Abstract:
Organizing has been adopted as a strategy for union renewal in the Netherlands, where the dominant repertoire has been consensus-based social dialogue. Certain Dutch unions have developed strategies inspired by the US ‘organizing model’ and have been relatively successful in recruiting and mobilizing under-represented workers. Despite some tensions emerging, the introduction of organizing resulted in the greater representation of workers in sectors such as cleaning, which has to an extent complemented social dialogue-based strategies. At the same time, the narrative and tactics of organizing have stimulated internal debate on union purpose and identity and indirectly contributed to a process of reform and democratization within parts of the union movement. The research demonstrates the pragmatic features of organizing as a strategy for union renewal in a context of regulated social partnership, but also points towards the potential for organizing to encourage shifts in the dominant sources of union legitimacy and power.

Abstract:
New models of union organizing have become an important instrument of union growth and renewal. We examine the transfer of US-developed organizing practices to Ireland. We enquire whether the practical experiences of SIPTU can be considered successful. In particular, we focus on the question: in what way is the architecture of union organizing shaped by the material conditions that affect workers’ power? We look at three campaigns across three low-wage sectors (hotels, red meat processing and contract cleaning). The campaigns share a number of common properties, but differ in respect of the power resources available to employees and the shape of their outcomes. Using a most similar systems comparative research design, we identify a variety of causes which help explain the success and shape of the different organizing campaigns. Finally, we make a number of arguments in respect of how our findings link to debates about the future of trade unionism.

Abstract:
In this explorative study, an overview of up to date data on plastic waste is given. Different methods of handling the plastic waste problem are described. The focus lies on volunteering. In order to get a picture of the plastic waste problem, a non-exhaustive overview is given of recent scientific and policy reports in paragraph 2. In paragraph 3 the guidelines of the UNEP and ISWA report on Global Waste Management is described. Other sources emphasize the importance of additional measurements. Those are e.g. self-organising volunteer activities in (higher-) education and volunteer cleaning up activities, respectively described in paragraph 4 and 5. In a small sample investigation to the motives for taken part in cleaning-up activities, undertaken in the Netherlands, Europe, two hypotheses were tested ‘cleaning-up is a token activity’ and ‘taking part in cleaning-up activities promotes environmental-friendly behaviour’.In paragraph 6 the method of the inquiry is described and in paragraph 7 we see from there some evidence for an expanding involvement with pro-environmental behaviour as a result from beach cleaning-up activities. In paragraph 8 we conclude that the need for involvement with the plastic waste problem of all and on all levels, is necessary. The contribution of volunteer activities like self-organizing groups in Universities or cleaning-up projects, seems to be an important factor in behavioural change to tackle the problem of plastic waste.

AbstractA useful tool for organizing jobs is the 5S methodology, which is essentially a program structured in five stages to obtain systematically: organization, cleanliness and standardization in the workplace, thus contributing to improving productivity, reducing quality nonconformities and job security problems, being a method that involves employees from all hierarchical levels using standards and discipline. Being a Japanese method for organizing, cleaning, developing and sustaining a productive job, the origin of the name comes from five Japanese words that start with the S sound, respectively: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, Shitsuke. This technique was also adopted by the organizations from the strong economies and, by translating the five words from Japanese into English, resulting in an identical name of this methodology: Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, Sustain.

Abstract:
This service aims to participate in the success of the efforts made by the management of the Al-Muttaqin prayer room in implementing health protocols according to government regulations regarding guidelines for organizing activities in houses of worship. It is also to educate the public or congregation about the meaning of Covid-19 and health protocols. This is because some people doubt that the Covid-19 virus can spread to farming communities. Because, for some of them, farmers only work in the fields. The methods used in the implementation of this service are: procurement of cleaning equipment, making liquid soap, spraying disinfectants, cleaning the prayer room, pasting posters, and distributing soap from house to house as well as an invitation to obey health protocols. The result achieved: the community or congregation became aware of the health protocol, which they then realized in the form of keeping the distance between congregations and bringing personal prayer mats from home. The prayer room management is also assisted by the procurement of cleaning equipment and additional personnel in the success of government regulations in the prayer room environment so that the implementation of health protocols is realized.

AbstractNickel titanium rotary shaping files fundamentally changed everything in endodontics; conceptually, procedurally and economically as well. NiTi rotary files made root canal therapy more accessible and kind of fun for dentists, and dental companies were loved for making files that cost four times more than stainless steel hand files but delivered a ten times improvement. The single file systems need no disinfecting, cleaning, sterilizing and organizing the NiTi files, provide optimal cutting efficiency along with better control of file breakage and thus increased patient safety and no risk for cross contamination.

Bourennani, Farid. "Integration of heterogeneous data types using self organizing maps." Thesis, UOIT, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10155/41.

