Smith, Andrew James Alan. "Fast waveform metrology : generation, measurement and application of sub-picosecond electrical pulses." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1996. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1349613/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes work performed at the National Physical Laboratory to improve the electrical risetime calibration of instruments such as fast sampling oscilloscopes. The majority of the work can be divided into four sections: development of an ultrafast optoelectronic pulse generator; measurement of fast electrical pulses with an electrooptic sampling system; de-embedding of transmission line and transition effects as measured at different calibration reference planes; and calibration of an oscilloscope. The pulse generator is a photoconductive switch based on low-temperature Gallium Arsenide, which has a very fast carrier recombination time. Sub-picosecond electrical pulses are produced by illuminated a planar switch with 200 fs optical pulses from a Ti: sapphire laser system. The pulses are measured using a sampling system with an external electro-optic probe in close proximity to the switch. The electro-optic sampling system, with a temporal resolution better than 500 fs, is used to measure the electrical pulses shape at various positions along the planar transmission line. The results are compared to a pulse propagation model for the line. The effects of different switch geometries are examined. Although the pulse generator produces sub-picosecond pulses near to the point of generation, the pulse is shown to broaden to 7 ps after passing along a length of transmission line and a coplanar-coaxial transition. For a sampling oscilloscope with a coaxial input connector, this effect is significant. Frequency-domain measurements with a network analyser, further electro-optic sampling measurements, and the transmission line model are combined to find the network transfer function of the transition. Using the pulse generator, the electro-optic sampling system and the transition knowledge, a 50 GHz sampling oscilloscope is calibrated. The determination of the instrument step response(nominal risetime 7 ps) is improved from an earlier value of 8.5 -3.5 / +2.9 ps to a new value of 7.4 -2.1 / +1.7 ps with the calibration techniques described.

Abstract:
An original equivalent Bit-Error-Rate (BER) extraction method (named ETO method) is developed for amplified, ultra high bit rate (40 Gb/s), high quality optical communication systems. This work was undertaken in the framework of the CARRIOCAS project which develops a 40 Gb/s experimental network. An experimental 40 Gb/s optical links caracterisation setup was developed for validation of the method. The ETO method is based on the statistical analysis of pseudorandom (PRBS) data waveforms sampled by a high frequency oscilloscope. The statistical analysis takes into account the ASE noise from the optical amplifier (Chi-square statistics) and the photoreceiver noise (Gaussian noise). Random Jitter and Inter-Symbol-Interference are also considered. Our method is faster for very low BER (less than than 10-12), than the direct measurement method of error counting. This method enables to derive the BER associated figures such as the BER contour or the bathtub curves up to 100 times faster than traditional methods. Good agreement in BER results with the direct BER counting method is verified experimentally up to 43. 2 Gb/s. The method has been successfully tested on CARRIOCAS modulators and on 2. 5 Gb/s VCSELs systems with multimodes fibers. These tests show the generality of the ETO method

Sequential equivalent-time sampling allows a system to acquire repetitious waveforms with frequencies beyond the Nyquist rate. This thesis documents the prototype of a digital ARM-based sequential sampling oscilloscope with peripheral hardware and software. Discussed are the designs and obstacles of various analog circuits and signal processing methods. By means of sequential sampling, alongside analog and digital signal processing techniques, we are able to utilize a 3MSPS ADC for a capture rate of 24MSPS. For sinusoids between 6-12MHz, waveforms acquired display at least 10dB of SNR improvement for unfiltered signals and at least 60dB of SNR improvement for aggressively filtered signals.

Abstract:
This master thesis report covers an investigation of how FPGA based hardware can be used to create customizable measurement instruments, for test of electrical equipment in JAS 39 Gripen. The investigation is done at Saab Support and Services in Arboga. Electrical equipment are gradually replacing functions, which previously have been obtained by other systems, in safety critical environments. Since the functions are safety critical, they require regular testing in order to verify proper operation. The aircraft JAS 39 Gripen, which is manufactured and developed by Saab, is an example of such system. Proper operation of the avionics in it are essential in order to maintain flying safety. There already exist systems today that can verify the functionality of electronics in JAS 39 Gripen. However, there are a number of scenarios where those test systems are somewhat inflexible. More flexible test systems are often desired. This flexibility can be obtained by using congurable hardware, suggestively with FPGAs. This approach is investigated in this master thesis.

Abstract:

Signal-integrity degradation from such factors as supply and substrate noise and cross talk between interconnects restricts the performance advances in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI). To avoid this and to keep the signal-integrity, accurate measurements of the on-chip signal must be performed to get an insight in how the physical phenomenon affects the signals.

