Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The developmental sequence of adventitious organogenesis in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) embryos was analysed depending on two explant orientations. Embryos were placed vertically (cotyledons downward) or horizontally on half-strength Schenk and Hildebrandt medium containing 10 µM 6-benzylaminopurine. Samples were harvested at 2- to 3-day intervals for a 21-day period and observed using light and electron microscopy. In vertically placed embryos, cotyledons were inserted into the medium and became necrotic, while buds and phylloids developed on the upper part of the hypocotyl and in the apical area, 14 and 9 days after culture initiation respectively. In horizontally cultured embryos, organogenesis started in the intercotyledonary areas (day 11) and spread to the abaxial surface of cotyledonary margins outside the medium (day 14). A few buds also developed on the adaxial surface of cotyledons, starting on day 16. In the apical area, phylloid formation started on day 18. Nodules were induced in tissues in contact with the medium for both orientations, but in distinct sites. Embryo orientation influenced the localization of induction sites and the time sequence of organogenesis. The pattern for the mobilization of proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides prior to organogenesis was similar for both orientations. A depletion in proteins and polysaccharides did not occur in tissues in contact with the culture medium.Key words: adventitious organogenesis, embryo culture, explant orientation, jack pine, microscopy, Pinus banksiana.

Abstract:
Super-high density (SHD) is the latest innovation in almond growing. This new cropping system needs to be studied in different climates, soils, latitudes and cultivars in order to promote more efficient and sustainable orchard management. This study shows the effects of two row orientations and different canopy positions on leaf area index (LAI), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and biological, phenological and agronomical parameters of a SHD almond orchard. Total bud number and flower bud number were higher for N-S row orientation and more wood buds were detected in top layers. LAI was strongly influenced by layer, but not by row orientation. Row orientation did not affect blooming or ripening phenology. Fruit number per layer was higher for North–South (N-S) row orientation and in middle layers; fruit set showed the opposite trend to flower bud and fruit numbers, achieving higher values for East–West (E-W) row orientation. Hulled fruit yield was not affected by row orientation but by canopy height. N-S oriented rows showed a greater number of empty nuts than E-W, but no differences were found between layers. We concluded that in SHD almond orchards, row orientation is determinant for sustainable crop management.

Abstract:
Abstract Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites, and, therefore, must locate suitable hosts to ensure survival and reproduction. Their largely nocturnal activity suggests that chemosensory and thermosensory cues would play critical roles in host location. Yet, the importance of olfaction in host attraction of bed bugs remains unclear. We developed and validated a Y-tube, two-choice olfactometer and tested its suitability for investigating attraction to human odors (from skin swabs). Olfactometer orientation significantly affected the percentage of bed bugs that were activated by human odors, with significantly more bed bugs responding when the olfactometer was oriented vertically (bug introduced at bottom of the olfactometer) compared with all other orientations. Starved (7–10 d) adult males, mated females, and nymphs responded (47–77% moved up the olfactometer and made a choice) when human odors were present in the olfactometer, while starved, unmated females did not respond. Skin swabs from all five human participants elicited high response rates (65–82%), and bed bugs from four different populations responded to skin swabs (40–82% response rate). However, in all assays including those resulting in relatively low response rates, bed bugs exhibited >90% preference for human odors over blank controls. These results provide strong evidence that bed bugs can respond and orient towards human odors, independently of all other host cues. Furthermore, the validated olfactometer should enable rapid and efficient evaluations of bed bug behavioral responses to semiochemicals.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the measurement of the room temperature fracture toughness of 25-mm thick HY130 steel shielded-metal-arc weldments. The multipass butt welds were tested using different specimen geometries and orientations, and after various post-weld stress relief heat treatments. Where appropriate, comparisons are made between KIc and JIc data, including estimates based on both CTOD and stretch zone size measurements, for both parent metal and fusion zone material. Measured toughness for plate depends on whether the specimen tears at or before limit load, and thus on specimen size, but is independent of orientation and unaffected by thermal stress relief. Maximum load J for weldments is independent of specimen size or orientation, but CTOD decreases as specimen size decreases. Welds slowly cooled after stress relieving fail in a brittle manner, with very low CTOD values, even though the nominal critical stress intensities exceed 100 MPam.

