Full text
Abstract:
This Master’s thesis presents the design, control and experimental validation of a haptic compass, designed as a guiding device for the visually impaired in all environments. The literature review shows that there is a need for haptic guidance and how this technology differs from current haptic devices. The proposed device uses the principle of asymmetric torques. Its design is based on a direct drive motor and a pre-calibrated open-loop control, which allows the generation of stimuli in a wide range of frequencies. The device is calibrated and its mechanical properties are evaluated to ensure that the open-loop control provides sufficient precision. A first user study presents interesting effectiveness in the frequency range 5 to 15 Hz and for torques over 40 mNm. In a second experiment, the use of a haptic feedback proportional to the anglular error is shown to significantly improve the results. An experimental validation by a group of subjects walking with the aid of the portable device in an open environment is then reported. The results show that all participants met all route objectives with small lateral deviations (0:39 m on average). The performances obtained and the user’s impressions are favorable and confirm the potential of this device. Finally, a model of the human orientation task is developed and demonstrates the importance of individual customization. A receding horizon strategy for the placement of the current target on the path is thereby proposed.

Varaine, Simon.

Full text
Abstract:
Contrary to a widespread opinion, contexts of economic deprivation do not fuel political violence in general. However, violence committed in the name of right-wing ideologies increases in times of deprivation, while violence in the name of left-wing ideologies rises in times of prosperity. This dissertation aims to document and explain this differential effect of economic deprivation. The first part describes the link between economy and political violence of the right and the left in two historical case studies: France (1882-1980) and the United States (1948-2016). Based on cross-national surveys, psychological experiments and data on terrorist attacks in democratic countries since the 1970s, the second part shows that economic decline favors the mobilization of reactionary ideologies that contribute to right-wing political violence. Based on an economic experiment and data on terrorist attacks, the third part shows that economic inequalities reduce the capabilities of economically dominated groups to attack dominant groups, which consequently limits left-wing political violence. Finally, the last part of the thesis explores some limits of therelationship between economy and political violence: in the case of violence with apolitical motives (e.g. suicide terrorists with suicidal motives) and in the case of violence entering a transnational strategy (e.g. contemporary jihadism)

Abstract:
This thesis aims at highlighting how the interplay between robotics and the sciences of the living can promote both the understanding the cerebral circuitry and the achievment of very robust algorithms for robotics. The problem of the development of a neural achitecture, inspired by neurobiological models of the cerebral circuitry, for autonomous navigation of mobile robots in unknown indoor and outdoor environments, is adressed. A localization system based on a model of purely visual place-cells is presented. The place-cells enable to learn reactive sensory-motor behavior and planning behavior. The system is able to learn behavioral tasks autonomously or by interacting with a human teacher. An orientation system, merging a visual compass and path integration information, will also be proposed. The possible interactions between sensory-motor and planning strategies will be debated. Finally, issues on the autonomy of the learning in robot will be adressed: A metacontrol architecture which gives self-evaluation capabilities by analyzing the learning progress will be presented

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, the author draws on Hannah Arendt’s theory of judgment in exploring what it means to judge “as a member of a community”. At odds with a certain picture of community, Arendt’s reflexions on judgment pointed not only to the problem of forming a community among people who have lost what they had in common but also to the possibility of considering the notion of community as both an aspectual concept and a perspectivist political practice. Thus, this dissertation brings to light a perspicuous representation of the notion of community. In other words, it seeks to help us experience new and different aspects of the concept of community. To access those aspects of community, we need access to ways of thinking about and using community that allow for meaningful engagement and critical reflection. In a first part, the author seeks insight about community from four thinkers from different theoretical backgrounds. In a second part, the author tries to show that alternative pictures of the concept of community exist. The criterion used to select these alternative examples is their usefulness in illuminating some aspect of community, thereby contributing to a perspicuous representation of the concept. The examples, which are all borrowed from the legal sphere, focus mainly on moments when the picture of community and the idea of something in common become puzzling. Krisis situations, borderline cases (Grenzsituation) between law and politics, between community and extraneity, they are all examples of the possibility of bringing together division and communality

Zhou, Yangping. "Market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation in a learning organization." Diss., Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 2014. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:19-174537.

