Abstract:
THE REGARD AN ORGANIZATION holds toward its staff nurses is reflected in its organizational chart. In most hospitals, each service holds an equal position on the chart somewhere under the president. In turn, each of these services has its own chart, which, in part, illustrates the chain of command. The organizational chart often identifies lines of promotion and indicates how positions report directly and indirectly to others. A typical organizational chart in nursing has the chief of the department (vice president) at the top and directors underneath, followed by managers (Figure 1). The managers may have one or more departments listed under them, depicting the position of staff nurses in the organization.

Abstract:
Students frequently struggle to understand the differences among various types of organizational structures and how these differences affect organizational processes and outcomes. In the exercise described in this article, students are given a list of jobs from a medical rehabilitation center and asked to create an organizational chart. Students are thereby encouraged to consider how various jobs relate to each other and to customers (in this case, the patients). Students evaluate the charts that they and their peers have created to determine how well each structure supports coordination, collaboration, customer responsiveness and job satisfaction. The exercise is appropriate for undergraduate, graduate, and professional learners.

AbstractAttempts at reconstructing the nature and organizational structure of the Essene movement have largely been based on the manuscripts of the Damascus Document and the Rule of the Community. This article calls attention to a number of additional fragmentary documents from Cave 4, and examines the challenges they pose and how they relate to various theories regarding the nature of the communities behind them. A fundamental question is to what extent the so-called rule texts reflect actual historical circumstances, and this question is intrinsically linked to the question of the function of the texts in the communities that used them. A study of the organizational terms used in the documents reveals that these terms were used in a variety of ways, and while some terms may reflect actual historical circumstances, others probably did not. This result has implications for the feasibility of using these texts for historical reconstruction.

Abstract:
Introduction:The Dallas Convention Center received over 3800 evacuees because of the unprecedented flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. A multidisciplinary medical clinic was established onsite to address evacuee needs for medical evaluations, emergency care, chronic disease management, pharmaceuticals, durable medical equipment, and local health services integration. To operate efficiently, the Dallas Mega-Shelter Emergency Operations Center (EOC) worked with the Mega-Shelter Medical Clinic (MMC) under a fluid incident command (IC) structure that was National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliant. Iterations of MMC IC demonstrated maturations in organizational structure while supporting MMC operations that varied from rigid NIMS doctrine.Aim:To explore the use of a fluid IC structure at a large evacuation medical shelter after Hurricane Harvey. Methods:We observed evolutions of IC organizational charts and operational impacts. Results:Modifications through just-in-time iterations of the IC organizational chart were posted and reviewed with MMC IC and EOC sector chiefs. Changes in the organizational chart were noted to improve identification of logistical needs, supply delivery, coordinate with other agencies, and to make decisions for resource typing and personnel utilization. Adaptations also improved communication, which led to timely situational awareness and reporting accuracy.Discussion:MMC medical services were improved by allowing modifications and adaptations to NIMS compliant MMC IC organizational roles and duty assignments. The fluidity of IC structure with ability for just-in-time modifications directly impacted the provision of disaster medical services. Unique situational awareness, coordination of care pathways within the local innate health infrastructure, compliance with health service regulations, and personnel resource typing all contributed to and benefitted from these IC modifications. MMC and EOC IC collaboration facilitated effective communication and maintained an appropriate span of control and efficient activity reporting.

Abstract:
This paper proposes the CorpRank algorithm to extract social hierarchies from electronic communication data. The algorithm computes a ranking score for each user as a weighted combination of the number of emails, the number of responses, average response time, clique scores, and several degree and centrality measures. The algorithm uses principal component analysis to calculate the weights of the features. This score ranks users according to their importance, and its output is used to reconstruct an organization chart. We illustrate the algorithm over real-world data using the Enron corporation’s e-mail archive. Compared to the actual corporate work chart, compensation lists, judicial proceedings, and analyzing the major players involved, the results show promise.

Identification of the assignable causes of process variability and the restriction and elimination of their influence are the main goals of statistical process control (SPC). Identification of these causes is associated with so called tests for special causes or runs tests. From the time of the formulation of the first set of such rules (Western Electric rules) several different sets have been created (Nelson rules, Boeing AQS rules, Trietsch rules). This paper deals with the comparison analysis of these sets of rules, their basic statistical properties and the mistakes accompanying their application using SW support. At the end of this paper some recommendations for the correct application of the runs tests are formulated.

