Abstract:
Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum represents one of the most important items in the continental fisheries of Venezuela. The great fishing pressure exerted on this species has decimated the populations in the Orinoco River Delta and other regions of the country. The current condition of the population in the delta region is unknown and information about basic biological parameters is unavailable. Hence, population and reproductive parameters of this catfish were determined in this region. Results showed that the size interval was from 30 to 105 cm total length (TL), generally smaller than the size ran

We present Orinoco, an open-source Python toolkit that applies the fast-marching method to derive a river delta channel network from a water mask and ocean delineation. We are able to estimate flow direction, along-channel distance, channel width, and network-related metrics for deltaic analyses including the steady-state fluxes. To demonstrate the capabilities of the toolkit, we apply our software to the Wax Lake and Atchafalaya River Deltas using water masks derived from Open Street Map (OSM) and Google Maps. ABSTRACT Icehouse continental-shelf-margin accretion is typically driven by high-sediment-supply deltas and repeated glacio-eustatic, climate-driven sea-level changes on a ca. 100 ky time scale. The paleo–Orinoco margin is no exception to this, as the paleo–Orinoco River Delta with its high sediment load prograded across Venezuela, then into the Southern and Columbus basins of Trinidad since the late Miocene, depositing a continental-margin sedimentary prism that is > 12 km thick, 200 km wide, and 500 km along dip. This dissertation addresses the intersection of rhetoric and material exchange in the construction of political alliance and conflict between the Waraos indigenous population and the non-indigenous institutions and political actors in the Orinoco Delta, Venezuela. It deals with the discursive and material strategies used to construct political reality at the moment of the emergence of one of the so-called new South American left wing populist governments (Hugo Chavez presidency since 1998). The regulation of the Manama river, one of the major Orinoco distributary channels, has instigated changes in the hydrological and sedimentological regimes of its channel and surrounding wetlands, covering one-third of the Delta area. The dam has altered the hydrodynamics of the Manama. While the average flow of its channel was reduced from 10% to 0.5% (200 m3/s), of the annual discharge of the Orinoco River. The adjacent Macareo distributary, which is not regulated, discharges 11% (4,000 m3/s) annually. During the seasonal high-water period, the water level in the Macareo rises approximately

Phase 1 consists of increased foreland basin subsidence in the late Oligocene to middle Miocene (23 - 13 Ma) at average sedimentation rates of 0.14 mm/yr. This research investigates different scenarios of deltaic deposition, both in shelfbreak and ramp settings. I address four ancient cases with particular characteristics: 1) A shelf-margin case from the Eocene Battfjellet Formation, West Spitsbergen, Norway, in which deltas were able to migrate to the shelf-edge during rising and sea-level highstand conditions despite the low-supply character of the system (low progradation/aggradation rates compared to analogous margins), with consequent sand starvation on the slope and deeper areas of the basin.