Full text
Abstract:
In this globe of brutal competition, market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation as two types of market-based learning constitute positional advantage to an organization, because this corporate cultural competitiveness is unique, rare, valuable, and inimitable. This dissertation focuses on the change management of market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation in a business unit with approximately 150 employees of a multinational company. It is structured in an evolving way with an overarching theoretical foundation from organizational culture and learning in organization connecting three studies. The first study investigates “what” are the factors (market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation) and how they lead to subjective business performance. The finding of the study reveals that in this business unit, market-oriented and entrepreneurial-oriented values significantly contribute to their respective behaviors. However, only the behavioral construct of interfunctional coordination from market orientation and behavioral construct of innovativeness from entrepreneurial orientation predict the significant impacts on the subjective business performance. Nevertheless, when taking all behavioral dimensions into account at the same time, subjective business performance is perceived to a very high degree. The second study presents “how” market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation can be changed at individual, group and organizational levels through implementing change interventions in the business unit. Quantitative results by comparing pre- and posttests exhibit no significant changes in organization-wide perception of market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation. However, significant differences have been observed among some groups in both tests. The final study aims to investigate change readiness of the business unit comprising of cognitive and affective components through interviews. Qualitative results from a multilevel approach show that the change readiness at individual level is higher than group level´s, and group level´s is higher than organizational level´s. It gives evidence that change initiatives start to bring out behavioral results and actions as well. Therefore, this dissertation offers comprehensive understanding on how an organization conceives, implements and initiates further activities over a period of time.

Abstract:
Background. Virtual reality (VR) technology has evolved to a stage where affordable consumer devices are available. Still, there are limitations to technology which causes compromises to be made. One of the big problems in VR is locomotion, especially regarding immersion and comfort. There are two common ways for locomotion in VR, Teleportation and smooth continuous locomotion. Smooth locomotion is often considered superior for immersion but commonly causes simulation sickness.Objectives. This paper is comparing two different methods of smooth locomotion, one based on head orientation and the other based on controller orientation. The objective is to determine which method is preferred regarding comfort, immersion and ease of use.Methods. To identify the strength and weaknesses of each method, a VR experiment was designed which simulates tasks common in video games. A comparative study was made with fifteen subjects. The fifteen participants performed tasks involving exploring a VR environment and using the VR controller to shoot at targets. After using each of the methods the subjects then answered questionnaires about the usability and the simulations sickness caused by the method. Other data was collected on how well the task was performed such as number of targets hit.Results. The users ranked controller orientation locomotion higher for perceived naturalness and likeability and was ranked lower for items relating to restrictiveness and difficulty. No significant difference was found regarding simulator sickness and performance.Conclusion. Controller orientation locomotion ranked at least as good or better than head orientation locomotion in all categories. This shows that it is the preferred orientation method in this use case where the application is similar to a first person shooter game.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to generalize the findings about market orientation, learning orientation, innovation and performance to the textile and apparel context in South Korea, specifically to SMEs, and, in addition, to investigate the role of informal relationships in SMEs within the presence of these other variables. This study postulates that market orientation, learning orientation, and innovation are related to performance. This study conducted a survey in South Korea, using a paper-and-pencil questionnaire, to determine the relationship of various management related variables with the SMEs' performance. Of the 200 questionnaires that were distributed, 183 were returned and178 were completed and usable for the research. Results of this study showed that components of market orientation and learning orientation were both significantly related to innovation and some components along with innovation were significantly related to South Korean apparel SMEs' performance. The proposed relationship of these factors to performance could be generalized to SMEs in the apparel industry, within the context of South Korea.

Building on a detailed philosophical basis, this thesisoffers visitor orientation as an alternative perspective onhuman-computer interaction with a focus on visitors and places. In our modern world we see that computers are no longerexclusively used as tools, but they also allow for theexperience of being visitors in a large variety of places. Someexamples of such places are online chat sites, web sites, online communities and 3D games. The work builds onVisitor Orientation in Human- Computer Interaction[Hedman‘01]where the visitor oriented perspective wasfirst established and a series of studies were performed in 3Ddigital environments. Here the main task is to further refinevisitor orientation against the background of an extendedexamination of the history of philosophy and an ethnographicstudy of a mixed reality museum exhibition,Re-tracing the Past, which was conducted as part of theSHAPE project funded by the European Community. Against thisbackground, a design philosophy is developed that suggestssensitivities for visitor oriented design in human-computerinteraction. The thesis also provides many discussions oftopics related to human-computer interaction in relation topositions discussed in the history of philosophy, in particularwith respect to questions of place. It serves as a guide foranyone interested in understanding visitors and places withinhuman-computer interaction in a philosophically informedway.

