Kim, Jinho. "Représentation et analyse musicale assistée par base de données relationnelle de la partition des variations pour orchestre op. 30 d'Anton Webern : vers un système d'"analyse musicale assistée par base de données relationnelle"." Paris 4, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA040004.
Full textA note in a score, as other musical objects, can be considered as an entity having some properties. These last are represented by atomic values in columns on a line of relational data base table. The representation of all notes in the score in relational form of tables as a totality of columns and lines facilitates the access to the music analysis of open character: each can interrogate following each problematic the database that represents and stocks the score. The score of Variations for orchestra op. 30 of Anton Webern, as an example of application of the concept of “Relational Database-aided Music Analysis”, is represented, stored, and analyzed in a classificatory and a paradigmatic way: All sets, all intervals, and all chords existing in the score are retrieved, as a result on can verify the dominant intervals and chords; the particularities concerned distribution of notes in the register, duration, intensity and orchestration are also recognized

Meyzie-Rozier, Chloé. "L'évolution des formats orchestraux dans le jazz français (1945-2010) : les nouveaux visages du "grand orchestre" contemporain." Thesis, Tours, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015TOUR2031.
Full textTaking big jazz orchestras as my study subject, this thesis looks not only at the apprehension of the wide instrumental configurations in French jazz (1945-2010) but also the analysis of the approach adopted by French musicians as regards the big band, a formation basically frozen in tradition. After having established the principal models of the American big bands and seen their evolution, the aesthetic paths made by the French musicians after the Liberation have been put in evidence. Whilst certain orchestras chose to express themselves in a formation considered sacred during the Swing era (Claude Bolling, Jean-Claude Naude or Jacques Denjean), other groups, one by one, distanced themselves from the American models (Christian Chevallier). Finally, the attitude of certain musicians clearly adopted a break from the basic instrumental format (Jef Gilson or André Hodeir). The musicological analysis has therefore wished to evaluate on the one hand the musical movement based on copying the grand masters, and, on the other hand, the procedures which allowed to break through the imitation process to create a more personal path. Placed at the heart of the thought was the concept of soloists and arrangements, as well as the filiation dialectic – invention, the study made the point on the transfiguration of the sound which had been considered the norm up until then. Seen as outdated in the 1970s, the big orchestras made a wonderful comeback in France at the beginning of the 1980s. Nevertheless, this 're-birth' seems to have been accompanied by the appearance of somewhat smaller 'big orchestras'. With historic evidence of this phenomenon, the work has involved research into the causes which led to the creation of these formats. Socio- economic aspects have been questioned in this context, as well as the politics of helping creativity, the mastery of the notion of a project and the technological progress as well as aesthetic choices. Finally, when notions of individuality and freedom seem to be the root of the birth of these new orchestral formations, the strategies developed by the musicians have been analysed to reconcile an approach which better takes into account the creative individualities whilst not denying the collective aspect of playing jazz in a big orchestra. Digging into the repertories of today's groups, (Circum Orchestra, Diagonal, Pink Machine, MegaOctet, Radiation 10, le Sens de la Marche, Tous Dehors or X’tet) the study has consisted of revealing the dynamic processes governing the activity of today's big French jazz orchestras
Nicephor, Sylvie. "L’apprentissage de la composition musicale : regard sur la situation francaise durant la premiere moitie du XIXe siecle." Paris 4, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA040195.
Full textThe training in music composition in France during the first half of the XIXth century was dominated by two major Parisian institutions born out of the Revolution and the Empire : the Conservatoire and the Prix de Rome. Multidisciplinary, elitist and hierarchical, it rests on two styles that are opposing and complementary at the same time : the strict (founded on a contrapuntal heritage), and the ideal (tending towards dramatic composition, and where aesthetic norms remain affected by those of the previous century). Confronted by the burgeoning Romantic movement, in a changing society where one must submit to the taste of the public, what could be its final goal?
Stephanus, Christine. "Identification du manuscrit D-Bds Mus. Ms. Autogr. J. V. Meder 1 : prélude à une édition critique." Paris 4, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA040197.
Full textThis doctoral thesis is dedicated to a manuscript belonging to the Berlin National Library : D-Bds Mus. Ms. Autogr. J. V. Meder 1. Although it is classified among highly valuable sources since 1850, this score of a St. Matthew Oratorio-Passion hasn't been the subject of any research yet. Though, the title page being lost, the composer as well as the composition place and date of the unique remaining source were unknown. Basing on the analysis of the source (paper, inks and handwritings), this thesis sets out how the three versions forming this manuscript have been updated. Considering that the Passion has been performed in Riga throughout the 18th century, the study of the historical context of the work in that city, revealed as the actual place of composition by the watermarks, allowed to determine the meaning of the apocryphal versions in comparison to the original one. Lastly, the analysis of the materials characteristics in the perspective of the sources of that time, as well as the dating of the chorals melodies in the manuscript, permitted the final identification of the Actus Musicus de Passione Jesu Christi, composed by Johann Valentin Meder in 1716. This research restores to favour a Passion that is wrongly identified and edited in current publications (MGG, New Grove or Das Chorwerk edition), making it therefore the prelude to a critical edition
Korth, Arnaud. "Les timbres percussifs comme source d'inspiration à la composition de trois oeuvres." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/27570.
Full textThis master’s thesis examines three of my recent instrumental compositions that use percussive timbres as inspiration. These three pieces are: 1. Et pourtant elle tourne ! for string quartet; 2. Obsession for mezzo-soprano, flute, clarinet, vibraphone, piano, violin and violoncello; 3. Au bord de l’eau for orchestra. This thesis presents my reflections on the parameter of timbre as a mean of strengthening the cohesion of the musical discourse. More specifically, this thesis explores how to generate percussive timbres by non-percussion instruments, as well as non-percussive timbres by percussion instruments, in the context of a coherent and interesting musical discourse. Following an introduction where the origins, objectives and theoretical framework of this creative project are presented, the first chapter lays out my preparatory research, outlining the history of the evolution of timbre and the role of percussion instruments in Western music, as well as building a system to identify and qualify sounds for their percussive qualities. In the second chapter, the pieces are examined and examples are provided. These examinations illustrate how percussive and non-percussive timbres were used. The conclusion discusses the impacts of this creative project on my musical language and future works.
Bonnefoy, Carine. "Le jazz symphonique. Harmonie et spatialité." Thesis, Paris 4, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA040216.
Full textThis research relates to my pursuits as a pianist, composer and conductor, and concerns the development of the art of symphonic jazz. Symphonic jazz has represented a musical hybrid and a field of research around the soundscape of the orchestra. In many ways, it has been a forerunner in exploring the possibilities for creating music in which jazz and scholarly approaches and inquiries had entered into a productive dialectic. Hence the favoured approach to writing now integrates a variety of instruments as a fundamental revealer of musical structures. The composer creates a musical process that allows the material to express itself and spread its expressive and perceptive potential through comprehension of the orchestral space. Identifying and understanding the composer’s listening strategies for the listener, as well as the way he increases the meaning of the elements constituting the work is one of the main subjects of research
