Abstract:
Research demonstrates that situational uncertainty or crisis strongly influences the endorsement of the more charismatic or decisive leadership styles and that inspirational communication is at the heart of these styles. However, there is currently little understanding of what leaders should convey through their communication to be endorsed in crisis. Based on regulatory focus theory, we argue that times of crisis make leaders who use more promotion-oriented communication more likely to be endorsed and leaders who use more prevention-oriented communication less likely to be endorsed. Results of Study 1, an archival study of U.S. presidents, show that presidents who use more promotion-oriented communication are more endorsed but only if economic growth is low or if inflation is high, while no effects of the use of prevention orientation of communication surfaces. Results of Study 2, a laboratory experiment, show that leaders who communicate a promotion orientation, as compared to a prevention orientation, motivate higher performance in participants in a crisis condition, but that there is no difference in a no-crisis (i.e. control) condition. Finally, results of Study 3, a scenario experiment, demonstrate that organizational leaders that communicate more promotion-oriented (as opposed to more prevention-oriented) have a higher chance of being endorsed but only in times of crisis and that this effect is mediated by followers’ motivation to realize the plans of the leader.

Abstract:
We investigate how the 2008–2012 economic crisis relates to entrepreneurs’ confidence ten years later and, in turn, their venture’s entrepreneurial orientation. Conceptually, we introduce the new concept of ‘hard times’ to capture an entrepreneur’s sense of their venture’s hardship during the crisis. Theoretically, we extend ideas on imprinting, to build the argument that hard times cause a persistent reduction in an entrepreneur’s entrepreneurial self-efficacy and sense of job security, both of which in turn cause a contemporaneous reduction in their venture’s entrepreneurial orientation. We contrast the crisis imprinting hypothesis with a hypothesis from the more established behavioral theory of the firm. Strikingly, rich data of about 300 Flemish entrepreneurs and their ventures are in line with a small crisis imprinting effect.

Abstract:
Summary: The remediation processes in psychosocial crisis intervention were modeled focusing on cognitive orientation. Frequent observations and subsequent process modeling constitute a novel approach to process research and reveal process-outcome associations. A sample of 40 inpatients who were assigned to treatment in a crisis intervention unit was monitored in order to study the process of crisis intervention. The process data consisted of patients' self-ratings of the variables mood, tension, and cognitive orientation, which were assessed three times a day throughout hospitalization (M = 22.6 days). Linear time series models (vector autoregression) of the process data were computed to describe the prototypical dynamic patterns of the sample. Additionally, the outcome of crisis intervention was evaluated by pre-post questionnaires. Linear trends were found pointing to an improvement of mood, a reduction of tension, and an increase of outward cognitive orientation. Time series modeling showed that, on average, outward cognitive orientation preceded improved mood. The time series models partially predicted the treatment effect, notably the outcome domain “reduction of social anxiety,” yet did not predict the domain of symptom reduction. In conclusion, crisis intervention should focus on having patients increasingly engage in outward cognitive orientation in order to stabilize mood, reduce anxiety, and activate their resources.

Abstract:
During the COVID-19, Muslim entrepreneurs had to adapt to remain resilient. These Muslim entrepreneurs can rely on entrepreneurial personality and skill traits to survive a crisis. This paper aims to expand the analysis of the several contributing factors to the resiliency of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) managed by Muslim entrepreneurs, as identified in various scholarly publications. Additionally, this study emphasises the significance of entrepreneurial personality and skill traits, investigates the mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation on the link between entrepreneurial traits and SME resilience, and explores the moderating effects of Muslim religiosity. Furthermore, it delves into specific Islamic principles such as “ikhtiar” (effort) and “tawakkal” (reliance on God), which contribute to the resilience of Muslim entrepreneurs. This study centres on Muslim business owners of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in West Sumatra. The final sample obtained was 452 Muslim entrepreneurs. This research was conducted in 2021, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings indicate that entrepreneurial traits influence the resiliency of Muslim entrepreneurs in two distinct ways: directly and indirectly via entrepreneurial orientation. This research advances the entrepreneurial literature in three ways. First, research on entrepreneurial resilience is extended, considering the different dimensions of entrepreneurial personality and traits (negotiation skills, risk-taking, optimism, locus of control, and need for achievement). Second, this study explores the mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation on the relationship between entrepreneurial personality and skill traits toward entrepreneurial resilience. Finally, this study specifically discusses Muslim entrepreneurs as research respondents.

Abstract:
Within the history of concepts, the conceptualization of time is central. Historical actors rely on their experiences for orientation in the present, and they produce expectations about the future. To imagine their horizons of expectation they need concepts about the future. When the future becomes difficult to conceive of for a variety of reasons, they take refuge in concepts describing unruly and uncertain times such as crisis or chaos. Times when the future is completely out of reach because the present seems unbearable might be termed catastrophic. Also, historians in general make use of temporal concepts to narrate their histories. They are like time bandits that manipulate time. Following last year’s conference organized by the History of Concepts Group on key concepts in times of crisis, this article takes issue with the discussion of concepts describing bad times within conceptual history.

Abstract:
Has companies’ strategic orientation become more important in times of crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic? Do companies feel the need to work strategically, and what impact can strategic management have on a company's profitability? The objective of the paper is to find out what features differ profitable companies from less profitable or loss-making companies in the current times from the view of strategic management. Features such as (1) the importance of vision; (2) orientation of strategic goals; (3) the activities of strategic plan creation were considered. The paper hides the answers to mentioned questions and the attitudes to the established research hypotheses. The research sample consists of 365 industrial companies. The Chi-square test, which measures the relationship between two categorical variables, is applied in the study. The results provide the knowledge that strategic research issues are a distinguishing element between profitable and less profitable or loss-making companies. It follows that strategic management is one of the necessary prerequisites for the company’s success, even in times of crisis.

