Three laboratory model anaerobic fixed film reactors, AFFR-A, B, and C, fed by a pretreated leachate, were monitored at 35 ± 5 °C for 10 months to estimate the effects of different concentrations and the forms of phosphate (ortho, organic, or condensed) on performances at 1.2–1.8 g COD/(d∙L) of reactor volume. Ortho phosphate (Na3PO4) supplement was added to the feed of AFFR-A, organic phosphate (sodium glycerophosphate: C3H7Na2O6P∙5H2O) to AFFR-B, and condensed phosphate (Na4P2O7) to AFFR-C at a feed COD/P value of about 6100 for 23 weeks (Phase I). Three different types of phosphate emulsifier were used, disodium ortho-phosphate and two commercially-available polyphosphates, S9 and S9H. Pasteurized, processed cheese spreads were inoculated with approximately 1 × 104 Clostridium botulinum spores/gram cheese in the cook kettle, held 3 min at 80°C, hot-filled into glass containers, and incubated at 30°C. Samples were analyzed over 30 weeks for growth of C. botulinum and toxigenesis. Toxin was first detected in 60% moisture cheese with disodium o

The activity of neuropathy target esterase is significantly inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride and paraoxon plus mipafox but not by paraoxon alone. The Vaal River Barrage reservoir is an important source of raw water for Rand Water which supplies at least 10 million people with drinking water daily. Return effluents from waste water treatment works, industries and informal urban settlements in the catchment has resulted in algal problems in the raw water and treatment process. In order to attempt to reduce the effect of eutrophication of South African inland water quality the Department of Water Affairs implemented in 1985 a 1 mg/l ortho-phosphate standard for waste water treatment works effluents. A major source of inflow into sewer networks derives from domestic (sanitary) wastewater. The wastewater is made up of contributions from the various household appliances, influencing both flow quantity and quality. The results from two appliance usage surveys are presented to give detailed insight into the sub-daily variations of flow (quantity) and the relative importance of each appliance throughout the day. The most significant wastewater generating appliance is shown to be the WC, with the least contribution coming from the wash-basin. To establish at-source quality and its variation, lim

The Dune Water Works of The Hague pumps yearly about 45 million cubic meters of water from the Andelse Maas Basin to the dunes for infiltration purposes. The water in the Andelse Haas Basin is strongly influenced by the Meuse river. Phosphate concentrations are so high that algal growth causes difficulties in filters and dunes. For phosphate reduction purposes, iron is dosed into the basin. Several limnological variables are monitored based on weekly measurements. A mathematical model has been developed for the description of the eutrophication in the basin. The model is time and space depende
