Abstract:

Thesis, Normandie, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018NORMR021.

Full text
Abstract:
After exhibiting his first paintings at the Salon of Paris in 1822, this disciple of Jean-Antoine Gros quickly established himself in the artistic environment as one of the main promoters of the Napoleonic legend. Raised during the full glory and effervescence of the First Empire, he belonged to a generation of artists who, the day after Waterloo, transposed into their work a whole palette of melancholy and nostalgia towards that past glow they half-caught a glimpse of, half-fantasized about. Bellangé's success, which was strongly correlated to a context that was supportive to the spread of Napoleonic legend, gives an interesting insight into the evolution of public opinion on the one hand, and political attitudes on the other, towards the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte. His works are also characterized by the application he puts into the evocation and description of everyday life. His moving to Rouen gave him the opportunity to create a renewed iconography of the Norman countryside. Simultaneously a public figure and a multifaceted artist, his career has also been marked by his position as curator of the Musée des Beaux-arts of Rouen. This multidisciplinary background definitely offers a remarkable field of study and a valuable documentation on the careers and the status of artists in the mid-nineteenth century. The analysis of the life and work of Hippolyte Bellangé, reviewed in their political context, finally gives us the opportunity to question the notions of committed art, popular art and patriotic art in the years following the First Empire

Abstract:
博士<br>國立陽明大學<br>牙醫學系<br>106<br>Background: Glutamine has a very important role in the human body, including pH balance in an acidic environment, as well as supporting the TCA cycle in cancer cell growth. One from two of the isoforms in catabolism of glutamine is initiated by the kidney type glutaminase (GLS1). This GLS1 modulate cellular acidity by catalytic activities where produces ammonia and showed TG-2 is up-regulated, helps protect cells from acid-induced cell death and decrease cellular pH. However, the expression of transglutaminase-2 (TG-2) in oral cancer growth related to renal function is unknown. Here we examined TG-2 and its expression as a prognostic tool. Methods: Fifty-six oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissues were collected with the inclusion of tumor in any region of oral area, and patients with creatinine (Cr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) results. The tissues were stained using immunohistochemistry (IHC) with a TG-2 antibody [N3C3], then observed under the microscope. The TG-2 expressions were calculated using Adobe Photoshop CS software and statistical analyses using SPSS ver. 21. Results: We found that TG-2 expression showed a significant difference in the expression levels between tumor and the adjacent groups without disease-free survival, disease-specific survival, and recurrence with p<0.05. The average staining intensity with 25th percentile of TG-2 becomes a vital score for the diagnosis in OSCC. Furthermore, our study demonstrated a good prognosis outcome if the intensity score showed a higher difference in TG-2 expression between the adjacent and tumor tissue. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the only clinical study on TG-2 expression in OSCC and patient with good renal function, and it demonstrates that TG-2 can serve as a predictor of tumorigenesis and prognosis outcome.

Abstract:
Traditionally considered to be related to each other, they indicate the processes according to which a linguistic unit derive its interpretation from, respectively, something that was mentioned earlier and the situational context. But there is no agreement as regards the definition of such terms as they describe linguistic strategies at different levels: morpho-syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Since the beginning of modern linguistics in the middle of 19th century the study of anaphora and deixis is strongly related, following the traditional part-of-speech system, to the classes of pronouns and articles and, according to more recent studies, of determiners. But what are their origins from a metalinguistic point of view? In what stages of Western linguistic thought were they created? In which contexts have they been used? The answer must to be sought into the Ancient Greek language and linguistic thought, starting with the philosophical perspective on language introduced by Plato. The present dissertation has investigated the domain of use of anaphora and deixis in ancient texts, especially Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics and the grammarians, i.e. Apollonius Dyscolus, the text of Tékhne Grammatiké by Pseudo-Dionysius Thrax and the scholia to the Tékhne. Such analysis highlighted that Apollonius was the first who intentionally used anaphora and deixis in a theoretical opposition. In particular in the two treatises on pronouns and on syntax he developed a systematic theory of anaphora and deixis based on the common semantic feature of definiteness and different syntactic constraints (e.g. NP constraints like the impossibility for a deictic pronoun – but not for an anaphoric one – to be determined by an article). Apollonius’s work greatly influenced not only the later Greek grammarians, but also the Latin grammatical tradition: thanks to Priscian’s Institutiones the Greek dichotomy of anaphora and deixis was re-interpreted in the light of the Latin language and explained by the new terms of relatio and demonstratio, producing a complex metalanguage which will be transmitted to modern times throughout the centuries.