Abstract:
Since more than a decade, the EU is confronted with a number of crises that significantly changed the environment under which the EU operates in the field of gender equality. Evidence shows, that in many European countries, the different crises have led to a deprioritisation of gender equality policies. However, the way in which the new Gender Action Plan for External Relations 2015–2020 of the European Union addresses and operationalises gender equality suggests in contrast a policy shift towards an intensified commitment and more comprehensive understanding of gender. Against this background, this article analyses, first, how the content and the conceptual orientation of gender equality policies in European Union’s external relations have changed in the light of post-crisis recommendations. Second, the article scrutinises the ways in which the European Union tries to tackle the credibility crisis through increasingly intensified and operationalised policy procedures. The argument put forth is that the gender-related indicators in the Gender Action Plan translate complex societal processes into a technical data-based framework and thereby depoliticise gender equality by simulating a technocratic, evidence-based and quantified form of politics.

Abstract:
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine mental health during the coronavirus pandemic crisis and its explanation by personal and national level coping resources. This question was examined in the midst of a political crisis in Israel among voters from two different political orientations. Method: Questionnaires were delivered to a sample of 396 Israeli Jews, of them 180 (45.5%) right-wing and 216 (54.5%) left-wing voters. Right-wing voters presented higher levels of mental health during the crisis as compared to left-wing voters. Results: Right-wing voters also reported stronger levels of national coping resources such as sense of national coherence and trust in governmental institutions. Moreover, mental health was predicted only by personal resources among left-wing voters, while among the right-wing participants national resources were significant as well. Discussion: The results highlight the role of political orientation and low trust in the government as a possible risk factor for mental health even in times of global pandemic crisis.

Abstract:
During crises the newsmedia are expected to provide relevant and accurate information to help citizens comprehend the crisis and act upon it. As a source-driven practice, journalism relies on a variety of sources to validate news and provide perspectives. The disruptive nature of a crisis though raises questions about how journalists select sources and what these choices say about professional autonomy and criticality. Considering source choices as newsgathering venues and strategies, and drawing on semi-structured interviews with journalists in Greece and Cyprus, the study explores the factors that shaped journalists’ sourcing practices during the COVID-19 crisis. We find that journalists over-relied on political sources and selective authoritative voices compromising the tenets of verification and independence. The fear to convey inaccurate or ‘biased’ information amid disinformation flows, bolstered journalist's elite orientation. Professional precarity and economic pressures are found to further worsen the ‘lived experience’ of journalists limiting their ability to question and scrutinise power in times of crises.

Abstract:
Purpose Starting from the assumption that knowledge becomes all the more important for movements in times of crisis, as old structures are challenged and new ones envisaged and proved feasible, the purpose of this paper is to suggest ways to expand the toolkit of social movement studies in order to empirically address knowledge practices as a meaningful part of contemporary progressive activism. Design/methodology/approach The authors start by arguing that, in their effort to pursue or resist social and political changes, contemporary progressive social movements form collective spaces of knowledge production that are true laboratories for innovation. For this reason, the authors begin by making a case for accounting more explicitly for knowledge production within social movement studies - not as a substitution for but, rather, as a necessary complement to current cultural approaches. Building on extant literature on the nexus between movements and knowledge, the authors then outline the peculiarities of movement knowledge. Findings On these bases, the authors outline the core components of what the authors call repertoires of knowledge practices - that is, the set of practices that foster the coordination of disconnected, local, and highly personal experiences and rationalities within a shared cognitive system able to provide movements and their supporters with a common orientation for making claims and acting collectively to produce social, political, and cultural changes. Originality/value The authors conclude by identifying some promising avenues of research to further develop the understanding of movement practices of knowledge production and transmission.

Abstract:
Practical divinization describes the practice of connecting our spiritual and psychological development to conscious participation with the earth. This essay investigates the concept of Christian divinization in dialogue with Jung’s conception of individuation. Historically, the idea of divinization emerged from new concepts of personhood synthesized in the 1st century CE. Examining the ancient roots of personhood illuminates concepts of self and divinization within a contemporary theological and psychological context. Annis Pratt’s analysis of the archetype of “green-world epiphany,” evident in much of the literature written by women in the past three centuries, exemplifies the ethos inherent in practical divinization. A new interpretation of Matthew’s “Worry Not Gospel” imagines a female orientation of the text and further confirms the need for an embodied and fully participatory wisdom in relation to the earth. Practical divinization issues forth a call to action and a cause for hope in the face of ecological crisis.

Abstract:
The present study investigated the international intermedia network agenda setting among eleven news websites from four different languages and three political orientations, in the aftermath of the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Our study aimed to explore the potential for a given medium to shape the agenda of other countries’ media, and to identify if language or political orientation may influence intermedia network agenda setting at both the issue and attribute levels. The findings of our study are consistent with previous research on intermedia agenda setting, which has shown that media outlets can influence the issues and attributes that are deemed important by other media outlets. Our study extends this research by exploring the dynamics of intermedia agenda setting in the international sphere and for an unexpected situation. Our findings showed that intermedia network agenda setting occurred among the websites studied, with high correlations between issues and a greater number of relationships between attributes. Interestingly, we found that the New York Times was not able to set an agenda in either issue or attribute levels in contrast to Tehran Times which has one of the most powerful agendas to affect many other agendas including New York Times.

Wallaschek, Stefan. "The Discursive Appeal to Solidarity and Partisan Journalism in Europe’s Migration Crisis." Social Inclusion 7, no. 2 (2019): 187–97. http://dx.doi.org/10.17645/si.v7i2.1963.

Abstract:
The article analyses the discursive appeal to solidarity in the mass media during the unfolding of Europe’s migration crisis. Solidarity was claimed by numerous actors in the public discourse to legitimise political decisions and mobilise public opinion. While it seems that the call for solidarity was shared by many actors, media studies show the ‘partisan journalism’ of media outlets. Thus, the political orientation of media outlets influences their coverage of public debates. Hence, to what extent do different quality newspapers cover the same solidarity claims in times of crisis? In order to answer this question, the crisis coverage of two German and two Irish newspapers with centre-left and centre-right political orientations is examined via the discourse network methodology. Germany is selected due to high political parallelism and a strong affectedness by the crisis, while Ireland is selected because of low political parallelism and a weak affectedness by the migration crisis. The findings demonstrate that partisan journalism persists during Europe’s migration crisis. Especially German party actors are present in both countries, underpinning the central position of Germany. Regarding the appeal to solidarity, political solidarity claims prevail in all four newspapers, indicating the political-institutional asymmetry in the Common European Asylum System. The study contributes to the strategic framing of concepts in public debates and demonstrates that the left-right distinction of media outlets is hardly affected by the migration crisis.

