Full textThis Master’s thesis presents the design, control and experimental validation of a haptic compass, designed as a guiding device for the visually impaired in all environments. The literature review shows that there is a need for haptic guidance and how this technology differs from current haptic devices. The proposed device uses the principle of asymmetric torques. Its design is based on a direct drive motor and a pre-calibrated open-loop control, which allows the generation of stimuli in a wide range of frequencies. The device is calibrated and its mechanical properties are evaluated to ensure that the open-loop control provides sufficient precision. A first user study presents interesting effectiveness in the frequency range 5 to 15 Hz and for torques over 40 mNm. In a second experiment, the use of a haptic feedback proportional to the anglular error is shown to significantly improve the results. An experimental validation by a group of subjects walking with the aid of the portable device in an open environment is then reported. The results show that all participants met all route objectives with small lateral deviations (0:39 m on average). The performances obtained and the user’s impressions are favorable and confirm the potential of this device. Finally, a model of the human orientation task is developed and demonstrates the importance of individual customization. A receding horizon strategy for the placement of the current target on the path is thereby proposed.

Full textContrary to a widespread opinion, contexts of economic deprivation do not fuel political violence in general. However, violence committed in the name of right-wing ideologies increases in times of deprivation, while violence in the name of left-wing ideologies rises in times of prosperity. This dissertation aims to document and explain this differential effect of economic deprivation. The first part describes the link between economy and political violence of the right and the left in two historical case studies: France (1882-1980) and the United States (1948-2016). Based on cross-national surveys, psychological experiments and data on terrorist attacks in democratic countries since the 1970s, the second part shows that economic decline favors the mobilization of reactionary ideologies that contribute to right-wing political violence. Based on an economic experiment and data on terrorist attacks, the third part shows that economic inequalities reduce the capabilities of economically dominated groups to attack dominant groups, which consequently limits left-wing political violence. Finally, the last part of the thesis explores some limits of therelationship between economy and political violence: in the case of violence with apolitical motives (e.g. suicide terrorists with suicidal motives) and in the case of violence entering a transnational strategy (e.g. contemporary jihadism)

Full textThis thesis aims at highlighting how the interplay between robotics and the sciences of the living can promote both the understanding the cerebral circuitry and the achievment of very robust algorithms for robotics. The problem of the development of a neural achitecture, inspired by neurobiological models of the cerebral circuitry, for autonomous navigation of mobile robots in unknown indoor and outdoor environments, is adressed. A localization system based on a model of purely visual place-cells is presented. The place-cells enable to learn reactive sensory-motor behavior and planning behavior. The system is able to learn behavioral tasks autonomously or by interacting with a human teacher. An orientation system, merging a visual compass and path integration information, will also be proposed. The possible interactions between sensory-motor and planning strategies will be debated. Finally, issues on the autonomy of the learning in robot will be adressed: A metacontrol architecture which gives self-evaluation capabilities by analyzing the learning progress will be presented

Full textIn this dissertation, the author draws on Hannah Arendt’s theory of judgment in exploring what it means to judge “as a member of a community”. At odds with a certain picture of community, Arendt’s reflexions on judgment pointed not only to the problem of forming a community among people who have lost what they had in common but also to the possibility of considering the notion of community as both an aspectual concept and a perspectivist political practice. Thus, this dissertation brings to light a perspicuous representation of the notion of community. In other words, it seeks to help us experience new and different aspects of the concept of community. To access those aspects of community, we need access to ways of thinking about and using community that allow for meaningful engagement and critical reflection. In a first part, the author seeks insight about community from four thinkers from different theoretical backgrounds. In a second part, the author tries to show that alternative pictures of the concept of community exist. The criterion used to select these alternative examples is their usefulness in illuminating some aspect of community, thereby contributing to a perspicuous representation of the concept. The examples, which are all borrowed from the legal sphere, focus mainly on moments when the picture of community and the idea of something in common become puzzling. Krisis situations, borderline cases (Grenzsituation) between law and politics, between community and extraneity, they are all examples of the possibility of bringing together division and communality