Abstract:
Introduction: The design stage and preparations for construction include the development of construction schedules needed to justify the duration of construction works. Methods: Based on probabilistic scheduling, a multitude of solutions can be generated for each implementation roadmap (progress chart). These decisions can be defined as optimistic, most probable or likely, and pessimistic. Rational roadmaps are selected in accordance with benchmarking. Simple and discounted payback periods are used as frequently applied criteria included in the system of evaluating the economic effectiveness of investment projects. Based on identifying the given indicators of project evaluation, a method of designing probabilistic construction progress charts has been developed; the latter serve as the basis for devising respective organizational-technological solutions. Results: The design of optimistic, pessimistic, and most probable construction roadmaps (schedules or progress charts) enables the use of a developed model for probabilistic prognostication of future production risks affecting the delay of construction completion.

Purpose: Improvement measures are taken unceasingly in organizations in order to optimize the obtained results in each sphere of a company’s functioning. This article presents the results of an improvement process conducted for a welding operation in the given production process. Design/methodology/approach: Taking advantage of the Kaizen approach, the article describes the results of this process and its visualization, which has been conducted with the help of a Spaghetti Chart tool. Findings: Initially, it has demonstrated that the analysis of real pathways of product value creation at the given worksite through application of the mapped-out changes brings about measurable effects. The applied worksite reorganization allowed for a limitation of an employee’s excessive movements at the worksite. In order to conduct a benchmark – both states “before” and “after” the introduction of improvement changes have been juxtaposed. Research limitations/implications: The presented analysis has a temporally and spatially limited dimension - this simultaneously being an impulse to extend research in the future. While conducting an analysis of an operator’s work, the problem must be dealt with in a broad perspective - we conduced type case study, so this is the limitation. Practical implications: The conducted analysis has taken place in real organizational conditions, using the example of a functioning worksite. Working with the “continuous improvement” approach, the instruments for development have been initiated in all spheres and levels of the given organization. Line employees have been motivated by the management to carry out single modernizations at the given worksite, which has influenced their own development. This in turn has stimulated their conscious need for active participation in the process of change. Originality/value: The conducted analysis has taken place in real organizational conditions, using the example of a functioning worksite.

Abstract:
In today's scenario of accelerated globalization, an outstanding case is that of Brazil's sugar and alcohol sector which, quite deregulated, has received considerable foreign investment motivated by the large global demand for ethanol as a source of fuel and by the competitive quality of the domestic product. It is important to underline that even when this sector shows good prospects, these enterprises should have a consistent strategy to enter the world markets with a solid internationalization plan. By using the Case Study Methodology at Brenco, the Brazilian Renewable Energy Company, this paper sought to outline the organization chart of this entity, regarded as an international project, with the aim of identifying the existence of an advanced innovative business model within this sector, characterized by large groups of local enterprises, directed toward the domestic market. Among the main results obtained it is notable that the organization chart is in line with the goal of being a global enterprise and with the target of becoming, by 2015, one of the sector's five largest enterprises.

Abstract:
As a system of understanding reality, the organizational culture and symbolism perspective is similar to Romanticism. Both movements arose out of the recognition of the inadequacies of rationalism, and both attempt to chart areas of the human experience through the imagination in terms of metaphors, symbols, and myths. A comparison of the two, therefore, serves to explain the rise of the cultural and symbolic perspective in organizational studies and its theoretical basis. Further, the comparison at once suggests the potential of the symbolist perspective as well as its problems, especially relativism and the love of distance, while indicating how that perspective may evolve as a total system.

Abstract:
It is perhaps a truism that modern organizational theory has tended to objectify the colonized nations, and the subjects of imperialism. Even the critical traditions in OT tend to be mired in Eurocentric assumptions, and many of the issues that affected the ‘victims of globalization’ simply did not figure in OT debates till the 1980s. In the 1990s, when organizational theorists focusing on workers and subjects from the poorer South began expressly to ‘write back’, i.e. theorize eloquently on how they could restore their own agency in organizational life, they found a contingent ally in Organization. Not that the Journal did not have its blind spots in this regard, but since its inception in 1994, it has published a number of articles that sought to give voice to those who decentred OT’s Eurocentric assumptions. In this brief essay, we attempt to chart that partnership, and speak about a possible role for Organization in furthering this quest.

