Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Hybridization and genetic introgression are significant evolutionary processes playing a keyrole in the adaptation and diversification of species. In desert ants of the genus Cataglyphis, some species have evolved a remarkable reproductive strategy, termed social hybridogenesis, that relies on a perpetual hybridization between two sympatric, yet genetically distinct lineages. The non-reproductive workers systematically result from mating between partners of differentlineages; in contrast, queens and males are both produced asexually by parthenogenesis.Consequently, workers are all interlineage hybrids, whereas reproductives are all pure-lineageindividuals. Although several studies have been carried out on the reproductive strategies ofCataglyphis desert ants, the origin and the mechanisms underlying social hybridogenesis in thegenus remain unclear. In this thesis, I first examined three aspects associated to the persistence of socialhybridogenesis using the ant Cataglyphis mauritanica as a model. (i) I showed that the tightcaste – genotype association stems from a strong genetic influence on female caste fate. However, some degree of phenotypic plasticity was retained in hybrid as well as pure-lineagegenomes, although not expressed in natural conditions. (ii) The genetic survey of a largehybridogenetic population of C. mauritanica reveals that the two lineages occur with equalfrequency. Furthermore, restricted dispersal and parthenogenetic production of queens result ina mosaic of clonal patches. In contrast, males disperse over patches, ensuring successfulinterlineage mating. (iii) To determine whether mating between partners from the same geneticlineage participate to queen production, I simulated genetic data under various rates of sexualvs. asexual queen production. I found that genetic diversity within each lineage fits with theoccurrence a few sex; however, the 100% clonality hypothesis could not be discarded.I then investigated the evolutionary origin of social hybridogenesis in Cataglyphis. Bycharacterizing the reproductive system of 11 Cataglyphis species, five new instances of socialhybridogenesis were discovered. Inferences from phylogenetic analyses, including thesespecies and all Cataglyphis species for which reproductive information was available, indicatedthat this reproductive system independently evolved multiple times in the genus Cataglyphis.Overall, the results of this thesis highlight the singularities of a hybridogenesic systemassociated to queen parthenogenesis, which may have facilitated the repeated evolution ofdependent-lineages in Cataglyphis ants.
info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Abstract:

Abstract:
New second generation of immigrants is changing the face of Italian society and school in particular (there is 10% of non Italian citizens in Milan’s schools today). They bring new behaviours, attitudes, creeds and faiths, far from the majority trends. At the same time, they feel them as Italian people. So, young people born in Italy form immigrant parents are Italian-strangers, Italian and strangers at the same time. They represent a chance to rethink the way to be Italian in our country. Italian young people can learn to confront with other styles of thinking, other points of view, other meanings: this is a chance to rethink own certitudes and to stimulate doubts and questions in the mind and to build “intercultural minds” very useful in global societies. The specific educational challenge (before than social and politic) is finding ways to exploit powers inside presence of second generation youth. In this thesis we propose a causal model of intercultural competence of second generation ethnic youth who are growing up between two languages and two cultures. The “double intercultural competences” model is based on two dimensions: comprehension and contribution, two different ways to meet people of other cultures.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we study the process of the demographic change during the transition from the hunters-gatherers to the farmers on the Loess Plateau, which is the region of the origin of the cultivated millet, and in the Yangtze Plain, which is the region of the origin of the cultivated rice, in China. By collecting and analyzing the paleoanthropological data from the cemeteries of prehistorical hunters-gatherers and farmers of these two regions in China, we detect a similar signal of the ADT. This signal is also confirmed by the archaeological data, such as the density of the archaeological sites and the density of the radiocarbon dates. We represent the environmental context of the signal demographic in the following study, including the climatic change and the variation of le landscape. The improvement of the natural environment during the demographic transition is obvious, but it seems that this improvement is not a factor decisive of the ADT. Then we represent the change of subsistence strategy of the population from upper Paleolithic to Neolithic in the two regions, and its relationship of reciprocal causation with the demographic transition. The archaeological data indicate that the demographic transition and the change of the subsistence strategy were evidently followed by the modification of the habitation, and the arrangement of the villages have also varied overtime. These information probably suggest that the augmentation of the size of population is one of the main causes of the social evolution

