This study aims at analyzing the Cape Verdean feminine condition from the perspective of Orlanda Amarílis. The author reveals singularities of feminine life in Cape Verde, Africa, and in diaspora since she herself was a diasporic woman who wrote her literary work in European land concerned with the position of subalternity and resignation of her country female mates. Henceforth her characters are analyzed under the perspective of cultural identities and gender based on theoretical and critic apparatus with works by Stuart Hall, Frantz Fanon, Benjamin Abdala, Joan Scott and Thomas Bonnici among others. The entire research is focused on the analysis of four female characters of four short stories selected to compose the corpus of this dissertation: “Desencanto” (Disenchantment), “A casa dos mastros” (The house of the masts), “Thonon-les-bains” and “Luna Cohen”. From those narratives, questions are raised such as how women face adverse social and financial situations in diaspora and also violence inside the context of Cape Verde and Europe.

Full textThis dissertation is inserted in the Comparative Studies of Portuguese Language Literature area, and it has as objective to establish an analogy between the narratives of two writers who lived a diaspora. To do so, we will examine Desencanto e Cais-do- Sodré, from the title Cais-d -Sodré te Salamansa[1], and Thonon-les-Bains, from the title Ilhéu dos Pássaros[2], both by Orlanda Amarilis, and A Hora da Estrela[3], by Clarice Lispector. Starting from this literary titles, we intend to show how migrant womens reality find common issues even between such distant countries as Brazil and Cape Verde, and, still, always under gender view, the multiple identities established when someone is under a diaspora situation. From each Orlanda Amarilis tale only one thematic group (diaspora and cultural identity, diaspora memory and gender, respectively) will be highlighted, and worked comparatively to Clarisse Lispectors narrative, A Hora da Estrela, to avoid, in this manner, redundancy or themes repetition.

Full textThis research analyzes comparatively the feminine characters of Ivone Aída and Orlanda Amarílis stories. Both authors expose particularities of daily Cape- Verdean women on the island and abroad. In harmony with the intention of the hermeneutics of daily activities intents to register concrete aspects of men and women´s life, the storys dynamism illuminates the work of Orlanda Amarílis and Ivone Aída cultural cape-Verdean history and inserted the social identities for the bias of the gender relations study. The current female social situation in Cape- Verde, in the name of the resignation and obedience, we conclude that the writers proposal about waited future, must consider current experiences, moved by concrete hope that does not expire in a private achievement, but constantly stimulates the womens actions to build their future. We consider the concrete hope, in the analyzed literary texts, as an inspired feeling of transforming practices of the oppressors conditions of society against the fatalistic speeches, to expand understanding of reality and allowing to see itself in a new reality, in order to build new identities.

Full textThe central object of this research is based on Orlanda Amarílis, Ivone Aida and Fátima Bettencourts short story production from the selected corpus, we attempted to identify and understand the choice for constructing characters and narration that define in the collections Cais-do-Sodré té Salamansa, Vidas vividas and Semear em pó, respectively, social representations of gender and characteristics of the Bildung (character formation), based on Cape Verdeans hermeneutics of everyday life both in the archipelago and in the diaspora. On the first chapter we tried to establish a broad theoretical field that could support our inferences, thus applying various concepts that oriented our look at the researched object, such as: in-betweenness, post-colonialism, hermeneutics of everyday life, diaspora, the female Bildungsroman. Then we moved to the historical context at the authors bio-bibliography and in the conformation of the collections with the intention to locate the works for our readers. We began the analysis process, on the first part of the second chapter, investigating the titles of the stories and their representation in the diegesis. On the second part, we researched in more detail the processes of structuring characters, undertaken by the three writers, in order to understand the different modes of apprehension and representation of the universe of Cape Verde, especially the experiences of female submission, resistance and emancipation. The third chapter, which complements the overview of the construction of the characters, will be devoted to examine briefly the action of narrators, which together with the characters reveal the worldviews that the writers want to register in fiction in order to introduce a feminine viewpoint and sometimes feminist literary canon to Cape Verde still predominantly masculine. The fourth chapter is devoted to classifying the findings.
Santos, Sandra Isabel Dias dos. "A figura feminina em algumas narrativas de Albertino Bragança, Filinto de Barros e Orlanda Amarílis: contributo para uma abordagem comparatista." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.2/10095.
Full textThe present dissertation privileges the comparative perspective in the confrontation of certain narrative texts from Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe, identifying affinities and differences, both in form and in content, namely, in what concerns the relation of the themes of memory and identity, and also the subject of the woman or the female figure in the scope of the study of the character as a fundamental category of the narrative. In the comparative reading of the texts summoned, the starting point of this dissertation was the in-depth study of the primary sources, that is, the authors we set out to study - Albertino Bragança, from São Tomé and Príncipe, Orlanda Amarílis, from Cabo Verde, and Filinto de Barros, from Guinea Bissau, followed by the secondary and theoretical sources that the bibliography at the end of the work tries to account for. The comparative approach was centered around the female figure, relating it to the colonial past that shapes it, and, therefore, also to the issues of identity and memory, history and / or tradition, thematic topics that build a determined imaginary, as for example in the stories “Rosa do Riboque” and “Reencontro”, in Rosa do Riboque and other tales, and in the novel Aurélia de Vento, both by the pioneer writer of São Tomean fiction, Albertino Bragança, or in the stories “Casa dos Mastros” and “Maira da Luz”, included, respectively, in the anthology A Casa dos Mastros and “Desencanto” and “Cais do Sodré ”, in Cais do Sodré té Salamansa, by the author well known in the subject of women's literature, Orlanda Amarílis, and, finally, Filinto de Barros, the novel entitled Kikia Matcho, O Desalento do Combatente. In the first chapter, an attempt was made to make a theoretical framework of comparatism, as we consider that the comparative perspective in the analysis of literary texts broadens and reconfigures the reflection on the issue of national, cultural and literary identity, enabling the researcher or student of these matters to recognize that he is confronted with different literary "places", with their own characteristics, even though they share a common history reinforced by the use of the Portuguese language through which these people officially express themselves and concomitantly come together. The second chapter presents a succinct view of the period and literary tendencies of the summoned writers, as well as an analysis of the works chosen from the perspective of the themes and motives represented: daily life, exile and diaspora, disillusion, forgetfulness and loneliness, which, in turn, delimit and shape the thoughts of the character. The third chapter deals with the contextualization or framing of questions of identity, history and memory, establishing a bridge with literature, taking into account that the selected texts address these issues, which are central and decisive in the context of the above-mentioned narratives. The fourth and last chapter consists of an analysis of the selected narratives, comparing them with each other, with particular emphasis on the way in which the female figure is approached, what is the relationship it maintains with tradition and the colonial past, reflecting on the role of memory and history in the construction of identity. At the same time, an attempt is made to present a personal reading that interprets the selected narratives, highlighting their mimetic intentionality in the way they connect to reality, using description and scenes that show the experience of everyday life. Finally, some conclusions are presented, which reinforce the idea that the characters of the studied narratives are recreated in the scope of fiction, however, they reproduce reactions and social behaviors modeled by everyday life. They are characters influenced by the world in which they live, a society dominated by men. The diaspora and the situation of exile are dimensions that also interfere with their identity.
