Sour oranges (Citrus aurantium L.) are well known in the processing and cosmetics industries for the aromatic properties of their essential oils. Intercultivar genetic and aromatic diversity is not well documented. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of morphological selection and genetic mechanisms of varietal diversification (mutation or hybridization) on the aromatic and odor variability of sour orange essential oils. Forty-five sour orange accessions from INRAE-CIRAD citrus Biological Resources Center (France) were assessed for ten simple sequence repeat (SSR) and 54 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, nine morphochemical fruit traits and with the aromatic components of leaf and peel essential oils. Thirty-nine sour oranges displayed no intercultivar molecular polymorphism and six genotypes originated from interspecific hybridizations involving sour orange, citron, pummelo or mandarin. The peel essential oil (PEO) diversity was low, in accordance with the genetic diversity. The predominance of limonene (>90%) prevents any possible correlation to be made between the composition and the variation in sensory profiles detected by panelists. Few compounds in the leaf essential oil (LEO), such as linalool, linalyl acetate, α-terpineol and geraniol were significantly different across sour oranges varieties. The morphological fruit attributes mainly used in varietal selection differed highly across the main genetically identical group of sour orange accessions. These results confirm that mutation can generate variability in aromatic compounds and aromas and that their exploitation requires an improvement in characterization processes.

Since the late 1970s several epidemiological studies have appeared linking exposure to phenoxy herbicides or chlorophenols to some malignant tumors. Most of these compounds are contaminated with dioxins and dibenzofurans; for example, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- p-dioxin (TCDD) is a contaminant of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), a component of Agent Orange which was sprayed in Vietnam during the war. The results of some of the epidemiological studies on cancer risks associated with exposure to these compounds have been manipulated and misinterpreted, particularly by the Australian Royal Commission on the Use and Effects of Chemical Agents on Australian Personnel in Vietnam. Furthermore, a book on Australian war history entitled Medicine at War, commissioned by the Federal Government, reiterates several of these misinterpretations, despite available contrary evaluations from Australian and U.S. authorities. These remarkable and confusing circumstances in the scientific process are considered also in the light of the recent classification of TCDD as carcinogenic to humans, Group 1, by a Working Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France.

Yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) is an annual invasive weed in the United States with Mediterranean origins. The expense of chemical control and the vast area of invasion make this weed an appropriate target for classical biological control. Observations of a field site in southern France revealed small orange galls on the leaves of yellow starthistle seedlings caused by the fungus Synchytrium solstitiale. Inoculation of yellow starthistle seedlings with a suspension of zoospores released from infected tissue resulted in infection. Ten days after inoculation, typical orange galls appeared on the exposed tissue. Preliminary host range testing showed up to 100% infection of C. solstitialis seedlings from both France and the United States and infection of Carthamus tinctorius, Centaurea americana, C. diffusa, C. rothrockii, C. squarrosa, and Helianthus annuus seedlings. No symptoms were observed on seedlings of Centaurea calcitrapa, C. maculosa, C. sulfurea, Cirsium californica, C. occidentale, Cynera cardunculus, and Taraxacum officinale. Zoospores were released in a pH range between 4.45 and 8.25 and optimally at temperatures between 5 and 15°C. Infection of yellow starthistle seedlings occurred after a minimum 1-h exposure to a zoospore suspension at 20°C.

«Orange Alternative program texts and French surrealism manifestos » are a contribution to a detailed analysis of the Orange Alternative program texts in terms of surreal inspirations, many of which can be found not only in the Manifesto of Surrealist Socialism, but in Waldemar Fydrych’s books: Hokus pokus, or the Orange Alternative, written together with with Bogdan Dobosz in 1989. Żywoty Mężów Orangeowych- 2001, Krasnoludki i gamonie- 2006, Major- 2013. The author analyzes various levels of relations between the most important assumptions of the French surrealism contained in the manifestos and the program texts and literary works of Waldemar «Major» Fydrych, taking into account his ties with France. He mentions selected contexts of the activity of the New Culture Movement and the Orange Alternative, referring to the meaning of the characters, ideas and program content. He does not forget about the role of manifestos in the history of the European avant-garde (including the Manifesto of the Communist Party, but futuristic and Dadaist) and the universal dimension of the high-profi le slogans of surrealism, both in Europe and in Poland. He evokes the notion of «socio-political surrealism» and its universal dimension, as well as situates the actions of the Orange Alternative between Solidarity and the authorities of the time.

The South African War, also known as the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, was one of the most important armed conflicts of the age of imperialism. The war evoked an immense public response in Russia; not even the power circles remained unmoved. Russian public opinion supported the struggle for the independence of the Boer republics, the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. For their part, the governments of the two republics convinced their fellow citizens that the Russian Empire, as the initiator of the Hague Peace Conference and the only great power that never had colonies in Africa, would be able to unite other states of Europe and the United States to help the Boers in countering British imperialism. By June 1900, it had become clear that the Great Powers would not take military action in defence of the South African republics. Moreover, they were unable to overlook their geopolitical differences in order to offer collective mediation or good offices to the belligerents. On behalf of the official Boer delegation, who was visiting the United States, the Transvaal envoy conveyed to the foreign offices of Russia and its ally France a request for a joint protectorate over the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. Documentary evidence of this demarche, which has not yet received sufficient coverage in historiography, has been preserved in the archive of the Transvaal envoy Leyds, as well as in the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire. Appealing to Russia and France, the Boer delegates assumed that these powers, for humanitarian reasons, would provide friendly guardianship to the two republics in South Africa. However, the European governments of the period understood protectorate as a form of colonial dependence. Besides, Russia and France did not want a military confrontation with the mighty British Empire for the sake of the Boer states that were outside the sphere of their political and colonial interests. The attempt of the representatives of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State to secure a Russo-French protectorate for their republics was predestined to fail.

