Abstract: The ability of heterogeneous systems cooperate to problem's solutions is a real need that has been growing, due to the increasing development of the distributed processing technology. This need is driving the development of more suitable solutions. The CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) specification presents an architecture, which allows interoperability among heterogeneous distributed environment applications. However, because of the great flexibility offered in implementation decisions, many problems to extend interoperability between two ORBs developed by different technologies arise. This work discusses these problems and their solutions and presents a. set of operations to support an interception mechanism extending access and location transparencies, considered as fundamental for a distributed environment, to work beyond an ORB scope. A scheme to provide relocation transparency, extended to support interoperability is also proposed. Finally, an implementation of these mechanisms over an open ORB's prototype and ORBeline, a commercial product, is described.

Full textORB is able to perform its tasks in a fast and efficient manner by using simple models to represent the structural and movable objects in its database. ORB's recognition procedures only require sparse sets of range scans to identify the aforementioned objects. The structural object models are built from prior knowledge of the office environment. For example, the doorway model would consist of the known doorway widths found on the experimental office floor. ORB has been tested extensively in the CIM environment, but it can also be applied to any office space provided the structural dimensions are known a priori. ORB's models for the movable objects are idealized descriptions with the object's surfaces represented by planes. The physical dimensions of the movable object models are defined by Architectural Standards, as office furniture are built to conform to these standards.

Among a myriad of spider web geometries, the orb web presents a fascinating, exquisite example in architecture and evolution. Its structural component, the silk protein, is an exemplary natural material because its superior properties stem intrinsically from the synergistic cooperativity of hierarchically-organized components, rather than from the particular properties of the building blocks themselves. By bridging together different levels of hierarchy in the web, we elucidate the mechanisms by which structure at each composite level contributes to organization and material phenomena at subsequent levels, demonstrating that the web is a highly adapted system where both material and hierarchical structure across all length-scales is critical for its functional properties. Further, the material hierarchy scheme within the orb web is exploited to address questions of silk evolution. Spider orb webs can be divided into two categories distinguished by the capture silk used in construction: cribellate orb webs composed of pseudoflagelliform silk coated with dry cribellate threads and ecribellate orb webs, composed of viscid flagelliform silk fibers, coated by adhesive glue droplets. Cribellate capture silk is generally stronger but less extensible than viscid capture silk and a body of phylogenic evidence suggests that cribellate capture silk is more closely related to the ancestral form of capture spiral silk. Here, we use a coarse-grained web model to investigate how the mechanical properties of spiral capture silk affect the behavior of the web system, illustrating that more extensible capture spiral silk yields a decrease in the web's energy absorption, suggesting that the function of the capture spiral shifted from prey capture to other structural roles. Additionally, we observe that in webs with more extensible capture silk, the effect of thread strength on web performance is reduced, indicating that thread extensibility is a dominant driving factor in web diversification. In this thesis, we propose a novel model-centered materials-hierarchy based approach to studying evolutionary trends and suggest possible applications for other fields.