Inflorescence, apical and lateral buds of Musa balbisiana ‘Kluai Hin’ (BBB group) were used to culture on MS medium supplemented with 22 μM BA and 15% (v/v) coconut water. Comparison of bud orientation showed that the best response of in vitro shoot tip proliferation was obtained with abaxial surface of buds lying down i.e. one side touching the medium (tilt). Mass propagation of shoot tips was obtained when cultured buds on MS medium containing 44 μM BA. Rooting was achieved by transferring the isolated shoots to MS basal medium without growth regulators. Rooted plantlets were acclimatized and successfully established in soil.

Abstract:
Introduction. The free vibration method is widely applied to detecting internal defects in rod and lamellar structural elements. In this work, it is used to diagnose a rod sample defect consisting in nonparallelism of the rod ends. The possibility of identifying a defect in the form of a bevel of one of the rod butts by the frequency spectrum of free damped longitudinal and transverse vibration after impact actions to the rod side or butt face is considered. Materials and methods. An experimental facility and a method of contact-free recording of the frequency spectrum of the rod natural vibration by its acoustic radiation spectrum are presented. Signs of a defect in the form of a split frequency of the rod transverse vibration are detected. At the same time, the maximum amplitudes of the split frequencies correspond to higher or lower frequencies depending on the face to which the impact is applied. This allows not only determining the presence of a defect in the form of the bevelled butt face, but also establishing its orientation relative to the side rod faces. Results. An approximate theoretical model is suggested. It explains the effect of frequency splitting in the presence of nonparallelism of the rod butts. For this, the frequency spectra of transverse vibration of two rods with lengths equal to the lengths of the smaller and the larger faces of the original rod with the bevel edge are considered. Experiments show that the differences in the natural frequencies of the bending vibration of these rods, which correspond to the same eigenmodes, are consistent with the differences in the split frequencies of the free damped transverse vibrations of the bevelled-face rod. At this, relationship between the split frequency amplitudes allows determining not only the presence of bevelled face, but also its location. Conclusions. The application and development of the method through the analysis of the natural vibration spectrum can lead to creation of remote quality control equipment for rod structural elements.

Abstract:
The paper’s general objective is to question the point of view whereby peripheries are seen only through a static downturn with no reflections on dynamicity or adaptation. The focus is set on the standpoints of actors in local government and their interface with the broader structures. The aim is to create a productive dialogue with evolutionary economic geography studies paying attention to actors and resilience studies where the human perspectives in adaptation are emphasised. The town of Lieksa, Finland, is used as a case study to exemplify a forest resource periphery located in relative isolation at the regional and national scale, but within a developed economy in Europe. The results, based on interviews with key local policy-makers, show that development did not stop at the time of the first bust despite the domination of the downturn. The study reveals two waves of restructuring which both include a type of regional bust followed by different kinds of institutional recovery. In general, the human adaptation appears as reactions reflecting the variation of giving up, forward-looking acceptance, desperate resistance, re-orientation with external support and search for renewal with an optimistic attitude. Above all, the resilience regarding the local governmental actors emphasises their flexible adaptability and ability to develop institutional capacities to tolerate their vulnerability, the uncertainties of the economic future and the difficulties of locals to influence it – and if anything – to act and bounce forward in spite of repetitive busts and restructuring phases.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The subject of the diploma thesis is to design a project study and a building program that would become a compromise between the requirements of the city of Brno and BUT in the area of Kraví hora in the Brno city center. The city of Brno would like to transform the area into a public park. But BUT considers it as its "family silver" because they realize its extraordinary value. Options of a constructions are really limited because of many area regulations. My proposal counts on the demolition of all existing buildings in the area, respects property area relations , protection zone, continuity with existing traffic roads, height regulation, imaginary raster of surrounding buildings, slope of terrain and orientation to the cardinal points. My suggest represents a study of five groups of objects which creating a rectangular raster. As a compromise solution, I chose the presentation and promotional areas of the individual faculties of BUT for the content of the buildings. Faculties have spaces for hobby groups for the public comprise all age groups included. I also designed the BUT Museum of History, a multimedia hall, a cafeteria, studios, a student leisure center and an observation tower with a climbing wall.

