Abstract:
Introduction: First impression on potential readers is created by the title; therefore, authors should give importance to the title structure. The aim of this study was to establish whether articles created by a smaller number of authors and with shorter, descriptive or declarative titles gain more citations and whether article title length and number of authors correlate to the number of citations. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study on article citation data for 30 scientific journals published in 2016 in Medical Laboratory Technology field according to Web of Science database was conducted. The type of article, type of title, as well as number of words in the title and number of authors was recorded. Results: In the group of original articles (N = 2623), articles with declarative titles (N = 336, 13%) showed statistically higher number of citations in multiple comparison analysis when compared to descriptive titles (P < 0.001). No correlation was found between number of citations and title word count (r = 0.07, P < 0.001) nor between number of citations and number of authors in group of original articles (r = 0.09, P < 0.001). Original articles with descriptive titles longer than 15 words or with more than six authors are cited more (P = 0.005 and P < 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Based on results of our study, titles do matter. Therefore, authors of original articles might want to consider including their findings in the title and having longer titles.

Abstract:
Abstract Scholarly studies on the notion of retranslation have focused majorly on the body of texts and not specifically on titles. The issue of retranslation of titles considered in this study assesses the indirect translation of the title of Chinua Achebe’s novel into Yoruba through German. In view of this, the notion of individualism extending from the European literary culture into the African literature through translation is criticized. Based on the intersemiotic approach adopted by the Yoruba translator on the title page and the German translation of the title of the original source text, the study concludes by proposing a two-way approach to the interpretation of the title Things Fall Apart.

Like most librarians, I spend a large part of my time organizing information and helping others to find it, but as an artist, I sometimes find an image more interesting to appropriate than to classify. The word “appropriation” as applied to art has in some ways supplanted the concept of the found object. Appropriation refers to the use of images (taken from many sources, including art history) that have been not only removed from their original context, but re-combined with other images to form a new context, a new work of art.

Abstract:
When we are looking at the books displayed in the window of a bookshop, what first catches the eye is the title. Titles pave the way to the text, even in a literal sense. In any case, they establish a first contact with a potential readership, informing them, for example, about the genre (novel, non-fiction, children’s book) or the content of the book, praising its qualities, and, if all this raises the readers’ interest, appealing to them to buy and later read the book, or even guiding their interpretation of the text. This shows how important it is that a title is apt to fulfil all these functions - an original title in its own culture, a translated title in the target culture. It is a well-known fact that translators do not normally have the last word in the process of deciding on the title of a book they have translated. Nevertheless, if they can offer good arguments for or against certain title formulations, they might at least be heard. At any rate, just pleading for a “faithful” translation of the original title will not do. There may be a lot of arguments - and not only linguistic ones - against a literal translation, with which translators have to be familiar. The following study is based on a corpus including titles of fictional, nonfictional and children’s books in English, German, French and Spanish. After justifying the classification as titles as texts, and even a genre with its own culture-specific conventions, it aims at showing the forms and functions of book titles in order to provide a sound foundation for their translation, discussing some of the problems derived from this functional perspective.

Abstract:
The sale of property by a non-owner is an important question in many legal systems. The problem is more acute in the case of movables, since with immovable property the existence of a register of title allows the buyer to check with relative ease whether the seller is in fact the owner. There is usually no register of title to movable property, and the buyer will usually identify the holder of goods who is offering them for sale as their owner. There are three parties involved in the problem: A — the real or original owner, B — the seller, and C — the buyer. B may be a thief, a finder or A's bailee, or he may have obtained the property from A by misrepresentation, and so forth. In many cases it is impossible to obtain satisfaction from B, either because he cannot be traced or because he is insolvent, and the question of who owns the property, A or C, then assumes vital importance.

High fidelity calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite (bio) inorganic replicas of the fibrous network of the dried fruit of Luffa cylindrica are described, utilizing a facile synthetic route. The loofa sponge is a highly complex macroscopic architectural template, an inexpensive and sustainable resource. In the context of the morphosynthesis, the capability of replication of the loofa sponge opens the possibility of the use of biodiversity in obtaining new materials. We would like to emphasize that the template proposed in this paper, makes possible the preparation of inorganic replicas with a very desirable size, on the centimeter scale. This fact is innovative with respect to inorganic replicas described in the literature, which predominate at the micrometric scale, limited to the original size of the template.