De 1990 à 1996, les télécommunications françaises sont passées successivement d'administration d'État à entreprise publique et enfin à société anonyme. Cette évolution s'inscrit dans un mouvement global et européen de déréglementation du secteur des télécommunications. L'objet de cette thèse est de comprendre le processus de ce que l'on peut désormais appeler une privatisation d'une administration d'État en l'espace de moins de dix ans et les effets de cette évolution sur le système de relations professionnelles. La première partie rend compte de l'histoire organisationnelle des télécommunications caractérisée par une relation spécifique et originale de l'État à son administration. La rupture de plus en plus profonde mais pas encore définitive aboutira dans les années 1990 à l'apparition et à la progression d'une logique " marchande " et contractuelle, laissant une place de plus en plus marginale à la logique statutaire traditionnelle. La deuxième partie abordera la question de cette évolution et de ses effets sur le statut individuel des agents et plus précisément sur le sens qu'accordent désormais les personnels de France Télécom à la notion de statut de fonctionnaire et de service public. La dernière partie permettra de rassembler et de mettre en perspective les positionnements des trois composantes du dialogue social - direction, syndicats et personnel - et de montrer, en s'appuyant sur la théorie de la régulation conjointe de Jean-Daniel Reynaud, que l'ancien compromis social autrefois en vigueur aux Télécoms est aujourd'hui fortement déstabilisé. From a State administration it became a firm with a mission of public service (" entreprise publique ") and was eventually turned into a simple registred firm. This evolution is part of a global and european trend of deregulation in the realm of communications. This PhD aims to understand what might be called the privatisation of a State administration, and the way it affected the professional relationships. Its first part recounts the organizational history of the communication network, caracterized by a very specific and peculiar relation between the State and its administration. The increasing, yet not definite gap between them led, in the 90's, to the emergence and the progression of a " tradeable " and contractive logic which replaced and marginalized the former " statutory " logic. Its second part deals with the question of this evolution and the way it affected the status of the France Telecom employees, focussing on the new meaning that these employees gave to notions such as " State employees' status " and " public services ". Its last part aims to put together and to question the positions of the three categories of people - the executives, the trade-unions and the employees - involved in the so-called "social negociation". Using Jean-Daniel Reynaud's theory of the " common regulation ", it shows that the former organisation of social relations in France Telecom is currently strongly destabilized. Instead rises a new confrontation between, on the one-hand the trade-unions, both representing the majority of the employees and involved in the fight to secure their former status, and on the other hand executives trying to promote the idea that the employees' status should now be based on a mere contract

Cette recherche montre les limites et les risques inhérents au processus de communication mis en place, en particulier chez Orange France avant la crise sociale de 2009. Elle s’intéresse au concept de mobilité et à la façon dont les entreprises s’en sont emparées pour construire une véritable doxa au service de leurs politiques. Un travail d’aller-retour entre l’analyse des écrits institutionnels et la parole des cadres, met en lumière les procédés argumentatifs, narratifs et sémiotiques mobilisés. Les conclusions de ce travail réinterrogent la notion d’éthique relationnelle dans la conduite du changement en entrepriseThe uncertainty of economic environment and competitive pressure put the issue of mobility at the center of HR concerns in major companies. This work consists in analyzing the effects of managerial communication, applied to mobility, on the building of managers identity. La science-fiction est un élément important dans l’élaboration des stratégies des grandes entreprises, notamment technologiques et de télécommunication. Cette thèse repose sur une enquête de terrain de plus de trois ans au sein des Orange Labs, et plus précisément dans les projets de réalité virtuelle de France Télécom R&D. L’objectif était de déterminer les différentes modalités d’utilisation de la science-fiction par les chercheurs, ingénieurs,scientifiques et managers de l’entreprise. Il en ressort, après plusieurs interviews dont les vingt plus importantes sont reportées en annexes, que la science-fiction est filtrée par l’entreprise pour inspirer les décideurs. Une idéologie de la science-fiction contribue à structurer le discours stratégique de l’entreprise, qui peut ainsi diffuser son discours auprès des marchés et de ses employés. Par ailleurs, un philtrage science-fictionnel, c’est-à-dire la création d’un philtre visant à charmer les acteurs et reposant sur la science-fiction structure la stratégie de l’entreprise. La science-fiction, notamment cyberpunk, a beaucoup contribué à diffuser des représentations de technologies utopiques auprès des ingénieurs et des managers qui ont investi pour réaliser ces visions. La science-fiction constitue aussi une culture commune aux décideurs du capitalisme global. Elle a beaucoup contribué à structurer les visions innovantes en proposant des fictions avant-gardistes aux innovateurs durant le vingtième siècle. This thesis in funded on a study of more than three years in the Orange Labs, and more precisely in the virtual reality projects. The aim was to determine the different modalities of utilization of science fiction by researchers, engineers, scientists and managers of the company. Several interviews have been established. The twenty most important are in annexes. Science fiction is filtered by the company to inspire leaders. An ideology of science fiction contributes to structure the strategic discourse of the company that can diffuse its discourse to employees and markets. Moreover, a science fictional philter, that is to say the creation of a philter aiming to charm actors and founded on science fiction contributes to structure the strategy of the company. Cyberpunk science fiction has contributed a lot to diffuse the representations of utopian technologies to managers who have invested to realize these visions. Science fiction constitutes too a common culture of leaders of global capitalism. It has participated a lot to structure innovative visions by proposing avant-gardist visions to innovators during the twentieth century. Le taylorisme a tellement bien su diviser le travail , que l'utopie de la transversalité pose la question inverse : comment mieux coordonner ? L'ambition est de trouver une alternative à l'organisation bureaucratique. L'administration France Télécom devient entreprise de droit privé entre 1990 et 1998. L'organisation évolue en même temps avec la création de processus permettant de suivre l'activité horizontalement. Ceux-ci ont vocation à structurer les activités nécessaires aux clients et situées dans des fonctions différentes. On élargit ainsi la performance en passant du produit au service. Mais cette révolution fait que les besoins des clients ont, en retour, un impact sur l'organisation. Point décisif car l'entreprise a maintenant une finalité externe contraignante. Les unités, les départements, le personnel, les compétences, se retrouvent alors en position de ressources. Et si la contribution fournie n'est pas celle souhaitée, c'est leur existence qui est en jeu, et à terme l'emploi.

