Abstract:
Australian fruit growers face huge losses due to the damage sustained from flying vertebrate pests such as birds and flying foxes. Growers spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in combating these pests due to the strict stipulations by the Department of Environment and Resource Management requiring all deterrent measures to be non-lethal. Some of the counter measures include canopy netting, tunnel netting, odour repellents, sounds, lights, scare guns, fruit bags and chemicals. These methods involve high capital and periodic maintenance costs and are rendered ineffective over a period of time

PhD (Zoology)
Department of Zoology
An ever growing human population and accelerating land use change is associated with the loss of species and their ecosystem services. Agricultural intensification has led to a worldwide threat of extinction to about one quarter of all bat species, despite the valuable ecosystem service of pest control provided by bats. The decline in bat populations is mainly attributed to the loss or fragmentation of habitats, roost sites and feeding opportunities related to agricultural intensification and land use change. Therefore, proactive management of ba

Knowing this, the main goal of this study was the monitoring of the Auchenorrhyncha suborder for potential pests on peach orchards of the Beira Interior region, with a particular focus on the green leafhopper spe

This thesis is concerned with the biology of Eriosoma lanigerum (WAA) and its parasitoid (Aphelinus mali), the impact of the pest on the crop and the effects of pesticides used routinely in South Australian orchards on both woolly apple aphid and the parasitic wasp. The study identifies current management practices of apple growers in South Australia. Aspects of the biology of WAA and A.mali are examined. Work is also done on the toxicity against WAA and A.mali of insecticides used in the control of codling moth and phytophagous mites.

Abstract:
Orchid fleck virus (OFV) is one of three commonly found viruses infecting orchids. Infected plants have reduced flower quality and often unsightly leaf markings and are unsaleable. Effective disease control relies on routine detection of the virus, but foliar symptoms can vary markedly and are often not reliable for diagnosis. Current laboratory tests use examination of leaf sap by electron microscopy. This is time consuming and costly. The preferred immunological tests are not available as OFV has an unstable virion and attempts to purify virus particles for antibody production have fa