Abstract:
This dissertation is about the first ever federal bilingual education policy. The research for the project comes from three major resources; lay and professional literature, archival documents, and structured personal interviews with over forty analysts and architects of the policy. The presentation of the dissertation follows a case study format. The purpose of the dissertation was to review the historical and immediate precedents that gave rise to the policy, narrate the story of how and why the policy was passed, and tell what those who supported and crafted the policy intended to promulgate. Although called a Bilingual Education Act, the major conclusion drawn from this research points in another direction. The concerns and problems that spawned Title VII of 1968 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) had less to do with language or bilingual education and more to do with providing support for experimental programs designed to increase school completion by Latino students in the Southwest. This dissertation examines policymaking through several prisms, some specific to language planning analysis. The touchstone for this analysis is Ruiz' Language Planning Orientations (1984a). The conclusions drawn in this dissertation with regard to the original Title VII and to subsequent government policies and school practices is that both emanate from a Language-as-Problem orientation. The recommendations are that bilingual education programs and practices follow a Language-as-Resource orientation. In this way, children can develop and enrich both of the languages they learn in school and the result will be balanced bilingual proficiencies in language use and literacy.

Wallace, Charles Allen. ""Dread of Elder Titles": John Haywood and the Occult Origins of the Confederacy." W&M ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1477068097.

Full text
Abstract:
This work unearths the dark work of John Haywood (1762–1826), an overlooked Tennessee historian and judge who provided foundational historical and legal arguments for the Confederate nation. Published in 1819, his apocalyptic Southern history, The Christian Advocate, simultaneously justified Indian Removal and simplified white Southerners’ claims of title to land. He thus became the first thinker to give Southerners a sense of place in the deep history of the South; the first to convince them they belonged where they lived. andrew Jackson, for example, memorized passages from the Christian Advocate to convince himself: Southern Indians are the armies of Gog and Magog mentioned in the Book of Revelation; their ancestors massacred the mysterious, slaveholding mound-builders who inhabited the South prior to European contact; and they are waiting on the frontier to annihilate emerging Christian plantations in the young states of Mississippi and Alabama. While writing The Christian Advocate, Haywood used his position on the Tennessee Supreme Court to weave its logic into the property laws that became models for those of Mississippi and Alabama. His rulings assured planters that they should not “dread” violating “elder titles” in their sleep, or fear having some future judge determine they did not have a right to their land. By removing demonic Indian murderers, planters were restoring civilization to the Devil’s wilderness, an act that would bring about a New Jerusalem. By 1861, Haywood had given historians such as William Gilmore Simms and politicians such as Alexander Stephens something vital: historical arguments justifying the Confederate nation and its slaveholding theocracy. In overlooking Haywood and his influence, historians have missed a bizarre (to us) but nonetheless crucial link between historiography and the emergence of the Confederacy.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references. The origins of the Torrens System of land registration are not clear. Examines the claim of Dr. Ulrich Hübbe who asserted that he collaborated with Torrens to bring about the adoption of the land law of his hometown Hamburg in the form of the Real Property Act 1858 (SA). An historical examination (collecting and analysing all relevant historical sources), shows that it is likely that Hübbe was the actual draftsman, while a comparative legal analysis (contrasting Hamburg's land law at the beginning of the 19th century with the first bill of the Act) demonstrates that there is a strong similarity between Hamburg's land registration system and the original Torrens System; and, that the outstanding differences between the systems can be explained by the natural adaptation processes which are implied by the adoption of laws.

Rouquette, Maïeul. "Étude comparée sur la construction des origines apostoliques des Églises de Crète et de Chypre à travers les figures de Tite et de Barnabé." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017AIXM0103.

Abstract:
The foundation of a local Church by an apostle is a major component in inter-ecclesial relationships. However, such foundation could be an object of dispute, especially if the apostolic status of the founder is not obvious in the New Testament. That is why a Church could be brought to build an apostolic past, notably by the production of apostle' lives, which can emphasize both the apostolic status of the figure and its founding feature of the church. The aim of this study is to compare how the Churches of Crete and Cyprus build their apostolic past through the figures of Titus and Barnabas. This work also analyzes the ecclesial and politic stakes of theses constructs and their reception by the Churches outside Crete and Cyprus. After presenting the New Testament datas about Titus and Barnabas, this thesis studies the reception of these figures in the Christianity in the first five centuries. Then it analyzes the relationship between these figures and the Churches of Crete and Cyprus. To do it, it interests first to the writings composed about them from the 5th century, then to the Cretan and Cypriot texts which mention them in an indirect way. Then, it intends to study the devotional practices toward these figures and their identity uses, especially during the periods of Frankish and Venetian rule. Finally, this work examines the reception of Cretan and Cypriot traditions regarding Titus and Barnabas outside their respective island, in the hagiographical and not hagiographical literature of the Byzantine Empire and of the Coptic, Syriac and Armenisch worlds