Full text
Abstract:
Dairy is one of the most produced and valuable agricultural products in the world. China is a key importer of dairy products. This thesis aims to explore the country-of-origin effects in the Chinese dairy market after the food safety scandal in 2008. Despite the fact that previous marketing studies have discussed the different driving factors for country-of-origin effects and their impact on brand equity of various products in various markets, the research on country-of-origin effects in the Chinese dairy market is still absent. In order to fill the research gap, the current study focuses on the following two aspects: 1. What drives the country-of-origin effects in the Chinese dairy market? 2. How can the country-of-origin effects impact on brand equity in the Chinese dairy market? Both qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative (online questionnaire survey) techniques were employed as the methodological approaches in this research. Regression analysis, Hayes’ PROCESS analysis and structural equation modelling were used for examining the theoretical models and hypotheses testing. The key findings of this thesis were: 1. The driving factors for country-of-origin effects in the Chinese dairy market included: country image, product involvement, risk avoidance, product experiences and face consciousness. 2. Consumer ethnocentrism and consumer animosity can also drive the country-of-origin effects in the Chinese dairy market under the moderating effects of purchase frequency. 3. Country-of-origin effects have an indirect impact on brand equity. This impact is mediated by brand loyalty and brand awareness. This study develops a more comprehensive theoretical framework with the integration of various constructs, which includes the driving factors and impacts of the country-of-origin effects. This new theoretical framework is supported by empirical evidence. The research findings contribute to the marketing literature on country-of-origin effects, and provide marketing practitioners with practical business strategies to improve their marketing performance in the Chinese dairy market.

AbstractI have been asked to submit a revised version of this chapter, published almost a decade ago. However, I think that it is better to leave the historical record as it was—this was an article written in its time and for its time. If I was writing this article today, I would call it “The Future of Particle Physics—Beyond the LHC”, in recognition of the fact that, when originally written, the LHC was still under construction and now it has been operating for several years. The other key event which informed the original article was the recently-developed European Strategy for Particle Physics, adopted by the CERN Council in July 2006; the strategy was updated in 2013 and formally adopted in May of that year [1]; as I write, the process of updating the strategy is under way.

ZusammenfassungThis article examines the German translations of the English visionary Jane Leade (1623–1704). The co-founder of the London „Philadelphian Society“ published numerous religious writings from 1681 onwards, which were translated into German by Loth Fischer starting in the mid-1690s. Fischer’s translations are characterised by a high degree of faithfulness to the original. He also supplemented the German editions with additional paratexts to support their reception. The importance of fidelity to the original can be gauged from the traces of reading found in a Viennese copy of „Die Nun brechende und sich zertheilende Himmlische Wolcke“ (1694). In addition, the article asks what influence visions have on central concepts of literary studies such as that of the author or mediality.

Teaching is the constant process in our life. It makes our parents, teachers/pedagogues at school or in the universities, mentors, experts, coaches, well-known academic, preachers and so on. The additional such factor maybe (and do indeed) Internat. Moreover, the common link among people is essentially exchanged as well. Many persons prefer have short conversation using SMS-communications, and it isn’t face-to-face unfortunately. In any transport (metro, bus, trolleybus) a man seeks interesting or useful information but has not noticed persons’ associates. It’s not good. We can see the next negative situation at home in a family. For example: let’s suppose that one student arrived home. Members of his family ask him about his routine business. And they usually here that everything is OK. Even during his eating, he tries to read the information which he sees in his mobile telephone or in the planetable. Besides, he sends different short communications and gives answers. There are not any friendly dialogs with his family (father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, brother or sister). That’s why in this article you can understand the new way how to exchange such negative situation in full.

Maia, Pedro, and Raul Pinto. "Original-Copy: ideation for a lampshade inspired by nature." In 14th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE 2023). AHFE International, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54941/ahfe1003545.

