Full textEnergy storage systems are of high interest and in the last decades their demand grew exponentially. In particular mobile devices, Full and Hybrid Electric Vehicles and smart grids are looking for tailored solutions. Because of new energy efficiency and environmental guidelines, researchers are called to find new solutions for energy storage taking in account costs, availability and environmental impact. Nowadays inorganic materials for LIBs needs scarce and, occasionally, toxic elements. Furthermore, the production and process of mixed oxides materials involves energy-demanding fabrication routes. LIBs technology is at the pole since decades and big improvements were made mainly in the field of process and engineering optimization. No breakthrough technology seems to be close to enter the market in the next years. Organic materials offer different advantages over inorganic ones. E.g. they are easy to tailor and composed mainly of C, H, N, O and S, all abundant elements. It has been also reported that organics can be synthesized from reactants produced from biomass wastes. Among them all, pigments are cheap, crystal and insoluble. Another family of pigments is the one of Prussian Blue Analogues. Their affinity to either organic, because of the similarities with MOFs, or inorganic compounds is still debated. PBAs offer several advantages: cheapness, open framework structure and tailorable electrochemical properties. In this work, we are going to present the results of the studies realized on three different organic small molecule pigments, perylenediimide, Indanthrone and quinacridone, as well as two chromates based PBAs.

Full textIn this thesis an ultra-sensitive and selective sensor for dopamine (DA) by means of a neuro-inspired device platform without the need of a specific recognition moiety is demonstrated. DA is a neurotransmitter of catecholamines family that controls functions of cardiovascular, renal, hormonal and central nervous systems. DA deficit is a hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (PD), due to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. The sensor is a whole organic device featuring two electrodes made of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate – PEDOT:PSS – directly patterned through laser ablation on a polydymethylsiloxane – PDMS – flexible substrate. One electrode is pulsed with a train of voltage square waves (-200 mV with a frequency of 500 Hz for 1s), to mimic the pre-synaptic neuron behavior, while the other is used to record the displacement current, mimicking the post-synaptic neuron. The current response exhibits the features of synaptic Short-Term Plasticity (STP) with facilitating or depressing response according to the stimulus frequency. We found that the resulting current decreases with a characteristic time, τSTP , depending on DA concentration in solution. The sensor detects [DA] down to 1 pM range. We assess the sensor also in the presence of several moieties physiologically present in cerebrospinal fluid or extracellular fluids, i.e. ascorbic acid, uric acid, 3-methoxytyramine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, homovanillic acid, serotonin, epinephrine and norepinephrine. Our detection strategy successfully discriminates DA from the other analytes in model solutions (i.e. Phosphate Saline Buffer). The sensor appears still more sensitive to DA than to the others, even in presence of moieties with similar chemical structures. The synapse appears ultrasensitive to DA (from physiological to pathological concentrations) and selective thanks to the interaction mechanism with PEDOT:PSS. DFT calculations on PEDOT:PSS/metabolite clusters hint to a correlation between the STP response and stronger non-covalent interactions between DA and PEDOT:PSS, specifically electrostatic and hydrogen bonding of DA ammonium end group with sulfonate. The whole organic synapse, being biocompatible, soft and flexible, is attractive for implantable devices aimed to real-time monitoring of DA concentration in bodily fluids, to be used as a diagnostic tool, for instance, in chronic neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.

Full textOrganic and Inorganic Thin-Film Transistors (O-TFTs and I-TFTs, respectively) have been widely studied during the last years, due to appealing properties such as low-cost fabrication processes, flexibility, lightweight and (semi-) transparency. Therefore, to help the study and development of such technologies, we presented and discussed a new simple and easy to use technique for parameter extraction in thin film transistors. We experimentally validate our procedure by performing a complete characterization of both organic and inorganic transistors featuring dihexyl-quaterthiophene and indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) as semiconducting materials, respectively. However, the reliability of IGZO TFTs are not fully understood and for this reason, we studied the impact of stair-case gate bias stress on them and we estimated the breakdown voltage for different channel aspect ratios. Our results show that the breakdown voltage exhibits a remarkable dependence on the channel width, while exposing no, or marginal, dependence on the channel length. In order to ensure the accuracy of the above-mentioned results, the used model require that working principle of the analysed devices must be well known at priori. Unfortunately, in organic and amorphous electronic this hardly ever the case. In particular, we focused on the non-linear parasitic effects in the region between the Source/Drain electrodes and the transistor channel. We can represent this region as metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure. Hence, we propose a model that can describe the parasitic voltage drop at the contacts of the OTFT and at the same time we explained the properties of the MIM devices. Furthermore, we proposed an enhanced model that consider also the effects of the surface roughness on the metal semiconductor interface, and, by means of simulations, we highlighted the macroscopic effect of the surface roughness. Among the thin film transistor technology, researchers have spent many efforts in the healthcare area, working with different polymers and small molecules where organic semiconductors are at the interface with an ionic solution. In addition, the improvement of water gated devices, such as organic electrochemical transistors and electrolyte-gated organic field effect transistors (EGOFETs), is paving the way to the development of new biosensors. Hence, we presented a general equivalent circuit model for the metal/organic semiconductor /liquid/metal system. To underline the importance of our model, we reported two cases of study of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of devices featuring NaCl and MilliQ water as gate medium, showing that both cases can be considered as a particular case of the general model presented in this thesis. Among the different organic materials, TIPS-Pentacene was recently employed to make EGOFETs, which are promising devices for biosensing applications. For this reason, we fabricated EGOFETs using TIPS-pentacene as active material. Despite the organic semiconductor being deposited in air by drop casting, our EGOFETs showed performance comparable with state-of-the-art technologies. In addition, we successfully investigated, the biocompatibility of the material, promoting the use of TIPS-pentacene-based EGOFETs for biosensing applications. Such devices can be used also as Reference-Less EGOGET (RL-EGOFETs) that are a new candidate for in vivo stimulation and recording of cells activity. Therefore, we characterized the fabricated EGOFETs in Reference-Less configuration, shedding light on the self-polarization mechanism, demonstrating that EGOFETs can feature a field-effect behavior even without the presence of the gate electrode. In summary, the works and the results of this thesis allowed a deeper and accurate study of thin film devices. Hence, we believe that the results here represented could help the in improvement of state of art devices and in the development of new devices.