Abstract:
This experimental study investigates simultaneously the independent and interactive effect of two types of modeling and three goal orientations on a series of training outcomes (cognitive, affective, and behavioural). 275 trainees enrolled in a corporate training program have participated to this study. Trainees were randomly distributed in two different conditions showing either a positive or a mixed model display. Participant’s goal orientation (learning, proving, avoiding) were measured prior to experimentation using the Goal Orientation Scale developed by VandeWalle (1997). Regarding cognitive outcomes, results show that trainees who were avoidance oriented, perceived more positively the utility of the training content when exposed to a positive model display. Concerning affective outcomes, results show that trainees who were performance oriented, perceived a higher level of self-efficacy following training when exposed to a positive model display. In the case of behavior reproduction, results show that trainees, who were learning mastery oriented, were more likely to reproduce behaviours subjects to training better when exposed to a mixed model display. Theoretical and practical implications for future behavior modeling training research are discussed.

Lemire, Isabelle. "L’incidence de la relation maître-élève sur la motivation d’élèves du primaire provenant de milieux défavorisés." Thèse, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/6271.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research was to assess the impact of the teacher-student relationship on students’ motivation, particularly within low income families. The study conducted was based on the hypothesis that better teacher-student relationship lead to a higher level of motivation for the student. In order to verify this hypothesis, our objectives were to analyse the predictive value of the teacher-student relationship on school motivational determinants in order to identify which aspects of teacher-student relationship, in an attachment perspective (caring, supportive or conflictive), could better predict each of the motivational variables. Also, we wanted to identify which of these motivational variables are most affected by the quality of the teacher-student relationship. Some of the determinants come from Expectancy-Value models (perceived competence, interest, perceived utility of school in general, and for French and Mathematics). Other determinants come from goal orientation theory (mastery goal, performance goal and work avoidance goal). We also verified the moderator effect of gender in the attachment variables and the motivation. Our results show that the student-teacher relationship can predict interest in schooling in general, specific interest in French and Mathematics, and the presence of avoidance goal. We also showed that a supporting relationship could be the aspect of teacher-student relationship which mostly predicts the motivational variables. It was also surprising to see the impact of a caring relationship on the three dimensions of interest (general and subject related). Interest in general was also the motivational variable best predicted by the teacher-student relationship. We also showed that the perception of conflict is the aspect of the teacher-student relationship which could best predict some of the motivational determinants. However, our results could not support the moderator effect of gender on the relationship.

Grenier, Fanny. "Étude des types de compliments et leurs liens avec l’estime de soi et les processus motivationnels d’enfants de 8 à 12 ans." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/24818.

Full text
Abstract:
Different lines of research have focused on compliments that parents should avoid in order not to jeopardize the development of children’s self-esteem and optimal motivational processes (e.g. Kamins and Dweck, 1999; Kast and Konnor, 1988). However, no study had yet attempted to identify potentially optimal compliments to favor these developments. Through three studies, this exploratory thesis thus aimed at comparing different compliments conceptualized as positive in the literature using a sample of mother-child dyads (N = 65, mean age of the children = 10.20 years). The first study examined the relations between different types of compliments, on one hand, and children's self-esteem and motivational processes on the other, while controlling for demographic variables of children’s sex and age. Given that the different types of compliments were likely to coexist but were never compared in a single study, their relations with the dependent variables were examined while also controlling for their interrelations using multiple regressions. The second study aimed at highlighting the links between children's perception of their mother typical parenting practices and the different types of compliments conceptualized as positive in the literature. To investigate these relations, we relied on questionnaires filled out by two different respondents (children and their mothers). The third study relied on an experimental design to investigate the situational impacts of comparative, result-oriented and descriptive compliments on children's perceived competence (or their situational self-esteem) and motivational processes, with a focus on the potential impacts of three moderators likely to accentuate, or reduce, the effect of the experimental manipulation (i.e. sex, age and children's global self-esteem). The main results show that it is possible to provide a comprehensive portrait of the compliments conceptualized as positive in the literature by distinguishing four types: comparative, result-oriented, process-oriented and descriptive compliments. Two of these compliments, namely result-oriented compliments and process-oriented compliments, seem to be the most used. The thesis also reveals that only descriptive compliments seem positively related to children's self-esteem (global and situational), especially for girls and children reporting lower than average self-esteem. Through the pursuit of these three objectives, this thesis contributes to the advancement of knowledge on compliments, to self-determination theory (SDT) and helps identify intervention avenues that will allow parents to intervene and communicate optimally with their children.