High-speed digital signals can be taken off chip, through buffers that add delay. Propagating a signal through buffers restores the signal, which can be good if only information is wanted. But if the waveform is of importance, or if an analog signal should be measured the restoration is unwanted. Analog buffers can be used but they are limited to some hundred MHz. Even if the high-speed signal is taken off chip, the bandwidth of on-chip signals is getting very high, making the use of an external oscilloscope impossible for reliable measurement. Therefore other alternatives must be used.

In this work, an on-chip measuring circuit is designed, which makes use of the principle of a sampling oscilloscope. Only one sample is taken each period, resulting in an output frequency much lower than the input frequency. A slower signal is easier to take off-chip and it can easily be processed with an ordinary oscilloscope.

This master thesis describes a design exploration of a circuit capable of measuring high speed signals without adding significant capacitive load to the measuring node.

It is designed in a 0.13 CMOS process with a supply voltage of 1.2 Volt. The circuit is a master and slave, track-and-hold architecture incorporated with a capacitive voltage divider and a NMOS source follower as input buffer to protect the measuring node and increase the input voltage range.

This thesis presents the implementation process and the theory needed to understand the design decisions and consideration throughout the design. The results are based on transistor level simulations performed in Cadence Spectre.

The results show that it is possible to observe the analog behaviour of a high speed signal by down converting it to a lower frequency that can be brought off-chip. The trade off between capacitive load added to the measuring node and input bandwidth of the measurment circuit is also presented.

Abstract:

As the extremely rapid development of electronic industry, the demand for measurement equipment and it’s related commercial value obviously increase year by year. However, most measurement equipment in the market is made by foreign manufacturers, such as Agilent and Tektronix Technology. In order to enhance the competitiveness of domestic measurement instruments industries, we must develop our own technologies and system in this field. Above all, the two crucial specifications which impact the price and margin of digital oscilloscope are bandwidth and sampling rate. In this thesis, the advantages and disadvantages are analyzed between different probes. Also, a prototype of 10X active probe is proposed. There are two parts in the prototype of active probe, attenuation circuit and buffer amplifier. Using the architecture of super source follower and complementary source follower, the buffer amplifier is demonstrated to achieve wideband and high input voltage range. In the second work, an offset voltage calibration circuit is used to reduce the offset voltage in output at the same time. All of chip designed in this thesis are implemented in 0.18 m 1P6M CMOS process. The measured -3dB bandwidth can achieve 2.7 GHz and the input voltage range from -1 V to 6 V in the first work. The chip size is 261 um x 279 um. In the second work, the measurement results show that the active probe system bandwidth achieve 1.7 GHz, and the input voltage range from 0.5 V to 5 V. The chip size is 570 um x 370 um.

In this application a module (Arduino uno board) was used to design a semi-virtual instrument which can replace the general purpose instruments in an electronics lab. Arduino uno board is a module based on a single microcontroller. It has its associated software which is very easy to use. The programs are written in C language. In this application arduino is used to design a virtual oscilloscope. A serial communication is performed between arduino and computer. Computer is used to display continuous analog signal that has been given to the input of arduino. Since the input signal can be accessed and displayed using matlab, Fourier transform of the signal is also possible, thus it is also being used as a spectrum analyzer. A square wave has also been generated using Arduino. Hence it can also been used as a function generator.

Under the rapid development of semiconductor manufacturing technology, ac-cording to Moore's Law, the number of transistors in an integrated circuit is multiplied every 1.5 years, so that the integrated circuit in the hardware circuit continues to develop toward small size, high speed and low power. The oscilloscope is the importance of the hardware engineer. Just as the eye is important to human beings, people can observe this complex and changing world through the eyes, but the "electricity" is invisible, so the scientists invented the oscil-loscope. To solve this problem, the electrical signal is converted into a waveform to represent, the voltage and time changes can be understood, the information represented by the electrical characteristics is analyzed in advance, and the electronic technology is pushed to the endless future through the oscilloscope. However, the analog oscilloscopes that were invented in the early days could not watch the waveforms of transient transients and record retention data files, which could not meet the needs of engineers. With the advancement of technology, the birth of digital storage oscilloscopes changed the habits of engineers. Using analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) technology to improve bandwidth, sampling rate, and memory depth, special trigger circuit, accurate automatic parameter measurement, multiple mathematical operations, and practical remote monitoring, greatly enhance the use of the oscilloscope Functions, whether complex and difficult to understand signals, or unusually difficult waveform changes, can be easily identified to solve the problem. The main content of the thesis is to explore the evolution process of the oscilloscope, understand the specifications, basic operations and advanced industrial demand applications, and finally explore the future development trend.

