Abstract:
ABSTRACT A questionnaire was circulated between ARPEL (Asistencia Recíproca Petrolera Empresarial Latinoamericana) member companies in which their capacity to confront an oil spill contingency on their shores, separately and collectively, is determined. The results show that a need exists for preparing sensitivity maps to be utilized in the contingency plans. It can be concluded from this study that the Latin American petroleum industry centered in ARPEL should orient itself toward regional cooperation that would strengthen institutional capacity and maximize the effectiveness of government-industry collaboration in handling emergency situations.

Abstract:
This article deals with the autobiography Livsdrömmen rena (1982; The Clear Dream of Life), written by the Finland-Swedish author Christer Kihlman. It is his second so-called South America book and is based on the writer’s own experiences from the early 1980s, when he visited several South American countries. The text is seen in a theoretical-methodological frame of postcolonial studies, i.e. the 1978 book Orientalism by Edward W. Said, which describes, how “the Orient”, Oriental people and nations were viewed by their western colonizers. The analysis, which also takes into account Latin American postcolonial specificities, follows the article author’s already performed interpretation of Kihlman’s first South America book, Alla mina söner (1980; translated as All My Sons, 1984).

Impact of the current competition regime on science and scientific publishing in Latin America and its implications for development." Abstract:
The current competition regime that characterizes international science is often presented as a quest for excellence. It diversely affects research in Latin America and research in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. This article asks how this competition regime may orient the direction of research in Latin America, and to whose advantage. It is argued that, by relating excellence to quality differently, a research policy that seeks to improve the level of science in Latin America while preserving the possibility of solving problems relevant to the region can be designed. Competition, it is also argued, certainly has its place in science, but not as a general management tool, especially if the goal is to improve overall quality of science in Latin America. Scientific competition is largely managed through journals and their reputation. Therefore, designing a science policy for Latin America (and for any ‘peripheral’ region of the world) requires paying special attention to the mechanisms underpinning the production, circulation and consumption of scientific journals. So-called ‘international’ or ‘core’ journals are of particular interest as local, national, or even regional journals must struggle to find their place in this peculiar publishing eco-system.

Abstract A Hebrew manuscript in the Parma Palatinate Library, produced in the fourteenth century, probably in Provence, contains adaptations from Latin/Romance texts, including two that originate in the Christian crusading tradition. These two sections consist mainly of historical and geographical data relating to the Levant. The Hebrew adaptations, although selective, are religiously neutral, reflecting the redactor’s keen interest in the history and geography of the Orient and his willingness to absorb information about it from Christian sources.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis article argues that social democratic and orthodox Marxist conceptualizations of politics are unable to “engage in solidarity” with many new forms of Latin American popular politics. Such movements challenge the politics of representation, the market economy, and the state form by reinventing territorialized experiments in self-government, which politicize place, subjectivities, and social relations. Developing a critique of these frameworks of political analysis, this article argues that conceptual categories combining the insights of autonomist or open Marxism and poststructuralism and the critical reflections and theorizations by Latin America's newest social movements enable a deeper engagement with such movements. This critique challenges academics committed to progressive social change to reexamine long-held notions about the nature and agents of social transformation and the epistemological categories that orient our research. It argues that if we fail to do this, then we risk becoming gatekeepers of the status quo.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines the issue of how Armenians and Nestorians in the Mongol service used the Western legends about the Orient to influence the crusading plans of the Latin Christians between 1248 and 1307. In particular, it considers the role of the ruling elite of Cilician Armenia as mediators between Mongols and Franks in Outremer, first discussing the Letter of Cilician Constable Smbat (1248), and then examining the treatise “Flos historiarum terre orientis” by Hayton of Corycus (Het’um/Haitonus, 1307) with the crusading proposal contained in it. This article examines the narrative techniques used by Smbat and Het’um to produce a positive image of the Mongols/Tatars for Western readers in a wider cultural context of contemporary European perception of the Orient. In particular, it researches how Smbat incorporated the stories about the Magi and Prester John into the description of the Mongol Empire and the spread of Christianity within it. Special attention is given to a comparison of Armenian sources written for internal (Armenian) and external (Frankish) readers. This article also develops a hypothesis that Armenian diplomacy used Louis IX of France’s letter and his envoy William of Rubruck to enforce the position of the Cilician king Het’um I at the Mongol court in 1254.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Arabic star names are well known in two areas: in the Orient itself, i.e. in the Arabic-Islamic civilization, and in the West where many of them were adopted since mediaeval times and continued to be used until today. The complex known in modern Western astronomy as “Arabic star names” is the result of a historical development of almost exactly one thousand years. In mediaeval times, those names were introduced into Western use by Latin translations of Arabic astronomical and astrological works. Afterwards, since Humanist and Renaissance times, and until this present century, Western astronomers used to pick up more “Arabic” names from philological studies of orientalists who tried to describe and explain the stellar nomenclature of the Arabs and other Oriental peoples. As outstanding examples, I mention the studies of Joseph Scaliger and his follower Hugo Grotius (both printed in 1600) whose nomenclature was borrowed by Johannes Bayer into his star atlas Uranometria of 1603; Thomas Hyde’s commentary to his edition of Ulugh Bēg’s star catalogue (Oxford, 1665) from which Giuseppe Piazzi borrowed a great number of names into the second edition of his Palermo Catalogue, 1814; German studies by F.W.V. Lach (1796) and Ludwig Ideler (1809) which were used by continental astronomers such as J.E.Bode and many others; and still the book on star names by R.H. Allen (1899) from which several new names appear in astronomical books and atlases of our times.