Abstract:
Communication Apprehension (CA) pertains to levels of fear or anxiety people experience in relation to real or anticipated communication with other people. Decades of research on CA has focused on college students. This research explored levels of oral CA in an organizational environment. The purpose of this research was threefold. First, this study examined the communication apprehension profiles of native-language (English) and second-language (non-English) employees in a midsized South Florida service organization to understand if the levels of communication anxiety differ between the two groups as well as if demographic variables played a part in managing levels of communication anxiety. Second, this study examined the difference of perception credibility in supervisors between same-language and opposite-language employees to examine and analyze the relationship between the two groups and their supervisors in order to identify if communication problems exist that could affect an amicable working relationship or constructive feedback. Third, this study compared organizational personality types of upward mobile and indifferent to levels of communication apprehension in native-language (English) and second-language (non-English) employees in a sample of culturally diverse office personnel in two separate corporate locations in a midsized management organization located in South Florida. The findings were found not to be statistically significant; however, it was learned that CA levels do exist and that anxiety levels vary between respondents. Further investigation into the effects of CA on workplace production remains a challenge. Additional studies using randomly selected populations from similarly diverse organizations more representative of the diversity of the region rather than a convenience sample is recommended.

Abstract:
One of the major factors toward the persistence of college freshman with their education as discussed by Vincent Tonto is Social and Academic integration into the life of a university. Social integration is how well the student feels connected to other members of the university community. There has been a significant body of research done on the use of social networks to encourage social integration in a university setting. This project proposes the creation of a synchronous virtual community / social network to not only encourage social integration but also physical integration through use of the network.

Abstract:
The Parma project deals with process (re)engineering of public administration. In the first phase the project focused on mapping the processes of a local authority. Then the key processes were set and the project moved to the reengineering phase. This thesis shows that the matter is much more complicated and goes beyond public administration as such. The process perspective allows to create many different processes coping with the same issue. The thesis, with the help of Prof. Boullier's work ("La Boussole écodémocrate"), offers a "philosophical" framework of public sector. This contribution is the foundation for future Parma project development. The thesis contains some propositions designed for the Parma project management improvement. It also presents the methodology used in the Parma project (MMABP -- Methodology for Modelling and Analysis of Business Processes), and gives some propositions for its improvement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Two studies were conducted to present two new theoretical constructs based on narcissistic personality and Daoist water-like personality research. Narcissistic group orientation (NGO) was developed to incorporate both the grandiose and vulnerable expressions of narcissism into a group-oriented social variable. NGO is pathological group orientation with two distinct expressions that share a common etiology in social identity monopolization. The conditions that promote social identity monopolization and ultimately increase the salience of the particular self-category, differ amongst the grandiose and vulnerable expressions of NGO. The grandiose expression increases salience of a particular self-category to facilitate opportunistic use for self-enhancement, while the vulnerable expression increases salience of a particular self-category to facilitate threat detection and avoidance. Water-like group orientation (WGO) was developed to provide a measure of secure in-group positivity which is in contrast to defensive in-group positivity. WGO is a prosocial group orientation that is based on the Daoist principle of wuwei (non-action) or underacting which is conceived here as a lack of desire for control. Study 1 aimed to provide support for the factor structure of the newly developed scales and provide evidence of validity. The results of confirmatory factor analyses in Study 1 and Study 2 supported a two-factor NGO model and a two-factor WGO model. The two-factor NGO model is made up of a grandiose narcissistic group orientation (GNGO) factor and a vulnerable narcissistic group orientation (VNGO) factor. WGO Factor 1 (WGOF1) is an in-group confidence and satisfaction factor, and WGO Factor 2 (WGOF2) is an out-group respect and altruism factor. Study 1 also gathered evidence of convergent validity for both the NGO and WGO constructs. Both GNGO and VNGO exhibited positive correlations with social dominance orientation and blind patriotism, and negligible correlations with constructive patriotism. WGOF1 exhibited positive correlations with social dominance orientation and blind patriotism, and a negligible correlation with constructive patriotism. WGOF2 exhibited negative correlations with social dominance orientation and blind patriotism, and a positive correlation with constructive patriotism. Study 2 sought to gather support for the factor structure of NGO and WGO once again and to examine the relationship between GNGO, VNGO, WGOF1, and WGOF2 with a multicomponent measure of in-group identification that includes solidarity, satisfaction, centrality, self-stereotyping, and in-group homogeneity. GNGO, VNGO, and WGOF1 were positively related to all five in-group identification components, while WGOF2 was unrelated to all five in-group identification components. The NGO and WGO scales may be used to study groups who are experiencing acute or ongoing intergroup conflict, intense scrutiny, or aggressive groups. These scales may be used to develop a greater understanding of group and environmental characteristics that lead to defensive in-group positivity.

