Abstract:
The authors describe a formal methodology for the automatic synthesis of a secure orchestrator for a set of BPMN processes. The synthesized orchestrator is able to guarantee that all the processes that are started reach their end, and the resulting orchestrator process is secure, that is, it does not allow the disclosure of certain secret messages. The authors present an implementation of a forth and back translation from BPMN to Crypto-CCS, that permits them to exploit the previously existing PaMoChSA tool to synthesize BPMN orchestrators. Furthermore, they study the problem of ranking orchestrators based on quantitative valuations of a process, the temporal evolution of such valuations, and their security, as a function of the knowledge of the attacker.

Abstract:
Most modern 5G Vertical Service Orchestrators present various limitations. Among these, one may high-light (i) the employment of monolithic architectures, (ii) the lack of standardized APIs and methodologies, (iii) the minimum support for inter-domain scenarios, and (iv) the impossibility of performing run-time operations over Vertical Services. To achieve a fully-fledged Vertical Service Orchestrator, these problems must be solved. This is the focus of the work presented in this article. Our work presents a new 5G Vertical Service orchestration system named NetOr, which tackles all the listed limitations and can support complex and intricate use cases. NetOr was implemented according to a microservice architecture. Thus, it has increased flexibility, scalability, and maintainability. Moreover, NetOr inherited most advantages of the modern Vertical Service Orchestrators and, therefore, can be considered an improvement of said orchestrators. Furthermore, this work also presents a Proof-of-Concept solution to achieve inter-domain communication through the orchestration of an End-To-End Network Slice that establishes several VPN tunnels between the domains encompassed by the Network Slice.

Abstract:
Network Function Virtualization is a new technology allowing for a elastic cloud and bandwidth resource allocation. The technology requires an orchestrator whose role is the service and resource orchestration. It receives service requests, each one characterized by a Service Function Chain, which is a set of service functions to be executed according to a given order. It implements an algorithm for deciding where both to allocate the cloud and bandwidth resources and to route the SFCs. In a traditional orchestration algorithm, the orchestrator has a detailed knowledge of the cloud and network infrastructures and that can lead to high computational complexity of the SFC Routing and Cloud and Bandwidth resource Allocation (SRCBA) algorithm. In this paper, we propose and evaluate the effectiveness of a scalable orchestration architecture inherited by the one proposed within the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and based on the functional separation of an NFV orchestrator in Resource Orchestrator (RO) and Network Service Orchestrator (NSO). Each cloud domain is equipped with an RO whose task is to provide a simple and abstract representation of the cloud infrastructure. These representations are notified of the NSO that can apply a simplified and less complex SRCBA algorithm. In addition, we show how the segment routing technology can help to simplify the SFC routing by means of an effective addressing of the service functions. The scalable orchestration solution has been investigated and compared to the one of a traditional orchestrator in some network scenarios and varying the number of cloud domains. We have verified that the execution time of the SRCBA algorithm can be drastically reduced without degrading the performance in terms of cloud and bandwidth resource costs.

Abstract:
A development of an orchestrator that manages multiusers and shared resources is extremely useful for automaton of jobs on the multiple machines. Many companies such as UiPath, Blue Prism, Automation Anywhere, etc. have their own orchestrator, but their orchestration services have some drawbacks (i.e., huge cost of yearly subscription, lack of user defined flexibility in architecture, and third-party security issues). The manuscript contains the design and analysis of orchestrator using open-source programming language and cloud platform (i.e., Python and OpenStack). The main focus of this paper is design and development of the orchestrator with shared resources and distribute environment management system that help to manage the multiuser, multi-machine environment in an efficient way. The overall examination delights that design and development of inhouse orchestrator application using open-source assets is not only useful in terms of colossal expense slicing, but also the development of free and flexible robotic process automation applications.

