Abstract:
Dazai Osamu (1909-1948), a modern Japanese writer, wrote “Run, Melos!” in 1940. The short story is a rework of an Ancient Greek legend of Damon and Pythias from the 4th century B.C., which was introduced to Dazai through Schiller’s version of the legend, “The Hostage”. The legend, based on a true event, represents the perfect friendship and was reworked a number of times by different antique writers. After having been forgotten for a while, it reappeared in the Middle Ages as a fictional story and has gotten many new adaptations from then on. One of them was Schiller’s ballad in 1798, which – alongside an anecdote from Dazai’s own life – represented the basis for Dazai’s story. Even though “Run, Melos!” is not an autobiographical work, Dazai managed to pass his own feelings onto the characters, add some biblical elements, and included a never-before-employed dark twist in the story, thus making his version more realistic than the preceding ones. Despite the distance in time and place between him and the legend, with “Run, Melos!”, Dazai managed to retell a Western literature story, making it a part of the Japanese literature as well, adding motifs and themes influenced by his own life, time, and place.

Abstract:
This study aims to described the symbolic violence done by Otani and its mechanism on Dazai Osamu’s short story, Viyon No Tsuma. Close reading and note taking method was conducted to collect the data. Collected data such as form of words, sentences, sentence fragments, paragraph, and paragraph fragments, were grouped in a table form and analyzed using analytic descriptive method. Data analysis results showed that (1) Otani’s habits are calm, even when he was drunk, and dress neatly. However, by the time flies, Otani changes to be rude and irresponsible man; (2) the fields existed in the short story are economic field and social field; (3) the highest capital is owned by Otani, it is a symbolic capital in the form of the nobility of Otani’s family; (4) All of symbolic violences are done by mechanism of eufemisation.

Abstract:
This paper aims to identify the technique translation of directive speech act that used in two Japanese stories of Mahou Hakushi by Iwaya Sazanami and Hashire Merosu by Dazai Osamu. Those stories are two translation works of Japanese literature in the book of Antologi Kesusastraan Anak Jepang (Nihon Jidou bungaku Senshuu). This book contains children’s literature that translated from Japanese to Indonesian by Antonius Pujo. Those two stories selected because there are many speech act in that, and the directive is considered as most interesting speech act than the other ones. This paper used descriptive qualitative method. The total number of the collected data are 50. The result show there are seven types of translation technique with total usage frequency 72 times. Those techniques are as follow : amplification 18 times, linguistic amplification 16 times, estabilsh equivalent 15 times, literal translation 11 times, reduction 5 times, modulation 5 times, transposition 2 times.

Donald Keene ha sido seguramente el estudioso de la literatura japonesa más importante de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Neoyorquino por origen, se formó en la Universidad de Columbia y en la escuela de lenguas del ejército de los EE.UU. La segunda guerra mundial, lo llevó a Hawai primero, y de allí pasó a Japón. Continuó su formación en Cambridge (UK), y tras dos años en Japón se convirtió en el mayor especialista occidental en literatura japonesa, y uno de sus mejores traductores. En su obra destacan las traducciones de Chikamatsu, Matsuo Basho, Osamu Dazai o Yukio Mishima, por citar algunos ejemplos. Al pasar gran parte de su vida profesional entre Nueva York y Japón, contribuyó en gran medida a dar a conocer la literatura japonesa en los círculos intelectuales y editoriales estadounidenses e internacionales en general. En este artículo efectuamos un repaso de su vida y su obra y argumentamos que el reconocimiento del lugar de la literatura japonesa en el canon universal se debe en gran parte a su aportación como estudioso y divulgador. De forma paralela, se convirtió en un referente para el mundo literario japonés y en uno de los puentes de la cultura nipona con el exterior.