Abstract:
There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that economic crisis is a preeminent stressor (i.e., economic stress) that may worsen working conditions and expose individuals to negative acts at work (i.e., workplace bullying). Following an occupational health perspective that considers contextual factors as risk factors for workplace bullying, this study aims to examine the mediation effects of organizational orientation to employee welfare in the economic stress-workplace bullying relationship. A cross-sectional study with the participation of 1004 Italian workers from several organizations was conducted. Our results indicate that economic stress (composed of two dimensions: fear of the economic crisis and perceived non-employability) is associated with workplace bullying through the total mediation of organizational orientation to employee welfare. These results have relevant implications for psychosocial risk assessment in turbulent times.

Abstract:
Alternative action organizations (AAO) usually rise during economic crises to offer direct support and solidarity to their constituency groups. These groups may be less involved recipient beneficiary groups or more participative groups collaborating and creating networks of support to sustain the needs of their members. This article compensates for the lack of empirical knowledge about such groups by systematically describing AAOs’ constituency groups in nine different European countries. The analysis is based on detailed data from the websites of a random sample of more than 4,000 AAOs in France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom—countries representing different welfare regimes, as well as experience of the 2008 economic crisis. Results demonstrate that there are significant intracountry variations of groups reported as major beneficiaries and participants by the AAOs, but this variation is related to the solidarity orientation of the organization rather than the country’s welfare regime or experience of economic crises. Mutual support organizations, which focus on collaborating for common interests, tend to target active constituency such as less vulnerable local communities and alternative economy consumer-producer initiatives. Distribution-oriented organizations, however, are more likely to target more vulnerable recipient beneficiary groups such as children, families, the poor, and migrants. We also show some significant country differences, as different constituency groups are represented relatively equally as targets of AAOs in Sweden, while being more “biased” toward alternative consumers and small enterprises in France. Results encourage further comparative research about constituency beneficiary and participant groups and the voluntary sector.

Abstract:
For several decades the policymakers and academics stressed out the necessity of increasing the effectiveness, efficiency, quality and availability of public services. Recent times of public austerity during the global financial crisis and economic damages caused by Covid-19 crisis even furtherly stretched the quest for an appropriate response from public managers. The entrepreneurial orientation (EO) concept, which has been already proven in the profit sector may represent a valuable solution for the public sector to cope with the lack of funding and additional costly demands. The purpose of this study was to empirically prove that the EO of the city administrations may be a way to accomplish these tasks, in an innovative, proactive and (acceptable) risk-taking manner. These three components represent the salient components of the EO construct based on Miller's (1983)/Covin & Slevin (1989) conceptualization, used in this research. A survey of mayors and public servants in city administrations in Croatia proved that a medium level of EO exists. The results of a correlation and multiple regression analysis revealed that there is a statistically significant and positive link between more entrepreneurially oriented city administrations and their self-reported performance. However, the influence of the EO on city administration performance measured objectively only partially repeated this conclusion. Furthermore, cluster analysis determined the difference between the salience of the EO dimensions among entrepreneurially 'non-oriented' and 'oriented' city administrations. This study contributes to modest research opus on EO implementation within the local public sector.

The global revival of economic nationalism and protectionism poses a serious threat to the international foreign trade policy orientation towards principles of a market economy. Popular economic nationalism such as Trumpism, Brexit or the isolation of the Eastern European Visegrád states from immigrants violates fundamental principles of the WTO. Economists agree that Brexit will hurt the UK economy significantly in the medium and long term. In addition, its political and economic effects will damage the US and transatlantic relations. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, on the other hand, continues to claim that leaving the EU will enable Britain to "take back control". In addition, the socio-economic effects of the Corona crisis on the US, UK, EU and transatlantic relations are devastating. It has far-reaching political, social and economic consequences that go well beyond public health. All partners need each other more than ever to cope with the Covid crisis. Increased transatlantic cooperation to strengthen resilience would also be necessary in closely related areas of international relations and security issues.

Abstract:
The goal of this article is to find the CEO of Iraqi companies that use strategic planning and determine if they are capable of diagnosing the traits of strategic planning systems that improve these companies' capacity to successfully address crisis-related needs. The capacity of the company to successfully react to crisis needs and demands is enhanced by the use of strategic planning, according to a review of data from 64 enterprises utilizing statistical analysis. Furthermore, top and division or unit managers must be involved and committed for strategic planning to be successful. It also has to be planned with an external orientation and get more than just lip service from top and unit or division level managers. In other words, it must concentrate on how well the business responds to the needs of its crisis and it must recognize and take advantage of any future growth crises. Additionally, a CEO must possess a variety of qualities to engage in good strategic planning. Core Competence Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities are especially important for individuals who will be in charge of carrying out the final plan since it must be compatible with the crisis-management and decision-making approaches. The study's findings suggest that managers of Iraqi businesses should think carefully about the value of strategic planning during times of crisis. also Many CEOs lack knowledge, skills, and talents since they did not complete business universities or practical training programs. Managers must attempt to incorporate crisis management into the strategic planning process for their organizations. The conclusion encourages a firm's strategy approach to include crisis management procedures. This contributes to better performance and increased crisis management efficacy. Additionally, the board of directors must rely on advice from experts who can assist them strategize and prepare throughout a crisis, which improves their capacity to handle one effectively. One way to integrate and improve managers' ability to handle crises is to encourage the use of strategic crisis planning.