Abstract:
This paper demonstrates the use of software-defined networking (SDN) orchestration to integrate regionally separated networks in which different network parts use incompatible key management systems (KMSs) managed by different SDN controllers to ensure end-to-end QKD service provisioning to deliver the QKD keys between geographically different QKD networks. The study focuses on scenarios in which different parts of the network are managed separately by different SDN controllers, requiring an SDN orchestrator to coordinate and manage these controllers. In practical network deployments, operators often utilize multiple vendors for their network equipment. This practice also enables the expansion of the QKD network’s coverage by interconnecting various QKD networks equipped with devices from different vendors. However, as coordinating different parts of the QKD network is a complex task, this paper proposes the implementation of an SDN orchestrator which acts as a central entity to manage multiple SDN controllers, ensuring end-to-end QKD service provisioning to address this challenge. For instance, when there are multiple border nodes to interconnect different networks, the SDN orchestrator calculates the path in advance for the end-to-end delivery of keys between initiating and target applications belonging to different networks. This path selection requires the SDN orchestrator to gather information from each SDN controller managing the respective parts of the QKD network. This work shows the practical implementation of SDN orchestration for interoperable KMS in commercial QKD networks in South Korea. By employing an SDN orchestrator, it becomes possible to coordinate multiple SDN controllers and ensure the efficient and secure delivery of QKD keys between different QKD networks with varying vendor equipment.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a decentralized framework for the orchestration of Cloud Services using heterogeneous resources residing in the homes of private individuals or small-scale clusters. The framework makes use of Ethereum Smart Contracts to provide a decentralized mechanism for discovering the different interfaces exposed by Cloud Components. The paper introduces a novel concept of Component Administration Networks, which are peer-to-peer networks that monitor and ensure the availability of the software components. The concept applied for the Orchestration process to ensure that the deployment of an Application continues in the presence of Orchestrator component failure. Checkpoints are used to address the continuity of the Management components, in general, and of the Orchestrator, in particular. In our proposal, checkpoint metadata is stored in a Smart Contract to assess the execution time of a Service to reimburse the participants that ensure its execution.

Abstract:
The ever-increasing growth and complexity of software-intensive systems over the past 20 years and the ensuing rise in geographically distributed projects are trends that are here to stay. Solving the distributed project management problem by automating it is a top priority, one that relies not simply on the intelligent application of technology, but also on coordinated, complementary efforts focused on people and processes. These systems must evolve to support increased decision velocity and cohesiveness in today’s increasingly distributed world. The unique features of a software product line organization challenge the conventional definition of project management. Among those features are different project types, each of which adds value in a different way. A Project Management Office System (PMOS) is designed to help project office personnel manage project and resource information. The system, built using Oracle Application Express (APEX) and hosted on Oracle Cloud, shall allow input of new project and new resource details, and manipulation of project/resource information. It will facilitate the allocation of resources to projects and the transfer of resources across projects. The system will also manage training requirements, training schedules, and training closure functions.

Abstract:
This article introduces the concept of orchestration as the mobilization of an intermediary by an orchestrator on a voluntary basis in pursuit of a joint governance goal. Orchestrator-Intermediary theory then provides a model of indirect governance that supplements delegation models premised on principal-agent theory. Under both theories, governors enhance their governance capacity by drawing on the capabilities of third parties. Whereas delegation is premised on hard ‘contractual’ control over the agent, however, orchestration relies on the soft control of like-minded intermediaries through material and ideational support. The two models overlap, and governors mix them in practice, but distinguishing between them analytically can broaden and deepen analysis of indirect forms of governance. This article discusses the circumstances under which each model provides a better fit for real-world problems, as well as the key limitations of each model. Among other things, orchestration is relatively more likely in democratic than authoritarian systems, when governors have limited direct capacities of their own and when veto players are more numerous. Orchestration is not always more desirable than delegation, but it provides an important alternative in some circumstances. Multiple examples from both domestic and international settings are used to illustrate this claim. The article closes with key considerations regarding the effectiveness and legitimacy of orchestration.

Abstract:
Amid the current industrial revolution, a total disruption of the existing production lines may seem to be the easiest approach, as the potential possibilities seem limitless when starting from the ground up. On the business side, an adaptation of existing production lines is always a preferred option. In support of adaptation as opposed to disruption, this paper presents a new approach of using production process orchestration in a smart factory, discussed in an industrial case-study example. A proposed smart factory has the Orchestrator component in its core, responsible for complete semantical orchestration of production processes on one hand, and various factory resources on the other hand, in order to produce the desired product. The Orchestrator is a complex, modular, highly scalable, and pluggable software product responsible for automatised planning, scheduling, and execution of the complete production process. According to their offered capabilities, non-smart and smart resources—machines, robots, humans—are simultaneously and dynamically assigned to execute their dedicated production steps.

"Notch signalling in intestinal homeostasis and cancer: orchestrator of stemness." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/664090.

