is dedicated to the development and the realization of the first experimental demonstration of the iterative phase conjugation principle in a controlled turbulence environment. An optical bench, representative of a long range propagation through strong turbulence, has been scaled down to few-meters propagation in visible.Several methods for complex field measurement and modulation are numerically studied. Selected methods are implemented and tested, such as a novel focal plane technique for complex field measurement. Finally, iterative phase conjugation is performed and results cross-correlated with an end-to-end model representative of the optical bench. This work is the first experimental demonstration of the optical phase conjugation principle. Applications can be found in other fields than lasercoms, such as high power lasers or propagation through highly diffusing biological tissues, both in need of laser emission modulation

Full textCurrently, an intense research takes place in the field of optical design, both on indusrial as well as academic plarforms. With my Ph. D. Dissertation I wish to contribute to this activity, through the improvement of commercial optical design programmes. My research work encompasses the following branches of modern optical design: integrated optics, beam shaping and hybrid diffractive/conventional optics. For the modelling of the above devices I developed new techniques to make their design process (analysis and synthesis) more powerful (i. E. Accurate, fast, convenient, providing additional degrees of freedom, allowing easy integration into complex systems) in comparison with former methods. Making a model in my case partly implies the creation of a new physical approach to describe some optical phenomenon, as well as the efficient implementation (usually on the basis of exact ray-tracing) of one that already existed. This way I could enrich the selection of "engineering tools" (i. E. Models), by which modern optical devices can be more easily incorporated in the process of optical design. .

Full textSilica, under electron beam (EB) of a few tens of keV, undergoes topographic and indicial modifications. Hence, it allows to consider the fabrication of micro optical components without having recourse to masking stage or chemical etching. The irradiation tool is a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) associated with driving softwares of the beam. With the aim, in the long term, to realize a very narrow filter made of a resonant cavity directly written by EB on the polished cladd of a monomode silica optical fiber, we devote this memory to the metrological and optical characterization of these changes. Holes, discs, lines, rectangular surfaces were elaborated using a focalized or defocalized beam. This experimental study made it possible to bring several answers concerning the phenomena on electron-silica interactions. The characterization of a few mm2 surfaces by the m-lines and Brewster methods showed the feasibility of waveguides and micro waveguides. The IWKB method led to the reconstruction of the index profil as a function of the irradiation parameters. All these characterizations led to a first outline of the final component