Cadieux, Jonathan. "The Double-edged Nature of Antigay Prejudice Confrontation: Confronting Antigay Prejudice is Effective but Comes at a Cost." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/33348.

Abstract:
Although confronting prejudice can be effective in reducing bias, it is potentially costly to confronters. Research on confronting racism or sexism has shown confronters from the targeted group are viewed more negatively than confronters who are not. It is unknown whether confronting antigay bias produces similar reactions, particularly since group membership is concealable. In my research, participants read two male profiles followed by a scripted conversation which included an antigay comment. Profiles varied in their depiction of the confronting individual’s sexual orientation, and conversations either included a confrontation or not. I found that confronting antigay bias is double-edged. On the positive side, confrontation increased awareness that prejudice occurred, and this awareness mediated the relation between confrontation viewing and participants’ own intention to confront. On the negative, individuals may be deterred from confronting antigay prejudice because confronters were perceived as more gay (a stigmatized identity), regardless of actual orientation.

Abstract:
Despite the evident importance of the youth question in the ambit of modern society, in practice the consideration of young people as a category of consumers frequently prevails over the valorisation of their role as citizens. This survey – triggered by a synergy between the Provincial Authority and the University – focuses the attitudes and orientations of young people, both Italian and immigrants, in the Province of Florence. The objective is to bring to the fore the dynamic and more strictly civic aspect, so as to explore themes such as the shifts in values and the security, identity and participation of the new generations. The analysis effectively brings to light a widespread ambivalence, comprising both the innovative characteristics of individualism and other features that hark back to traditionally consolidated legacies. What emerges is the sense of a social mutation that is already under way, but still in transition, in which young people play a role of considerable significance.

At the core of working with people who experience mental illnesses is a collaboration in pursuit of helping them actualize their goals in work and love. Their recovery is therefore a unique process of personal development, with psychiatrists and other human services professionals practicing with recovery orientation. Specific skills, techniques, and services are identified as recovery oriented. In this chapter, through relating one person’s story, the reader can understand how recovery orientation becomes operational in a clearly systematic manner, using such techniques as motivational interviewing, shared decision-making, rehabilitative focus, person-centered treatment planning, and the use of peer supports. In this way, it is illustrated how recovery orientation is not only richly humanitarian but also evidence-based.

Chapter 4 pivots around experiences of race, and explores social and cultural habitation to sensory perceptions and meanings. It discusses the sensorium of race perception beyond the visual, and provides historical and cultural examples of how perceiving bodily Others emerges in and is maintained by sensory experiences. It explores how understanding our orientations and perspectives on the world as fundamentally embedded in and emerging from our bodily manner of existence allows us to begin grasping how it is not reason or intellectual reflection alone by which we can address perceptual alignments that might appear problematic to us. Habits and socio-cultural practices are not simply matters of belief or conviction held in a disembodied mind, but are embedded within our bodily perceptual orientation.

Abstract:
THE ROOTS of implementation science (IS) in cancer in some sense date back to the earliest days of uncovering cancer’s etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, although it was not called that. Indeed, unlocking the mysteries of cancer and determining effective ways to intervene began not in the lab but, rather, the clinic. As Mukherjee recounted in the seminal work, The Emperor of All Maladies, 1 cancer had been the subject of clinical examination for centuries, and the drive to optimize care began in those early days. As opposed to the largely separate worlds of research discovery and care delivery that exist today, scientific research and cancer treatment coexisted. In addition, epidemiologic observations of risk factors affecting oncogenesis developed targets for what types of prevention programs needed to be implemented. Naturally, the challenges of what exactly to implement and how best to implement have been with us throughout time.

Abstract:
Emerging adulthood presents a unique developmental milieu for sexual orientation and identity development. Over the past 10 years, a body of research has begun delineating contemporary emerging adults’ understandings of their sexual orientation and processes of sexual identity development. This scholarship has increasingly recognized the complexity and multidimensional nature of sexual identity development among both heterosexual and sexual-minority individuals. This review covers current conceptualizations of sexual orientation and identity, traditional and contemporary models of sexual identity development, and recent empirical literature assessing developmental trajectories, consistency between and within dimensions of sexual orientation and identity, stability of these dimensions, and issues of sexual identity labeling and categorization. This scholarship suggests that increased attention to diversity within and between sexual identity groups is warranted but also reveals notable patterns and categories that should be considered as the field moves forward.