Full text
Abstract:
Wnt/β-catenin and Notch signalling cooperate in regulating the transcription of various genes specifically in the small intestinal stem and progenitor cell compartments. We characterized Bmi1 functionally in this context and showed that it contributes to ISC self-renewal capacity. We postulated that it does so by regulating its classical locus Cdkn2a and probably also by supporting DNA damage repair. Yet another level of Notch and Wnt/β-catenin crosstalk was found in colorectal cancer where tumour-associated β-catenin induced Jagged 1 (Jag1) transcription, thus leading to Notch activation. We also investigated which is the contribution of intestinal epithelial Jag1-mediated Notch activation on tumour initiating activity. We found that intestinal-specific deletion of Jag1 greatly decreases tumour formation in the ApcMin/+ background, likely due to reduced stemness. Jag1 deletion in preformed spheroids abrogates stemness-related gene expression and proliferation leading to spheroid failure. Jag1 is dispensable for normal stem cells, which rely on Dll1/4 Notch ligands for their maintenance. Together, these results open a new path in personalised CRC therapy, presumably involving Notch inhibition from specific ligands.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Edge computing emerged as an attractive method of distributing computational resources in a network. When compared with cloud computing, edge computing presents a number of key benefits which include improved response times, scalability, privacy, and redundancy. This makes edge computing desirable for use in mobile robotics, in which low response times and redundancy are key issues. This thesis work will cover the design and implementation of a general-purpose edge orchestrator, that can support a wide range of domains due to being built around the concept of modularity. An edge orchestrator is a program that manages an edge network by analyzing the edge network and the requirements of devices within that network, then optimizing how the computational resources are distributed within the devices in the network. Modules have been designed and implemented on top of the orchestrator that allow for optimizations specific to mobile robotics. A proof of concept module was designed to optimize for latency which was compared with an external algorithm that seeks to optimize for latency as well. Both were implemented on the orchestrator and an evaluation was performed to compare both approaches. It was found that the module designed in this thesis is better suited for optimizing for latency. LXD was chosen to be used for software packaging which is a container-based software packaging solution. A software packaging solution is used to package software which would be deployed by the orchestrator. The choice of LXD is analyzed through an evaluation procedure that compares it with Docker, which is another container-based software packaging solution. It was found that LXD produces containers of smaller size but required more time to generate those containers, when compared with Docker. It was also found that LXD container images exhibited better performance than the Docker ones for software which is not I/O heavy. It was decided through this evaluation that LXD was a better choice for the orchestrator.

Abstract:
Cloud computing is a quickly growing field in modern computing science where new technologies arise every day. One of the latest trends in cloud computing is container based technology, which  allows applications to run in a reproducible and stateless fashion without requiring manually installed dependencies. Another trend in computer science is DevOps, a methodology where developers take part in the operations process. DevOps popularise the use of CI/CD workflows, where automatic pipelines run tests and scripts on new code. A container orchestrator, like Kubernetes, can be used to control and modify containers. Kubernetes allows integrating multiple third-party applications that can monitor performance, analyze logs, and much more. Kubernetes can be integrated into the CI/CD system to utilise its container orchestration perks. Building containers inside a container can cause security issues because of native security flaws with OCI build tools. This thesis aims to look at these issues and analyse the field of container orchestrated OCI build tools using Kubernetes and OCI build tools. We also discover how to develop a test suite that can reliably test container orchestrated OCI build tools and export metrics. The thesis lastly compares different Dockerfile compliant Build tools with the test suite to find out which has the best performance and caching. The compared build tools are BuildKit, Kaniko, Img and Buildah and overall BuildKit and Kaniko are the fastest and most resource effective build tools. It is not obvious which build tool that is the most secure. Kaniko, which is a root container requires no privileges and is therefore tough to break out of but an eventual breakout will give the attacker root access to the host machine. BuildKit and Img only requires unconfined SECcomp and AppArmor which will make a container breakout more probable, even though less than Buildah which must be run in a privileged container. Since they can run rootless, the attacker will only have the same access to the host as that user in case of a container breakout.