Abstract:
The following article looks at nature as a cultural pre-set narrative (or set of narratives) and reflects on how it can influence the design process to achieve a concrete result - a product. It describes an ongoing process that intersects intangible (behaviours) and tangible (matter) expressions of nature with the concept of Original-Copy, as the conceptual framework to develop and materialize a lampshade. The inclusion of behaviour patterns presents poetic and imaginative properties to trigger the conceptual phase of a project, while biomatter was chosen to physically materialize the ideas. In this context, the Original-Copy concept works as the archetype on which a new product can be based. The aforementioned approach has been applied and developed through a workshop, which intends to join the three concepts referred to above: behaviours, matter and original-copy.Firstly, a taxonomy of animals´ seduction rituals and courtship behaviours has been developed, which includes various criteria of classification, such as duration, triggers, interaction, or intensity. This taxonomy works as the catalyst of the workshop, to promote imagination and disruption in the design process. In this challenge, the shape of the object is predetermined by an original form (an archetype), in this case, the renowned Constanza lampshade, produced by the Italian brand Luceplan. The poetic dimension is induced by the attempt of translating the patterns of animal mating rituals described in the taxonomy into the characteristics of the biomaterial. The final objective was for the participants to express themselves through the physical dimension (texture, opacity, smell, touch, taste, bias) of created materials, inspired by animal behaviours, and use it to create the reinterpretation of the pre-existing form of the Constanza lampshade. After explaining the workshop methodology, the article presents the main ideas generated. Selected behaviours and the way of their application, composition of the created biomaterials used to materialize the ideas, as well as the final outcomes are described. An important part of the article is the report on the failed attempts of creating the materials and constructing the lampshades, their causes and the impact on the whole process. In the future, further evaluation and development of the proposed approach are anticipated, through the described workshops in different social and geographic contexts. It is awaited the possible creation of collections of other design classics lampshades, based on distinct triggers, for example on endogenous resources, emphasizing different ways how nature can influence design.

Abstract:
News articles are important for providing timely, historic information. However, the Internet is replete with text that may contain irrelevant or unhelpful information, therefore means of processing it and distilling content is important and useful to human readers as well as information extracting tools. Some common questions we may want to answer are “what is this article about?” and “who wrote it?”. In this work we compare machine learning models for evaluating two common NLP tasks, topic and authorship attribution, on the 2017 Vox Media dataset. Additionally, we use the models to classify on a subsection, about ~20%, of the original text which show to be better for classification than the provided blurbs. Because of the large number of topics, we take into account topic overlap and address it via top-n accuracy and hierarchical groupings of topics. We also consider edge cases in authorship by classifying on inter-topic and intra-topic author distributions. Our results show that both topics and authors readily identifiable consistently perform best when using neural networks rather than support vector, random forests, or naive Bayes classifiers, although the latter methods perform acceptably.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is a linguistic analysis of sound images in the context of original and translated poems by Boris Pasternak. The authors focus on the author’s individual features of perceptual imagery representation. This imagery is the basis for poetry transformations found in Pasternak’s Russian translations of poems by John Keats. Sound images in the translated poems have the same semantic and ‘poetic’ characteristics as in the original works by Pasternak.

In this article the discourse of J. Fowles, being an extroverted figure of communication, is analyzed from a linguoculturological point of view. The culturological component of allusions correlates with deep archetypal ideas about God. A cultural space, which has the nucleus, that is a cognitive base, is structured by means of horizontal and vertical layers.

Abstract:
The article deals with the problem of comparing the lexical diversity ratio of the original and the translation of a literary text. The relevance of the work is due to the growing interest of researchers in the possibilities of applied methods of computational linguistics to the study of the quantitative component of text corpora and the study of certain linguistic phenomena of originals and their translations. The lexical diversity ratio of the original literary text and its translation can give an idea of the effectiveness of translation in terms of reflecting the complexity and richness of the original language. The research material was the short stories by the American writer W. G. Simms and the translations made by M. L. Pavlycheva. It turned out that the lexical diversity ratio is influenced by both the volume of the studied text corpora and the grammatical structures of the language

Mats, Mats, and Karin Zetterqvist Nelson. Listening to children: theories and ethics of listening. Linköping University Electronic Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.3384/report-204274.