Cette these consacree aux entreprises de reseau et, plus particulierement, a france telecom, analyse les effets de l'ouverture a la concurrence sur les performances et les modes d'allocation des ressources. Au modele traditionnel des performances fonde sur la fourniture d'un produit unique (telephone) et offert en quantite, selon les principes propres au service public dans un contexte de monopole, correspond un mode + administre ; d'allocation. L'introduction de la concurrence et les transformations technologiques modifient l'offre des telecommunications autour d'une multiplicite de produits et de services relevant de la variete et de l'adaptabilite. Les dimensions marchandes et relationnelles s'accentuent dans le nouveau modele des performances en emergence. Ce dernier se caracterise par des +tensions; traduisant la perennite des performances traditionnelles et la complexite des nouvelles. L'analyse du nouveau modele des performances permet d'identifier les elements de crise du mode +administre; d'allocation. Les dysfonctionnements conduisent france telecom a engager des reformes. Les premieres vont dans le sens de la decentralisation et de la contractualisation. L'analyse theorique de ces deux notions a permis de montrer que leur contenu pouvait etre multiple et rendre compte de realites differentes. La distinction etablie entre la decentralisation hierarchique et la decentralisation participative et l'elaboration d'une typologie des differentes formes contractuelles permettent d'analyser les difficultes de mise en place d'un nouveau mode d'allocation des ressourcesThis thesis focuses on the networking enterprises, and, more particulary, to france telecom. It analyses how output and resource allocation methods are affected by exposure to competition. The particular model traditionnally used is one of administered resource allocation usually based on a single product model produced and offers in quantity, with a context which is specific to the principle of service public in he framework of a monopoly. La the telecommunication field both the scale and variety of product is extensive as is rapid technological change permanent allow which added to the exposure to competition presents a need for a new growth model based on variety and adaptability which raises +tensions ; reflecting the merging of the need for managing the complexity of the new with the durability of the elements of the old model. The + administered ; model of resource allocation is contrasted with the new model of output allowing the identification of the critical dysfonctional aspects of the old model. The response is to decentralize and subcontract. These two concepts are analysed theorically to show that their termes of reference are varied which then need the resulting complex of new realities to be addressed. Analyses of types decentralization and subcontracting which establish the distinction between hierarchical decentralization and participative decentralization are undertaken. When cross referenced with the typologies of different contractual forms which have also been developed the two analysed features taken together allow for a more lucid examination of the difficulties of putting the new resource allocation methods into operation

À quelles règles financières, comptables et fiscales faudrait-il soumettre la gestion de services publics dont l'activité s'apparente à celle des entreprises privées? Telle est la problématique du régime financier de la poste et France télécom. Le régime de budget annexe, adopté en 1923, a donné au service des PTT une insuffisante souplesse de gestion. Sous la pression de la concurrence et de la règlementation européenne, la réforme de 1990 institue le statut sui generis d'exploitant public qui cache en fait celui d'établissement public industriel et commercial. De même la gestion de la poste et de France télécom est désormais régie par les règles du droit commun. Toutefois, le nouveau régime financier souffre du maintien d'éléments du régime précèdent tels que le personnel majoritairement fonctionnaire, l'exercice de divers contrôles et la contribution à certaines charges de l'état. Aussi, avec la transformation de France télécom en société anonyme et l'ouverture de son capital au public, ce régime semble n'avoir été conçu que comme transitoireTTo which financial, accountant and fiscal rules could be bound the management of public utility undertaking whose activities look like those of private undertaking? Thats the main question of the financial regime of la poste and france telecom. Adopted in 1923, the annex budget system gave to the post and telecommunications administration an insufficient flexibility management. Under the competition and the european regulation presure, the 1990's reform established a statute of "exploitant public". This reform hides, in fact, the statute of commercial and industrial public enterprise. In the same way, the management of la poste and france telecom is now governed by the rules of common law. However, the new financial regime endure the keeping of some elements of the former regime as the staff situation as civil servant, the practice of varieted inspections and the contribution to some public offices. So, whit the conversion of france telecom to a limited company and the opening of its capital to investor, this regime seems to have been conceived as a transitory system

