Hector's dolphins are threatened with local extinction by entanglement in coastal gillnets. This thesis provides data on population biology, social organization and behaviour of Hector's dolphins that help assess human impacts on their populations. To estimate population growth, I integrated anatomical studies which estimated longevity and age at first reproduction, with photographic field studies which estimated reproductive rate and survival rate. I studied the behaviour and ecology of social organization in a Caribbean surgeonfish, the blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus). In chapter 1,1 identify and describe the social modes exhibited by adult blue tangs and include the first description of adult territoriality in this species. The breeding ecology, social organization and communicatory behaviour of the brown creeper (Finschia novaeseelandiae) were studied. Brown creepers lay large eggs, young develop slowly and incubation and nestling periods are long. Mortality in adults is low but high in juveniles. I suggest that the species' breeding strategy is an adaptation to the mild coastal climate of New Zealand. Members of breeding pairs remain together and defend territories throughout the winter.