A Mosaic tour of the Univ. of Delaware Botanic Gardens is available on Internet using the Mosaic server and provides fact sheets about herbaceous and woody plants. Each sheet is a mosaic page with in-lined images that include hyper-links to a sound file of the pronunciation of the Latin plant name and images of the plant, including buds, flowers, fruits, leaves, and other characteristics. A map of the garden identifying the plant's location is provided on each page to orient visitors and students. There are currently over 1500 images in development. The tour uses map images and key words to help students identify and select plants. Composite views illustrating the same characteristic from several plants provide a visual method to aid students in identification of unknown specimens. Database searches provide a method to search for plant information in the tour, and in the future will provide lists of plants with specific characteristics. 2018. The articulus according to Latin grammarians up to the early Middle Ages: The complex interplay of tradition and innovation in grammatical doctrine.

Abstract:
AbstractSeveral investigations on environment social representations have been made as of years 90, in diverse countries of Latin America. This article highlights the approaches of the studies made in the scope of the formal education in Spain, Brazil, and Mexico, with emphasis onthe subjects towards those who were directed. One was that the typologies of naturalistic, anthropocentric and globalisingrepresentationshave become a key reference in investigations of environmental education that use this theory. Similarly, which most of the studies are centred in a single type of subjects, either they are teachers or the students, but not towards both interacting at the time of the investigation. The field of the social representations in the environmental education is in an initial, explorative state,it requires of more studies with different and complementary subjects, as well as of which their results are applied to orient the processes, the educationalpractices and proposals towards the formation of habits and pro-environmental values.

Abstract:
---The Internationalization of democracy: the universalization of liberal valuesCapitalism and liberal democracy, both based on the principles of individual freedom, have relied on each other in their spreading across the globe. This model has been disseminated without further questioning in the West, particularly in Latin America. On the other hand, the symbiotic combination of democracy and capitalism in the East is imposed through a domination process, since it is a model of society different from the original western societies. So, thinking of democracy in terms of what is presented to us today means to understand that it is, in its origin and essence, inseparable from one specific economic model. This article discusses the concept of democracy, considering its social meaning, and the characteristics of the Latin American countries. Keywords: democracy, capitalism, Latin America