Les amphitheatres d'arles, de nimes, les theatres d'arles, d'orange, la maison carree de nimes et le temple d'auguste et de livie de vienne connurent des destinees paralleles. Construits entre le 1er siecle avant et le 1er siecle apres j. C. . Ils presentent des similitudes et des complementarites architecturales et subirent les memes vicissitudes jusqu'au debut du xixe siecle. Ils susciterent des le xvie siecle, l'interet des antiquaires, des voyageurs et des architectes dont temoigne une production ecrite et illustree abondante. Entre modele architectural et preuve historique, leur valeur est complexe. Le besoin de memoire evolua en devoir collectif de sauvegarde de la conservation intellectuelle d'une trace d'un passe illustre a l'action concrete de sauvegarde. Au xixe siecle, la mise en place de la conservation monumentale s'inscrit dans l'elaboration d'une legitimation administrative. De l'inventaire des richesses architecturales a la protection, un cadre reglementaire constitue de circulaires et de textes de loi s'instaura reposant sur un appareil administratif developpe (instances consultatives telles que l'academie des inscriptions et belles lettres, le conseil des batiments civils et la commission des monuments historiques et autorites departementales et municipales). Une doctrine de la restauration fut des lors elaboree. Les principes emis s'enoncaient autour de deux themes fondamentaux (respect de l'architecture antique et la question de la lisibilite de l'intervention). La mise en uvre de la sauvegarde se developpait en trois temps : le degagement (demolition des structures parasites), la restauration (de la consolidation a la reconstruction) et l'integration dans la ville (reutilisation et mise en scene urbaine). Cette conservation des edifices antiques du midi de la france requerait une formidable synergie (moyens financiers, efforts sur la reflexion theorique et son adequation aux travaux entrepris sur les chantiers a arles, nimes, orange et vienne).

L'@introduction de l'ARTT chez France Telecom à partir de 1997 a eu comme objectif de fournir les moyens à la mise en place d'une nouvelle organisation du temps de travail. En nous positionnant sur une approche peu commune dès lors que l'on traite de l'ARTT, nous avons souhaité observer, comprendre et analyser les effets que ce changement organisationnel pouvait avoir sur les conditions de vie au travail et hors travail des salariés. Cette recherche adopte un positionnement théorique issu de la psychologie du travail et la stratégie de recherche des "récits de vie" dans une perspective longitudinale. Avec ces outils, nous avons tenté d'appréhender une réalité de vécus parfois très complexes et avec un degré de finesse particulier. Les résultats de la recherche articulés autour de trois pôles (analyse thématique, analyse typologique, analyse lexicale), montrent que les effets de l'ARTT sur les conditions de vie au travail et hors travail des salariés sont globalement négatifs. Ils apparaissent très contrastés, variant fortement selon les individus, les caractéristiques qui leur sont propres et leur approche au temps. La typologie constitue un outil qui pourra être utilisé par les gestionnaire afin d'anticiper à l'avance ou de mieux saisir les réactions, positionnements et vécus de personnes vivant ou devant expérimenter une formule d'ARTT. L'ARTT met en oeuvre un processus de regard nouveau sur l'organisation et les individus qui la composent. En passant d'une considération globale de la gestion des horaires de travail à une approche plus individualisée, on introduit de nouvelles dimensions dans le champ d'étude qu'est la GRH. L'ARTT touche à la perception de chaque individu au temps, à ses rythmes personnels, à des dimentions familiales, sociales, géographiques nouvelles. De ce fait, on observe une atomisation des comportements et une nouvelle segmentation des ressources humaines qui rompt avec les repères traditionnels de la GRH.

Autrement dit, le rapport spécifique qui liait les usagers à la notion historique de service public s'est-il dissout dans une relation de consommation ordinaire ? En partant du cas de France Télécom mis à l'épreuve de la dérèglementation, de la privatisation partielle et de l'ouverture à la concurrence, la recherche analyse les différentes rationalités qui sont à l'origine des comportements de fidélité, de défection et de protestation des usagers. Bien qu'elle ne conteste pas la réalité de la transformation des rapports entre services publics et usagers, la recherche montre que l'on a affaire à un processus plus complexe de changement qui ne se résume pas à la simple substitution du consommateur à l'usager. Non seulement les nouveaux usagers continuent à se référer à certains aspects du service public, mais, ce faisant, ils donnent une nouvelle signification à leurs comportements de consommationWe are interested to know if it is true that public service users are now ordinary consumers. Has the specific link between users and historical model of public utility disappeared and this relation became a usual consumption ? Based on a case-study concerning France Telecom, a company confronted to deregulation, privatization and opening to competition, this research analyses different rationalities : users' loyalty, defection and voice. Even if we can notice evolutions about relations between public utility and users, the results show that the model of consumer did not disappear for a user of public utility. The new users still refer to some aspects of the public utility. Moreover they give a new significance to their behaviour of consumption