Full textThe activity of my PhD concerns both the development of an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of soluble DNA based on a two-electrode set-up, and the study of a bidirectional organic thin film transistor (OTFT) for the stimulation and the recording of the bioelectrical activity of the primary neurons. In the first case, my research was focused mainly on the fabrication of gold ultra-flat surfaces for the electrodes, and the comparison with surfaces coming from industrial fabrication methods. I developed the DNA two-electrode sensor and I demonstrated its reliability in correlation with results obtained with standard three-electrodes configuration. In the second part, instead, I studied the fabrication of the organic device with perylene diimide as organic material, monitoring its resistance in function of the physiological environment and the functionality of the OTFT as recorder and stimulator of the electrogenic activity of the dorsal root ganglion neurons.

Full textWater plays a vital role in sustain life on earth. However, the quality of the water resources is seriously affected by the pollution caused by industrial, municipal and agricultural activities. To remediate the toxic organic and inorganic contaminants in water, several physical, chemical and biological water treatment methods are employed. However, current water treatment technologies present limited performance, materials of high cost, and need highly energy consuming infrastructure. In this scenario, the utilization of advanced materials and innovative methods could be helpful for reducing the cost and enhancing the performance of the wastewater treatment. One of most promising method is the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). The AOPs use semiconductor materials that are activated by the UV or Visible light irradiation that are able to mineralize organic water pollutants. Currently, commercial available photocatalysts are mostly used in slurry or powder form, but this requires post-treatment processes in order to avoid secondary pollution, causing the increase of the overall treatment cost. To face up such limitation and to resolve problems related to the post-treatment process, the immobilization of the photocatalysts on solid compact matrices is a feasible solution. In particular, the use of polymeric matrices as host solid materials may result in a final system that combines the photocatalytic properties of the semiconductor component with the mechanical properties, usability and cost-effectiveness of the polymers.

Full textThe pursuit of a clean energy source is a goal for the scientific community that should be achieved in the following decades. In recent years, hydrogen has gained much attention in the scientific community as a renewable energy carrier. However, the main goal in the energetic field is to move from the production of grey hydrogen (obtained using fossil sources with the subsequent emission of carbon dioxide) to the evolution of green hydrogen (produced with zero carbon footprint). During my Ph. D., I have focused on different topics regarding the use of organic dyes as visible light photosensitizers in devices for the production of solar fuels through efficient light harvesting. I investigated both photocatalytic (PC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications. For these applications, I considered both covalent and non-covalent approaches. In the PC application, I investigated only a non-covalent approach between the dye and the sacrificial electron donor (SED). I decided not to investigate a covalent interaction because since the system cannot regenerate the SED, it would have led to the loss of the dye as well. Regardless, the establishment of supramolecular interactions that favored the photocatalytic activity confirmed the success of the new proposed design. In the PEC application, I investigated both approaches. I present the first example of calix[4]arene-based dyes employed in photoanodes of PEC cells to exploit their host-guest capabilities. However, the evidence of the establishment of either beneficial or fruitless host-guest interaction between the dyes and the water oxidation catalyst (WOC) is still under investigation. The second non-covalent approach investigated is the π-π interaction between a graphene-functionalized dye and a suitable modified WOC. All the further characterization and PEC applications are in progress. On the other hand, the covalent approach should be the most stable, and with the immobilization of the WOC at a fixed distance from the semiconductor surface, it is possible to avoid the establishment of a detrimental interaction with the semiconductor. We presented the first example of organic-dye-based dyads for photoanode application. These molecules showed excellent efficiencies in oxygen evolution being the highest concerning the actual state of the art for similar systems. The other covalent design proposed has been obtained during my Ph. D. period abroad at Yale University. This innovative design failed in the PEC application, but this molecule exhibited very good performances as simple WOC in electrochemical cells. This means that this WOC has the right potential to oxidize water and can be used in combination with an external source of energy, such as solar panels. However further investigation in the dye portion is required to achieve a better charge transfer for the PEC applications.