Might the explanation of some temporal asymmetries simply be that time itself is asymmetric? Some people believe that time flows, and others that it is intrinsically directed. But what do such claims mean, precisely? This chapter considers three ways of understanding flow—through a distinguished present, an objective temporal direction, and a flux-like character—and finds them all wanting. It considers, in particular, the idea that the world possesses a time orientation, critically scrutinizing the theories of John Earman and Tim Mauldin on temporal orientation and time's arrow.

Abstract:
This is one of key chapters of the book presenting the argument of partisan government. This chapter interrogates the subnational variation in labour reforms through partisan governments and suggests regional political economy as critical to shaping orientation of partisan governments. It critically analyses the existing party-based interpretation of reform and shows that it is the instrumental interest assuaging the interests of support base that explain government orientation to labour reform. Through a caste/class analysis of political parties, the chapter highlights that significant business support and socio-economically homogeneous dominant support base characterize states with greater market flexibility. In contrast, when the dominant support base of party is heterogeneous and wide, the pace of reform is significantly muted. Partisan configuration—the socio-economic support base of government—determines not only the orientation of policies but also the interrelation between government and various interest groups in society.

Specifically, we explore how time orientation, as a less explored cultural dimension, could affect Hong Kong’s social norms and collective behaviors in translating creative potentials into viable innovations for business. Through an in-depth indigenous study on its entrepreneurial activities and ecosystem, we explicate the consequences of time orientation on the situation of crouching innovation in Hong Kong. This chapter concludes with suggestions to turn the vicious cycle of innovation into a virtuous cycle by igniting the self-propelling innovation process in the society.

This chapter is an account of Cohen’s early writings as a folk psychologist or anthropologist working within the new discipline of Völkerpsychologie founded by Moritz Lazarus and Heymann Steinthal (1865–1870). His work was very much historicist and empiricist in orientation and investigated such topics as the origins of religion and poetry. But there was also a direction toward logic and criticism, which evolved from his early interest in epistemology and the critical philosophy. Already in these years Cohen adopted a Kantian interpretation of Plato which will be decisive for all his later philosophy.

AbstractPrEP in Scotland came with great expectation and celebration. As the first country in the UK to offer PrEP through the National Health Service (NHS), Scotland was heralded as a leader in HIV prevention. This chapter asks: how has the anticipation of PrEP shaped provision and use within the health system; how does the emergent and ongoing orientation of PrEP towards specific risk practices affect awareness, access and use, but also wider narratives of prevention, inequalities and ‘progress’; and, what kinds of biosexual citizens does it demand and produce? The chapter explores how the implementation of PrEP and the specific nature of its roll-out contribute to an orientation towards certain (gendered) PrEP users and PrEP use. It considers how the anticipation of PrEP as a biotechnology for particular risk practices, bodies and communities shapes promissory HIV prevention futures and determines what success and ‘celebration’ could be.

This article examines Remigio de’ Girolami’s treatise De modis rerum. This metaphysical treatise addresses all aspects of this discipline, which, in the footsteps of his master Thomas Aquinas, Remigio understands as an ontology. The investigation confirms the Thomistic orientation of Remigio’s philosophy but also highlights Remigio’s acute perception of the complex relationships between thought, language and reality. Thus, the author argues that this treatise proposes an innovative approach to metaphysics based on the study of the meanings of key notions of the discipline.

This study explores the factors that contribute to problematic gaming among players of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMOs for short), in particular, the game World of Warcraft. It examines motivations based on the Self Determination Theory (SDT) and motivations based on Yee’s player orientations. A total of 128 gamers participated in the online survey. Results showed that achievement and immersion player orientations are correlated with extrinsic motivation in terms of external, introjected and identified regulations, as well as intrinsic motivation. Social orientation is only correlated with identified regulation and intrinsic motivation. Problematic gaming is also correlated with all types of extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation, as well as with achievement and immersion player orientations but not with social player orientation. Achievement orientation and introjected regulation both positively predicted problematic gaming, while identified regulation negatively predicted it.