Chapter four examines the suicide crisis at France Télécom, situating this in the shift to a new finance-driven management model, following the company’s privatisation, whereby the search for shareholder value became the overarching strategic goal of the company. I draw on scholarship on financialisation and in particular, the rise of shareholder value, examining its impact on the changing status and conditions of labour. Suicides were not an aberration in an otherwise smooth-functioning system, but the consequence of systemic processes that sought to remove labour from the workplace as an obstacle to extraneous financial goals. The chapter examines the structural transformations of the company which transformed the perceived value of the individual worker and considers the new expulsionary management tactics that characterised the Next restructuring plan. The chapter draws on testimonial material, including suicide letters and witness statements drawn from a legal case taken by a work inspector against the company in 2010 which culminated in the recent criminal trial against the company’s former bosses. An analysis of this testimonial material allows us to reconstruct the causal connections that link structural transformations in the company to the acute suffering that triggered an act of self-killing.

The sixth chapter likens the Haitian Revolution to a cockfight and begins to question Toussaint Louverture’s uses of power. By January 26, 1801 Toussaint has become the dominant cock, largely due to his huge political organization in the Northern provinces. A hint of reproach echoes in the discourse of narrator Grinn Prominnin because of the unacknowledged debt owed by Toussaint to the masses of formerly enslaved people who participated in the Revolution. At this point the black rebels were often insufficiently armed or were pitted against one another. Some fought for personal interests, others on more general terms; the result was a weakened position. Their advantage lay in their sheer numbers and common determination to become free. In 1793 Toussaint tapped into this energy by declaring the goal of universal freedom and liberty for Saint-Domingue, a political and tactical move that assured the former enslaved people’s loyalty to him. Once his organization solidified, he allied himself with French forces, against the Spanish and British (on whose side other rebel leaders were fighting). By 1795, Spain was defeated, and Saint-Domingue was controlled by three sectors: the new French political commissioner (Lavaud), the freedmen (Vilatte, Beauvais, and Rigaud), and Toussaint’s army. Major contradictions—economic, political, and military—divided the masses from the leaders in the latter group; often the former enslaved people were forced to work the land for the benefit of the revolutionary generals. Meanwhile, both inside and outside of Saint-Domingue, people began to distrust the paper money issued by the revolutionary state, and its value decreased. The war in the South took form, with Toussaint positioned against Rigaud. France’s third civil commissioner, Sonthonax, arrived in 1796 and was determined to crush the British and the mulatto generals’ troops. Sonthonax named Toussaint the leading general and Rigaud an outlaw. But Toussaint had Sonthonax expelled from Saint-Domingue the following year due to their several disagreements (including the fact that Sonthonax promoted Moyse Louverture to the rank of general, passing over several other leaders in Toussaint’s army). Meanwhile, in France, the political situation was becoming more conservative, and Toussaint feared that the former colonists would return to seize their property. In a dog-eat-dog society, every class has economic, political, and ideological interests; the freedmen and newly freed slaves were at odds. Toussaint subsequently repulsed Hédouville (who was sent by France as an agent of the Directory, charged with implementing reforms) and fought a vicious war in the South against Rigaud, the dominant mulatto general, thus deepening the racial divisions in the general population. Although Rigaud took a racial approach himself, Toussaint’s demagogy encouraged this social poison to pit the masses of formerly enslaved people against the mixed-race people, a problem reflecting Haiti’s hereditary ideological disease. Toussaint’s primary interests were commerce, money and the trappings of power. So intent was Toussaint on keeping Saint-Domingue afloat economically that he imposed strictures on the formerly enslaved people through a “rural work code,” forcing them to either remain on the same plantations where they had previously toiled or face severe punishment (including death). The idea of “freedom for all” thus began to lose its meaning. England and the United States began to exert pressure on Saint-Domingue as well. Before the War of the South between Toussaint and Rigaud, blacks and mixed-race people were allied against France, but afterwards each group sought its own type of Haitian independence. The beginning of the end of Toussaint’s power came about when the rebel leader fell into the Rigaud’s trap in the afè Koray [Corail Affair]; he nevertheless continued to fight for several more years. Toussaint’s leadership style moved to demagogy, and after 1799, plots mushroomed everywhere against him. The other rebel general, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, did not play upon social tensions in the same way that Toussaint did: instead of using race as a wedge issue, he allowed a group of mixed race people to join the rebel army, which raised everyone’s spirits and frightened the enemy. Toussaint’s organization was closer to the interests of the masses than Rigaud’s. With Dessalines, he convinced several maroon groups to fight against Rigaud; Dessalines won the South soon afterwards. The war of the South helped advance the larger revolution in Saint-Domingue. Once Rigaud was defeated, Toussaint was the only serious cock in the former colony. Freedom for everyone was the main interest of his organization, and he unified the country around it; Dessalines and Pétion ultimately worked together to help repulse Leclerc’s invasion of 1802. The freedmen’s advantage was blunted before they could take advantage of others. The former slaves grew stronger as a result. Despite Toussaint’s demagogy, the revolution was holding strong; though Toussaint still occupied a position of authority, there remained many contradictions in his camp.

