Abstract:
Wild upland rice species, including Oryza granulata, possess unique characteristics that distinguish them from other Oryza species. For instance, O. granulata characteristically has a GG genome and is accordingly classified as a basal lineage of the genus Oryza. Here, we deployed a versatile hybrid approach by integrating Illumina and PacBio sequencing data to generate a high-quality mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) assembly for O. granulata. The mitogenome of O. granulata was 509,311 base pairs (bp) with sixty-seven genes comprising two circular chromosomes, five ribosomal RNA (rRNA) coding

ABSTRACT Various diterpene synthases have been functionally identified in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). These are the homologs of ent-copalyl diphosphate (ent-CDP) synthase and ent-kaurene synthase (KS) that are responsible for the biosynthesis of gibberellins, diterpenoid phytohormones. We isolated a cDNA encoding full-length OsKSL12, a previously uncharacterized KS like (KSL) enzyme that consists of a β-domain and an α-domain with an active center, but lacks an N-terminal γ-domain. Functional analysis using a bacterial expression system showed that recombinant OsKSL12 converted ent-CDP int

Abstract:
Abstract Excess water can induce flooding stress resulting in yield loss of crops, even in wetland plants such as rice. However, traits from species of wild Oryza have already been used to improve tolerance to abiotic stress in cultivated rice. This study aimed to establish root responses to sudden soil flooding among 8 wild relatives of rice with different habitat preferences benchmarked against 3 genotypes of O. sativa. Plants were raised in hydroponics, mimicking drained or flooded soils, to assess the plasticity of adventitious roots. Traits included were apparent permeance (PA) to O2 of t

Abstract:
Abstract Transposable elements are mobile sequences that can move and insert themselves into chromosomes, activating under internal or external stimuli, giving the organism the ability to adapt to the environment. Annotating transposable elements in genomic data is currently considered a crucial task to understand key aspects of organisms such as phenotype variability, species evolution, and genome size, among others. Because of the way they replicate, LTR retrotransposons are the most common transposable elements in plants, accounting in some cases for up to 80% of all DNA information. To ann

Abstract:
Land use change stemming from human activities, particularly cropland expansion, heavily threatens the survival of crop wild relatives that usually occur nearby or scatter in farming systems. Understanding the impacts of land use change on wild populations is critical in forming the conservation decision-making of wild relatives. Based on the investigations on the population survival of three wild rice species (Oryza rufipogon, O. officinalis, and O. granulata) in China over the past 40 years (1978–2019), the effect of land use change during the past 20 years (2001–2019) on the natural populat
