Beginning with Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo in 1607, followed by Christoph Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, Jacques Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers, Philip Glass’s Orphée, and finally, Ricky Ian Gordon’s Orpheus and Euridice in 2001. Through the analysis of plot changes, gender characteristics, and the symbolism of these five operas, the elements that have made Orpheus one of the most prominent figures in opera will be explored.

This thesis explores Orphic mythologemes and tropes in Marina Tsvetaeva’s works in order to identify whether they create a personalized semantic system in her oeuvre. I review such themes as the “supernatural powers” of the archetypal poet, the descent to the underworld, the return from the dead, and the dismemberment and subsequent appearance of Orpheus’s head. I study in detail the trope of the severed head in Tsvetaeva’s poetics and her understanding of poetry as Land with its physical and metaphysical realms. I discuss a question: which persons might Tsvetaeva have associated with Orpheus?

In Servius' commentary, there are two elusive statements concerning the ending of the Georgics. Both of these statements seem to imply that Vergil changed the ending of the Georgics and that the Orpheus epyllion as it now stands was a later edition to the poem. The question of whether or not Servius is correct in this assertion is a central question in Vergilian studies. La plus étonnante métamorphose connue par le mythe d'Orphée est celle qui transforme le chantre des dieux païens en préfiguration du Christ. L'étude de cette mutation dans le Protreptique de Clément d'Alexandrie permet d'aborder la manière dont se renouvelle une figure mythique au gré des polémiques. Après un préambule sur le genre protreptique, nous montrons comment Clément élabore un portrait d'Orphée en repoussoir du Christ puis comment cette condamnation fait place à une hellénisation du Christ en Orphée supérieur avant qu'Orphée lui-même ne soit «converti ».