Fuxing, Liang, and 梁復興. "The Research of the Original Title and Author of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu”." Thesis, 2008. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/c9b2uh.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>華梵大學<br>東方人文思想研究所<br>97<br>“Shi Shuo Xin Yu” represents Zhi Ren Xiao Shuo in the period of the Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties. There are three sections and thirty-six chapters in this book. The period of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” is from the end of Dong Han dynasty to Dong Jin. There are about one thousand and five hundred people in the book. It mainly describes people’s commendable words and deeds, and life style. It also reflects intellectual thoughts, feelings, and lives of nobles of the period of time. This book can help people understand the history, politics and society of the period. There are many titles of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” because it was published a long time ago. It’s hard to identify which title was the original title. The common titles are “Shi Shuo Xin Shu,” “Shi Shuo” and “Shi Shuo Xin Yu.” Huang Changrui and Yu Jiaxi believed “Shi Shuo Xin Shu” was the original title. Wang Nengxian thought “Xin Yu” was not the latest title as everyone said, so “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” could still be the original title. However, Yang Yong and Fan Ziye thought “Shi Shuo” was the original title. This dissertation tries to find out which one is the original title based on scholars’ research. History suggests that the writer of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” is Liu Yiqing who lived in the Southern Dynasty Song. But when Lu Xun doubted that Liu Yiqing wrote “Shi Shuo Xin Yu”, the saying that the book was written by many writers is accepted by lots of people. Scholars who support the belief researched the theme from three aspects: the writing ability of Liu Yiqing, the intellectuals that Liu Yiqing hired, and the compilation of“Shi Shuo Xin Yu.” The intellectuals that Liu Yiqing hired were Yuan Shu, He Changyu, Lu Zhan, and Bao Zhao. It’s worth researching to know whether the four people participated in the writing of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” by studying their biographies and articles. Scholars thought “Shi Shuo” was written by many people because of the following reasons: some articles were repeated in the book, there are different titles given to the same person, improper categorization of the book. This dissertation tries to identify the writer of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” by researching these aspects.

Abstract:
碩士<br>佛光大學<br>傳播學系<br>96<br>The purpose of this study is to examine the similarities and differences in advertising appeals and culture values conveyed in original and translated Hollywood movie titles between the U.S. and Taiwan. Hypotheses are drawn in relation to Hofstede’s Five Dimensions and Contextuality. Pollay’s advertising appeals are used and a quantitative content analysis is employed to distinguish a sample of 656 movies titles in two languages, namely English and Chinese. The findings support seven of the 12 hypotheses, indicating that consumers of the two countries are exposed to distinct styles of advertising appeals based on different cultural values, with the Eastern cultural values remaining stable in Taiwan. Several additional findings are also provided. First, because of the nature of Hollywood movies, the Taiwanese translated titles reflect Western cultural values. Second, aside from culture values, another dominant influence on the presentation of movie titles is genre, particularly in Taiwan. Third, subtle changes in cultural values are visible from advertising strategies. Finally, globalization and localization should be taken into consideration at the same time in order to carry out international advertising strategies with remarkable success.

Abstract:
We introduce the value iteration network (VIN): a fully differentiable neural network with a `planning module' embedded within. VINs can learn to plan, and are suitable for predicting outcomes that involve planning-based reasoning, such as policies for reinforcement learning. Key to our approach is a novel differentiable approximation of the value-iteration algorithm, which can be represented as a convolutional neural network, and trained end-to-end using standard backpropagation. We evaluate VIN based policies on discrete and continuous path-planning domains, and on a natural-language based search task. We show that by learning an explicit planning computation, VIN policies generalize better to new, unseen domains. This paper is a significantly abridged and IJCAI audience targeted version of the original NIPS 2016 paper with the same title, available here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.02867

Argirakis, Anthony S. "Remote Control Jackleg Drills Reduce Operators’ Overall Noise Exposures." In ASME 2009 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2009-12833.