Abstract:
For many decades researchers have been interested in the origins of the Sakha culture because of its economic and linguistic distinctive features. The Yakutia history has been examined through historical data and studies conducted by various scientific schools. With the colonization of Yakutia in the 17th century, comes a cultural evolution due in particular to the rise of the influence of Russian culture and Orthodoxy. The historical study of the colonized Yakute society within the Russian State, via the data unedited, enables us to understand the factors of its evolution over the centuries along with its societal mutations. Our study is also based on ethnoarcheological data resulting from the work the French archeological mission in Eastern Siberia and Mongolia. Through ethnoarcheology, I study the population and the history of these people. Thanks to permafrost, the excavated graves are exceptionally well preserved, which gives us the opportunity to conduct in-depth studies on funerary and cultural practices through the rich movable property found with these graves. In our research, we use this transversal approach of the Sakha culture in order to better understand its evolution, discontinuities as well as its ethnic and cultural transformations. The main objective of this research is to highlight the cultural transformation of the Sakha society from the 17th century to the 20th century while observing the previous centuries

Abstract:
This document discusses the theme of second generations of immigrant origin. First, we reflect on the “second generation” concept itself before moving on to a contextualisation of second generations in international, Spanish and Canarian migration studies. We then present a brief characterisation of one part of the second generations in the Canary Islands, and we consider the most relevant social issues involved in this reality. We end by outlining some brief conclusions

Orrnert, Anna. Review of National Social Protection Strategies. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.026.

Abstract:
This helpdesk report reviews ten national social protection strategies (published between 2011-2019) in order to map their content, scope, development processes and measures of success. Each strategy was strongly shaped by its local context (e.g. how social development was defined, development priorities and existing capacity and resources) but there were also many observed similarities (e.g. shared values, visions for social protection). The search focused on identifying strategies with a strong social assistance remit from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Sub-Sarahan African and South and South-East Asian regions1 (Latin America was deemed out of scope due the advanced nature of social protection there). Examples from Sub-Saharan Africa are most widely available. Few examples are available from the MENA region2 – it may be that such strategies do not currently exist, that potential strategy development process are in more nascent stages or that those strategies that do exist are not accessible in English. A limitation of this review is that it has not been able to review strategies in other languages. The strategies reviewed in this report are from Bangladesh (2015), Cambodia (2011), Ethiopia (2012), Jordan (2019), Kenya (2011), Lesotho (2014), Liberia (2013), Rwanda (2011), Uganda (2015) and Zambia (2014). The content of this report focuses primarily on the information from these strategies. Where appropriate, it also includes information from secondary sources about other strategies where those original strategies could not be found (e.g. Saudi Arabia’s NSDS).

Abstract:

An Emerging Strategy for the Development of Culturally Relevant Scales to Capture Aspects of Students’ Socio-Emotional Learning and Social Support for Learning. Abstract:
Existing research on students’ socio-emotional learning and social support for learning in the Global South is limited and most scales that have been developed to measure these aspects of students’ learning and development originate in the Global North. We outline our emerging strategy for capturing student socio-emotional learning and social support for learning in the context of Ethiopia, which may have relevance for other researchers seeking to explore this area of study in Ethiopia or in other related contexts. We propose that considering aspects of students’ socio-emotional learning and social support for learning—in addition to foundational skills of numeracy and literacy—can help to move towards a more expansive and holistic understanding of learning.

Abstract:
Households that hire domestic workers are a space of compulsive encounters where people of different origins and social class meet, experiencing physical proximity that makes the social distance that prevails between them even more noticeable. Drawing on current research and scholarship on paid domestic work in Latin America, this paper explores the different ways of analysing the encounters of women from highly unequal social positions in the narrowness of the private household, arguing that the combination of physical proximity and affective ties fosters the (re)production of social inequalities and asymmetries of power. But while it is within the convivial relations of these households that inequality becomes evident, it is also there where it can be negotiated, fought, or mitigated. Households that hire domestic workers are thus a privileged site for observing negotiations and disputes concerning social inequalities, and hence, a critical context to study the reciprocal constitution of conviviality and inequality.

Abstract:
This paper traces the origins of the New Brazilian Right, regarding the emergence of new leaders, new forms of expression and organization, as well as new sets of ideas, namely libertarianism and anti-globalism. Based on more than thirty in-depth interviews, conducted between 2015 and 2019 with right-wing leaders and activists; on a collection of historical data from right-wing organisations’ archives between 2015 and 2018, and on public data, I argue that this phenomenon started in the mid-2000s, after the onset of a corruption scandal related to the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and the dissemination of the pioneering social network Orkut in Brazil. This social network, founded in 2004, preceded Facebook’s popularity in Brazil and enabled the creation of alternative and disruptive spaces of debate, referred to here as “counterpublics”. By mid- to late 2010s, during the 2014 protests for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff and Jair Bolsonaro’s 2018 presidential campaign, this emerging new right would be at full throttle.
