Abstract:
Historical narratives reflect the biases of their creators. In order to promote his own interests, sporting goods magnate A.G. Spalding created a "creation myth" that baseball was a uniquely American sport which evolved from the English game "rounders." While historians later debunked this assertion and established an earlier and more complicated origin story for baseball, Spalding's historical narrative persists in popular culture. Optometry has a similar "creation myth" which holds that the profession began at the turn-of-the 20th century in the United States with the founding members of the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the move to make optometry a legislated profession. However, optometry's origins are much older, beginning in the late 13th century and, therefore, can be divided into periods. The period beginning in 1890 and which saw the founding of the AOA should be viewed as the beginning of "modern optometry." Optometry historians should recognize the importance of all periods of optometry history.

Abstract:
Dr. Minerva H. Weinstein (1893-1982), was the first woman licensed by examination to practice optometry in New York City and the fourth woman licensed in the State of New York. In 1915, Dr. Weinstein graduated from the American Institute of Optometry, becoming the third generation in her family to forge a career in applied optics. She began her practice at one of three family-owned optical shops in the Bronx, where she remained for more than 40 years, diligently serving the needs of her community’s most vulnerable members and tirelessly researching new techniques to improve care for the most difficult vision problems. During her career, she founded the Bronx County Optometric Society and organized the local Woman’s Auxiliary for the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as the New York state affiliate of the national organization. She was a founding member of the Bronx County Optometric Service, the first free optometry clinic in New York, and went on to expand the service to two additional locations. She also participated in professional women’s organizations, charitable foundations and civic clubs, and represented optometry at community events. Dr. Weinstein’s narrative is unique, but in many ways her family’s story was typical of many immigrants arriving in the U.S. during the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who were successful in improving their lot and passing on a professional legacy to the younger generation−and it is a story that is particularly common among optometry’s founders, and one that resonates in the first two decades of the twenty first century. The story of her career, and the personal details that serve as its backdrop, are also representative of the many challenges faced by the generation of professional women who helped establish the profession of optometry during the inter-war years. This biographical sketch, made possible through research in Minerva Weinstein Papers (MSS 501.4.11) held at the Archives & Museum of Optometry, sheds light on the tremendous debt optometry owes to its founding mothers and highlights the work that remains to complete the narrative of optometry history through new scholarship in hidden collections.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate if static retinoscopy has a higher correlation with monocular than binocular subjective refraction, and also to see if there is any difference between these results and Mohindra retinoscopy.

Methods: Retinoscopy and subjective refraction was performed on 32 adult subjects and the results from 29 of these were analysed.

Results: The statistical analyses showed that static retinoscopy has a higher correlation with monocular than binocular subjective refraction. Overall the correlation was high between all the refraction methods.

Conclusion: Static retinoscopy has a higher correlation with monocular than binocular subjective refraction in adults. Static and Mohindra retinoscopy are similar, and Mohindra retinoscopy is highly correlated with subjective refraction in adults.

Vall, Patrik. "Nearwork - a risk factor for overcorrectingpatients?" Thesis, University of Kalmar, School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hik:diva-2275.

Full text
Abstract:

Introduction: Research has shown that people become more myopic when performing nearwork. This phenomenon is called nearwork-induced transient myopia (NITM). Although this nearsightedness is temporary it is possible that it has an effect on individuals over time, causing permanent myopia, but from a more short-term and clinical point of view; can NITM have implications on the ordinary visual examination?

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate if prolonged nearwork can produce a change in the distance refraction significant enough to be measured with commonly occurring instrumentation used in clinics and if patients can be overcorrected because of this.

Methods: 23 emmetropic and myopic subjects with a mean age of 24 years were examined at two occasions; prior to and after approximately 2 hours of nearwork. The refraction was determined using a Topcon VT-10 manual phoropter and the end-point of refraction was defined using the duo-chrome test.

Results: When the data was averaged across all test subjects it revealed a statistically significant myopic refractive shift of 0.16 D. A subgroup analysis revealed an average myopic shift of 0.28 D in the myopic subjects (Student’s paired t-test; P < 0.05) and an average myopic shift of 0.05 D in the emmetropic subjects (Student’s paired t-test; P > 0.05).

Conclusion: Based on the data and results presented in this study and the results from earlier studies it is reasonable to say that there is a small risk that some patients could be overcorrected due to prolonged nearwork being performed prior to a visual examination.

Abstract:

Nilsson, Emelie. "Changes in the intraocular pressure value, when wearing orthokeratology lenses." Thesis, University of Kalmar, School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hik:diva-2280.

Full text
Abstract:

Introduction: Quite new on the Swedish market are orthokeratology lenses, used for both correction and myopia control. At the moment there are 22 practitioners in Sweden fitting orthokeratology lenses and 5 of those stands for 75 % of all fittings. Measuring the intraocular pressure in the eye is an important part of an eye- examination, because high intraocular pressure can result in glaucomatous changes. When using the orthokeratology lenses the corneal thickness changes, it decreases in the central epithelium and increases in the midperipheral stroma. The corneal thickness is affecting the intraocular pressure value.

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate how the intraocular pressure, measured with a non-contact tonometer, changes when using orthokeratology lenses.

Method: 7 people were fitted with orthokeratology lenses. The intraocular pressure was measured before using the lenses, after the first night, after the third night and after the seventh night. 12 eyes were measured after the tenth night, because of drop- out of two eyes.

Result: Already after the first night a significant decrease in the intraocular pressure occurred with 1, 34 mm Hg (p= 0,049). Day ten the intraocular pressure had an average decrease of 2, 67 ± 2, 14 mm Hg, which was a significant change (p= 0, 002 ).

Discussion: This study shows when wearing orthokeratology lenses a decrease in 2, 67 ± 2, 14 mm Hg at day 10 can be expected.

Abstract:

Nilsson, Ida. "Hur ackommodativ facilitetsträningpåverkar ackommodation, vergens och binokulärseende." Thesis, University of Kalmar, School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hik:diva-2283.

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, University of Kalmar, School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hik:diva-2289.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Doctors of Optometry and optometric students, interns, and residents are valuable members of the interprofessional team. Including both primary eye care and more specialized optometric care that can encompass elements of secondary and tertiary care in the collaborative care of patients ensures a holistic, whole-body approach to wellness and supports patients' quality of life. Doctors of Optometry play a vital role in ensuring optimal health throughout the lifespan, and in particular, for people with chronic conditions and complex health concerns. The authors explore examples of how optometrists participate in the healthcare team and describe how optometrists can make an impact for patients across the life span.