Usually, the most efficient photocatalyst materials are synthesized as fine nanocrystalline powders and this rises significant handling and repetitive application issues. More recently, researchers started to immobilize photocatalyst (nano)materials on relatively large low density supports creating floating photocatalyst particles. Such approach allows to effectively retrieve and re-apply the used photocatalyst material. In current study we used reactive magnetron sputtering technique and deposited unconventional orange colour nanocrystalline ZnO based photocatalyst on floating high-density polyethylene (HDPE) grains. The structure of the synthesized photocatalyst was characterized by XRD, SEM, and XPS techniques. The repetitive measurements of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye bleaching by the ZnO based photocatalyst film under visible light irradiation showed high stability over ten cycles. Visible light induced photocatalytic efficiency of the floating photocatalyst grains (FPG) was also estimated by the repetitive treatment of water samples containing Salmonella typhimurium (strain SL1344) and Micrococcus luteus bacteria, as well as water samples containing PRD1 and T4 bacteriophages. These tests indicated complex interaction between the bacteria, viruses, photocatalyst and its HDPE support. For example, they revealed that FPGs lose most of its photocatalytic efficiency in just 3 cycles. To stabilize the ZnO based FPGs and enhance its photocatalytic efficiency under the visible light irradiation, before the depositing of ZnO films we pre-covered HDPE grains by Ni underlayer. The addition of Ni resulted in mixed results – Ni underlayer reduced the efficiency of S. typhimurium disinfection during the first cycle but increased the efficiency and detoxication stability over consecutive tests using the same set of FPGs.

Introduction : Les Chirurgiens-dentistes (CD) ont pour rôle d’identifier et de diagnostiquer les pathologies de la muqueuse orale (PMO), de les prendre en charge ou d’orienter les patients vers les spécialistes adéquats. Une importante errance diagnostique des patients atteints de PMO a été mise en évidence, pouvant être à l’origine d’une perte de chance notamment dans les cas de carcinomes épidermödes ou d’hémopathies malignes (Scully et al 1999, Albisetti et al, 2016). Ce constat s’accompagne d’études internationales portant sur le comportement des CD face aux PMO (Ergun et al 2009, Sardella et al, 2007), analysant les difficultés rencontrées et mettant en évidence un manque de connaissance que les praticiens attribuent à une formation universitaire insuffisante, mais également à un manque d’intérêt face aux PMO. Compte tenu de l’absence de données francaises, nous avons souhaité estimer la capacité des CD exercant en France, à identifier, diagnostiquer et prendre en charge les PMO. Méthode - Nous avons réalisé en collaboration avec l’UFSBD (Union Francaise pour la Santé Bucco-Dentaire), une enquête nationale par questionnaire qui comprenait des items sur le diagnostic et la prise en charge des PMO. Sa diffusion s’est faite en ligne du 19 mai au 13 juillet 2017, 15 000 adhérents ont été sollicités. Résultats - Le taux de réponses obtenu a été de 3.8 %, majoritairement des praticiens libéraux d’Ile de France, ayant en moyenne 20 ans d’exercice. Plus de 80% d’entre eux avaient participé à un congrès dans les 5 dernières années et 41% de ces formations concernaient les PMO. En revanche, les jeunes diplômés étaient moins nombreux à suivre ces formations. La quasi-totalité des praticiens (97%) déclarait observer des lésions. Une majorité (65.5%) effectuait un examen complet de la cavité orale lors de la 1èreconsultation, mais seulement 30% à chaque rendez-vous de suivi. Les CD déclaraient ne pas avoir de difficultés globales importantes à diagnostiquer et prendre en charge les lésions orales. Des différences significatives ont été notées selon les pathologies considérées et les caractéristiques du praticien : sexe, année de diplôme, mode d’exercice ou encore formations continues suivies ces 5 dernières années. La majorité des CD (77%) expliquait leurs difficultés diagnostiques par un manque de patients présentant ce type de pathologies, 2/3 par un manque de confiance en leur diagnostic et leur connaissance sur ce thème et la moitié par une formation insuffisante. Conclusion - Notre enquête, a révélé des difficultés similaires à celles internationales : pas de réalisation systématique d’un examen oral complet, des difficultés élevées pour le diagnostic des carcinomes épidermödes, ce qui est inquiétant compte tenu du rôle des CD dans le dépistage des lésions. La mise en place de réseaux de soins facilitant la communication entre les différents acteurs de santé, spécialistes des lésions orales et praticiens libéraux, permettrait d’accélérer la prise en charge multidisciplinaire des patients et ainsi améliorerait le pronostic de certaines pathologies.

Assessing the number of users defined by a set of specific usage attributes in a given usage contextual situation is not always an obvious task in a market segmentation process. Although new approaches in design and marketing seem to be more sensitive to the adequacy of a design concept with the usage scenarios, these methods do not systematically consider the various usage situations. The present article puts forward a methodology intending to build a usage scenarios space in which the input data is thoroughly collected and validated. This methodology is applied to the complex and multifactorial issue of falls among the elderly in the Metropolitan France. In this paper, numerous medical publications have been made to study influential factors of fall situations. However, even solution providers for fall prevention and teleassistance ignore the real situational coverage of their solutions. As a result, “usage scenarios space” is built using an appropriate segmentation of usage contexts (here, fall situations) and user characteristics. These data are used for a design oracle to predict (simulate) the various and multiple usage scenarios.