PurposeTo consider what a criticalist qualitative research methodology might look like for universities in the context of the contemporary COVID-19 crisis.Design/methodology/approachThis polemical paper explores the rationale for a dramatic recasting of the approach needed in qualitative research methodology to address the challenges of the crisis-ridden times we live in. Broadly conceived of as an “evolving criticality”, to borrow from Kincheloe, the paper addresses the kind of disposition, orientation or state of mind required that provides the space and opportunities in universities within which this strategic methodological reinvention might occur. After explaining what a research methodology committed to the notion of “criticality” might look like, the paper argues that to enact this we need to start with the immediacy of our own academic work and then emanate to other public spheres.FindingsThe polemical exchange engaged in by this paper presents the underpinnings of how critical social science might be deployed in both reconceiving how we understand the purpose of research in universities and changing the nature of academic work.Research limitations/implicationsThese exist only in so far as university academics are prepared to embrace what is being argued for to change the status quo.Practical implicationsThe broader critical social science methodology being argued for in this paper is using a wider framing to a form of critical ethnography that has the potential to enable academic workers to extricate themselves from the ruinous situation brought on by the neoliberal paradigm that has been so drastically exacerbated by COVID-19.Originality/valueWhile the paper rehearses some existing ideas of critical social science, the novelty of the papers lies in the way these are applied to the COVID-19 crisis within which universities have become embroiled.

The expressive advance, especially in the political sphere, of the aforementioned tendencies, works in the dismantling of rights related to gender issues in the sphere of education, articulating the ethnic-racial and sexual orientation issues, thus characterizing the setbacks that operate intersectionally.

Abstract:
AbstractPost-truth politics poses a specific problem for critical theories. The problem is that the relativisation of facts – the claim that knowledge is merely a product of power, history, and perspective – is a core aspect of present-day ideological thinking. Critical theories have been unable to respond to this challenge, because their critique has been directed against the opposite claim, namely the naturalisation of facts. While acknowledging this problem, this article argues that post-truth discourse actually combines relativisation and naturalisation. It does not simply relativise truth, but also naturalises the belief in specific ‘facts’ – notably the belief that ‘conspiracies are behind it all’. Once we recognise the twin character of post-truth, we must reject the view of Bruno Latour and others who have made critique responsible for the crisis. Instead, it then becomes apparent that there are deep and disconcerting similarities between post-truth politics and the totalitarian and authoritarian ideologies of the twentieth century. The task of critique is to confront and counter this resurgent ideology, thereby providing direction and orientation in the struggle for emancipation.

The assertion “Our people are what set us apart from our rivals” is a common statement made by nearly every company, highlighting the significance of their people as the most valuable asset. Similarly, a corporate culture emphasizing risk awareness and learning from experiences has played a key role in shaping supply chain resilience (SCRES) amidst competitive dynamics in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Employee engagement, communication, and collaboration, as dimensions of SC risk awareness, determine the effectiveness of firms’ cultures in handling large-scale disruptions with robustness and agility. Additionally, the COVID-19 crisis has had a positive impact on firms’ learning orientation. The crucial necessity of digital supply chain (SC) transformation to enhance SCRES under pandemic conditions has further reinforced the need for dynamic adaptation and reconfiguration of firms’ culture and employee skillsets through digital upskilling.

Abstract: Due to contemporary experiences of climate crisis, large-scale migration, and global ruptures such as the spread of COVID-19, futurity has become newly problematized in both public discourse and critical discussions in literary and cultural studies. This article argues that literary texts contribute to the renegotiation of futurity for the cultural needs of the present. The article discusses how two contemporary Anglophone novels, Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West (2017) and Nnedi Okorafor’s Lagoon (2014), redirect both ecocritical and critical posthumanist concerns towards an ethics of open futurity that is, counterintuitively, contiguous with the humanist philosophies of Hannah Arendt and Emmanuel Levinas. The novels express forms of anticipation in which open futurity and the experience of encounter with the other form a basic ethical orientation, thereby pointing to an emergent reshaping of utopian practice in times of global emergency.

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to identify the effect of environmental management systems (EMSs), commitment to stakeholders and gender diversity on corporate environmental performance (CEP) and the extent to which an economic crisis moderates these relationships.Design/methodology/approachA regression analysis was conducted on a sample of 14,217 observations from 1,933 firms from 26 countries from 2002 to 2010. The estimator used is ordinary least squares with heteroscedastic panel-corrected standard errors (PCSEs), which allows us to obtain consistent results in the presence of heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation.FindingsThe results show that EMSs and stakeholder engagement are mechanisms that drive CEP but lose their effectiveness in times of crisis. However, the presence of women on boards has a positive effect on CEP that is not affected by an economic crisis.Research limitations/implicationsThe study has some limitations that could be addressed in the future. We present board gender diversity as a governance mechanism because its role is strongly related to non-financial performance. Future studies could focus on other corporate governance mechanisms, such as the presence of institutional or long-term investors. In addition, other mechanisms could be found that can counteract poor environmental performance in times of crisis. Finally, it might be useful to contrast these results with the crisis generated by the coronavirus pandemic.Practical implicationsThe results obtained have important practical implications at the corporate and institutional levels. At the corporate level, they highlight, as essential contributions, that environmental management systems and stakeholder orientation are not effective in times of economic crisis, except for with the presence of women on the board.Social implicationsFollowing the crisis, the European Commission has promoted gender diversity on boards as a mechanism to improve the governance of entities – improving, among other aspects, sustainability. In this sense, another one of the practical implications of the study is support for the policies that the European Union has implemented over the last two decades.Originality/valueThe paper analyses how a crisis affects the moral and cultural institutional mechanisms that promote CEP. Gender diversity on the board of directors not only promotes environmental performance but also appears to be a governance mechanism that ensures this performance in times of crisis when the other mechanisms lose their effectiveness. The study proposes specific policies that help maintain environmental performance in an economic crisis.

Abstract:
The article presents conceptual foundations for solving the problem of global importance that determines the sustainable development of all countries and regions without exception. The energy transition is being implemented amid the unfolding global energy crisis; economic ties and logistics routes are being broken and rebuilt; and political decisions are being taken, shaping the socio-economic and technical architecture of the world. Having summarized scientific publications and analytical reports and the results of expert surveys, the authors were able to substantiate that the energy transition is an interdisciplinary task that requires taking into account numerous factors of different nature and risks arising from the one-sided orientation of energy systems to use a particular type of energy source or type of energy production. As the main conceptual provision of the article, a thesis about the social equivalence of the final results of the energy transition is put forward: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring the reliability of energy supply and a socially acceptable level of electricity prices. New elements of the energy transition concept include the definition of transformation milestones, a diversified technical policy, and tools for advanced training of personnel to work in complex projects of energy system transformations. It has been proven that the main factor for the successful implementation of the energy transition is the presence of a technical policy, i.e., a set of measures that enable consistent decisions regarding various types of generating capacities, the development of the power grid complex, and the transformation of power-consuming systems. As part of this policy, special attention is paid to recommendations for the development of thermal and nuclear power plants, which are often ignored within long-term energy transition programs.

