Rats were orchidectomized (ORCH) as adults and given 1) successive doses of 0.5 μg or 1.0 μg of oestradiol benzoate (EB) combined or not with dexamethasone (DEXA) at the end of oestrogen treatment; 2) successive doses of olive oil. There are substantial sex differences in renal structure and ammonia metabolism that correlate with differences in expression of proteins involved in ammonia generation and transport. This study determined the role of testis-derived testosterone in these differences. We studied 4-mo-old male C57BL/6 mice 4 and 8 wk after either bilateral orchiectomy (ORCH) or sham-operated control surgery and determined the effect of testosterone replacement to reverse the effects of ORCH. Finally, we determined the cellular expression of androgen receptor (AR), testosterone’s canonical target receptor. ORCH d

Despite the advances in the neuroscience field, the nature of consciousness and the mind-body problem are still unsolved. No conventional neurophysiological method has been able to explain consciousness, other than focusing on neural signals. Various theories, such as Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR), Higher Order Theory, Global Workspace Theory, and Integrated Information Theory, also have serious limitations. To better understand the nature of consciousness, the present work explores the connection between Quantum Mechanics and Statistical Physics, in particular through the Orch-OR

AbstractThe “Orch OR” theory suggests that quantum computations in brain neuronal dendritic-somatic microtubules regulate axonal firings to control conscious behavior. Within microtubule subunit proteins, collective dipoles in arrays of contiguous amino acid electron clouds enable “quantum channels” suitable for topological dipole “qubits” able to physically represent cognitive values, for example, those portrayed by Pothos & Busemeyer (P&B) as projections in abstract Hilbert space.

Abstract The Orch OR theory attributes consciousness to “orchestrated” quantum computations in microtubules inside brain neurons. These terminate by Penrose objective reduction (OR), a process in the fine scale structure of the universe which introduces phenomenal experience and non-computability. Lattice polymers of tubulin proteins, microtubules organize intra-neuronal activities. The Penrose-Hameroff Orch OR theory suggests that microtubules 1) encode memory and process information, 2) orchestrate quantum vibrational superpositions (qubits) of pi electron resonance dipoles within tubulin wh

Abstract The human ability to achieve conscious understanding is argued to be a non-computational process. For this to be in accordance with physical laws requires something beyond current physical theory, in supplying a physical basis for “the collapse of the wave function”, demoted OR. This is argued to be an effect of gravitation on quantum mechanics. OR events are what allow a firm classical reality to arise from a quantum reality having a somewhat weaker ontological status. When appropriately orchestrated, these “proto-conscious” OR events become genuine conscious processes according to t

Abstract In The Emperor’s New Mind and Shadows of the Mind, Roger Penrose followed a delicate thread to begin to unravel the problem of consciousness. He concluded that conscious thought is more than computation—our minds utilize some type of non-algorithmic processing unavailable in computers. Regarding the identity of the proposed processing, the intrepid sleuth also searched for a ‘subtle and largely unknown physical principle’ capable of performing the needed non-computational actions. That principle was deduced to be ‘objective reduction’ (OR) of quantum coherent superposition, Penrose’s