This chapter details the contemporary assault on Stoic moral psychology from the pens of the French Augustinians. The influence of the Stoic revival of the sixteenth century continued to be felt in a variety of spheres in seventeenth-century France, and gave rise to a variegated landscape which brought about several orientations toward the Stoics. The chapter considers one such orientation in particular — the nascent anti-Stoicism of the 1640s. This took on its distinctive form in the pages of Corneille Jansen's Augustinus (1640), but, as the chapter demonstrates, such an orientation was not by any means confined to narrow Jansenist circles.

Abstract:
An entry level consumer priced 3d-printer, the MakerBot Replicator 2x, was used to print specimen to conduct tensile, flexural and fatigue testing. Average priced, generic brand PLA material was used (similar to the filament a home user may purchase). Specimen were printed at raster orientation angles of 0°, 45° and 90° to test orientation effects on part strength. PLA filament was also tensile tested. Tensile testing of the 3d-printed specimens showed that the 45° raster orientation angle made the strongest specimen at an ultimate tensile strength of 64 MPa. The 0° and 90° raster orientation were not much less at 58 MPa and 54 MPa. A 3-point bending fixture was used to conduct flexural testing on printed specimen. For this type of testing, the 0° raster orientation produced the strongest parts with an ultimate bending stress of 102 MPa. Both the 45° and 90° raster orientations had similar results at 90 MPa and 86 MPa. For the fatigue testing, there was no clear best option, but there was a clearly worst option, the 90° raster orientation. This orientation clearly had lower fatigue lives than either of the other two raster orientations. The other two raster orientations, 0° and 45°, were very similar. PLA filament testing using bollard style grips, showed that the PLA filament exhibited mechanical properties similar to that of printed specimen — when tested at high enough strain rates that creep damage didn’t play a significant role. This may lead to implications for recycling failed 3d-print jobs and turning it back into reusable filament.

Abstract Spherical piezoelectric motors (SPMs) apply piezoelectric materials as stators to generate modal responses for rotor orientation. The SPMs have the advantages of simple structure and compact size but may suffer from the difficulty of orientation manipulation. This paper presents a novel electrode configuration based SPM design for simple multi degree-of-freedom (DOF) orientation manipulation. Four piezoelectric actuating units are adopted as stators to generate 12 orientations through the integration and switch of two vibration modes of each piezoelectric actuator, including lateral mode and longitudinal mode. The dynamic characteristics associated with the design parameters at each vibration mode are experimentally obtained to evaluate the performance of the proposed SPM design.

Abstract:
Recent studies on cell orientation have shown that cells can actively sense the elastic properties of their environment and strengthen contacts and cytoskeleton in a direction of large effective stiffness. For example, it was found that cells oriented perpendicular to clamped boundaries whilst parallel to free boundaries. It was also suggested that active mechanosensing in an elastically anisotropic medium might lead to cell orientation. In this paper, we first develop an analytical force-dipole solution in anisotropic materials. We then apply this solution to investigate the effect of substrate anisotropy on cell orientation. In our numerical examples, the substrate will be assumed to be cubic, but oriented in different orientations. The interactive energy of the cells is calculated for different boundary conditions (free and clamped) on the surface of the anisotropic substrate.

A study was performed to experimentally characterize the effect of fluid loading on the heat transport performance of wicked heat pipes. In particular, experiments were performed to characterize the performance of heat pipes with insufficient fluid to saturate the wick and excess fluid for a variety of orientations. It was found that excess working fluid in the heat pipe increased the thermal resistance of the heat pipe, but increased maximum heat flux through the pipe in a horizontal orientation. The thermal performance of the heat pipe was reduced when the amount of working fluid was less than required to saturate the wick, but the maximum heat flux through the heat pipe was significantly reduced at all orientations. It was also found in this case the performance of this heat pipe deteriorated once dry-out occurred.

