Transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-μSR) spectra have been recorded for free radicals formed by positive muon irradiation of nine different divalent germanium compounds. Muon-electron hyperfine coupling constants (Aμ) were determined from the spectra and compared with values predicted from density functional theory molecular orbital (DFT-MO) calculations on the muoniated radicals formed by muonium addition to the germanium atom. The muon hyperfine constants for germylenes containing N–Ge bonds are generally quite large, from 593 to 942 MHz, indicating strong interaction between the muon an

This article reviews the excited-state quenching, pro-vitamin A activity and anticarcinogenicity of carotenes and xanthophylls in relation to their chemical structures. Excited-state quenching improved with the length of the conjugated chain structure. Pro-vitamin A activity was dependent on the presence of at least one beta-ionyl ring structure. The effectiveness of carotenoids as antioxidants depended on their ability to trap peroxyl radicals with production of resonance-stabilized carotenyl radicals. Abstract:
Introduction. The free radical cyclisation reaction onto an unsaturated bond is a well known synthetic pathway, where a wide range of cyclic compounds can be produced form acyclic starting materials. Up until recent years, free radical addition to multiple bonds other than carbon-carbon had been little studied. Nowadays there is much information available of radical addition to carbonyl, thiocarbonyl, nitrile and oxime ether (C=NOR) functional groups. However there has been surprisingly little detailed study of similar reactions involving imines (C=NR) or hydrazones (C=NNHR). Monocyclisation.

The effect of substituents on the carbon-hydrogen bond reactivity in free radical additions to hexaf1uoropropene has been investegated. The reactivity of cyclic ethers, amines and amides is discussed in terms of the stereoelectronic effect. The reactivity of tetrahydrofuran and N-methylpyrrolidine towards hexaf1uoropropene under uninitiated conditions has also been demonstrated. The work presented in this thesis describes several new and novel radical macrocyclisation-transannulation cascade reactions directed towards the single step construction of ring-D aromatic steroid ring systems. The introduction introduces the steroid class of natural products, their biosynthesis and previous literature strategies towards their construction. The ring-D aromatic steroids, together with their possible total synthesis via a novel freeradical cascade strategy, are then discussed. Domestic heating and cooling will more and more have to rely on heat pumps in order to support a more rational use of primary energy consumption. The heat pump market is mainly dominated by electrically driven vapour compression cycles and by thermally driven sorption processes. The drawback of electrically driven vapour compression cycle is their dependence on an electrical grid and the fact that they increase the winter or summer electricity peak demands. Hence, a thermally driven vapour compression cycle would offer substantial advantages and flexibility to the end user for heating and cool