Full textThe Araneidae Clerck, 1757 has 3029 species in 168 genera. They are common in nature, weaving orbicular bidimensional webs on trees and bushes and, apparently, have nocturnal habits. Spiders of Eustala Simon, 1895 occur throughout all American continent and it seems to be the most speciose Neotropical Araneidae genus. The genus contains about 90 species, 16 of which have been described from Brazil. The male is characterized by the palpus with only one patellar macroseta; conic, whitish hanging down posteriorly median apophysis and the terminal apophysis is a sclerotinized extension, resting on a transparent, baloon-like, subterminal apophysis. The females are characterized by the epigynum with ringed scape pointed anteriorly. The most common pattern color on the abdomen dorsum is a folium. However, this could vary from specimen to specimen, being more or less pigmented. Although frequently collected, species of this genus are poorly known, at present, there are just a few studies on the genus from South America. Thus this study aims to contribute to the knowledge of the Brazilian species of Eustala, through diagnosis and illustrations of species from Southern Brazil, giving continuity to the work initiated about the genus on Rio Grande do Sul state. In order to carry out this study, Eustala material from several arachnological collections was analyzed. Illustrations were made with the aid of camera lucida coupled to the stereoscopic microscope. The left male palpus was illustrated on mesal and ventral views; the epigynum was illustrated on ventral, posterior and lateral views. In current study Eustala ulecebrosa (Keyserling, 1892), from Rio Grande do Sul and E. mourei Mello-Leitão, 1947, from Paraná are illustrated and redescribed. Eight new species from Southern Brazil are described: E. guarani sp. nov., from Paraná; E. catarina sp. nov., from Santa Catarina and E. ericae sp. nov., E. cidae sp. nov., E. lisei sp. nov., E. cuia sp. nov. and E. farroupilha sp. nov, all based on males and females and E. eldorado sp. nov., based only on males, from Rio Grande do Sul. Eustala albiventer (Keyserling, 1884), E. taquara (Keyserling, 1892), E. minuscula (Keyserling, 1892), E. itapocuensis Strand, 1916, E. photographica Mello-Leitão, 1944, E. levii and E. palmares, Poeta, Marques & Buckup, 2010 present new distribution records from Brazil and E. perfida Mello-Leitão, 1947 has a first record in Uruguay.

Abstract: This study investigates the rise and consolidation of the concepts of "nation' and "people", in nineteenth-century Brazil, as an intellectual paradigm which bounded the thought of a group of writers generally identified as "romantic generations". Even when separated by party-lines, or by partaking in the official protection, all those writers attributed to themselves and their works an important role in the building of a national state. This role, played through the making of a nationalliterature, is that we call here the men of letters' burden

Full textThe feline calicivirus (FCV) and the felid herpesvirus type 1 (FeHV-1) are the main agents of the respiratory tract diseases of felines. Both viruses are distributed worldwide, however its distribution and prevalence in Brazil are not well known. In the present thesis we describe the isolation and one serosurvey of FCV and FeHV-1 in some counties of the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil; and the molecular characterization of the capsid protein gene of FCV isolates is also described. In Chapter 1, we describe the epidemiologic survey of FCV and FeHV-1 through investigation of the conjunctival, nasal, oral and oropharyngeal swabs from 302 domestic cats. The viral isolation was performed in Crandell-Reese feline kidney cells and the isolates were submitted to PCR and RT-PCR for confirmation of the presence of the FeHV-1 and FCV, respectively. Fifty five (18.2%) of the 302 cats analyzed were positive for the viral isolation; when tested by PCR, 29 cats (52.7%) were shedding the FCV, 21 (38.2%) shedding FeHV-1, and 5 cats (9.1%) shedding both viruses. In addition, isolates of FCV and FeHV-1 were standardized to be used as control in the PCR and virus neutralization (VN) assays (serological technical used in chapter 3 of the thesis). The SV65/90 (FCV) and the SV534/00 (FeHV-1) isolates were defined as standard viruses for the assays. In Chapter 2, the molecular characterization of 13 FCV isolates is described; ten isolates came from the survey performed in chapter 1, two were deposited in the virology laboratory of the UFSM and one was obtained from a cat with gingivitis-stomatitis syndrome. The ORF2 (open reading frame) region that codifies the major protein of the viral capsid was sequenced, which includes an immunodominant region of the virus. The ORF 2 was analyzed at the nucleotide and amino acid levels and these data was used for phylogenetic studies of the 13 Brazilian isolates of FCV. These isolates were compared to ten reference strains of FCV and to the San Miguel sea lion virus type 1 (SMSV-1) as an outgroup in phylogenetic study. The primers were designed using the complete sequence of FCV-F9. The comparison of the 13 Brazilian isolates with the F9 strain revealed a large molecular diversity among them, concentrated mainly along the linear epitopes of the region. The Chapter 3 describes a serosurvey against FCV and FeHV-1 in serum samples from domestic feline. From the 630 samples tested by the VN assay, 53.6% (338/630) were positive to one or both viruses with a prevalence of 39.2% for neutralizing antibodies against FCV and 30.6% for FeHV-1. The results from the present study demonstrated that the FCV and FeHV-1 are circulating among the feline population examined, and also, the presence of carriers of the viruses among these cats. Besides, the molecular characterization of the FCV evidenced the great genetic variability of the Brazilian isolates when compared to vaccine and reference strains.

