The neighbourhood concept is arguably one of the major planning landmarks that shaped the urban form of the twentieth-century city in many countries. Coincidently, both the neighbourhood idea of Clarence Stein and Henry Wright, exemplified in their plan for Radburn, and the neighbourhood unit idea of Clarence Perry were published in 1929. The urban design principles of Stein and Wright included the idea of a superblock of residential units grouped around a central green, the separation of vehicles and pedestrians, and a road hierarchy with culs-de-sac for local access roads. Many popular pedagogical approaches instruct children to construct their ideas into tangible and physical products. With the prospect of implementation, do children decide to go for the most creative ideas or do they shift towards ideas that are perhaps less creative but easier to construct? We conducted a field experiment to test whether expected construction affects children’s creative idea selection. In this experiment, 403 children were asked to select the most original ideas to make a toy elephant more fun to play with. We randomly assigned them to a treatment condition—in which they were

Artistic forms seem to be closely related to magical thinking, because of their use of symbols and representations, the creation of talismanic objects and the articulation of ritual practices. This link has fluctuated throughout history. There were periods in which they were intricately related, whereas in other times the threads almost released themselves. However, it seems that they never managed to separate completely. That is because of the link, present since the origins of art. For Scheler, it was a matter of retracing a horizon of meaning that, drawing upon that aknowledged source of the ontological dynamism that is love, can reintegrate work into the overall becoming of being, freeing it from the ec

The idea is to use type checking to automatically prove safety (protocol compliance) and liveness (communication deadlock freedom) of implementations relative to specifications. Abstract:

Abstract:
There has been extensive research and investment in strategies that aim to improve the quality of education around the world. But despite rigorous evidence, the question of what to do in a specific context usually remains only partially answered at best. As a result, numerous impact evaluations are being conducted with the goal of learning what works. The goal of the guidelines presented here is to summarize the evidence and provide references in a single document in order to save time for those implementing education impact evaluations through randomized control trials. In August 2021, the IMF made a new SDR allocation to help ease pandemic-induced financial strains in the Global South. This paper assesses the potential of the SDR system to address debtrelated problems in global finance. We analyze the SDR system as a web of interlocking balance sheets whose members can use SDR holdings—the system’s tradable assets—for conversion into usable currency as a perpetual low-interest loan or to make payments to each other. Using original IMF data, we study how the system has been practically used since 1990. Though widely perceived as a solution in search of a prob

Orifice meter expansion factor data collected at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) between 2003 and 2005 have been reviewed to assess the effect of an assumption made during data reduction. In accordance with the North American orifice meter standard, AGA Report No. 3, Part 1, the data were originally analyzed using a constant value of the isentropic exponent, k = 1.3. By comparison, the expansion factor equation adopted by ISO employs the real isentropic exponent, K, which is a function of pressure, temperature, and gas composition. The SwRI orifice meter expansion factor data have been re-

Abstract:
This report focuses more on benefits of migration to the country of origin in relation to human capital, skills and knowledge transfer, and the transmission of ideas, norms and practices. While relying on studies from around the world in varying sectors, the report draws in large part on research on Africa and highlights specific research from the health sector. While there are various case studies on potential benefits that can be gained from diaspora contributions and return migration, there is a lack of systematic evidence, which is noted in the literature. There is also limited empirical e