Abstract:
Jackleg drills have proven to be a problem when it comes to overexposures to noise for coal miners as well as metal/nonmetal miners. These pneumatic drills are used to drill holes for roof bolting or blast holes in developmental and stoper mining. They are used when mining vertically or steeply inclined deposits. The “Leg” is a heavy metal support which allows the driller to keep the rig steady when collaring the hole as well as keeping it steady while drilling into the hard rock. Since drilling is done basically by hand, the operator remains in close proximity to the noise associated with the pneumatic hammer. Up until now, little has been done with the exception of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and retrofit mufflers to achieve compliance with the noise standards stated in Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 30, part 62 for the drills of the type. Just recently an anthracite coal mining company, having noise problems associated with their jackleg drills, purchased a “Remote In-Stope Drill Rig” from a manufacturer in South Africa. A noise study was conducted by the Mine Safety &amp; Health Administration (MSHA) and the cooperative mining company to determine the effectiveness of the remote control jackleg drill in reducing the operator’s overall noise exposure. The baseline test was conducted on the original jackleg drill. Once the new remote unit was received, it was tested as received from the manufacturer with their hammer and again with the company’s original hammer retrofitted to the drill rig. The company also made modifications to the 8 ft. hose extending it to 20 ft. to allow operation further from the noise source. The study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the remote control unit in reducing not only the sound level, but also the overall noise dose. The unit was found to not only reduce the operator’s overall noise exposure when used with either hammer, but allowed drilling to be conducted from a location under permanently supported roof with no vibration on the operator’s hands.

Mu, Xiangming. "Decoupling the Information Application from the Information Creation: Video as Learning Objects in Three-Tier Architecture." In InSITE 2005: Informing Science + IT Education Conference. Informing Science Institute, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/2899.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper a new three-tier video application infrastructure is proposed. Video learning object is introduced as the intermedia tier and it connects the video metadata and video application tier. In addition to the traditional text metadata such as title and description, a wide range of visual metadata including key frames, video storyboards, and fast-forward video are integrated into the video learning object. The visual metadata is organized in hierarchical structure. Video timestamps are used to “mark” different video channels (i.e., visual channel, audio channel, text channel) for the purpose of synchronization. A MPEG-7 compatible XML metadata schema was developed to encode the video learning objects to achieve the reusability and interoperability—different video applications can use the same video learning object without having to reinvent the wheel. A semi-automatic video metadata authorization system called Video Annotation and Summary Tool (VAST) was developed to facilitate the creation of video metadata. The automatic process generates a series of key frame “candidates” (primitive frames) but human beings have to manually select the key frames. The number and the image size of the primitive frames are reconfigureable. The fast-forward version of the original video can also be created from the primitive frames. Finally, we demonstrate how the new three-tier infrastructure is used to guide the development of two independent video application projects: the Open-video digital library project and distance learning using the Interactive Shared Educational Environment (ISEE) project. Both projects utilize the same set of video learning objects.

Abstract:
Abstract As titled this paper is a description of our experiences with our original “time shared” outlet continuous emissions monitoring system and the replacement of it. I will detail some of the inherent problems we faced through the years with the time shared monitors. I will describe what the catalyst was which required us to replace our monitors. And the preparation for and replacing of the monitors with the benefits of having done so.

Woods, Kirby, and Kenneth Thomas. "Fatigue Cycle Monitoring." In ASME 2011 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2011-58036.

