The main contribution of this thesis is the statistical analysis of orthogonal frequency di- vision multiplexing (OFDM) systems operating over wireless channels that are both fre- quency selective and Rayleigh fading. We first describe the instantaneous capacity of such systems using a central limit theorem, as well as the asymptotic capacity of a power lim- ited OFDM system as the number of subcarriers approaches infinity. We then analyse the performance of uncoded OFDM systems by first developing bounds on the block error rate. Next we show that the distribution of the number of symbol

In particular, we address the following aspects of OFDM: inter-channel interference (ICI) suppression, interference suppression for clustered OFDM, clustered OFDM based anti-jamming modulation, channel estimation for MIMO-OFDM, MIMO transmission with limited fee

With frequency selective fading, the SNRs of each sub-carrier would vary over the time and frequency. It would then cause fluctuations of the effective SNR. As the decision of MeS in LA is based on the effective SNR, the study of the statistical characterization of effective SNR over frequency selective fading channels would be very important, This problem forms the basis of investigation in this thesis. The methodology used in this thesis is generally divided into two parts. The first part is to investigate the method in obtaining the distribution of EESM over frequency selective fading chann

In single-input multiple-output (SIMO) systems based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), adaptive beamforming at the receiver side can be used to combat the effect of directional co-channel interference (CCI). Since pilot-aided beamforming suffers from consuming precious channel bandwidth, there has been much interest in blind beamforming approaches that can adapt their weights by restoring certain properties of the transmitted signals. Within this class of blind algorithms, the recursive least squares constant modulus algorithm (RLS-CMA) is of particular interest due to its

Recently, there has been an increasing demand for OFDM system operating in high mobility environment. In such situation, wireless channel is both frequency-selective and time-varying, a.k.a. doubly-selective, making it hard for the receiver to keep track of the channel state information (CSI). Moreover, the statistical information of channel, e.g., tap positions, channel length, Doppler shifts and noise power, is generally unknown to the receiver. Abstract:
DMT modulation is an OFDM-based modulation scheme used in ADSL and proposed for various other high-speed broadband access systems. Existing mathematical models for transmission lines make a number of simplistic assumptions about the distribution of noise, in particular, the assumption that impulsive noise originates at either end of the transmission line. It is therefore desirable to improve the accuracy of the transmission-line model to allow better prediction of broadband modem performance, and to further improve the bit-allocation algorithms and equaliser designs used in DMT-based modems. However, the OFDM signal waveform suffers from large envelop variations, which are usually measured by the peak-to-average power ratio (PAR). In wireless transmitters, many RF

The initial system analysis employs a space-time coded OFDM transmitter over a multipath Rayleigh channel, and a receiver which uses a selection combining diversity technique. Wireless relay can be utilized to extend signal coverage, achieve spatial diversity by user cooperation, or shield mobile terminals from adverse channel conditions over the direct link. In a two-hop multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system, the overall noise at the destination station (DS) consists of the colored noise forwarded from the relay station (RS) and the local white noise. We propose blind noise correlation estimation at the DS by utilizing statistics of the broadband relay channel over the RS-DS hop, which effectively improves signal detection at the DS.
