Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Recent literature on Kant’s Opus postumum has typically focused on two parts of the drafts: the ether proofs and the Selbstsetzungslehre. Eckart Förster’s interpretation is representative of this tendency and, moreover, presents the Selbstsetzungslehre as the culmination of Kant’s late project. By contrast, I argue that the drafts of fascicles X/XI, written in between the ether proofs and the Selbstsetzungslehre, are of primary importance for understanding the Opus postumum. Through a close reading of a page from fascicle XI, I show that Kant attempts to resolve problems internal to the Selbstsetzungslehre and the ether proofs by presenting a transition from the former to the latter. I advocate a renewed appreciation of the centrality of fascicles X/XI, insofar as the Opus postumum drafts aspire to a science of transition.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this paper, I try to reveal the nature of the transition problem in Kant’s Opus Postumum. Scientific developments in eighteenth century, particularly the ones in chemistry, forces philosophers to re-evaluate the role of scientific findings in the philosophical debates. In addition to these crucial developments, we observe that the a prioricity for Kant primarily depends on the physical nature of the matter which implies moving forces, but the developments in chemistry add a new dimension to the problem. Once again, Kant, after the publication of the third Critique, starts to think about the possibility of a transition from The Metaphysical Foundation of Natural Science to physics. If we succeed to construct a proper transition, we not only save the sciences from being just aggregation of the empirical data, but we may fill the gap between the knowledge about the matter and the nature as a whole.

Abstract:
Few of Kant's doctrines are as difficult to understand as that of self-affection. Its brief career in the published literature consists principally in its unheralded introduction in the Transcendental Aesthetic and unexpected reappearance at a key moment in the Deduction chapter in the second (B) edition of the first Critique. After blazing its trail, self-affection retreats into the background, with a discussion befitting its importance occurring only in the unfinished Opus postumum. This step out of the limelight, however, belies the doctrine's continued importance for Kant; indeed, Kant seemed to think that in self-affection was to be found the key to the project that occupied him in his last years. Thus, ‘the possibility of the transition from the metaphysical foundations of natural science to physics does not consist in the fact that the subject is empirically affected but rather that it affects itself’ (Opus postumum, 22: 405). As he continued to struggle with this doctrine and with the pivot-point on which to work this vital transition, Kant himself would surely come to rue his confident statement in the B Deduction: ‘I do not see how one can find so many difficulties in the fact that inner sense is affected by ourselves’ (B156n).

Abstract:
Kant’s manuscripts of 1796–1803, which the Academic German edition of his works combined in 21–22 volumes of under the invented by H. Vaihinger name ‘Opus postumum’, still attract the attention of researchers. Was there really a significant theoretical “gap” in the system of Kant's “critical”, transcendental philosophy, which built by 1790, needed to be filled, namely, to undertake a conceptual "transition" from the already constructed a priori metaphysics of corporeal nature (metaphysical principles of natural science) to experimental mathematical physics, to the entire scientific empirical investigation of nature? In the last years of his life Kant tried to solve a problem that was really decisive for the fate of transcendentalism, which he had already realized in ‘Critique of Pure Reason’ and concretized in ‘Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science’, however he found himself in a hopeless situation, which doomed him to the “Tantalus’ torments”. The problem that he was constantly thinking about necessarily arises in the system of transcendental philosophy, but has no solution in it. ‘Opus postumum’ is an important piece of evidence on the insurmountable difficulties faced by the attempt to “save” philosophy as a perfect and complete system of absolutely reliable, "apodictic" science, based on the idea of universal and necessary conditions for the experience possibility.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The principal aim of this work is to provide a systematic interpretation of the Kantian theory of space. It is important to note that such an interpretation has to account for the fact that, in Kantřs works, we seem to find two different concepts of space. Firstly there are propositions concerning space as a mere form of outer sense. But secondly, we also find Kant speaking about space as itself an object of experience that can be sensed. This double discourse on space authorises to oppose what I call material space to space as a pure form. Therefore, in aiming at a systematic account of Kantian space, we shouldnřt limit ourselves to the study of the transcendental Aesthetics. I show that it is possible to provide an analysis of the metaphysical exposition of space that is combinable with that which the Opus postumum teaches us about material space. The argument of the work contains three principal theses: Inside the first Critique, there is an asymmetrical relationship between the foundation of transcendental idealism and empirical realism. Certain later reflections in the Opus postumum show that this asymmetry is problematic for the project of a transcendental philosophy as a system. The result of the metaphysical exposition of space can be interpreted in two ways, but only one of them has been developed by Kant in the first Critique. At the end, the work offers what I call a Kantian system of the possible interpretations of space, for which the Kantian table of nothing figures as a template. This system allows an a priori understanding of the generation of a Newtonian, Leibnizian and finally a Kantian conception of space

Abstract:
Part one of this work contains a critical discussion of Immanuel Kant's transcendental moral philosophy, which can be considered to represent the attempt to establish morale on purely rational resp. cognitive structures. In part two of this work, this purely intellectual morale is compared to a human morale or ethic understanding which is based upon empirical investigations from different fields. It hereby becomes clear that human morality is no abstract construction but rather a real, describable phenomenon which, although it is not innate, does nonetheless correlate to the „nature“ of man in its schooling and development
