As part of the St. Lawrence Seaway lock maintenance, the current practice is to perform concrete repairs entirely with reinforced concrete, using either ordinary concrete or high performance concrete (HPC) mixtures. However, with the recent advances in the field of ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC), the use of this new material is considered in view of improving the overall performance of repairs. The goal is to implement repairs capable of dissipating a lot of energy before breaking when a ship hits a concrete lock wall. Numerous rehabilitation materials and methods ha

Multi-Context Systems (MCS) are a powerful framework for interlinking possibly heterogeneous, autonomous knowledge bases, where information can be exchanged among knowledge bases by designated bridge rules with negation as failure. An acknowledged issue with MCS is inconsistency that arises due to the information exchange. To remedy this problem, inconsistency removal has been proposed in terms of repairs, which modify bridge rules based on suitable notions for diagnosis of inconsistency. In general, multiple diagnoses and repairs do exist; this leaves the user, who arguably may oversee the in

How a mound site is prepared; where the earth comes from; how it was moved; and the ways it was built up, shaped, packed down, and repaired are all important considerations for understanding not just the engineering of the mounds (and make no mistake, the native mound builders were sophisticated earthen engineers) but also the organization and mobilization of labor; the deployment of resources; and the social, cultural, and symbolic values of the builders. Abstract:
This chapter discusses the effects of metakaolin (MK) on geopolymer mortar and concrete industries. The research topics of MK-based geopolymer cover reaction mechanisms and kinetics. This chapter aims at augmenting knowledge about enhancing mechanical properties of geopolymer mortars/concrete using MK. Specifically, this chapter presents literature studies as well as current experimental studies which delineate the effect of MK on fresh and hardened-state properties of geopolymer mortars (GPMs). Properties and characteristics of metakaolin are explained followed by properties of fresh MK mortars. Properties of hardened MK concrete and durability aspects of MK mortars are explained. Applications of MK-based geopolymers and metakaolin-based geopolymers as repair materials are also included in this chapter. The results of using MK-based GPMs revealed improved workability, enhanced setting time, increased density, higher compressive strength, flexural strength, and resistance against acid attack than conventional ordinary portland cement mortar/concrete.

In the early years of the next regime, conservative courts will face off against liberal Democratic politicians. Courts are very unlikely to be able to do much to repair constitutional rot. Constitutional renewal must come from popular mobilizations and demands for reform, including constitutional reform. Growing frustration with the courts will lead to calls for reform of the federal judiciary. Reforms should aim at lowering the stakes of judicial appointments and assisting depolarization. Court-packing proposals achieve neither goal. Three better approaches are (1) instituting regular appointments to the Supreme Court; (2) achieving the equivalent of term limits for Supreme Court justices by changing quorum rules; (3) increasing the Court’s workload (instead of limiting its jurisdiction); and (4) using sunrise provisions that take effect in the future so that partisan advantages are harder to predict. Each of these proposals can be implemented constitutionally through ordinary legislation.

Abstract:
Chapter 16 summarizes the book’s main conclusions about dueling fact perceptions: the concept is broad, the causes deep, the consequences severe, and the potential correctives ineffective. The book examines a broader range of fact perceptions than previous studies of verifiable misperceptions. It demonstrates that the causes are internal (values) as well as external (partisan leadership and media) and that the consequences are social as well as political—fostering interpersonal disdain and political disengagement. Perhaps most disheartening, the book finds that the most discussed correctives of greater education and more extensive fact-checking are not effective. Citizens employ greater education to cement the connections between values and perceptions more firmly, and the university has lost its status as a bipartisan provider of consensus facts. Not only have facts and values become hopelessly intertwined, but the relationship between education and democracy has become corrupted. The psychology of ordinary citizens, who project their priors onto their perceptions, has created a realignment of trust and a fracturing of facts, which no known reform is likely to repair.

The first is the ordinary law of negligence, and the second is the system of strict liability introduced by the Consumer Protection Act 1987, as required by a European Directive (85/374/EEC). The latter is limited to personal injuries and to damage to private property, so there are still many cases where a claimant has to rely on negligence. Also, the Act applies only to certain kinds of defendants (‘producers’), and a claimant will need to use negligence if, for example, he is injured by a defectively repaired product. One important point is that both systems apply only to damage to goods other than the defective product and not to damage which the defective product causes to itself: that is a matter solely for the law of contract.

Abstract:
As in any city recovering from disaster, Berlin, following World War II, had the opportunity to reconnect with its local traditions. The restoration of political, social, and cultural forms offered a kind of reconnection, and so did the tangible reconstruction of buildings, streets, and utility lines. Any revival of tradition was, however, enormously complicated by two problems of continuity, one temporal, one geographical—and both of them political and philosophical. First was the question of historical continuity. On the one hand, there was a desire to rebuild: to repair a damaged but extant city or, more broadly, to continue the best local traditions in architectural style, social policy, and economic development. On the other hand, everyone in charge was determined to break demonstratively with the immediate past, that is, with the Third Reich, but they did not agree about which cultural, architectural, or urbanistic traditions were the Nazi ones. The second complication arose from the fact that the city was soon divided between East and West, governed by two ideologically opposed regimes, each determined to claim the legacy of pre-Nazi Berlin, to display the clearer break with Hitler, and to prove its cultural and political superiority. Under these complicated circumstances, the rebuilding of Berlin became one of the most visibly contested venues of the early Cold War, even as it remained a matter of basic comfort and prosperity for ordinary Berliners. The fact of Berlin’s destruction in the Second World War is well known, but merely to ask the question of what caused that destruction is to plunge into contested territory. In the Soviet-occupied East, for example, the official line at first informed Germans that the destruction of their land was the legacy of Hitler and the Nazis. Later, as the Cold War heated up, they were more likely to hear blame cast upon the “Anglo-American terror bombers” (with no mention of the secondary role of Red Army artillery in the battle of Berlin). In theWestern zones of occupation, a version of the former story remained the official one, with perhaps more emphasis on the collective responsibility of the German people as a whole for the deeds of the Nazis.

Urban design is no longer limited to physical space but starts to carry out multi-angle and multi-level comprehensive consideration on the social and spatial problems of symbiosis. In this context, the innovative social governance and the quality improvement of urban public space that highlights the role of the public have become hot topics. As the main body of city users, ordinary people entering into the deep and substantial participat

Abstract:
This paper reports short-term performance measurement of a hybrid photovoltaic/fuel cell power supply system at Kirby Cove Campground in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, California. The system operated reliably for two years from June 1999 to July 2001. During this period, the campground host load was met with a combination of solar power and power from the fuel cell. In August of 2001, reports of power outages justified an in-depth investigation. Data is reported over 13.5 days from September 2 to September 15, 2001. Over this period, energy delivered by the photovoltaic array totaled 42

Negative pressure is one of the metastable states of liquids at which it can be extended up to a certain limit without a gap of continuity. There are numerous experimental studies where a negative pressure up to 40 MPa has been obtained at laboratory conditions. However, these results of the experimental works were not practically implemented, as real liquids both in the nature and the technological processes contain impurities. Under certain kinetic and hydrodynamic conditions the waves of negative pressure in real liquids (crude oil, water, and water-based solutions) were observed. The wave
