Abstract:
In 1993, then OSU President John Byrne declared that: “All Extension Service faculty, county agents as well as specialists, will be assigned academic colleges, and will have an academic appointment in the appropriate college.” The selection of the academic home would involve a mutual agreement between the individual and the department and would take into consideration the faculty member's academic training, experience, and work assignment. The implementation of this decision was completed by July 1995. In the College of Agricultural Sciences, this assignment of faculty to academic homes was accommodated by adding county agents to the faculty of existing departments. The Dept. of Horticulture faculty numbers nearly doubled, with an increase from 34 to 58. The department head is now very involved in the annual review and salary administration of extension field faculty. Campus-based faculty are now involved in all of the hiring, promotion, and tenure decisions for extension field faculty and vice versa. Field faculty participate in departmental decision making. The change in the number and diversity of faculty in the department is a unique effort to unify programmatic focus for extension, research, and teaching at OSU. As a work in progress, many issues are being addressed including full faculty participation in the decision-making process, communication, evaluation of scholarship, and building departmental community. Successes, pitfalls, and challenges ahead will be discussed and illustrated.

Abstract:
In an era of shrinking Extension resources the question of how to reach large audiences with horticulture information is a pressing concern. Now in its 23rd year, Oklahoma Gardening is an example of spreading Extension information to large audiences through television. Oklahoma Gardening is produced cooperatively by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, the Dept. of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, and the Dept. of Ag. Education, Communication, 4-H and Youth Development. The show offers traditional how-to information about gardening, lawn care, and landscaping, as well as up-to-date university research on horticulture. Extension specialists from other disciplines such as entomology, plant pathology, human environmental sciences, and soils frequently contribute to the show fostering cooperation between these programs. Weekly, Oklahoma Gardening reaches more than 175,000 viewers in Oklahoma and surrounding states. County Extension Educators are kept informed of programming and provided with support materials for each weekly show. They are also encouraged to provide input as to content and needs in their particular area of the state. In addition, consumer horticulture programming and show content are closely tied and the show serves as a bulletin board for horticulture related events coordinated by the extension service.

Abstract:
In 1993, Carolina Nurseries and the Dept. of Horticulture at Clemson Univ. entered into a partnership for a research and development program to solve short- and long-term production problems in the ornamental nursery industry. Carolina Nurseries, located near Charleston, S.C., is a 110-ha commercial container-grown landscape plant nursery that sells >12 million units yearly. Research is conducted on site in a specially designed area that provides nursery conditions and control of other variables, including water and pesticide applications. An on-site graduate student works cooperatively with faculty on campus and manages the research area, collects data, maintains the projects using standard nursery practices, interacts with Carolina Nurseries personnel, and initiates needed studies. Over the past 6 years, research diversity increased with cooperative efforts from faculty in the Depts. of Entomology, Pathology, and Agricultural Engineering. In addition, cooperative studies with faculty members with Univ. of Georgia, Michigan State Univ., and North Carolina State Univ. have been completed. Research results were presented to the nursery industry at research update meetings at the research area site. Approximately 200 attendees from commercial nurseries and horticulture-related companies in surrounding states attended the 1998 research update. Surveys collected at research updates are helpful in tailoring research to the specific needs of the nursery industry, and are the basis for some of the current research projects. Research results are also in published in the Southern Nursery Association Research Proceedings, Journal of Environmental Horticulture, and The South Carolina Nurseryman Newsletter.

Abstract:
Abstract Flue-cured tobacco was planted on the James T. Smith farm in Wayne Co., NC on 23 Apr. Plots of 0.02 acre (4 rows X 57 ft) were separated laterally by a vacant 5th row and on each end by turn alleys of 16 ft. Treatments were established in a RCB design with 4 replications. Just prior to treatment, a moderate natural infestation of budworms was augmented by artificial infestation of 10 plants in each of the 1st and 3rd rows of each plot. A single 2-d old larva (from the colony maintained by the Dept. of Entomology, N.C. State University) was transferred from artificial diet to each plant. Larvae were placed into the bud to simulate an established infestation. Treatments were applied on 3 Jun using a tractor-mounted sprayer (with the exception of Dipel 10 G) pressurized by a roller pump powered by the tractor PTO. Spray was delivered through 3 solid-cone nozzles (TG-1, TG-2, TG-1) per row at 60 psi and 37.5 gpa. Treatments were applied between 2:50 pm and 5:00 pm EDT. Diatect was treated as a wettable powder and sprayed. Dipel 10G was applied by hand directly to the bud of each plant. Air temperature was approximately 80° F and winds were light to moderate (3-7 mph). All plants (excluding the first and last) in rows 1 and 3 were checked for budworm infestation on the day of treatment and 4 and 11 DAT. These plants were rated for budworm damage 15 DAT. Individual plants were examined and an estimate of leaf area lost to budworm feeding made. Damage was scored as follows: 0 = no damage; 1 = less than 1.0 leaf equivalent lost; 2 = 1.0 - 2.0 leaf equivalents; 3 = more than 2.0 leaf equivalents lost; 4 = plant topped by budworm feeding. Average damage ratings were calculated by plot. After harvest and curing, tobacco from each plot was weighed and graded by a government grader. Grades were converted to a quality index (1-100, 100 high). All variables were subjected to analysis of variance and treatment means compared (where appropriate) using an LSD test. Before analysis, the proportion of plants infested was transformed to the arcsine of square root of proportion. Data shown in the table are not transformed and proportion of plants infested is presented as percentage of plants infested.