Full textSome 2,500 years ago, the Art of Memory paved the way for a total form of the arts, for the first time combining places (loci) and memory, space and time, image and thought. These arts go well beyond the mere process of mnemotechnics, proving also to be powerful machines that can be used to manipulate phantasms and images. What the Art of Memory has to tell us about the relationship between thought and image concerns the privileged function not just of the imaginary landscape and how man is inscribed on it, but also the process of walking abroad or from place to place (deambulation) whereby the projection of the images set onto the medium of one’s virtual architecture can be organised symbolically, following the logic of the path followed. What I have attempted to do is track down the apparition of images in movement in the explorations of Simonides, Llull, Bruno, Leibnitz, Warburg or Benjamin. Following this path, the image became thought and the text became sight. I imagined that cinema could be that total Memory Palace, that mobile memory and immobile journey, the passage created from life to the representation of life, the fluidity of metamorphosis and travelling

Full textHepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a major public health problem that affects more than20 million people and kills approximately 70,000 worldwide each year. HEV is the leadingcause of acute viral hepatitis in the world. In France, the seroprevalance of HEV is 22.4% inthe general population. This virus is transmitted by fecal-oral route or by consumption ofundercooked contaminated meat. Very recently, we have described an efficient cell culturesystem to amplify HEV. This system represents a unique tool for characterizing the variousstages of the infectious HEV lifecycle that are very poorly understood to date. As part of mythesis, I focused on the ORF2 capsid protein which is the structural unit of viral particles andis therefore a central player in the HEV lifecycle. ORF2 is a 660 amino acids protein thatcontains a signal peptide and three potential N-glycosylation sites (N1, N2 and N3). My workaimed to identify the role of the ORF2 N-glycosylation in the HEV lifecycle. Our resultsrevealed that the ORF2 protein is N-glycosylated on the N1 and N3 sites, whereas the N2 siteis not N-glycosylated. Also, the N-glycosylation has no significant relevance neither for thestability, oligomerization, antibody recognition of the ORF2 protein nor for viral assemblyand viral infectivity. We also revealed that, the ORF2 protein is translocated into the nucleusof infected cells, independently of N-glycosylation. We identified for the first time afunctional nuclear localization signal (NLS) located at the N-terminus of the ORF2 proteinthat interacts probably with the importin alpha1. Surprisingly, this NLS regulates both nuclearimport and endoplasmic reticulum translocation of the ORF2 protein. Finally, wedemonstrated that, the ORF2 protein possesses three nuclear export signals (NES) located atits C-terminus. The ORF2 protein interacts with the exportin1 and is exported from the cellnuclei. This interaction drives the ORF2 protein from the nucleus to the cytoplasm of theinfected cells. Hence, this study led to new insights into the molecular mechanisms of theORF2 protein and could help to the design of novel antiviral strategies against HEV

All faktisk data genererades i en MIC-applikation.

Full textThe Catholic Church elected the last decade of the past century for the investment in television as a resource and mean for evangelization, consolidating its tradition in electronic evangelization, started on the radio in the 50 s. Currently, in Brazil, there are four coexisting catholic television stations, which broadcast nationally: Rede Vida, Canção Nova, TV Século XXI and TV Aparecida, besides the local ones maintained by dioceses. The investment in television means that the physical church itself is no longer the exclusive place for the expression of cult. Our object of study is the analysis of the televisual broadcast produced by two catholic television stations: TV Canção Nova and TV Aparecida. The choice of these stations was made due to the definition of two distinct scenarios of Catholicism: the charismatic scenario and the institutional scenario. Two weeks were randomly selected during the research for an accurate analysis of the broadcast. We will take into consideration for the analysis not only the technical characteristics of the audiovisual but, above all, the content aired. We avoided the comparative analysis between the two stations because it would be irrelevant, considering that both are confessional stations of the same creed. We intend to verify if there is any differential between the broadcast produced by these stations and the others, basing on the hypothesis that by absorbing several formats of radiophonic programs and transposing them to television, confessional Catholics prepare its programming plan in formats that have already been established by evangelization and repeat in their broadcast the formats from nonconfessional stations. Our analysis is based on the case study of the mentioned stations and is supported by theories of cultural miscegenation (GRUZINSKI, 2001; PINHEIRO, 2009); of cultural mediation (MARTIN-BARBERO, 2001, 2004); the spectacle society (DEBORD, 2007); the sociology of absences and the emergencies (SANTOS, 2010)