Abstract:
This study uses textual analysis of annual reports to evaluate the presence of stakeholder theory in times of economic crises. Although the literature on stakeholder tendency in times of crises is scarce and predominantly focused on U.S. and Austrian data, it suggests that adopting the principles of a stakeholder model may lead companies to a more successful crises management outcome. Academic contributions to German-listed companies utilizing textual analysis are limited. Hence, we start by proposing a qualitative textual approach to analyze annual reports of German-listed companies in the DAX from the period 2000 to 2020 to extract relevant information on the tendency to apply shareholder- or stakeholder-theory-related aspects in times of economic crises such as the Global Financial Crises and more recently the COVID-19 crises. We examine our gathered word extractions with a well-found methodological approach based on a comprehensive literature review and perform a logit regression to test formulated hypotheses. By analyzing word frequencies in annual reports that refer to either shareholders or stakeholders we aim to assess the importance that the management of listed companies attaches to each management approach in times of crises. Based on existing literature, we formulate the central research question of whether the word frequency of shareholder-related words in years of economic crises increases compared to years without economic crises. In line with Asel, Posch, and Speckbacher (2011), our research reconfirms that there is no tendency or conflict of both shareholder and stakeholder management in times of economic crises. In a nutshell, our empirical results indicate that there is no statistically significant increase in word frequencies of either shareholder- or stakeholder-related words in years of economic crises present. Finally, we conclude by challenging the effectiveness of either the shareholder or stakeholder orientation in economic crises-like situations and encouraging further empirical research contributions on this field, and utilizing the proposed textual analysis for other essential research questions, such as the presence of AI-related aspects amongst German-listed companies or indications about price increases in times of high inflation.

Abstract:
In the context of globalization and digitalization, the sphere of telecommunications is one of the most promising, since telecommunications enterprises supply the population with information and telecommunication services along with access to the Internet. The telecommunications sector became especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the communication system was built on the principles of digital technologies. Crisis conditions of functioning contribute to the transformation of the entire system of economic activity. First of all, it concerns the energy-dependent spheres of the economy. Therefore, the main strategic direction of development is the formation of an adaptive diversified integrative system of information and telecommunication services. The carried out study substantiates the problems and prospects for the development of the telecommunications sector in a crisis. The authors develop a system of indicators of a comprehensive rating assessment, which covers development indicators in six main areas, namely: the efficiency of internal business processes; optimization of flow management of service chains; sustainability and safety of technology and innovation; level of national integration; level of digital strategic partnership; customer loyalty. The results of the carried out rating assessment according to the proposed system of indicators indicate the integrative orientation of the development of the telecommunications sector, as well as the readiness for an adaptive transformation policy into the global network of the information and telecommunication system on the basis of the formation of diversification organizational and economic mechanisms of activity and innovative technologies.

Abstract:
This article, the second in a series on the six National Collaborating Centres for Public Health, focuses on the National Collaborating Centre for Healthy Public Policy (NCCHPP), a centre of expertise, and knowledge synthesis and sharing that supports public health actors in Canada in their efforts to develop and promote healthy public policy. The article briefly describes the NCCHPP’s mandate and programming, noting some of the resources that are particularly relevant in the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) context. It then discusses how the NCCHPP’s programming has been adapted to meet the changing needs of public health actors throughout the pandemic. These needs have been strongly tied to decisions aimed at containing the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and mitigating its immediate impacts in various societal sectors since the beginning of the crisis. Needs have also gradually emerged related to how public health is expected to help inform the development of public policies that will allow us to “build back better” societies as we recover from the pandemic. The article concludes by discussing the orientation of the NCCHPP’s future work as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis.

Abstract:
This article discusses the process of paradigm shift of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)’s national politics orientation. Considering Thomas S. Kuhn's paradigm shift concept, particularly the revolutionary stages, there was a separation of the national political transformation period in NU. A paradigm shift which opens awareness in understanding the science does only happens in established objectivity. The product of ijtihad, due to the deposition of knowledge, always has natural subjectivity with what they believe as the truth. Thus, innovative movements in finding alternative linear formulations that can always form dialogue with the times must always be carried out. Through literary work, this article illustrates that demarcation boundaries of the occurrence of NU's national political shift characterized by the pre-normal phase, normal phase, anomaly-crisis phase, and new-normal phase. Utilizing Kuhn’s perspective as tool of analysis, this study finds out that there are a few stages of paradigm shift experienced by NU. NU's struggles marked the pre-normal phase as an embryo before finally becoming an organization. The birth and development of NU marked the intermediate phase as a socio-political-religious organization on the track of the struggle. The anomaly-crisis phase occurred when NU metamorphosed into a political party, involved in interests, and strayed from its goals. The new-normal phase was marked by NU's return to Khittah in 1926, which meant returning to a social-religious-based organization. NU has returned to the struggle to fill and maintain independence through national politics in this phase.

Abstract:
The study explores how the COVID-19 outbreak prompted digital innovation in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) by providing evidence on the dimensions leveraged, the initiatives organised and the organisational results achieved. By means of an exploratory single case study based on a School of Management located in Northern Italy, the study proposes a process model to highlight how digital innovation has been fostered during the emergency. Results highlight the relevance of both technological and cultural aspects that supported the digital transformation during the crisis. The dimensions of digital readiness and cultural openness, together with a defined strategic orientation, represented relevant facilitators of the digital innovation process. In turn, digital innovation had important implications for sustainability, which was fostered by increasing the accessibility to quality education and addressed as a topic of many of the digital contents delivered. Thus, the study contributes to the stream of research that investigates how digital innovation in HEIs and other public administrations happens and how such an innovation can support sustainability. Finally, the paper provides practical implications on both technological and cultural aspects of innovation.