Crew, Louie. "Importing Vocabularies to Describe Literary Structure." Journal of Technical Writing and Communication 22, no. 1 (January 1992): 77–93. http://dx.doi.org/10.2190/xd1j-3whq-leqb-8rf4.

Abstract:
With the vocabularies of their own disciplines, students majoring in technical subjects can access fresh insights into how writers write. For example, the symbols of computer flowcharts may bring insights when used to monitor rhetoric. Charts of organizational hierarchies, such as those that many corporate executives use, may illuminate equally well the shifting hierarchies of the characters in a work of fiction. Graphs and charts of syntactic and lexical networks may reveal the hidden structures of a narrative. An engineering major needs to see how a writer engineers words, a business major to see how a writer establishes hierarchies, a computer science major to see how a writer devises the flow of rhetoric. If we encourage students to explain literature with the professional vocabularies of their own disciplines, we can train them as lively apprentices, not as drudges. If we English teachers heed our students' special vocabularies, we may expect students to examine our own jargon more thoughtfully, such as the vocabulary by which we chart subordination and punctuation. Literature is everyone's heritage. No discipline monopolizes the critical insight or the vocabulary with which to articulate it.

Abstract:
While many disciplines embrace the possibilities that Big Data present for advancing scholarship and practice, organizational and management research has yet to realize Big Data’s potential. In an effort to chart this newfound territory, we briefly describe the principal drivers and key characteristics of Big Data. We then review a broad range of opportunities and risks that are related to the Big Data paradigm, the data itself, and the associated analytical methods. For each, we provide research ideas and recommendations on how to embrace the potentials or address the concerns. Our assessment shows that Big Data, as a paradigm, can be a double- edged sword, capable of significantly advancing our field but also causing backlash if not utilized properly. Our review seeks to inform individual research practices as well as a broader policy agenda in order to advance organizational and management research as a scientifically rigorous and professionally relevant field.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the complex relationships between transformational leadership, organizational innovativeness, and motor carrier performance.Design/methodology/approachA covariance‐based structural equation model was developed, tested and validated to explain the effect of leadership style and innovativeness on motor carrier performance. The authors’ hypotheses were tested using responses from 158 North American motor carriers.FindingsThe results support a direct as well as an indirect positive relationship between transformational leadership and organizational performance. Through the theoretical lens of dynamic capabilities theory, the results indicate that leaders motivate organizational change based on their own idiosyncrasies and perceptions of the environment.Research limitations/implicationsThis research was limited by its focus on the motor carrier industry and may limit the generalizability of the findings. While the sample of motor carriers was selected at random, the individuals within each of the organizations were purposively selected based on their positions.Practical implicationsThe results indicate that the proactive leader who makes calculated changes is likely to chart a course towards enhanced organizational innovativeness and performance that may provide the firm with a sustained competitive advantage.Originality/valueThis is one of the few works investigating leadership style and innovativeness in the motor carrier industry.

Abstract:
Statistical monitoring tools are well established in the literature, creating organizational cultures such as Six Sigma or Total Quality Management. Nevertheless, most of this literature is based on the normality assumption, e.g., based on the law of large numbers, and brings limitations towards truncated processes as open questions in this field. This work was motivated by the register of elements related to the water particles monitoring (relative humidity), an important source of moisture for the Copiapó watershed, and the Atacama region of Chile (the Atacama Desert), and presenting high asymmetry for rates and proportions data. This paper proposes a new control chart for interval data about rates and proportions (symbolic interval data) when they are not results of a Bernoulli process. The unit-Lindley distribution has many interesting properties, such as having only one parameter, from which we develop the unit-Lindley chart for both classical and symbolic data. The performance of the proposed control chart is analyzed using the average run length (ARL), median run length (MRL), and standard deviation of the run length (SDRL) metrics calculated through an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study. Results from the real data applications reveal the tool’s potential to be adopted to estimate the control limits in a Statistical Process Control (SPC) framework.

Abstract:
The influence of the merit pay guide chart on managerial, professional, technical, and clerical attitudes toward pay is examined in a large transit authority. Although findings indicate that both instrumentality and merit pay satisfaction are influenced by a merit pay guide chart (i.e. position in range and performance ratings) and the size merit increases, the relationship are not necessarily in the predicted direction. Regression analysis indicated that the impact of guide chart ratings on merit pay satisfaction is considerably more than on instrumentality belief. Employees who received merit increases larger than suggested by the guide chart are more satisfied with their merit pay increase than those who receive what is specified or less than what is specified. Implications for future research and compensation practices in the public sector are discussed.