Currently, most of engine technicians utilize the compression pressure meter, vacuum gauge and air flow gauge to diagnose the intake valve leaking problem for four-stroke engines. Using these tools are found either not convenient or less accuracy for minor leakage. The electronic oscilloscope, which is generically equipped in modern automotive workshop, was used in this research associated with the manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) installed on modern vehicles to observe the vacuum pulse variation in an intake manifold when a intake valve leaking problem occurred in an four-cylinder-four-stroke engine. Based on the findings, one could study the relation between intake valve leakage quantities and waveform’s spikes captured by an electronic oscilloscope. The study, thus, expected to find those intake valve leaking problems by studying their waveform. The results showed that the waveform’s spikes captured by an oscilloscope having linear relation with the quantity of the intake valve leakage. The average value of R2 was calculated to be 0.985. To verify the effect of measuring locations, one way ANOVA analysis was used. Results showed that the F value was less than 3.49 for each location. That is, measuring locations did not affect the leaking measurements significantly. Thus, applying an electronic oscilloscope to detect the leaking problem in intake valves of a four-cylinder-four-stroke engine is possible. In addition, by appropriately arranging electronic oscilloscope’s trigger source, the linking intake valve could be precisely identified.

Ozone oxidation reaction consists of direct ozone molecule and indirect hydroxyl radical oxidations. These two reactions may target and oxidize organic functional groups effectively. Unfortunately, it also generate disinfection by-product at the same time. The ratio of direct and indirect attack may affected by the conditions that the ozonation oxidation is carried out. Understanding the mechanisms of these two ozone oxidation pathways are valuable. This study are adapts carbonate and bicarbonate as scavenger to inhibit the formation of hydroxyl radicals which will lead to an indriect ozone attack. Ozonation of samples with scavenger will undergo only direct ozone molecular oxidation. Thus, the direct and indirect ozone oxidation can be separated and investigated individually. In this study, synthetic and natural samples containing humic acids (HA) have been investigated for the inhibited and non-inhibited ozone oxidation. The results indicate that the contribution of indirect reaction is decreasing with the increasing amounts of inhibitor dosing. Ratio of direct and indirect attack is ranging from 3 to 19 in basic HA solution. The process oxidation reduction Potential (ORP) is monitored continuously with an on-line ORP sensor connected to oscilloscope. A real-time monitoring and controlling of ozone process has been developed using the Nernst equation based on on-line ORP measurement. 13C-NMR spectrums indicate that direct reaction can decrease the amount of carbohydrate carbons (60- 90 ppm) and aromatic carbons/ double bond carbons (90- 165 ppm). Hydroxyl free radical can consume aliphatic carbons (0- 60 ppm) at the beginning of ozonation. The molecular ozone direct attack reaction mainly decomposes the side chain of macromolecule to generate aliphatic carbons (0- 60 ppm), carbohydrate carbons (60- 90 ppm) and aromatic carbons/ double bond carbons (90- 165 ppm).

A novel real-time electro-optic sampling oscilloscope system with a delay-time tunable pulsed laser source is demonstrated. A voltage-controlled digital electronic phase shifter (DEPS) integrated with the pulsed laser is employed to substitute the opto-mechanic delay line for continuous tuning the delay-time of optical pulse-train in the EOS system. The maximum scanning speed, delay-time, tuning responsivity, and resolution of the DEPS are 100 point/sec, 3.56 ns (1.78 periods), 0.508 ns/volt, and 0.2 ps, respectively. This system further benefits the advantages of frequency tracking to free-running signals with suppressed timing-jitter. The SSB phase noise at 1 kHz offset from the carrier of the VCO phase-locked to the RFS can still be as low as —90 dBc/Hz. However, the probe beam 3dB pulsewidth of GSLD was 18 ps. The SSB phase noise of the GSLD was -70 dBc/Hz at 100Hz which is similar to the VCO SSB phase noise offset from the carrier frequency, and the timing jitter of GSLD will saturate to 1.2 ps as the frequency offset from carrier over 1 kHz. By using this system, the waveforms of microwave signals generated from a frequency synthesizer, and frequency divider are real-time sampled by showing on a sample oscilloscope. The main advantage of the real-time EOS oscilloscope is the decreasing in sampling time, which eventually prevents sampling distortion caused by the fluctuation in both the power and pulsewidth of GSLD during long-term operation.