Abstract:
This article furthers the debate on the political implications of the Anthropocene – the most recent geological epoch marked by catastrophic environmental change – by engaging it through the lens of political theology. The article starts from the observation that discourses on the Anthropocene and related political projects are deeply influenced by a linear temporality and a common orientation towards the threat of the end of time. It distinguishes three competing discourses of the Anthropocene, eco-catastrophism, eco-modernism and planetary realism. The article analyses how these discourses invoke and update key symbols, images, and storylines of Christian political theology. Furthermore, it studies how each discourse mobilises these secularised Christian motifs to promote competing planet political projects. Each of these projects develops a different position towards the unfolding planetary crisis and the related threat of the end of time. Eco-catastrophism calls for a planetary emergency management, eco-modernism promotes ongoing experimentation with the planet, whereas planetary realism translates into what could be called a ‘realpolitik of resilience’. Revealing the Western theological roots of the Anthropocene and planet politics is essential if the emerging literature on the Anthropocene wants to live up to its promise of pluralising and decolonising IR.

Purpose This study aims to examine the actions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) at a national business context that is firmly defined by prolonged financial crisis. It does so by using a critical view on CSR disclosures in an attempt to get to the heart of the real matter of CSR, from both a thematic content and strategic orientation perspective. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on a sample of 50 firms that operate in the Greek market and belong to the most significant sectors of the national economy. Their CSR disclosures are content-analyzed, providing a body of 836 pragmatic CSR actions. Findings The key findings of the study denote differences among the examined sectors, with banks and financial services being the most active in terms of CSR actions. Regarding the thematic content, firms choose mainly to implement actions with a societal character, while in terms of strategic orientation, they opt for CSR actions that serve existing cause-related programs without any brand presence. Moreover, profound interest appears for the external business environment, whereas the number of CSR actions with employees’ participation is limited. Practical implications The study offers a descriptive account of the actual CSR engagement in Greece amid a prolonged downturn, thus shedding light on the current CSR trends and deficits and helping decision makers embed CSR as an integral part of their business operation. Originality/value During adverse economic conditions, this study captures potential discrepancies between the “walk” (doing) and the “talk” (self-reporting) of CSR. In so doing, it contributes to CSR literature by exploring both the “what” and the “how” these actions are implemented.

PurposeEntrepreneurship, in many low-resilient economies, plays a critical role in overcoming external shocks. Thus, it is crucial in such situation that entrepreneurial firms can survive and even grow so that the whole economy can benefit from a higher level of resilience. The purpose of this study is to understand how entrepreneurial orientation (EO) brings about firms' performance through the moderating role of CEOs' self-transcendence values in the context of a low-resilient sanctioned economy.Design/methodology/approachThis is a quantitative research that employs hierarchical regression analysis of a sample of 114 Iranian entrepreneurial firms composed of 62 knowledge-based and 52 creative firms.FindingsThe analysis revealed that in the low-resilient sanctioned economy, Iran, EO-performance link is moderated by the level of CEOs' self-transcendence value, that is, higher level of CEO self-transcendence leads to stronger impact of EO on performance. This moderation is not different in creative sector vs. knowledge-based sector of the economy.Originality/valueThis paper addresses a major gap in the traditional EO-performance relationship which is related to the role of CEO values. Also, the context of Iran's low level of economic resilience adds more novelty to this study, emphasizing on the role of CEO personal values of self-transcendence in times of crisis. The results could also be generalized in many economies now facing the COVID-19 pandemic crisis during which CEOs' self-transcendence values are vitally important in overcoming the difficulties of doing business in such situation.

On the Staging of Truth and the Lust for Unambiguities in Times of Crisis Based on the observation that digital media are changing the nature of the public sphere and that disinformation is a new currency, the question of responsibility and secure knowledge is being raised again and again. There is hardly time for thorough assessments. The much too hastily written judgements of the digital world distort the overall picture because often only fragmentary information is processed. The self-critical examination of one’s own claims to meaning and validity, an argumentative questioning of the self-evident and discourse orientation are decisive educational moments in a time of collapsing contexts and the subjective truth associated with it.

The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of crisis conditions in society, in particular the war and the COVID-19 pandemic, on the development of social cohesion of the university community in Ukraine using the Social Cohesion Radar research tool. The study was conducted according to the methodology proposed by the Social Cohesion Radar (Bertelsmann Foundation), which helped to interpret a set of questionnaires received in 2019-2022 in the community of the National Pedagogical Dragomanov University (NPDU), Ukraine. The findings showed that the level of cohesion varies moderately by spheres and their size. Some tend to increase and some, on the contrary, to decrease. People's acceptance of diversity increased during the pandemic and decreased in both surveys in 2022, and trust in people has a steady upward trend, but the importance of social ties decreases somewhat in crisis conditions, given its growth in non-crisis times. The sphere of communication and its volume have significantly decreased, reflecting a decrease in trust in institutions, identification with them and perception of fair treatment during the pandemic, with these dimensions characterized by uneven changes in non-war and war periods in 2022. The connection with the place of work and study also decreases. This may be due to distance learning and working during certain periods in 2020 and in the wartime period of 2022. Orientation towards the common good increases with a slight decline in the military period of 2022. It is noteworthy that civic participation increases in times of crisis. According to the above data, there is an increase in some areas, and it can be said that cohesion slightly increases depending on the area, the group studied and the crisis period. The study showed changes in social stability and communications in the university community of the National Pedagogical Dragomanov University due to the impact of crisis conditions, in particular, war or pandemic. This study provides an understanding of the values of trust and social cohesion as key drivers of social behavior in different situations of social challenges, including the challenges of the war in Ukraine and the pandemic. These results can be used to study the resilience of Ukrainian society, to find the main directions and foundations of social stability.