Full text
Abstract:
In many societal contexts, the importance of listening to children is underscored, not seldom with reference to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and especially Article 12 on the right to be heard. But what does it mean to listen to children? A plethora of books on listening to children aimed at professionals and others who meet children in their daily lives are published on a regular basis. However, we miss a critical discussion of listening as such, and more specifically about (good) listening to children, framed within a larger theoretical context. The aim of this article is to discuss listening in relation to monological and dialogical perspectives on communication, as well as in relation to different notions of children as similar to or different from adults. Also discussed is how different theoretical perspectives on listening and listening to children tends to lead to different ethical conclusions regarded what constitutes good listening and listening to children. Abstract:
This article explores the rationale behind a performance given by the authors at the Unfolding the Process symposium held in Oslo in November 2015. For this occasion, the authors devised a new version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations that builds upon Emmerson’s arrangement of the work for two pianos in 2012. A shortened version of the work (c.30 minutes) was designed that aimed nonetheless to maintain the original work’s sense of structural balance and coherence. This version involved the transposition of a number of variations into different keys to explore the possibility of adding a satisfying tonal structure to our experience of the work, in a context where both performers see potential communicative value in 'playing with' dimensions of original masterworks with a view to giving fresh perspective to the listener experience. The article is written from the alternating perspectives of the authors; one of which is primarily concerned with the rationale and process of devising the arrangement while the other reflects upon the performative aspects and implications arising from it.

Abstract:
This article explores in depth the role of indigenous and foreign innovation efforts in technological change and catching up in emerging economies. It also looks at the interaction between indigenous and foreign innovation. The article presents original evidence and argues that, despite the potential offered by globalisation and a liberal trade regime, the benefits of international technology diffusion can only be delivered with parallel indigenous innovation efforts and the presence of modern institutional and governance structures and conducive innovation systems. This conclusion is compounded by the expected inappropriateness of Northern technology for countries in the developing South, which calls for greater efforts to develop indigenous innovation. In this sense, indigenous and foreign innovation efforts are complementary.

Abstract:
This article examines the specifics of the translation of irony in Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with The Wind”. The relevance of the article lies in the problems of translating an artistic technique from English into Russian. The purpose of the article is to identify the definition of the term “irony” and ways to translate it based on the works of scientists. The research methodology consists of analyzing the techniques of translating quotations from the original text of the novel and its translation. As a result of the study, the most effective translation techniques were identified, such as: complete translation with minor lexical or grammatical transformations; antonymic translation; addition of semantic components; cultural and situational substitution. The specifics of the translation of irony in the text using transformation techniques were also determined, due to the special role of this literary technique in the context of the novel. The theoretical basis of this article is the classification of translation techniques by T. A. Kazakova. The conclusions of the study show which are the most effective translation techniques used in translating the artistic technique “irony” from English into Russian.

Briman, Shimon. The Wars, Demons, and Ambitions of Babyn Yar. Edited by Nicolas Darius Dreyer. Otto-Friedrich-Universität, 2025. https://doi.org/10.20378/irb-105451.

Abstract:
For many years and decades, the need for a memorial center at the Babyn Yar ravine in Kyiv has been discussed. On September 29-30, 1941, Nazi German Sonderkommando forces and local collaborators had murdered 33,771 Jews in the ravine. In 2016, the Ukrainian government announced together with an International Supervisory Board its intention to create an official Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center (BYHMC) on the grounds of the massacre. Since then, the political and historiographical mandate, the building, the historical narrative and the artistic concept to be developed, as well as the future Center's scholarly and artistic staff have been hotly disputed. Russia's aggression against Ukraine since 2014 and even more so Russia's war against Ukraine in February 2022, which included repeated air strikes on Ukraine's capital, made the further development and operation of the BYHMC difficult and partly impossible, last but not least for all practical purposes. The Center was officially founded and began its operations at the eightieth anniversary of the Babyn Yar massacre in September 2021. However, the memorial complex itself still had to be built. The present translation of an article by Shimon Briman analyzes a particular debate that surrounded the development plans for the memorial project in Kyiv at that time. The author sheds light on how the initially envisaged financial involvement of Russian businessmen in the project, whose relatives include Ukrainian-Jewish Holocaust victims, caused the ongoing debate to become much more complex and heated against the backdrop of Russia's intention and actions to destroy Ukraine as an independent state. The original Russian-language article was first published in 2020 as "Voyny, demony i ambitsii Babyego yara" in the Russian Jewish magazine "Evreyskiy zhurnal" (Jewish Magazine) 6/5782 (15 May 2020), pp. 20-29, online accessible at: https://jewishmagazine.ru/articles/community/voyny-demony- i-ambitsii-babego-yara/ (last accessed 15 December 2024). Shimon Briman is a Ukrainian-Israeli historian and journalist. He currently serves as head of the East European Desk at the University of Haifa, Israel. The article was translated in 2020 and edited in 2024 by Nicolas Dreyer, Institute of Slavic Studies, Otto Friedrich University, Bamberg, Germany. A retrospective reading in 2024 necessitated an adaptation of the tenses employed in the original essay.