HUMAN TISSUE AND BIOLOGIC SPECIMEN RESOURCES NCI - Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) The NCI Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) provides normal, benign, precancerous, and cancerous human tissue to the scientific community for biomedical research. Specimens are collected according to the investigator’s individual protocol. Information provided with the specimens includes routine histopathologic and demographic data. NIA - SWAN Repository (longitudinal, multiethnic study of women at midlife including the menopausal transition) The SWAN Repository is a biologic specimen bank of the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN). The function of the IMR is to select, import, cryopreserve, maintain, and distribute these important strains of mice to the research community. Over 800 mutant stocks have been accepted by the IMR. They have been extensively and longitudinally characterized for general health variables, blood chemistry, food intake, and body weight. Diabetic monkeys are tested daily for urine glucose and ketone levels, and prediabetic monkeys are tested weekly. Data for some of the monkeys extend as far back as 15 years. This unique resource is available for collaborative studies. ODARC has a significant amount of stored tissue collected at necropsy and stored blood/plasma collected longitudinally. The function of the IMR is to select, import, cryopreserve, maintain, and distribute these important strains of mice to the research community. They have been extensively and longitudinally characterized for general health variables, blood chemistry, food intake, and body weight. Diabetic monkeys are tested daily for urine glucose and ketone levels, and prediabetic monkeys are tested weekly. Data for some of the monkeys extend as far back as 15 years. Specimens are collected according to the investigator’s individual protocol. Information provided with the specimens includes routine histopathologic and demographic data. The SWAN Repository contains more than 350,000 blood and urine specimens generated from the study participants’ annual visits (8 visits to date), at which time medical and health history, psychosocial measures, biological measures, and anthropometric data were and are being collected. They have been extensively and longitudinally characterized for general health variables, blood chemistry, food intake, and body weight. Diabetic monkeys are tested daily for urine glucose and ketone levels, and prediabetic monkeys are tested weekly. Data for some of the monkeys extend as far back as 15 years. This unique resource is available for collaborative studies. ODARC has a significant amount of stored tissue collected at necropsy and stored blood/plasma collected longitudinally. The URL is http://ipad.primate.wisc.edu. NIA - Obesity, Diabetes and Aging Animal Resource (USF-ODARC) The NIA supports a colony of aged rhesus macaques, many of which are obese and/or diabetic. This is a long-term colony of monkeys housed at the University of South Florida’s Obesity, Diabetes and Aging Research Center. They have been extensively and longitudinally characterized for general health variables, blood chemistry, food intake, and body weight. Diabetic monkeys are tested daily for urine glucose and ketone levels, and prediabetic monkeys are tested weekly. Data for some of the monkeys extend as far back as 15 years. This unique resource is available for collaborative studies. ODARC has a significant amount of stored tissue collected at necropsy and stored blood/plasma collected longitudinally. Serial blood collection or tissue collection at necropsy can also be performed prospectively. Testing and imaging can also be performed on the monkeys. Miscellaneous Resources NCRR - National Gene Vector Laboratories (NGVLs) The National Gene Vector Laboratories (NGVLs), with core funding from NCRR, serve as a resource for researchers to obtain adequate quantities of clinical-grade vectors for human gene transfer protocols. The vector types include retrovirus, lentivirus, adenovirus, adeno-associated virus, herpes-virus, and DNA plasmids. The NGVLs consist of three vector production centers at: Baylor College of Medicine; City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute; and Indiana University, which also serves as the Coordinating Center for all the laboratories. Two additional laboratories conduct toxicology studies for NGVL-approved investigators. These laboratories are located at the Southern Research Institute and the University of Florida. NCRR - General Clinical Research Centers (GCRCs) The General Clinical Research Centers (GCRCs) are a national network of 82 centers that provide optimal settings for medical investigators to conduct safe, controlled, state-of-the-art in-patient and out-patient studies of both children and adults. GCRCs also provide infrastructure and resources that support several career development opportunities. Investigators who have research project funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other peer-reviewed sources may apply to use GCRCs. Because the GCRCs support a full spectrum of patient-oriented scientific inquiry, researchers who use these centers can benefit from collaborative, multidisciplinary research opportunities.