Variations in atmospheric oxygen levels can be traced over evolutionary time and track closely with the development of multicellular life, speciation events, appearance of placental mammals and the creation of a cardio-respiratory system. As the final electron acceptor for aerobic ATP production, oxygen allows energy-intensive metabolic pathways to exist. Furthermore, oxygen is the most utilized substrate for known biochemical reactions, surpassing even ATP and NAD+. As a result, variations in oxygen levels have far-reaching consequences on human physiology and health. Mitochondrial disorders are the most common inborn errors of metabolism, affecting approximately 1 in 5000 live births. Patients can present in infancy or adulthood with symptoms affecting multiple organ systems including blindness, deafness, muscle weakness, developmental delay and severe neurological impairment. Unfortunately, there are currently no proven therapies for mitochondrial disorders. My thesis work has focused on combining systems biology, animal physiology and cellular metabolism approaches to develop new therapies for these disorders. More specifically, I have identified hypoxic breathing, equivalent to living at 4500m altitude, as protective in the setting of severe mitochondrial disease. First, I performed a genetic screen and found paradoxically, that hypoxic breathing and hypoxia responses are protective in mitochondrial disease. I then characterized the physiology and preclinical regimens of hypoxia therapy, laying the groundwork for translation to human patients. Fascinated by such a vital role for oxygen in human disease, I went on to define adaptive pathways in varying oxygen tensions. This work highlights the differential reliance on entire organelles at extreme oxygen levels. And finally, I studied the metabolic and proteomic consequences of defects in peroxisome metabolism and disease.

Abstract:
AbstractContainerization technology helps achieving not only better portability and interoperability but also better performance and efficiency on various cloud computing arrangements. Such technology is expected to empower cloud federations by enhancing portability and scalability across the federation. In this paper, we propose an architecture by adding two subcomponents to the NIST reference architecture for identifying resources and managing container orchestration in cloud federation environments. The architecture adds two subcomponents to the NIST reference architecture. The proposed two new sub-components enable resource identification and container orchestration across cloud federation members. These names of the two subcomponents are the Resource Identifier and the Container Orchestrator, respectively. The Resource Identifier component identifies the appropriate federated member for allocating tasks based on previous experience and current status. The Container Orchestrator facilitates the management and orchestration of containers at the federation level. We also identified several techniques, which can be used for resource identification. Among those, linear regression technique is selected for resource provisioning and identification of federation members. Further, these techniques are also expected to learn from log files from previous executions and prioritize resources based on the current resource status and previous experience.

Abstract:
While Python excels at prototyping and iterating quickly, it’s not always performant enough for whole-genome scale data processing. Flyte, an open-source Python-based workflow orchestrator, presents an excellent way to tie together the myriad tools required to run bioinformatics workflows. Flyte is a Kubernetes native orchestrator, meaning all dependencies are captured and versioned in container images. It also allows you to define custom types in Python representing genomic datasets, enabling a powerful way to enforce compatibility across tools. Finally, Flyte provides a number of different abstractions for wrapping these tools, enabling further standardization. Computational biologists, or any scientists processing data with a heterogeneous toolset, stand to benefit from a common orchestration layer that is opinionated yet flexible.

Abstract:
Evolving 5G network scenarios will have to deal with new multiple administrative domain (aka multi-domain) orchestration models. Based on a new broker-plane approach on top of per-domain management and orchestration functions, we present a Multi-domain orchestration prototype capable to coordinate the delivery of a multi-operator End-to-End Network Service (E2ENS) that combines per-domain paths and network functions for a given service request. Our prototype implementation retrieves local information about topology and resources from each Multi-domain Orchestrator (MdO) to offer after inter-domain added value services in the form of abstract Map Services. These map abstractions are easily consumable through developer-friendly REST APIs based on the Application-Layer Traffic Optimization (ALTO) standard protocol.

Abstract:
Procedural Content Generation for multiple game content facets is a challenge for the game industry and academia. A content orchestrator is a software that can manage different procedural content generators, mixing their outputs while maintaining coherence and feasibility. We adapted a content orchestrator, originally meant for a top-down adventure game, to a 2D platformer. Both versions procedurally generate Levels, Rules, and Narrative, while adapting to distinct player profiles. A pre-test questionnaire is used to evaluate the player profile, and a post-test questionnaire is used to evaluate the game prototype we developed for this experimental purpose and the procedurally generated content. Results show the game was fun, challenging, interesting to explore, and with a moderate difficulty. Although with a limited sample, our results indicate the system was able to target content based on profiles. Therefore, this is a first step into understanding how a content orchestrator can be adapted to different game genres.

Tyson, Paul. Orchestrated Irrationality: Why It Exists and How It Might Be Resisted. Mέta | Centre for Postcapitalist Civilisation, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55405/mwp13en.

