Abstract:
The preterite-present verbs of the Germanic languages have long presented an anomaly to linguistic description. Not only has an inconstant and less than easily categorised syntactic and morphological status been attributed to the members of this group, an unlikely origin narrative is implicated in their thematic presents, which evince a striking commonality of form with the preterites of the corresponding strong verb classes. In this thesis, the matter of the processes of change behind the development of the preterite-presents is revisited. An attempt is made to ascertain whether a revised tak

This thesis is an investigation of the relation between language and thought in terms of the Saussurean concept of linguistic sign. However, it is not an empirical study of the relation between language and thought and, therefore, not a study of the Whorfian problem of linguistic relativity, but rather a study of how we understand the nature of language and thought such that we think they are related in a certain way. This thesis is an investigation of the “metaphysical” picture that underlies our understanding of the relation between language and thought. In this study, we believe that how

It reads this word in relation to the lyric poetry of Occitania and Italy, and medical literature related to lovesickness. It approaches Cavalcanti’s work in this way in order to avoid the distortion of a Dantean lens, as part of a trend since the anniverary of his death in 2000 towards considering Cavalcanti’s work on its own terms. Inspired by Raymond Williams’ Keywords, this thesis looks beyond the familiar presence of sospiro in lyric poetry, revealing a word acting as a locus of innovative expression. I

Just as the comics form is broadly defined by a peculiar tension between word and image, so identity can be conceived as a constant negotiation between abstract (“unrepresentable”) concepts that define identity and an individual’s attempts to represent that identity. Due to its formal negotiation of word and image, the comics form is thus uniquely suited to address the problems of identity and its representation. I begin this project by exami

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the function and perception of the Venetian (or Venetan) tongue from a sociolinguistic diachronic perspective.   Venetian, spoken by over 6 million people in 7 countries, in an Italian context is referred to as an Italian dialect. Though defined as language in Brazil, by the Veneto region in Italy and by several international organizations (amongst them UN and UNESCO), the Italian State does not confirm its status.   Venetian appeared as a written language in the XII century, anticipating the earliest texts in Italian itself in the Florentine form. The translation of tourist texts, in addition to the usual challenges of any translation, has to deal with the difficulty of adequately translating the advertising message. Abstract:
This dissertation examines how the new “multicultural phase” anthologies of American literature treat American history. Anthologies of American literature are more historical, more diverse, and more multidisciplinary than ever before, but they have over-extended themselves in both their historical and representational reach. Chapter One outlines a brief history of anthologies of American literature, while also introducing the terminology and method