Full text
Abstract:
The past and/or current approach to cycle count is a deviation from the current license basis (CLB)/design stress report, CENC-1150 Analytical Report, as applied in the fatigue evaluations for pressure and thermal cycles. These departures are relative to design projection versus actual operating experience in relation to “Cyclic Life” and the intent of ASME III, Section N-415 component suitability requirements for power operations of 40 years and subsequent life extension beyond to 60 years. In general, the practice of counting scram events does not accurately represent the “Cyclic Life” and is overly conservative, resulting in inaccurate projections of component reliability. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires licensees to keep an account of the number of transient occurrences to ensure that design assumptions used in the fatigue evaluation required by ASME Section III are not exceeded. In the mid 1970s, typical plant technical specifications required “the number of the transients which are comparable to or more severe than the transients evaluated in the stress report Code fatigue usage calculations will be recorded in a log book.” In the mid 1980s this transitioned into counting of transients, “this program provides controls to track the Final Safety Analysis Report, Section III-3.5, cyclic and transient occurrences to ensure that components are maintained within the design limits” (NUREG-1434, Section 5.5.5). In addition, the evaluation of Time-Limiting Age Analysis per Title 10 Code of Federal Regulation Part 54, Section 54.21(c). Cycle counting is used to summarize lengthy, irregular load-versus-time histories by providing the number of times cycles of various amplitudes occur. The definition of a cycle varies with the method of cycle counting. In fatigue analysis, a cycle is the load variation from valley-to-peak-to-valley. Cycle counts can be made for time histories of force, stress, strain, torque, acceleration, deflection or other loading parameters of interest. In general, the operational transients plants experience do not approach the magnitude or severity of the bounding events used in these analysis. Thus counting every transient as equal to a design event is unnecessarily conservative. However, no clear specific guidance for Owners on how to perform cycle counting has been promulgated. This paper provides guidance for formulating a fatigue management program that takes advantage of the original analytical design stress reports.

Bass, B. Richard, Paul T. Williams, Terry L. Dickson, and Hilda B. Klasky. "FAVOR Version 16.1: A Computer Code for Fracture Mechanics Analyses of Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessels." In ASME 2017 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2017-65262.

Abstract:
This paper describes the current status of the Fracture Analysis of Vessels, Oak Ridge (FAVOR) computer code which has been under development at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), with funding by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), for over twenty-five years. Including this most recent release, v16.1, FAVOR has been applied by analysts from the nuclear industry and regulators at the NRC to perform deterministic and probabilistic fracture mechanics analyses to review / assess / update regulations designed to insure that the structural integrity of aging, and increasingly embrittled, nuclear reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) is maintained throughout the vessel’s operational service life. Early releases of FAVOR were developed primarily to address the pressurized thermal shock (PTS) issue; therefore, they were limited to applications involving pressurized water reactors (PWRs) subjected to cool-down transients with thermal and pressure loading applied to the inner surface of the RPV wall. These early versions of FAVOR were applied in the PTS Re-evaluation Project to successfully establish a technical foundation that served to better inform the basis of the then-existent PTS regulations to the original PTS Rule (Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter I, Part 50, Section 50.61, 10CFR 50.61). A later version of FAVOR resulting from this project (version 06.1 - released in 2006) played a major role in the development of the Alternative PTS Rule (10 CFR 50.61.a). This paper describes recent ORNL developments of the FAVOR code; a brief history of verification studies of the code is also included. The 12.1 version (released in 2012) of FAVOR represented a significant generalization over previous releases insofar as it included the ability to encompass a broader range of transients (heat-up and cool-down) and vessel geometries, addressing both PWR and boiling water reactor (BWR) RPVs. The most recent public release of FAVOR, v16.1, includes improvements in the consistency and accuracy of the calculation of fracture mechanics stress-intensity factors for internal surface-breaking flaws; special attention was given to the analysis of shallow flaws. Those improvements were realized in part through implementation of the ASME Section XI, Appendix A, A-3000 curve fits into FAVOR; an overview of the implementation of those ASME curve fits is provided herein. Recent results from an extensive verification benchmarking project are presented that focus on comparisons of solutions from FAVOR versions 16.1 and 12.1 referenced to baseline solutions generated with the commercial ABAQUS code. The verifications studies presented herein indicate that solutions from FAVOR v16.1 exhibit an improvement in predictive accuracy relative to FAVOR v12.1, particularly for shallow flaws.

Abstract:
This research deals with students’ abilities to read chemistry textbook images about dispersed systems. Secondary school students were included as the research participants, and their abilities to propose the titles of the realistic, conventional, and hybrid textbook images about dispersed systems, were analyzed. Additionally, their written interpretations about images contents were also analyzed. The collected data provided information about students’ misunderstandings about dispersed systems. These misunderstandings, some of which are the original outcome of this research, provided the significant results. In addition, it was found that students had the most difficulties with reading realistic textbook images. Namely, they relied on what they literally saw on the realistic image (i.e. photography) without providing proper connection with chemical contents about dispersed systems. Keywords: visual representations, reading images, images types, general chemistry.