Full text
Abstract:
Orchestrated irrationality in our public discourse is produced by technologically enhanced and commercially purposed atomization and tribalism. Public discourse now leans away from a humane, free, and reasoned political rationality and towards self-interested, calculative, herd conformism. The bulls and bears of consumer society have largely displaced the civic logic of the liberal democratic pursuit of the common good. The power interests that govern global consumerism are enhanced by subordinating the common good ends of genuinely political life to the self-interested and profit driven dynamics of the market. Orchestrated irrationality in our public discourse makes politics into a meaningless theatre of incommensurate tribal interest narratives, which is a convenient distraction from the collaborative consolidation of market power and state control. This orchestrated irrationality can only be combatted by seeking to de-atomize citizens and de-tribalize the public square in order to recover the priority of political life over market and authoritarian power in our public discourse. That is, a postcapitalist civilization that is oriented to a genuinely political and universally moral rationality must replace the present global order. Once we can identify the problem and the direction of cure for orchestrated irrationality, we can then take steps towards a different civilizational life-world.

Institute for Learning Sciences and Teacher Education, Australian Catholic University, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.24268/acu.8zy8y.

Full text
Abstract:
[Executive summary] Literacy studies have traditionally focussed on the seen. The other senses are typically under-recognised in literacy studies and research, where the visual sense has been previously prioritised. However, spoken and written language, images, gestures, touch, movement, and sound are part of everyday literacy practices. Communication is no longer focussed on visual texts but is a multisensory experience. Effective communication depends then on sensory orchestration, which unifies the body and its senses. Understanding sensory orchestration is crucial to literacy learning in the 21st century where the combination of multisensory practices is both digital and multimodal. Unfortunately, while multimodal literacy has become an increasing focus in school curriculum, research has still largely remained focussed on the visual. The Sensory Orchestration for Multimodal Literacy Learning in Primary Education project, led by ARC Future Fellow Professor Kathy Mills, sought to address this research deficit. In addressing this gap, the project built an evidence base for understanding how students become critical users of sensory techniques to communicate through digital, virtual, and augmented-reality texts. The project has contributed to the development of new multimodal literacy programs and a next-generation approach to multimodality through the utilisation of innovative sensorial education programs in various educational environments including primary schools, digital labs, and art museums.

Abstract:
Unfolding processes of timbre and memory in improvisational piano performance This exposition is an introduction to my research and practice as a pianist, in which I unfold processes of timbre and memory in improvised music from a performer’s perspective. Timbre is often understood as a purely sonic perceptual phenomenon. However, this is not in accordance with a site-specific improvisational practice with changing spatial circumstances impacting the listening experience, nor does it take into account the agency of the instrument and objects used or the performer’s movements and gestures. In my practice, I have found a concept as part of the creating process in improvised music which has compelling potential: Timbre orchestration. My research takes the many and complex aspects of a performance environment into account and offers an extended understanding of timbre, which embraces spatial, material and bodily aspects of sound in improvised music performance. The investigative projects described in this exposition offer a methodology to explore timbral improvisational processes integrated into my practice, which is further extended through collaborations with sound engineers, an instrument builder and a choreographer: -experiments in amplification and recording, resulting in Memory piece, a series of works for amplified piano and multichannel playback - Piano mapping, a performance approach, with a custom-built device for live spatialization as means to expand and deepen spatio-timbral relationships; - Accretion, a project with choreographer Toby Kassell for three grand pianos and a pianist, where gestural approaches are used to activate and compose timbre in space. Together, the projects explore memory as a structural, reflective and performative tool and the creation of performing and listening modes as integrated parts of timbre orchestration. Orchestration and choreography of timbre turn into an open and hybrid compositional approach, which can be applied to various contexts, engaging with dynamic relationships and re-configuring them.

Abstract:
This article explores the evolving landscape of digital authoritarianism in Turkish cyberspace, focusing on the deceptive strategies employed by the AKP regime through AKtrolls, AKbots and hackers. Initially employing censorship and content filtering, the government has progressively embraced sophisticated methods, including the weaponization of legislation and regulatory bodies to curtail online freedoms. In the third generation of information controls, a sovereign national cyber-zone marked by extensive surveillance practices has emerged. Targeted persecution of critical netizens, coupled with (dis)information campaigns, shapes the digital narrative. Central to this is the extensive use of internet bots, orchestrated campaigns, and AKtrolls for political manipulation, amplifying government propaganda and suppressing dissenting voices. As Turkey navigates a complex online landscape, the study contributes insights into the multifaceted tactics of Erdogan regime’s digital authoritarianism.
