Au cours d'un dialogue, les interlocuteurs coordonnent leurs comportements linguistiques afin d'atteindre une compréhension mutuelle (Clark, 1996 ; Garrod & Anderson, 1987). Ils peuvent par exemple adapter leur usage des mots dans le contexte de la conversation, afin de les faire correspondre à ceux de leur partenaire (Brennan & Clark, 1996).