Abstract:
The Market orientation (MO) phenomena have been meticulously studied in the marketing literature for more than three decades. While in the beginning MO had been investigated from a focal form perspective, it has evolved to account for the role it plays in distribution channels or supply chains. However, the perspective taken has consistently been from a focal firm perspective, either about its own or its partners market orientation. This study seeks to extend the theory on market orientation to account for the role that it plays within business relationships (i.e. inter-firm market orientation). IMO was initially conceptualized as the joint activities between the focal firm and its channel partner in joint intelligence generation, joint intelligence dissemination and joint customer responsiveness. This study develops the theory that a business relationship can be either market oriented or not and attempts to explain the effect of this inter-firm market orientation on relationship performance as well as focal firm performance. Specifically, this study asks the question, does inter-firm market orientation mediate the focal firm market orientation – performance relationship? This study was investigated using a two-stage approach. In the first stage, a measurement scale was developed and empirically tested to measure inter-firm market orientation. It was from the scale development efforts that the conceptualization of IMO was refined to include the joint intelligence cooperation and joint customer responsiveness efforts between the focal firm and its channel partners. It appears that the focal firm and their channel partner do not differentiate or separate the activities of intelligence generation and intelligence dissemination. They view it more as a cooperative effort. Additionally, the focus of the intelligence cooperation efforts appears to be more about intelligence collected through market research about end-user customers rather than by speaking with customers directly. Finally, the customer responsiveness efforts appear to be reactively focused rather than both reactively and proactively. The scale development was followed by the second stage where the revised IMO construct was included in a model in which it mediated the often-studied market orientation – performance relationship. A number of hypotheses were developed using various relationship theories such as transaction cost economics, resource-based view, and interaction approach. The model was tested with a sample of 130 informants using a variance-based structural equation modeling technique called partial least squares. The final analysis indicated that all paths were significant and that the IMO and relationship performance constructs partially mediated the MO – performance relationship. These findings suggest that it is important to understand both intra and inter-firm market orientation activities to truly understand their impact on business performance.

Abstract:
Automatic feature extraction still remains a relevant image and signal processing problem even tough both the field and technologies are developing rapidly. Images of low quality, where it is extremely difficult to reliably process image information automatically, are of special interest. To such images we can refer forensic fingerprints, which are left unintentionally on different surfaces andare contaminated by several of the most difficult noise types. For this reason, identification of fingerprints is mainly based on the visual skills of forensic examiners. We address the problem caused by low quality in fingerprints by connecting different sources of information together, yielding dense frequency and orientation maps in an iterative scheme. This scheme comprises smoothing ofthe original, but only along, ideally never across, the ridges. Reliable estimation of dense maps allows to introduce a continuous fingerprint ridge counting technique. In fingerprint scenario the collection of irrefutable tiny details, e.g. bifurcation of ridges, called minutiae, is used to tie the pattern of such points and their tangential directions to the finger producing the pattern. This limited feature set, location and direction of minutiae, is used in current AFIS systems, while fingerprint examiners use the extended set of features, including the image information between the points. With reasonably accurate estimationsof dense frequency and orientation maps at hand, we have been able to propose a novel compact feature descriptor of arbitrary points. We have used these descriptors to show that the image information between minutiae can be extracted automatically and be valuable for identity establishment of forensic images even if the underlying images are noisy. We collect and compress the image information in the neighborhoods of the fine details, such as minutiae, to vectors, one per minutia, and use the vectors to "color" the minutiae. When matching two patterns (of minutiae) even the color of the minutia must match to conclude that they come from the same identity. This feature development has been concentrated and tested on forensic fingerprint images. However, we have also studied an extension of its application area to other biometrics, periocular regions of faces. This allowed us to test the persistence of automatically extracted features across different types of imagesand image qualities, supporting its generalizability.

Abstract:

The energies of protein correlated motions lie in the far infrared or THz frequency range (λ = 1 cm – 50 mm, f = 0.03 – 6 THz). The existence of correlated motions has been confirmed by neutron and inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. These techniques require large sample volumes and specialized facilities, limiting their application to systematic studies of changes in correlated motions with functional state and allosteric interactions. Standard terahertz time domain spectroscopy measurements have shown sensitivity to protein-ligand binding, oxidation state, conformation, temperature and hydration. However, the response is broad, in part from the large vibrational density of states and in part from the dielectric response contribution from surface water and side-chains.

As an overall strategy to measure the correlated structural motions in protein, we use anisotropic and birefringent behavior of molecular crystals to develop a new technique called MOSTS (Modulated Orientation Sensitive Terahertz Spectroscopy). We achieve high sensitivity and mode separation, by using single molecular crystal such as sucrose and oxalic acid, and rapid modulation of the relative alignment of the terahertz polarization and the crystal axes by rotating the sample. By locking into the signal at the rotation frequency, we determine the polarization sensitive signal and map out the optically active vibrational resonances. To illustrate the technique, we compare our measured spectra with the calculated, and find a close agreement.