Abstract:
The high power density of emerging electronic devices is driving the transition from remote cooling, which relies on conduction and spreading, to embedded cooling, which extracts dissipated heat on-site. Two-phase microgap coolers employ the forced flow of dielectric fluids undergoing phase change in a heated channel within or between devices. Such coolers must work reliably in all orientations for a variety of applications (e.g., vehicle-based equipment), as well as in microgravity and high-g for other applications (e.g., spacecraft and aircraft). The lack of acceptable models and correlations for orientation- and gravity-independent operation has limited the use of two-phase coolers in such applications. Previous research has revealed that gravitational acceleration plays a diminishing role in establishing flow regimes and transport rates as the channel size shrinks, but there is considerable variation among the proposed microscale criteria and limited research on two-phase flows in low aspect ratio microgap channels. Reliable criteria for achieving orientation- and gravity-independent flow boiling would enable emerging systems to exploit this thermal management technique and streamline the technology development process. As a first step toward understanding the effect of gravity on two-phase microgap flow and transport, in the present effort the authors have studied the effect of evaporator orientation and mass flux on near-saturated flow boiling of HFE7100 in a 1.01 mm tall by 13.0 mm wide by 12.7 mm long microgap channel. Orientation-independence, defined as achieving similar critical heat fluxes, heat transfer coefficients, and flow regimes across evaporator orientations, was achieved for mass fluxes of 400 kg/m2-s and greater. The present results are compared to published criteria for achieving gravity-independence.

Abstract:
Abstract The design and implementation of vibratory bowl feeders involves the analysis of the behavior of the parts as they are conveyed up the bowl track. This paper presents the results obtained in a series of experiments which study the effect of the vibration amplitude in the feeder on the dynamic orientations of a family of parts. The objective of the study is to investigate how complex parts behave in a vibratory bowl feeder and try to establish a relationship between the orientation of the parts and the vibration amplitude of the bowl feeder. The study consisted of experimenting with four types of connectors that were similar in shape but differ in proportions. By experimenting with a part family, we intend to establish and generalize in the near future a relationship between the tendency of the parts to fall in certain orientations, the amplitude of vibration in the feeder, and geometric features or mass properties. The acquired knowledge could then be incorporated in computer aided design programs, together with existing theory on feeder design, to specify orientation devices and operating parameters in the vibratory bowl feeder.

Full text
Abstract:
Oil-film flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements using a five-hole probe have been conducted to investigate the flow characteristics and aerodynamic loss distributions of film-cooling jets with compound angle orientations. For a fixed inclination angle of the injection hole, measurements are performed at various orientation angles to the direction of the mainstream in the case of three velocity ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. Flow visualizations for the velocity ratio of 2.0 show that the increase in the orientation angle furnishes better film coverage on the test surface, but gives rise to large flow disturbances in the mainstream. A near-wall flow model has been proposed based on the surface flow visualizations. It has also been found from the flow measurements that as the orientation angle increases, a pair of counter-rotating vortices turn to a single strong one, and the aerodynamic loss field is closely related to the secondary flow. Even in the case of the velocity ratio of 2.0, aerodynamic loss is produced within the jet region when the orientation angle is large. Regardless of the velocity ratio, the mass-averaged aerodynamic loss increases with increasing orientation angle, the effect of which on aerodynamic loss is pronounced when the velocity ratio is large.

Abstract:
The orientation of constructed levee embankments relative to alluvial swales is a useful measure for identifying regions susceptible to backward erosion piping (BEP). This research was conducted to create an automated, efficient process to classify patterns and orientations of swales within the Lower Mississippi Valley (LMV) to support levee risk assessments. Two machine learning algorithms are used to train the classification models: a convolutional neural network and a U-net. The resulting workflow can identify linear topographic features but is unable to reliably differentiate swales from other features, such as the levee structure and riverbanks. Further tuning of training data or manual identification of regions of interest could yield significantly better results. The workflow also provides an orientation to each linear feature to support subsequent analyses of position relative to levee alignments. While the individual models fall short of immediate applicability, the procedure provides a feasible, automated scheme to assist in swale classification and characterization within mature alluvial valley systems similar to LMV.

Using digital traces to investigate demographic behaviours, I leverage in this paper aggregated web search data to develop a Future Orientation Index for 200 countries and territories across the world. This index is expressed as the ratio of Google search volumes for ‘next year’ (e.g., 2021) to search volumes for ‘current year’ (e.g., 2020), adjusted for country-level internet penetration rates. I show that countries with lower levels of future orientation also have higher levels of fertility. Fertility rates decrease quickly as future orientation levels increase; but at the highest levels of future orientation, this correlation flattens out. Theoretically, I reconstruct the role that varying degrees of future orientation might play in fertility decisions by incorporating advances in behavioural economics into a traditional quantity-quality framework à la Becker.