Objectif : Caractériser l’os maxillaire postérieur chez l’adulte d’un point de vue géométrique pour obtenir des modèles numériques standards par éléments finis. Matériel et méthodes : Les images CBCT maxillaires des patients qui ont visité le service de Chirurgie Orale du CHU de La Timone à Marseille, France ont été recueillies au cours de l’année 2016. Les sujets inclus devaient être âgés de plus de 21 ans et être édentés au moins à partir de la première prémolaire maxillaire. Les patients atteints d’une pathologie osseuse ou d’un traitement influençant le remodelage osseux n’ont pas été inclus. La zone maxillaire postérieure a été définie pour chaque CBCT et 6 mesures de hauteur et de largeur de la crête alvéolaire ont été réalisées à l’aide d’une méthode anthropométrique. Une étude Gauge Anova R&R avec analyse de la répétabilité et de la reproductibilité de la variance des mesures, ainsi qu’une analyse en composantes principales (ACP) pour isoler des modèles standards, ont été menées. Les modèles 3D ont été réalisés à partir d’images au format DICOM. Résultats : Le CBCT de 100 hommes et 100 femmes ont été retenus dans notre étude. 1200 mesures de crête alvéolaire ont été réalisée et les valeurs moyennes de hauteur et de largeur des différentes parties de la zone maxillaire postérieure étaient très disparates. L’analyse statistique de variance a validé la répétabilité et la reproductibilité de notre protocole de mesures. L’ACP n’a pas permis d’identifier les modèles standards et ceux- ci ont été modélisés à partir de notre base de données. Conclusion : Notre travail est le premier à considérer des paramètres anthropométriques sur un large échantillon de sujets dans la méthode des éléments finis. Nous mettons ainsi en évidence la perspective de réaliser des modèles anatomiques complexes et réalistes à partir de l’anatomie humaine pour réaliser des tests biomécaniques en implantologie orale.

Introduction : Actuellement 208 millions de personnes consomment du tabac en Europe dont 12 millions en France. 650 000 décès sont attribuables au tabac en Europe et environ 60 000 décès par an sont imputables à cette consommation en France, ce qui en fait la première cause de décès évitable. Tous les acteurs de santé devraient être mobilisés pour lutter contre ce fléau. Le chirurgien dentiste doit se sentir concerné car il s’agit d’un enjeu général de santé publique mais aussi spécifique de santé bucco-dentaire. En effet le tabac est l’étiologie principale de certaines maladies graves de la muqueuse buccale : carcinomes épidermoïdes, leucoplasies, carcinome verruqueux (1). Le tabac est aussi un cofacteur favorisant les maladies parodontales (2). Enfin la consommation de tabac perturbe la cicatrisation après les actes de Chirurgie Orale et c’est une contre indication relative aux interventions chirurgie implantaire. Malgré ce constat, les chirurgiens dentistes restent peu impliqués dans l’accompagnement du sevrage tabagique (3). Les raisons sont probablement liées à un manque de formation et de connaissances qui limitent la mise en oeuvre du sevrage tabagique auprès de leurs patients. Pour pallier ce manque, un projet européen a été mis en place grâce à un financement du programme ERASMUS + (4). L’objectif de ce projet est de former les professionnels de santé européens au sevrage tabagique grâce à plusieurs outils. Matériels et Méthodes : Le principal outil de formation sera un site internet diffusé en langue Anglaise, Française, Italienne, Portugaise, et Espagnole. Ce site permettra de fournir un outil d’e-learning afin de promouvoir l’implication des professionnels de santé et notamment des chirurgiens dentistes dans le sevrage tabagique. Par ailleurs, un livre téléchargeable reprenant le contenu du site internet sera également diffusé. Enfin, plusieurs actions de diffusion de l’information seront menées tout au long du projet au travers de communications lors de congrès scientifiques et d’articles dans des revues professionnelles. Résultats : Le site et le livre électronique sont accessibles gratuitement à partir du lien : http://smokingcessationtraining.com/ en/home/ en langue anglaise. La version française sera publiée en ligne dans le premier semestre 2018. Le site a été réalisé sous la coordination de Rui Albuquerque (Birmingham Dental Hospital UK) avec la collaboration de Ross Keat (Birmingham Dental Hospital UK), Jean-Christophe Fricain et Sylvain Catros (Université de Bordeaux, France), Marcio Diniz Freitas (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela Espagne), Luis Monteiro (Universitaério de Ciências da Sauéde Portugal), Giovanni Lodi (Universita di Milano, Italy). Conclusions : Ce projet devrait permettre d’augmenter le niveau de compétence des utilisateurs et un certificat sera délivré à ceux qui complèteront l’évaluation en ligne. Ce projet devrait permettre d’avoir un impact éducatif en formant les chirurgiens dentistes, un impact sur la santé des patients et un impact économique en réduisant les couts sociétaux induits par le tabagisme.