We measure dielectric properties of oxalic acid, sucrose and protein crystals and polycarbonate sheet using standard terahertz time domain spectroscopy. We determine the absorbances in oxalic acid and sucrose crystals, using MOSTS technique. We compare the resonances in these two distinct methods. Then, we develop a protein model sample by sticking together two thin plates of sucrose and polycarbonate. We carry out standard THz-TDS and MOSTS measurements on the protein model sample. We show that we are able to isolate the vibrational modes from glassy background in protein model sample by using MOSTS.

Abstract:
In 1989 New Zealand is considering legislation which will make discrimination against lesbians, transexuals and gay men illegal. To increase children's understanding of sexual orientations educators need to have some knowledge of what children already understand and how children use their information. The three studies address this issue in spite of the difficulties in obtaining permission to ask children about homosexuality. A homophobia questionnaire was administered to 290 first year psychology students. They were also asked to recall their childhood feelings about gay people when they first met a homosexual and first understood the concept of homosexuality. Older women were the least homophobic. A second study was carried out with 5, 7, and 11 year old children in three schools with a family discrimination task. A third of the 11 year olds could label the couples of the same sex as gay, homosexual or lesbian and gave more positive items to the two-parent families. A third study involved 31 children from two-parent families and 32 from lesbian families. Out of the 63 six to ten year olds, 27 could define 'homosexual' and 'gay' and 37 could define lesbian. Twenty could use a strategy to recognise a lesbian. Although social discrimination against non-heterosexual orientations placed some constraints on this research, it yielded preliminary evidence for the emergence of children's understanding of sexual orientations between 7 and 11 years of age.

The objective of my PhD is to better understand the theoretical and empirical mechanisms of organizational-level entrepreneurship, and more precisely “entrepreneurial orientation” (EO). To better comprehend the phenomenon, this dissertation is the succession of four research efforts: - Identify what entrepreneurial orientation is by distinguishing from what it is not (entrepreneurial management) - Understand how the EO construct fits into the main models of firm-level entrepreneurship - Furnish a critical discussion of EO through the synthesis and mapping of existing issues, to unveil that there are actually four conceptualizations behind the term “EO”, among which the original conceptualization by Miller (1983), gone unheard or misunderstood - In line with Miller’s initial intention, I offer a taxonomy of firms according to their gestalt of EO, and the characteristics of each configuration This dissertation aims at contributing to entrepreneurship literature, to strategic management, and to general management by improving our understanding of firm-level entrepreneurship in SMEs

Chowdhury, Ahsan Habib. "Instructors' Orientation on Mathematical Meaning." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/103811.

Full text
Abstract:
Students often ask "when is this ever going to be useful?", "why are we doing this?", etc. when speaking about mathematics. If we take this as a question about 'meaningfulness', how can instructors respond and how do they even understand the terms 'meaningful' and 'meaning'? My dissertation looked at how college instructors see their instruction as meaningful or not. Drawing on social and cognitive perspectives of learning, I define four ways to think of what's 'meaningful' about mathematics. From a cognitive perspective, instructors can understand 'meaningful' as mathematical understanding versus understanding the significance of mathematics. From a social perspective where meaning is taken as the experiences of everyday life within communities, teachers can understand 'meaningful' as anything that engages students in practices the mathematics community engage in versus practices non-mathematics communities engage in (e.g. pushing computation or critical thinking as a means for maintaining social hierarchies). Using these four conceptions to categorize instructors' goals, this work focuses on how four undergraduate mathematics instructors thought of their instruction as meaningful and contextual and background factors that influenced those views.
Doctor of Philosophy
Students often ask "when is this ever going to be useful?" when speaking about mathematics. If we interpret this as seeking the meaning or purpose of their education, how can teachers respond and how do they even understand the terms 'meaningful' and 'meaning'? I wanted to look at how college instructors thought of this and how they addressed such a question in their classrooms. Drawing on different theories of learning, I outlined four ways to think of what's 'meaningful' about mathematics and then used these four ways to categorize how instructors think of their instruction as meaningful. To meet this end, I looked at some accounts of instructors' goals. My data came from college instructors of different mathematics classes: math for elementary education, math for liberal arts, statistics, and calculus. One important thing I found was that experiences with underserved communities or of not being 'a math person' corresponded with instructors' ability to attend to different kinds of 'meaningful' goals. What this might suggest is that educators may not feel prepared to respond to students' pursuit of meaning in diverse ways unless they have also personally struggled with it growing up or have personally experienced the consequences of disenfranchisement.