Full text
Abstract:
With the growth of computer networks and the advancement of hardware technologies, unprecedented access to data volumes become accessible in a distributed fashion forming heterogeneous data sources. Understanding and combining these data into data warehouses, or merging remote public data into existing databases can significantly enrich the information provided by these data. This problem is called data integration: combining data residing at different sources, and providing the user with a unified view of these data. There are two issues with making use of remote data sources: (1) discovery of relevant data sources, and (2) performing the proper joins between the local data source and the relevant remote databases. Both can be solved if one can effectively identify semantically-related attributes between the local data sources and the available remote data sources. However, performing these tasks manually is time-consuming because of the large data sizes and the unavailability of schema documentation; therefore, an automated tool would be definitely more suitable. Automatically detecting similar entities based on the content is challenging due to three factors. First, because the amount of records is voluminous, it is difficult to perceive or discover information structures or relationships. Second, the schemas of the databases are unfamiliar; therefore, detecting relevant data is difficult. Third, the database entity types are heterogeneous and there is no existing solution for extracting a richer classification result from the processing of two different data types, or at least from textual and numerical data. We propose to utilize self-organizing maps (SOM) to aid the visual exploration of the large data volumes. The unsupervised classification property of SOM facilitates the integration of completely unfamiliar relational database tables and attributes based on the contents. In order to accommodate heterogeneous data types found in relational databases, we extended the term frequency – inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) measure to handle numerical and textual attribute types by unified vectorization processing. The resulting map allows the user to browse the heterogeneously typed database attributes and discover clusters of documents (attributes) having similar content. iii The discovered clusters can significantly aid in manual or automated constructions of data integrity constraints in data cleaning or schema mappings for data integration.

Abstract:
While the undesired effects of wildfire continue to increase in many regions, the fire science community continues to suffer from an important shortage of observational data of fire behaviour, especially at the landscape scale. Observations of landscape-scale fire spread acquired during firefighting operations have traditionally been incomplete, infrequent or qualitative. Airborne remote sensing technologies are changing this paradigm with the increasing adoption of infrared and multispectral optical sensors by fire management agencies. However, fire observations acquired during fire management operations are designed with the goal of supporting real-time decisions and they may not completely meet the needs of a rigorous scientific analysis. In this paper, we analyse and discuss this question through the specific case of the 2020 fire season in California. 2020 was one of the worst years on record in the Western United States in terms of burned area, social impact and economic losses caused by fire. During this season, fire management agencies deployed airborne imaging sensors during the largest and most impactful fires. In addition to using the imagery in real time, data was stored for posterior analysis by academia. The goal of this paper is to present an analysis of such information. Preliminary inspection of the data suggests that the acquired imagery will be useful to study fire progression with a varying temporal resolution between a few minutes and 24 hours. We have identified the fires that will be analysed and we are currently organizing, categorizing and cleaning the datasets. For the revised version of this paper, we also plan to integrate fire behaviour observations with vegetation, topography and weather information retrieved from public repositories. We expect that the results of this analysis will be useful to (i) better understand the response of fire behaviour to topographic features as well as changing weather and vegetation conditions, (ii) validate fire spread simulators at the landscape scale, and (iii) investigate the relationships between weather conditions, fire dynamics and fire ecological effects.

Abstract:
The chapter deals with the role of potatoes bred at the Imperial Biological Institute (Biologische Reichsanstalt - BRA) in the Nazi Battle of Production. It highlights the importance of research at the BRA for the seed cleansing of the Nazi years, with thousands of varieties eliminated from German fields, enforced by the Imperial Food Estate (Reichsnährstand - RNS), the institutional form of the ideology of Blood and Soil and the mammoth Nazi organization responsible for organizing the peasant world. The research dynamics at the BRA aimed at coping with the multiple pests afflicting German potato fields (wart, Colorado beetle, late blight, viruses) is put in relation with the growing infrastructure of the RNS, in an exemplary case of co-production of science and the state: each new experimental system at the BRA corresponded to an expansion of the power and reach of the RNS

Abstract:
The content of the article is connected with the motive of aquatic element and water substance in the epic novel, which performs world-organizing, psychological, socio-ethical, plot-forming functions. The ambivalent image of waters is rooted in world and Russian cultural traditions, in folklore and mythology. In the epic novel, the historical process, the movement of human masses is likened to flow. Rivers / lakes that need to cross, protrude between life and death, salvation and death. Moving on water symbolizes movement in time, spiritual changes. One hypostage of water is an update, cleansing, the other is associated with the dark, destructive start, with death. Rivers are connected with a space-time organization of the text: a cracker and war become participants in the fateful collision of the Russian and Napoleonic armies. In “War and Peace” rivers are also a symbol of utopian democratic ashes. The motive of aquatic element and water substance is a representation of the universal concept “Water”, which, together with other mental units, reflects the artist’s life philosophy, the originality of his thinking, the national picture of the world.

We present the design and implementation of an inquiry-based activity based on a general proposal of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic called “study and research path for teacher education” (SRP-TE) as a tool to reflect, develop, analyze, and experience proposals for teaching statistics at lower secondary school. Our proposal of SRP-TE starts from a textbook activity based on a statistical graph about water distribution in Brazil and turns it into an open activity that fosters different dimensions of statistical work (searching, collecting, cleaning, organizing, and exploring data), including interdisciplinary interaction. After its implementation, when asked about the content inherent in the inquiry, pre-service teachers seem to disregard many dimensions of the statistical work, especially those related to data handling.