Introduction: La prise en charge des collections circonscrites aiguës suppurées d’origine dentaire (CCASD) implique un drainage, le traitement de la dent causale ainsi que la mise en place d’une antibiothérapie dont le choix repose actuellement sur les recommandations de l’ANSM (recommandations AFSSAPS, 2011). En première intention, elles préconisent la prescription d’amoxicilline (2g/jours) ou clindamycine (1200g/jour) en cas d’allergie; en seconde intention, une bithérapie associant classiquement l’amoxicilline à l’acide clavulanique ou au métronidazole. L’émergence de mécanismes de résistances bactériennes a conduit à la mise en place d’actions favorisant une meilleure utilisation des antibiotiques. La France s’inscrit parmi les plus gros consommateurs en Europe (ANSM 2017): une surconsommation globale, une utilisation trop fréquente de molécules à large spectre en pratique courante. Dans ce contexte, l’ANSM a émis des recommandations sur la prescription des antibiotiques pour la prise en charge des CCASD. Sachant que 90% des prescriptions sont faites en ville dont 8% par les chirurgiens-dentistes (CD), il est paru nécessaire de connaître leur attitude. Nous avons donc souhaité évaluer l’impact des recommandations de l’ANSM chez les CD en France, dans la prise en charge des CCASD. Matériel et méthode: Nous avons réalisé une enquête nationale, en collaboration avec l’UFSBD (Union Francaise pour la Santé Bucco-Dentaire), regroupant 15000 praticiens, ayant recu le questionnaire par mail. Il comprenait 28 questions sur quatre thèmes principaux: prise en charge des CCASD, connaissance des recommandations, leur application, formations professionnelles initiales et continues. Résultats: Sur l’ensemble des praticiens, 690 (4,6%) ont participé à l’étude. 13% suivent de manière stricte les recommandations et 70,5% réalisent un acte clinique le jour de l’urgence : il correspond à 98% à un drainage (par voie muqueuse ou ouverture de la dent). Dans seulement 1/3 des cas la prescription de première intention se portait sur l’amoxicilline seule. 44% y associent des anti-inflammatoires. 68% des praticiens reconnaissent connaître les recommandations de l’ANSM par leur formation initiale (36%), une revue professionnelle (27%) ou un congrès (19%). La plupart suit une formation continue (77% une revue professionnelle, 90% un congrès, 38% un cursus de formation continue théorique). 89% prescrivent des anti-inflammatoires lors de la consultation d’urgence. Conclusion: Il existe peu de données évaluant l’impact des recommandations concernant ce sujet, mais il est communément admis qu’elles sont peu suivies (Gaillat et al 2005), ce que révèle également notre étude. Les raisons invoquées sont multiples : désaccord des praticiens sur l’efficacité des recommandations, manque de temps, contraintes organisationnelles. Bien que la bithérapie soit considérée comme plus efficace par les CD interrogés pour traiter les CCASD, les experts s’accordent à dire qu’elle participe à la création de la résistance bactérienne, considérée comme ≪ l’une des plus graves menaces pesant sur la santé mondiale ≫, et faisant l’objet d’un plan d’action mondial mis en place par l’OMS et l’ONU en 2015 (OMS, 2017).

The rapid expansion and integration of international trade, increased tourism, and changes in methods of production in recent decades have increased the likelihood of the introduction of invasive species to U.S. agriculture. Invasive species can have adverse environmental and/or economic impacts when introduced to a region. Economic impacts include marketing, production, and trade implications. One such invasive species imposing adverse economic impacts to the Florida citrus industry is a bacterial disease known as citrus canker (Xanthomonas axanopodis pv. citri). Citrus canker causes lesions on the leaves, stems, and fruit of citrus trees. The disease adversely affects the proportion of fruit intended for the fresh market, serves to weaken citrus trees, leads to a reduction in yields, and leads to higher costs of production. Florida’s Citrus Canker Eradication Program (CCEP) was implemented in the mid-1990s in an attempt to establish the guidelines for averting the spread of the disease. Currently there is no available biological or chemical cure for citrus canker. The CCEP instituted a policy of immediate eradication of any tree infected with citrus canker. Based upon the research by Gottwald et al., 2002, the CCEP also stipulated that all trees within a radius of 1900 feet of any infected trees be eradicated. Eradication is mandatory in such situations even if the trees within this radius do not yet show signs of infection. In addition to eradication, the CCEP defined additional regulations such as the decontamination of grove workers, field equipment, and packinghouses with approved chemicals (Chung et al., 2002). In 2004, an economic/benefit-cost analysis of the CCEP was conducted using the predicted values of the benefits and the costs associated with the policy. The actual expenditures of implementation through 2004 were weighed against the projected loss of revenue and the cost savings associated with an industry with pervasive citrus canker in an attempt to assess the net benefits of the policy. In this paper, a summary of the CCEP cost benefit analysis will be discussed. Three segments of Florida’s citrus industry were analyzed separately: 1) processed oranges; 2) fresh and processed grapefruit; and 3) specialty citrus fruit. An example will also be discussed which estimates the cumulative 15-year net grower returns for processed Hamlin and Valencia oranges which compares a no citrus canker situation with four possible endemic citrus canker fruit loss situations that include the additional grower costs to manage citrus canker. Note: The summary discussion presented in this paper on the economic impact of Florida’s citrus canker eradication program (CCEP) was completed in June–July 2004 prior to hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, and in 2005 hurricane Wilma spreading citrus canker across Florida’s commercial citrus acreage. Updating economic impact of the CCEP to reflect the impact of the hurricanes is currently being planned. Paper published with permission.