Abstract:
Basic figures: – A large majority of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that gay men and lesbians (88%), bisexual people (87%) and transgender people (85%) “should be free to live their own life as they wish”. – Women were significantly more likely than men to agree with the above statement in respect to every identity group. People aged 25-34 years were significantly more likely than the general population to disagree with the statement. – On average, respondents were comfortable having people with a minority sexual orientation or gender identity as neighbours. Responses were significantly more positive towards having lesbians (M=8.51), bisexual people (M=8.40) and gay men (M=8.38) as neighbours compared to transgender people (M=7.98). – High levels of empathy were expressed with crime victims across all identity categories. Respondents were similarly empathetic towards heterosexual couples (M= 9.01), lesbian couples (M=9.05) and transgender persons (M=8.86) who are physically assaulted on the street. However, gay couples (M= 8.55) attracted significantly less empathy than a lesbian couple in similar circumstances. – Respondents were significantly more likely to intervene on behalf of a victim with a disability (M=7.86), than on behalf of an LGBT victim (M=6.96), but significantly more likely to intervene on behalf of an LGBT victim than an Irish Traveller (M= 5.82). – Respondents reported similar willingness to intervene on behalf of a lesbian pushed and slapped on the street by a stranger (M=7.38) and a transgender person (M= 7.03) in the same situation. Respondents were significantly more unlikely to intervene on behalf of a gay man (M=6.63) or bisexual person (M= 6.89) compared to a lesbian. – A third of respondents (33%) disagreed that violence against lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender people is a “serious problem in my country”, but more than half (58%) agreed that hate crimes hurt more than equivalent, non-bias, crimes.

Abstract:
The French composer Francis Poulenc had a profound admiration and empathy for the writings of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. That empathy was rooted in shared aspects of the artistic temperament of the two figures but was also undoubtedly reinforced by Poulenc’s fellow-feeling on a human level. As someone who wrestled with his own homosexuality and who kept his orientation and his relationships apart from his public persona, Poulenc would have felt an instinctive affinity for a figure who endured similar internal conflicts but who, especially in his later life and poetry, was more open about his sexuality. Lorca paid a heavy price for this refusal to dissimulate; his arrest in August 1936 and his assassination the following day, probably by Nationalist militia, was accompanied by taunts from his killers about his sexuality. Everything about the Spanish poet’s life, his artistic affinities, his personal predilections and even the relationship between these and his death made him someone to whom Poulenc would be naturally drawn and whose untimely demise he would feel keenly and might wish to commemorate musically. Starting with the death of both his parents while he was still in his teens, reinforced by the sudden loss in 1930 of an especially close friend, confidante and kindred spirit, and continuing throughout the remainder of his life with the periodic loss of close friends, companions and fellow-artists, Poulenc’s life was marked by a succession of bereavements. Significantly, many of the dedications that head up his compositions are ‘to the memory of’ the individual named. As Poulenc grew older, and the list of those whom he had outlived lengthened inexorably, his natural tendency towards the nostalgic and the elegiac fused with a growing sense of what might be termed a ‘survivor’s anguish’, part of which he sublimated into his musical works. It should therefore come as no surprise that, during the 1940s, and in fulfilment of a desire that he had felt since the poet’s death, he should turn to Lorca for inspiration and, in the process, attempt his own act of homage in two separate works: the Violin Sonata and the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’. This exposition attempts to unfold aspects of the two men’s aesthetic pre-occupations and to show how the parallels uncovered cast reciprocal light upon their respective approaches to the creative process. It also examines the network of enfolded associations, musical and autobiographical, which link Poulenc’s two compositions commemorating Lorca, not only to one another but also to a wider circle of the composer’s works, especially his cycle setting poems of Guillaume Apollinaire: ‘Calligrammes’. Composed a year after the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’, this intricately wrought collection of seven mélodies, which Poulenc saw as the culmination of an intensive phase in his activity in this genre, revisits some of ‘unheard voices’ and ‘unseen shadows’ enfolded in its predecessor. It may be viewed, in part, as an attempt to bring to fuller resolution the veiled but keenly-felt anguish invoked by these paradoxical properties.