Full textSpIOMM (spectromètre-imageur de l’observatoire du Mont-Mégantic), attached to the telescope of the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic, is an imaging Fourier transform spectrometer which is still the only instrument in the world capable of sampling a 12 arc-minute field of view into 1.4 million spectra in the visible band. Since the installation in 2010 of a second camera, which has given the possibility of using the data on the second port of the interferometer, on the one hand, and the development of SITELLE (spectromètre-imageur pour l’étude en long et en large des raies d’émission), an upgraded version of SpIOMM, for the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, on the other hand, the design of a data reduction software capable of combining the data of both ports, has become a necessity. The main part of this thesis concerns ORBS, a data reduction software for SpIOMM and SITELLE fully automated and based on an open and upgradable architecture. An application to the study of the Wolf-Rayet nebula M1-67, which, for the first time, clearly demonstrates the existence of two regions made of a material strongly enriched in nitrogen, is also presented.

Abstract: This thesis presents the Portuguese translation of Alector, histoire fabuleuse by Barthelemy Aneau, published in Lyon in 1560 by Pierre Fradin. The translation of that fabulous story is part of the translation project of literary utopias and one of its research lines, supervised by Professor Carlos Eduardo Ornelas Berriel of the Department of Literary Theory of the Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem of the University of Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil); it was co-directed by Professor Marie-Luce Demonet of the Department of Modern Languages, Renaissance Studies, of the Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance during a two-year doctorate exchange program in the city of Tours, France (March 2010-March 2012). A linear reading of Alector could hide a variety of elements that are distributed in a spiral of interests by the author, ranging from the exercise of Rhetoric and the defense of the vernacular to a practice of 'irony' by the use of speech where freedom of expression lacks. Therefore, a non-linear approach seemed to be a prerequisite to progress in the research and in the interpretations of that work. The assumption that real people could hide behind the fictional characters guided our methodological choices: a survey of the literature and visits to several documentation centers, such as the archives of the city of Bourges, Lyon, Paris, Vanves, Rome, and the Vatican. We aimed to find a connection between the tragic death of Barthélemy Aneau and the suspected Calvinist infiltration at the Collège de la Trinité managed by Aneau and we wanted to demonstrate that Alector is a metaphor or irony of its time. Our thesis is made up of two parts: Part A contains a critical study of the imaginary town of Orbe and is made up of three sections: first, the analysis of the general aspects of the work, especially Alector's trial and the dialogue of the elder; second, the utopian dimension of the city of Orbe and third, its religious dimension. Part B contains the study that prepared the translation and features two sections: the first one characterizes the work, discusses the meaning of the narrative in its context, and introduces its author; it also contains the general analysis of the results of the research conducted at the archives. The second chapter reflects on the process of translating Alector and was developed to justify the philological translation as one of the possible ways of treating the analyzed corpus, to explain both the theoretical basis and the organizational stages of the translation. The conclusion briefly resumes the discussion presented in these two parts and is followed by the bilingual translation of Alector, histoire fabuleuse. The appendices list the documents we looked up at the archives and libraries in France, Italy, and the Vatican. Our research at the archives did not produce any proof that would confirm our hypothesis, but revealed leads for future research, such as the gaps found in the documents of the Nunciature in France or an unpublished document found at the Municipal Library of Lyon on the death of the physician in charge of the "autopsy" of Barthelemy Aneau's body. After the translation provided by the English doctor John Hammond in 1590, we hope that 'Alector, histoire fabuleuse' may contribute to raise interest in the literary utopias of the Renaissance
