Salazar, Kardozo Alexandros. "A High-Level Framework for the Autonomous Refueling of Satellite Constellations." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/14534.

Abstract:
Satellite constellations are an increasingly attractive option for many commercial and military applications. They provide a robust and distributed method of accomplishing the goals of expensive monolithic satellites. Among the many challenges that satellite constellations engender (challenges in control, coordination, disposal, and other areas), refueling is of particular interest because of the many methods one can use to refuel a constellation and the lifetime implications on the satellites. The present work presents a methodology for carrying out peer-to-peer refueling maneuvers within a

This thesis investigates using adaptive estimation techniques to determine unknown model parameters such as size and surface material reflectivity, while estimating position, velocity, attitude, and attitude rates of a resident space object. This work focuses on the application of these methods to the space situational awareness problem. This thesis proposes a unique method of implementing a top-level gating network in a dual-layer hierarchical mixture of experts. In addition it proposes a decaying learning parameter for use in both the single layer mixture of experts and the dual-layer hierar

Traditionally, differential-equation models for population dynamics have considered organisms as "fixed" entities in terms of their behaviour and characteristics. However, there have been many observations of adaptivity in organisms, both at the level of behaviour and as an evolutionary change of traits, in response to the environmental conditions. Taking such adaptiveness into account alters the qualitative dynamics of traditional models and is an important factor to be included, for example, when developing reliable model predictions under changing environmental conditions. Abstract:
This thesis takes a closer look at the complex maneuver known as gravity assist, a popular method of interplanetary travel. The maneuver is used to gain or lose momentum by flying by planets, which induces a speed and direction change. A simulation model is created using the General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT), which is intended to be easily reproduced and altered to match any desired gravity assist maneuver. The validity of its results is analyzed, comparing them to available data from real missions. Some parameters, including speed and trajectory, are found to be extremely reliable. The mod

"Earth is a small town with many neighborhoods in a very big universe." The quote of the American Astronaut Ronald John Garan Jr. perfectly summarizes the universal and enduring mankind's interest in exploring the unknown, discovering new worlds, pushing the boundaries of scientific and technical limits further and beyond. More than a half century ago, during a speech delivered at Rice University in Houston, President John F. Kennedy claimed the Moon as the new frontier for the human space exploration. The outstanding achievements of the Apollo mission pushed the research in space across the s