"In the “Letters from a Post-Corona Future” study, we asked participants to imagine a desirable world after the Corona crisis and their own place within it. In resulting narratives, any imagined that the future will not look like the past, but did they also imagine that their own moral orientation would change, that is, their stance towards what is a good human life, the norms and values deserving respect, and their moral behavior? To explore what we call “anticipated moral change”, we focused on Generation X participants (born between 1965 and 1980) since they may be sufficiently mature to have a settled moral orientation and feel concerned by the future, yet sufficiently adaptable to envision internal change. A total of 64 letters from 11 countries were examined. We used concepts from narrative ethics and futures studies to investigate whether anticipated moral change was present in the letters, and if so, in what direction. We identified six categories of anticipated moral change, from radical moral innovation to daily behavior change. We analyzed how these changes were depicted (e.g., metaphors, modals, idiomatic expressions, narrated futures), felt, justified or evaluated. Results consider the forward-looking moral self-perception of participants in terms of daily behavior, emotions, thoughts, self-advice, norms, values, ideals, images, and dreams, thus contribudting to a better understanding of prospective moral change in times of health crisis. We further conceptualized two important categories of change: the inclusion of personal change into collective moral change and renewed moral awareness. "

Abstract:
The essence of the humanistic worldview and the main stages of the evolution of the humanistic thought are analyzed. The emphasis is on the humanistic ideas of the Renaissance, as they constitute the essence of the humanistic worldview. These ideas influenced the subsequent development of philosophical thought — Modern times, Enlightenment and modernity. The authors of the article adhere to the classical approach in understanding the essence of humanism, interpreting humanism as a doctrine that arose in the Renaissance, and subsequently applied to new conditions. In modern philosophy, there has been a desire to correct some ideas of humanism taking into account the realities of modernity, but without changing the fundamental principles of humanism. The article also shows a trend taking place in modern Western philosophy, namely the emasculation of humanistic ideas. In this regard, the features and specifics of the crisis of humanism in the modern era are analyzed. The relevance of this study is due to the fact that it shows the essence and evolution of the ideas of humanism, which is important in the context of modern multidirectional anthropological discourses. The relevance is also explained by the study of the main points of the crisis of humanism taking place in modern Western philosophy. In this regard, the article provides a reasoned criticism of the anti-humanistic ideas of Western philosophers. The aim of the study is to compare the fundamental ideas of humanism and its ideological foundations with anti-humanistic and anti-anthropocentric positions widely represented in modern Western philosophy. In the course of the research, such methods as the method of historical and philosophical analysis and the comparative method were used. The novelty of the research consists in identifying a peculiar tendency of dehumanization, that is, the antihumanistic orientation of a number of concepts of Western philosophy (F. Nietzsche, M. Heidegger, M. Foucault, J. Baudrillard, J. Deleuze).

During the corona pandemic, pastoral practice and church proclamation show structural problems as well as new beginnings. The question is whether effects for a dynamic church development will emerge from them in order to find a stronger orientation of pastoral action towards the common good.
Which social players enjoy priority and which areas of society are considered "nice to have" and thus dispensable, at least in times of crisis? This question pervades public debates throughout the multiple waves of the Corona pandemic: prioritising the allocation of vaccination appointments, prioritising the opening of shops and facilities, and prioritising the allocation of aid money and Corona Relief funds. Behind these decisions is the question of who is considered systemically important in modern societies and from whom contributions to the common good are to be expected.

Data on mortality rates were obtained on sites of Federal State Statistics Service and of the Center for Demographic Research of the New Economic School, the trend analysis was carried out by a linear regression analysis using the SPSS program (IBM).Results. In the first half of the post-Soviet period (from 1991 to 2005–2009), in the Irkutsk region, in the contingent of adolescence, there was a rapid increase in the prevalence of some socially determined diseases and states (addiction, sexually transmitted diseases), as well as mortality rates. In the second half of the period (from 2006–2010 to 2020), there was a decrease in morbidity and mortality, however, with all positive shifts, even the relative well-being in these areas was not achieved. In 2019, the mortality rates of young men in connection with suicides in the region exceeded the corresponding figures of Poland 2,5 times, Sweden – 8,2 times; Mortality rates from violent causes (murders) exceeded the corresponding figures of Poland 6,4 times, Sweden – 2,0 times. High levels of socially determined morbidity, adolescence mortality in the post-Soviet period are a consequence of adverse changes in the sociocultural environment.Conclusion. Negative phenomena in the mentally-psychological and somatic health of young people are developing in a state of culture, characterized as “sociocultural destruction”. The latter is due to the processes of marginalization of the population, miscalculations in the areas of state ideology and cultural policies, the destruction and substitution of value orientations, the degradation of morality. The most important task facing the authorities and society is to overcome the factors leading to socio-cultural destruction, strengthening the integrity of the consolidating ethnic group of the cultural system.

Abstract:
The labor market in Kazakhstan, as it is changing around the world and is probably transforming beyond recognition in a year. A pandemic dictates its own rules to the labor market: many companies have begun to cut staff costs, parting even with valuable employees. In conditions of forced self-isolation during the coronavirus epidemic, for many people, the problem of employment came first. People working in quarantined sectors are left without means of subsistence and are forced to look for a place in other areas. The decline in quantitative indicators since the beginning of March is observed in almost all sectors. Previously, it was possible to work for decades by the same standards, but now approaches to work change several times a year. In conditions when many competencies quickly become obsolete, “flexible skills” come to the fore - logical and critical thinking, creativity, adaptability to changes, the ability to build relationships with people and solve complex problems. The pandemic will bring significant changes to the labor market. According to the authors, self-development and the acquisition of new skills will be the only trend in the modern labor market. In order to successfully overcome the crisis, it is necessary to provide affordable financing for business and the public. In the conditions of this kind of crisis, it is necessary to increase the responsibility and coordination of all state bodies and their orientation towards job creation and employment. To this end, it is proposed to strengthen the functions of state bodies in facilitating information support to business in times of crisis. It is also necessary to ensure the complete digitalization of public services and the provision of high-quality and relevant data on the labor market to the population.