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to analyze the effects of accruals-based earnings management (AEM), International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) adoption and stock market integration for firms that belong to Latin-American Integrated Market (MILA).Design/methodology/approachThe GMM estimator was used according to Arellano and Bover (1995) for panel data on a sample of 478 non-financial companies between 2000 and 2016. Multilevel mixed models was used for the robustness analysis.FindingsAEM practices significantly and dynamically reduce agency costs. This result suggests companies use positive discretionary accruals to hide true agency costs and avoid shareholders monitoring, while negative discretionary accruals are ways to expropriate wealth and increase agency costs. This result implies that firms use AEM as a predetermined strategy to weaken corporate governance. The IFRS adoption and MILA implementation reduced agency costs. However, only IFRS adoption had the capability to mitigate the effects of AEM on agency costs.Originality/valueThese results reveal AEM constitutes a practice that managers use to weaken firms’ corporate governance and expropriate wealth from shareholders. These practices have effects at short-run and long-run. However, the IFRS adoption and market integration represented by MILA are mitigating factors for agency costs. These results have relevant implications for firms’ corporate governance because they guide investors and shareholders to strengthen corporate control and monitoring on business decision-making. These results also are relevant to policymakers because they orient the financial policies design to strengthen the benefits of IFRS and MILA.

Abstract:
The article deals with the evolution of Poland’s foreign policy towards its closest eastern neighbours: independent Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus. It’s commonly referred to in the Polish historical science as the “Eastern Policy” and the countries themselves as the “Eastern outskirts” as opposed to the classical western understanding of “the East”, for which the Latin word “Orient” is used. Throughout Poland’s history this region was of a prominent role, at times being a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and at other times some kind of a “no-man’s land”, while taking its current shape only after the USSR and the Eastern block collapse.Though Russia is often considered to be a part of Poland’s “Eastern Policy”, the difference is clear in the nature of relationship between Warsaw and Moscow and that of the “ULB” (Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus). In addition, Poland’s area of responsibility as an EU member included Ukraine and Belarus rather than Russia, which predominantly remained a priority of the “old” EU member states. Therefore the Russian-Polish relations figure here as a background, while the focus is on the “ULB” states. Increasing integration of the Polish “Eastern Policy” into the EU’s framework necessitated touching upon Moldova as well as Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, which were invited along with Ukraine and Belarus to participate in a major European initiative– the “Eastern Partnership”. For the same reason two phases were outlined: before and after Poland’s accession to the EU which formally took place on 1st of May, 2004.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Resident involvement in voluntary organizations within neighborhoods is often predicted by social factors, awareness of neighborhood problems, and past involvement in activism. Less is known about what predicts involvement in gentrifying neighborhoods with a concentration of generational Latino/Latina families. The mixed methods surveys of residents ( n = 195) and in-depth interviews of neighborhood association participants and leaders in the Menlo Park neighborhood of Tucson, Arizona ( n = 17), determined that residents were involved in the neighborhood association this year when they were also involved in other voluntary organizations in the last year and activism since moving into the neighborhood. Latino/Latina households were more involved in faith/religious and school-focused organizations. Caucasian households were more involved in the neighborhood farmer’s market, business or civic groups, arts, and other social change efforts. Therefore, planners and organizers may need to reach out to varying demographics via different organizations where they belong and participate.

Abstract: The translation of Latin works to vernacular languages created the possibility to expand the readership and change in the forms of assimilation of these writings. Abstract:

Abstract: This study presents a series of concerns of the Catholic Church about the environmental issue extracted from various documents from the Vatican II until the 5th Latin American Conference of Aparecida. The issue becomes quite sharply defined in the pronouncements of Popes Paul VI and John Paul II. It is also clearly present in the theme of the various Fraternity Campaigns promoted by the Brazilian Bishops. The stated opinions about the environment at the Latin American Episcopal Conferences of Medellin, Puebla, Santo Domingo and Aparecida are also remarkable. The study shows that the Church, being concerned with guiding the faithful and society in the struggle for the preservation of all forms of life, has followed the problems of the ecology with great care. It also takes a stand in the face of environmental problems by resorting to the Sacred Scripture, to Theology and to the Magisterium.
