Abstract: From the perspective of the History of the Linguistic Ideas, this thesis investigates the affiliations to Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche in Language Sciences. The hypothesis of this work is that Nietzsche's enunciation is an event in the history of the reflection on language. We understand the event, as defined by Eduardo Guimarães, i.e., not as a fact in time, but as something that produces a difference in its own order. Taken as an event, Nietzsche¿s enunciation establishes its own difference, and in it we consider two different time frames: on the one hand, the one that produces Edward Sapir¿s affiliation to Nietzsche, and that highlithts Wilhelm von Humboldt as memorable; on the other hand, the one that produces Pêcheux and Eni Orlandi¿s affiliation to Nietzsche. The possibility of thinking temporalities in its own equivocity demonstrates that there is a path in the reflection on language to be taken in the paths of a tragic materialism - the consideration that the historical determination is not a result of a machine and motorized process, but that there is something from chance that appears, and that, in that chance, an interval between the misunderstanding and the language, there is still a space for art, for creation, to resist to the sedentary senses

Full textThis work, based on the French theory of Discourse Analysis, investigates the relationships between pedagogic discourse and the written productions of graduate students, trying to identify the effects of written texts on the constitution of their identities. The corpus consists of texts written by students of a Course of Engineering of a public university of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a graduate course entitled “Laboratory of Writing”, during two years. The research is based on the works of Pêcheux (1990, 1993, 1995), Orlandi (1987, 1988, 1996, 2002a) and Foucault (2001, 2002) mainly. From this point of view, the pedagogic discourse is described as a authoritarian and homogeneous discourse which can be broken by “interpretation gestures” (ORLANDI, 1996).The analysis of the texts written by these students considered the presence of linguistic elements as adjectives, adverbs and pronouns, which, according to the linguistic theory, mark discursive positions taken by the students. The analysis gives visibility to interpretation process as a result of the pedagogic work developed in the activities of the course, which used to emphasize the production of meaning. It also gives visibility to interpretation and to identificatory processes emerging on the texts which I suppose is due to the pedagogic discourse of the “Laboratory of Writing”, which emphasized the practices of reading and writing as significant practices. From this point of view subjects and discourse are not homogeneous. I analyze the school practices of writing, the relations of power which characterize the actors of the pedagogic process, considering these relations can be transformed, being the school a place where the students can produce meanings and constitute their identities. I interpretate the textual and grammatical disorganization which can be perceived in a great number of texts written by students as “echos” of the dominant pedagogic discourse practiced in school, which mainly emphasizes the rules of grammar and the correct orthography. This research also intends, in a great extension, to theorize about the teaching of writing in school, starting from a point of view which considers the heterogeneity as being constitutive of subjects and of discourse.

Full textThis doctoral thesis presents a qualitative case study of the conceptions and experiences of democracy in schools from the perspective of teachers and students in three municipal schools in Porto Alegre, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The research is significant in terms of the implementation of formal mechanisms of democratic management at the systems level and in schools. The first four chapters develop the theoretical framework and methodology of the study and discuss not only the concepts of democracy, politics and political participation, developed from various theoretical and political approaches, but also covers the significant factors and themes which link democracy and education. The case study also makes references to the school as a focus of study. Data was collected using two types of discourse models, one being the written text of political-pedagogic projects and school regulations and the other interviews with school principals, teachers and pupils at the third level of basic education. In the construction of the theoretical and analytical models used in this research stress was placed on language studies, with particular reference to language and the analysis of discourse based on Michel Pêcheux and Eni Orlandi. Chapter four presents a brief historical contextualization of the municipal system of education to which the studied schools belong. The fifth, sixth and seventh chapters present an analysis of each of the schools surveyed, placing the school in context and describing and interpreting the interviews, with similarities and differences between the discourses being described at the end of each chapter. For school I, discourse analysis indicated that this school had a democratic project in itself and was not merely responding to external guidelines, although planning and evaluation was evocative of a traditional school with a fragmented conception of curriculum organized in a hierarchical disciplinary content. For school II, there was an emphasis on administrative management and openness to teacher participation, with little participation from other segments of the school community. School III was outstanding in that the predominant practice was formal representative democracy through the school board and elections, with little participation or direct involvement of social subjects in management processes. Considering the issues that initiated the research and the theoretical framework of the study the general findings, given in the general conclusions section, were that while in the texts of the political-pedagogic projects there was a relationship between the representation processes and direct participation the discourse of the interviewees revealed that formal representative democracy was the principle practice. Furthermore, the vast majority of pupils presented a fragile discursive memory regarding democracy, echoing the discourses linked to the popular media. There are differences between the three schools regarding the prospect for progress. In school 1 the emphasis is on deepening and improving the participatory processes by involving more pupils, while in School II the teachers believe that progress depends on matters outside the school whereas the pupils want more participation. In school III, the teachers suggest working more with issues related to citizenship and democratic experience while the pupils want not only better teaching and discipline along with the improved physical condition of the school buildings but also wish for more freedom and participation. In conclusion, the results emphasize the following: the establishment of networks in the defense of democracy and the democratization of education; the participation of social actors in the discussion, development and elaboration of educational policies; the importance of listening to pupils and encouraging training for policy and democracy; and investing in the transformation of schools and the implementation of democracy as a continuing, and unending, process.
