ABSTRACT This study describes aspects of infections caused by the myxosporidian Kudoa orbicularis in filter-feeding cichlids, Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis, caught in the Arari River in the municipality of Cachoeira do Arari, on Marajó Island, Pará, Brazil. The parasite forms pseudocysts scattered throughout the striated epaxial and hypaxial muscles. Samples embedded in paraffin were analyzed histologically using hematoxylin-eosin, Gömöri, Ziehl-Neelsen, and Giemsa staining. Abstract:
Abstract Background In order to correct upper lid laxity, upper blepharoplasty, subbrow excision, and forehead lift have been utilized. Our newly developed subbrow excision attaches the orbicularis oculi muscle to the frontalis muscle. This improves the longevity of the result without inhibiting the gliding plane of the periorbita. Method From January 2016 to July 2018, 564 patients were operated on using this technique. Among them, 41 were male and 523 were female with the average age of 59.5 years. The average size of the subbrow excision was 55 mm × 8 mm. From the upper skin incision site,

The orbicularis oculi are the sphincter muscles of the eyelids and are involved in modulating facial expression. They differ from both limb and extraocular muscles (EOMs) in their histology and biochemistry. Weakness of the orbicularis oculi muscles is a feature of neuromuscular disorders affecting the neuromuscular junction, and weakness of facial muscles and ptosis have also been described in patients with mutations in the ryanodine receptor gene. Here, we investigate human orbicularis oculi muscles and find that they are functionally more similar to quadriceps than to EOMs in terms of excit

AbstractDermatochalasis is a skin excess in the upper eyelid which may be associated with either an aesthetic and functional defect, blocking the peripheral vision. Upper blepharoplasty is the gold standard procedure for correction of dermatochalasis and to restore youthful contours to the periorbita. It is one of the most commonly performed procedures in aesthetic plastic surgery; however, there is still a lack of consensus about this procedure. The excess skin is sometimes removed alone or in conjunction with a strip of orbicularis oculi muscle. The rationale for both muscle and skin resecti

This article briefly reviews the literature describing the application of electoromyography technique to investigate the muscles of the orofacial region. Muscle characteristics are an indicator of complex functional relationships of the dentofacial system. Disorders of muscle function lead to morphological changes in the normal structure of the teeth and bones of the maxillofacial area, as well as exacerbate existing bite pathologies. Today, the electromyography is considered as the latest, objective, and informative method of functional diagnostics of the dentofacial system. This study is an

Abstract:
Epidermoid cysts are rarely detected malformations in the oral cavity. Their development sites are the sublingual, submaxillary, and submandibular spaces. In this paper, we report a three-month-old infant who was admitted to our hospital due upper lip swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that she had a two-centimeter cystic lesion and fusion defects of orbicularis oris muscle. The cyst was surgically removed and histopathological diagnosis was “epidermoid cyst.” In recent literature, we could not find reports related to orbicularis oris muscle fusion defects because of epidermoid cyst.