Abstract:
The study explored the identification of problematic behaviors of learners in the classroom by teachers in Midrand in the Gauteng province of South Africa. This study was informed by Bandura’s Social Cognitive theory. The multiple case study design was chosen for this study. The participants comprised fifteen teachers (15) who teach grade four in the three public primary schools in Midrand. This study employed semi-structured interviews for data collection. Thematic analysis was adopted to analyze the qualitative data. The results of the study indicated that teachers identified the problem behaviors by observing learners in and out of class, observing disruptive behaviors, observing uncooperative learners, observing disobedience behaviors, and assessing learning difficulties. The study recommends that Life orientation teachers should teach learners to be aware of the practical skills that are required in times of crisis, when they are experiencing emotional stress, instead of acting out by displaying problem behavior.

Abstract:
The assertion by states over authority in regions critical to their perceived absolute and eternal power are often viewed as threats to sovereignty. Such claims can sometimes aim to protect cultural heritage or, at other times, transform into geopolitical obsessions. Russia's invasion of Ukraine represents both an effort to preserve its historical heritage and a manifestation of geopolitical ambition. This study therefore examines the complex interplay of nationalism and geopolitical strategies in the Ukrainian crisis. The study uses the qualitative approach for data analysis. It relies on upon, data gathered through secondary sources, and is reinforced with the argument on the new nationalism theoretical framework of analysis to explore Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The paper recognizes the strategic position of Ukraine for both Russia and the West but argued that the country was, caught between European cultural influence and Soviet legacy, which over the years has been exploited by the “West” to construct artificial nationalist barriers aimed at excluding Russia from Europe's political sphere. Ukraine's ability to navigate between two competing states' security is contingent upon its dominance over several states. The social orientation desired by Ukrainian society is the primary determinant of who will wield this authority. The state(s) that have influence over Ukraine's geopolitics can exert security pressure on the opposing state(s). Thus, Ukraine's geopolitical location serves as the focal point of Eurasian security. Consequently, a competition for survival has arisen, resulting in a debilitating impact, where Russia's intense focus on geopolitical matters is utilized and implemented through many identities. The primary objective is to establish a distinct “Western” Ukraine that is clearly separated from Russia, aligns with European nationalism, and maintains its historical dynamics. Consequently, the war has transformed into a battleground where Ukrainians demonstrate their European identity as a nation. How these events will unfold will depend on how the Ukraine government face Trumph’s proposition to end the war.

Abstract:
The relevance of the chosen topic is based on the importance of understanding how values influence individual and societal behavior, particularly in times of crisis. The shift in values in response to social crises and global transformations demands detailed analysis to understand how they adapt to new conditions and which factors have the most significant influence on this process. In this study the problem of value orientations in Ukrainian society under martial law was analyzed. The following methods were used: the method of abstraction and generalization; the method of analysis and synthesis; a systems approach; axiological approach; sociocultural analysis. Research on value orientations in Ukrainian society shows that their transformation is directly linked to social, political, and military events that have affected societal priorities and individual beliefs. Following the outbreak of the full-scale war, the values prioritized by Ukrainians have become security, protection, freedom, independence, solidarity, and patriotism. These values have come to the forefront as society faces an existential threat, prompting a reevaluation of previous orientations. In this context, national identity has gained particular importance, with Ukrainians perceiving it not only as cultural and historical heritage but also as the foundation for their fight for the right to exist. Another significant aspect is the shift away from material values. In times of war, moral categories such as honor, responsibility, humanity, helping others, volunteerism, and collective actions take precedence. The relationship between society and government has also changed, with heightened demands for transparency, honesty, and accountability from political leaders. Values provide direction for actions and serve as benchmarks for comparing reality with desired outcomes (during crises, such as war, they become guiding principles, influencing priorities and decision-making). In times of war or social instability, values related to security, stability, and protection take precedence, altering people’s priorities and behavioral strategies. Media, politics, and other social factors can significantly influence the formation and transformation of values, which is especially evident during an information war. Finally, during periods of profound social change, the breakdown of old value systems can lead to anomie (social disorganization) and polarization within society.

Abstract:
This paper explores the construction of vocational and familial futures, in times of ‘aspiring’, ‘post-welfare,’ or ‘crisis’ youth transitions, as mediated by sexual-religious identification. By considering the intersectional relations of both sexuality and religion in constructing young people's aspirations, the paper highlights pragmatic and caring orientations, including a ‘calling’ to religion as a site of present-future vocational and familial investment. I challenge the separation of religion and sexuality in youth transitions, and in notions of the ‘times we're in’ as compelling certain kinds of future-orientated aspirant (and secular) selves. Overall, the article hopes to contribute to theorising the intersection sexuality and religion in further understanding the subversive – and conservative – potential of religious-sexual values and futures. Such orientations interface with aspects of ‘getting by’ and ‘getting on’ and at once re-inscribe and stretch normative vocational and familial choices.

Abstract:
The article discusses the issue of coping behavior as a form of behavior that reflects an individual's readiness to solve life problems. What is especially relevant in times of trials from military threats in the country. This behavior is aimed at adapting to circumstances and involves the developed ability to use certain means to overcome emotional stress. When choosing active actions, the probability of eliminating the effect of stressors on a person increases. The theoretical analysis showed that coping strategies are necessary when a person gets into a crisis situation. Any crisis situation presupposes the presence of some objective circumstances and a certain attitude of a person to them, depending on the degree of their significance, which is accompanied by emotional and behavioral reactions of various nature and degree of intensity. The leading characteristics of a crisis situation are mental tension, significant experiences as a special internal work to overcome life events or traumas, a change in self-esteem and motivation, as well as a pronounced need for their correction and psychological support from the outside.
It was found that the motivational orientation of the individual determines the features of coping strategies in crisis situations. Thus, subjects with a pronounced motivation to avoid failure are more likely to use passive behavioral strategies in stressful situations - social support and avoidance, which reflects their weak efforts in solving any problem situation. And the subjects with a high level of motivation for success mainly use the strategy of finding a solution in stressful situations, aimed at solving the problem and adequately responding to the stressful situation. It was established that almost half of the researched use the strategy of finding a solution in stressful situations. That is, they have the highest level of development of adaptive coping mechanisms, tend to analyze stressful situations and find ways to solve them, have high confidence in their own resources to overcome stressful situations. The application of practical steps aimed at solving the situation significantly increases the constructiveness and effectiveness of overcoming it.