Abstract:
Project governance is the management framework within which project decisions are made. Project governance is a critical element of any project since while the accountabilities and responsibilities associated with an organization’s business as usual activities are laid down in their organizational governance arrangements, seldom does an equivalent framework exist to govern the development of its capital investments (projects). For instance, the organization chart provides a good indication of who in the organization is responsible for any particular operational activity the organization conducts. But unless an organization has specifically developed a project governance policy, no such chart is likely to exist for project development activity. Therefore, the role of project governance is to provide a decision making framework that is logical, robust and repeatable to govern an organization’s capital investments. In this way, an organization will have a structured approach to conducting both its business as usual activities and its business change, or project, activities.

Abstract:
Case management has been a critical component of services to vulnerable populations for the past 20 years, and the knowledge base has been constantly evolving. This article offers an additional dimension to the study of case management practice by providing an opportunity for perceptions of case managers, heretofore relatively neglected, to be included in the literature. It reports the results of two study efforts (chart review and focus groups) that examined the case management system of care for people with HIV/AIDS in the New York tri-county region. While the literature and chart review findings stress the primacy of linkage activities, the case managers emphasize the importance of providing the support necessary to ensure that clients are able to maintain a reasonable quality of life. Findings are discussed in the context of the “strengths perspective” as well as service system and organizational contingencies. Potential methodological implications for the use of the study techniques are suggested.

Abstract:
Introduction: Nurse turnover is a problem linked to low job satisfaction and organizational commitment; therefore, appropriate nurse retention strategy from nursing managers and human resource is needed. This study aims to explain the effects of job satisfaction and organizational commitment on nurse retention. Methods: This systematic review uses registration protocol from The Joanna Briggs Institute Guideline as a guide in the quality assessment of the summarized studies. Studies using the PICOS Framework were sourced from the following databases: Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, EBSCOhost, JSTOR, SAGE, and ProQuest, published between 2010-2020, the study design was limited to cross-sectional, quasi-experiment, and randomized control trials. The feasibility study assessment used the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal; the search keywords were adjusted according to the Medical Subject Headings and Boolean operators. The selection results are displayed in the PRISMA flow chart. Results: The initial search of the entire database found 8059 articles, then several duplication screenings of titles 30 articles were extracted. A feasibility assessment was carried out so that the remaining 25 articles were divided into two themes, namely job satisfaction and organizational commitment, each of which can affect nurse retention. According to this study, organizational commitment has a broader dimension of job satisfaction. Conclusion: Job satisfaction and organizational commitment have an influence on nurse retention; both are of concern for nurse managers to create effective nurse retention strategy.

This was a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by interviews and documentation. Then the data were analyzed in three steps, 1) data reduction, 2) data presentation, 3) drawing conclusions / verification. The results of this research showed that the organizing management Arabic language course Al-Azhar Pare was still weak because of some obstacles such as the absence of clear organizational structure. Managers only gave the verbal division of duties to each member and did not create a chart of organizational structure for members so as to make the position between subordinates and bosses are invisible. Participants who had been granted certain rights were not given a clear number of members to assist in carrying out their duties. Thus, the organizing system is less organized.

Abstract:
Currently, special attention is given to the construction of sports facilities. In the context of the trend of development of high-performance sports and increasing the availability of mass amateur sports, a significant number of objects of appropriate functional purpose have been built recently: ski trails, stadiums, bicycle paths, reservoirs. A special place in this nomenclature is occupied by large-span stadiums with their complex and architecturally expressive forms. Modern sports facilities are built according to complex projects; engineers do their best to design the most convenient conditions for sports activities striving to make each facility meet its operational purpose, while being architecturally beautiful and unique. Sometimes, organizational and process design solutions are developed individually, because technical standard framework does not provide necessary data, in particular, the standard time duration of roofing process, which requires expert-based set of norms. The paper analyzes the experience of Russia and several foreign countries on trial organizational and process design of roofing process at sports facilities. As a result of the research, a flow chart has been drawn up for making a plan of the construction of a sports facility, taking into account the decomposition of works according to the degree of their typing in terms of standards of technical rate setting. These developments allow improving the methods of organizational and technological design, taking into account the introduction of algorithmic presentation schemes for the design process of organizational and technological solutions to optimize the development of options for the construction of large-span objects, including on the basis of experimental data and statistics on the construction of similar structural elements.
